Kenny B
Our muni is closed today, but we were going to play anyway with another couple and the shop guy that was coming in to get us carts. He was joining us after locking up. 30 minutes before we left the house, we got a call that everyone bailed. It's sunny and 39º with a 15 mph wind... perfect! We might head out a little later and walk 9 holes after it warms up to 43º. fixyurdivot
Having heard about Ironwood GC from a handful of folks around the area but never having played it, I decided to give it a go a couple days ago. It's a 9 hole "executive" style layout and, after 1300, $15 all you can play. It's down in the older section of Yuma and surrounded by some rather interesting mobile home parks. At the first tee, a hen chicken and her clutch were eating things in the grass and a rooster was somewhere behind the Oleanders doing what roosters do. Overall I would give it a 6/10. The layout isn't too bad in that tee shots need to be accurate and several have tree groupings that, for those who have the distance and ball height to navigate, demand well struck shots. Yardages on a few holes are perