Popular Post JerryB
Decided to run over to Buena Vista to try to get in nine before weather and/or darkness. Place was pretty much empty and I managed to play nine in less than an hour. I shot a +8 40 including a blow-up quad on hole 9 where I bounced my second shot off the carts and then took FOUR wedge shots to get thirty feet to the green. Didn't hit anything particularly notable but other than that last hole I didn't hit anything badly, either. Popular Post cjeffs12
I have a brag, this weekend I completed my year long goal of breaking 80!!! Since my swing changes started a year ago I have gone up 6 points. literally on the tee box of hole 1, my pro gave me a quick tip to feel in my swing and it really helped. This weekend my handicap went down a full stroke. On Saturday I ran into a buzz saw match where I shot my best and @crbishopshot his personal best of 75. It was a great weekend for my confidence. Saturday's Round 79 FIR 8/14 GIR 7/18 Putts 29 Shot 38 on the back!! Sunday's Round 83 FIR 8/14 GIR 6/18 Putts 34 My ball striking really improved with the tip pre round Saturday, but I also mentally changed to where I am just trying to get it on the green. Then with my chipping and pitching I was trying to hit it past the hole, and I stopped coming up short. Sunday I wasn't as diligent with these mindsets and it shows in GIR and putts, I went at pins I shouldn't have and missed the greens, and with my chips I was trying to get it close instead of just getting it on and past the hole and came up well short. These were my best two rounds by far, but I still have some things I need to improve. Popular Post MrBandit
Played a 3 day tournament over in Hot Springs Arkansas, first I will say, what a set of stunning courses in the area. First round at the Granada course, Favorite course in the rotation, elevation changes, fast bend grass greens , stunning views. If you get a chance to play there, you won't be disappointed. Second was the Cortez Course, more tree line course, not as much elevation changes, tons of dog legs very few straight holes. Third round is my second favorite course of the rotation, stunning views, seems like every hole was an elevated green, fast bend grass, lengthy one of the bunch. Popular Post Berg Ryman
So, played what might have been my last two rounds of the season on Saturday, both at the home course. First round was awful, an 88. I chipped like a baboon who was given a golf club and told to figure it out. Lost a total of 4.5 strokes to my short game against a 5 handicap and left me with doubts of even coming out for the second round where a friend from law school said he and two of his friends were coming to my course to play. I joined them as a fourth. Second round of the day, 80. Beat everyone, gained shots on short game, barely at .7. Golf is stupid and weird and that's why we love it. Couple of personal thoughts on the round. I think I went too large on putter grip with the Mid Slim SS since I was missing a lot of putts on the right side, not letting the toe rotate as needed, think I needed just a bigger pistol so that change is going to happen. Also went away from heads up putting after two three putts to start the morning round, just not working for me right now. Might focus more in the winter on it. Lastly, shot of the day, maybe the shot of my season was in the first round. 17th hole, 203 yard par 3, hit hybrid to 8 inches to a blind pin. An awesome feeling to get up there and see it that tight. Popular Post chisag
... With Over Seeding started in Phoenix I played a new course today. One of the "inferior" muni's open til Oct 10th. I normally don't keep score playing a course for the first time unless it is a quality track. I think I had 3 birdies and 2 bogies and 1 "other". ... I often wonder how players have doubles and triples without an OB off the tee or hitting in the water and I was reminded how to do it today. I was having my best driving day in quite awhile and hit a big drive through a fairway not knowing it takes a sharp turn near the hole. I was faced with a 70yd shot over a towering tree sitting on the edge of a big pond. The play was a 60yd shot back over the pond and away from the hole, leaving about a 90-100 yd wedge. Since I wasn't keeping score and knew a perfect slightly open LW would probably get me over the tree and I thought WTF, lets see what happens? I just caught the top of the tree and it dropped straight down in the rough and I would have had to stand in the water just to chip it out. I took a drop in deep rough and gouged it out on the green 40 feet from the hole with a severely breaking putt at the bottom of a tier. Got it to 4 feet and missed the putt for a triple. Ahhhhh that's how it's done. ... Knowing the hole I would not hit driver the next time and would take the lake and tree out of play ... but that said had I played away from the hole and back into the fairway I would have had a decent chance at par because I would never have flown over the tier. Worst case scenario was a bogie and I can live with that after a mistake off the tee. I go back to the Annika rule and if I am not absolutely sure I can hit the shot 80% of the time, I am not going to attempt it. cksurfdude, Shapotomous, cnosil and 10 others 13 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Haro
Yes Golf is stupid and weird! Though I finish off the season with one last game and play like crap. I wasnt really into it, however made one outstanding sand saves that almost hole out that made me come back. Didnt want to end the season with one of my worst scoring day , play yesterday playing great was -2 after 6 hole. Driver was great, wedge play was great , putting so-so but not awful, iron was good. Then I snap hook a driver on next hole . My only really terrible miss shot all day as I lost the ball. Ended up 6 over . Lost ball and not so good green reading on the tricky green later in the round. Also I need to stay positive after a lost ball and not let it ruin my next few holes. Now I thinking of how I could not snap hook that one driver shot that make me want to play one more time before i hang it up this season Golf is stupid and weird. And still addictive , cant seem to put away my clubs yet Edited October 6, 2021 by Haro Shapotomous, cksurfdude and MaxEntropy
Grand Stranded
Today was a very good day. I thought I could feel my game coming back around recently, and today confirmed it. I played in my Tuesday Members league, and with the exception of a couple of bad breaks, and some sloppy wedge play around the green, I couldn’t be happier. I shot 38-39-77 on our par 71 Fazio course. My driver was good (other than two miscues)and my irons were terrific, to the point where I never took the cover off my 3 or 5 woods. My irons were better than they’ve been all year, by the time we came to the last 4-5 holes my confidence was soaring. It felt so nice to play golf, not golf swing… just pick a club, look at the target, and let it go. That sounds so simple, but when you’re struggling, point and shoot isn’t your first thought, worrying where the ball will go is. I’m waiting on a set of PXG irons I ordered last week, but the Rogue X were so good today, I had to fight myself not to call and cancel the order. Every time I want to replace them, they come out of the corner fighting tooth and nail to stay in the bag. I’m going to sleep on this tonight and make my decision tomorrow. When I’m hitting them well, I can’t imagine getting more out of a set. They just fit me very well. On the other side of the coin, I threw away 4 or 5 stokes from within 20 yards of the green with my short game. That’s something that has to get better, and now that the oppressive summer heat has eased up, I’ll be willing to work on it at our short game area. I’m not going to stress over it tonight though… I’m going to just enjoy the things I did well. Popular Post GolfSpy BOS
Had a great time playing Saturday in a scramble with @StrokerAce and a few college buddies I hadn’t seen in a year. We had a lot of fun and ended up shooting -12 (tied for 3rd with 5 other teams). The tournament was played from the white tees, and my team was solid in hitting fairways so I got to play the Bryson role and go for some greens. Drove 2 greens, we converted the eagle on one of them. On this one I had the length for the green but I ended up just through the fringe into the rough on the right side. Not a driven green here, but I smashed a drive on the longest hole and Jason nearly got us on the green in 2 with a 3wood bomb. I hit the pitch to about a foot and we tapped in for birdie! Overall we had a great time and it was really fun to try to attack the course like I did off the tee. Makes me wonder why I don’t try it more often… but so many of those shots would be lost if they just moved a little to much to the left or right. But it was fun being Bryson for the day… even if it was from the white tees! Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Don't you just hate it when you play in a charity scramble and the team that wins bought the win. I'm all about the charity and paying a large fee for a team to play. But when they add in the other crap it takes away from the game. As an example for $250.00 you can buy a hole in one on a par five. On another hole for $250.00 you can drop next to the green on a par five. So this team with cash to burn wins at 22 under and only one was a decent golfer and two were drunk before they even teed off. My team was pretty stout and finished at 16 under with no gimics. We wound up in 8th place out of 36 teams. Ok they raised a boat load of money and I get it but you still need to play the course in my opinion. There are plenty of ways to make money. Like pay $10 to hit a circle on a green around the flag to double your money or win a sleeve of balls. Miss it and you get nothing. That's $1440 there then take out the paybacks. More people are willing to shell out $10 than $250. I want to play the course and try to play well. I want to feel like I earned a win not purchased one. Haro
Had a good day with my wedges made 6/10 saves 1. Tricky 70 yard PW 1/2 swing to a 8 feet 2 green short 25 yards I was try to be to cute with lob and run Bladed the ball Got lucky the ball ran along the wet grass slowed it down to 6 feet of the hole 3 Hit a great shot on par 3 Just off the green I was only 18 feet from pin Pin was tucked close to the edge of the green. I had this slick steep down hill chip just off the green Had to play a touch tap chip to few inches of the hole It could easily run 10 foot or more pass the hole or stopped by tall grass before the green 4 short sided myself Need 30 yard Plus clear over sand trap On awkward side hill upside lie Didn’t commit to shot my body didn’t line up properly with my shoulder LW flop attempt made only half way there First miss 5 Over the green steep uphill to where I could only see top of the pin. This time I committed to the LW flop had easy lie and flop within 10 feet 6 Front of the green. Was undecided what club to use very flat green Took out a 5 iron and tried to chip and misjudge length and spot. was 25 feet short. 2nd miss 7 In the sand Buried lie and long bunker shot Tried “chunk and run” got to much ball and not enough sand It sail 40 feet past the hole 3rd miss My technical was not to good in the sand I have two type of sand shots that I play and was in between techniques 8 Way short of the green 47 yards This is awkward yardage to a front pin The mistake was off the tee I could play a lob and roll or 1/2 swing high pitch Went with lob and run and Ball didn’t roll out and was still 10 yards short It had rained earlier and didn’t roll out as much as I though in drier conditions The grass was short enough but should have walked closer to the green to check it out Also if this was 47 yards to back pin I think Lob and run is the obvious choice as landed on the green and run out is more predictable than bouncing the ball just in front of the green where the spots are not as flat 4th miss 9 Ball in the front bunker 60 yards to pin water directly behind the green This was the most scary shot but I pulled it off a nice high LW ( had a good lie) Lots of spin ball dropped within 6 feet and stopped I am generally better at “floater” type bunker shots that drop dead Can’t seem to master the ones that roll out With “floater” I take little sand For the “chunk and run” can not figure how to adjust how much sand and how hard to hit 10 Didn’t want to count this one but just off the green 40 feet could have used putter decide on hybrid and roll it to 3 feet Edited October 6, 2021 by Haro cnosil, Shapotomous, sirchunksalot and 3 others

Just something that I had to get off my chest. I guess the charity is thinking that every team is expected put up the $250 for each hole. If my team didn't want to do that, then personally I would donate money to the charity, if it was a charity I support, and go play somewhere else. cksurfdude, MattF, sirchunksalot and 3 others 6 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

There were no extra “Goodies” that would affect the score. Because there were no Goodies the pace of play was OK. There was betting such as closest to the hole, long drive, Team gross & Net that were handled separately. Great BBQ dinner afterwards! MaxEntropy
I had not touched my clubs for 2 weeks due to vacation until last night. 2 weeks ago was a hot mess in league - everything with every club was right and not solid. I did not score super bad, but that was primarily the result of scrambling. It was not until my last full iron shot that I figured out what I was apparently doing wrong: I was getting super steep with everything. The dirt mark on that iron shot was at about a 20* angle and I was digging the toe in. Having that awareness, I made a concerted effort to flatten things out last night, but I overdid it a bit and had a lot of pulls last night. Things were certainly more solid. I ended up shooting +7 which is right at my league handicap. MattWillGolf
The best part of my game today was my driver. 5 of 7 fairways hit today. That is an all time high for me. Once again, my iron play was awful. I need to find a good instructor in my area. Putting was ok just a couple of 3 putts. The greens are still very sandy from aeration and we’re still dewy in my morning round. The green speeds were very inconsistent from hole to hole. Popular Post TR1PTIK
Much better yesterday afternoon than the previous round. I think I barely broke 100 last time I played - was struggling badly with the big stick and had a bunch of penalties. Yesterday was a much different story even though I still sliced a couple drives and had one penalty. Played at Southern Oaks in the early afternoon, and started off ok: Bogey, Par, Par, Par, Bogey, Bogey. Then, I managed my first double of the day from the fairway on #7 (the shortest Par 4). I left the approach short and right before 3-putting my way to the hole. I tripled on #8 after slicing the tee shot and taking an unplayable and still having to chip something out to the fairway, but #9 was a different story. I sliced my tee shot again and wound up on top of a hill right of the cart path with a bare lie. It's a par 5 and I had a clear shot so I decided to put my 3-iron to the test (I normally game a hybrid). Contact felt decent, but the ball came out a little low. It landed short of the green, bounced on and rolled all the way to the back. I had a slippery downhill putt of 20+ft breaking right-to-left that missed by a couple inches and knocked the remaining in for my first birdie of the day and a 43 going out. On the 10th tee, I was invited to play with the group in front due to a foursome ahead of them that refused to let anyone play through. I hit a good tee shot, but it started a bit too far right and I was blocked out by trees. Decided to play a punch shot with my 4-iron which looked really good at first, but ended up long and left of the green on a bare lie among some small trees. I was almost completely blocked out from here, but chipped an 8-iron through a small gap to leave me just off the green. Another chip (this time with my 50* GW) and two putts in for a double. #11 is a long Par 5 that's uphill nearly the entire way. I hit a great drive up the left edge of the fairway, then laid up in front of some bunkers with my 6-iron. GW onto the green and then I made my best putt of the day for birdie - 30~ feet breaking left-to-right. The next six holes went, Par, Bogey, Bogey, Par, Bogey, Bogey, before ending with another double on 18. I was sitting comfortably in the middle of the fairway with my approach, but chose the wrong club, pushed it short and right, scooped my chip shot into the bunker, hit out with the wrong club (which actually turned out ok - landed near the hole and rolled out to the fringe), then used putter to get me close for another 43. All said and done 43/43/86 felt really good. I'll also say that as much as I hate slow play (especially groups that won't let others play through), I am somewhat thankful for it yesterday. I wound up playing with some real fun guys and we exchanged numbers after the round so we can try to play again. Popular Post fixyurdivot
With our Indian Summer quickly waning and a cold front with rain and chance of snow heading our way, I played 27 holes, 2 ball yesterday at Madison Meadows. This time of year, many of the seasonal residents have left and the locals turn their attention to hunting, so courses are generally wide open. Fall colors seemingly appeared overnight and there are lots of crunchy, blowing leaves on the ground - making it tough to see balls. I started off with a yellow MTB Black and white CS. Front 9 scores were 43 (MTB)/40 (CS). Ball striking was solid but putting just felt off. I switched the CS out for a Q-Star for the next 9 and those scores were 44 (MTB)/43 (Q-star). The wind picked up quite a bit early into the second 9, blowing steady at 10+ mph. I usually don't mind wind but for some reason it seemed to be getting to me - especially on the greens with leaves blowing/moving around. For the last 9, I played a BS RX330 and a green Velocity. Madison Meadows is quite a goat track and I was really feeling the climb form #4 on. On #6 par 5 I had hit both balls within a few feet of each other, leaving 3rd shots of ~128 yards to the uphill green but both on a side/downhill lie. I shanked the first and then the other . It really pissed me off so I threw down another ball and... yup... shanked it to. Being a stubborn German and quick to anger Irish, I threw down another ball, and another, and another, finally putting attempt #7 on the green. I'd love to have had a video clip of myself and the spicy audio with it. I mean it was nuts... I simply couldn't will myself to stay down on the frigging ball . Maybe I was more tired than I thought? Clearly I need to practice this shot condition . So at #7 (the summit), I hit two good drives but both into the newly added fairway that is a completely different grass and cut. I suspect they'll start cutting it shorter next season once fully established but it's weird to hit from. I hit both approaches right at the flag but short and into the trap. I gutted the first over the back of the green, right up against a tree trunk (had to take an unplayable) and barely got the second onto the thick rough apron. This resulted in a double and my only triple. The highlight of the round was reaching #9 par 5 in two (wind helping) as I've never done that before. The 5w landed a couple feet from the pin and checked up leaving a 12 foot eagle attempt which came up just short. The final score 45 (BS)/42 (Velocity). One added bonus was that the irrigation canals had all been shut down which leaves orphaned balls exposed... 22 of them to be exact, 6 of which were like new V1's MaxEntropy, cnosil, ejgaudette and 11 others 14 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)
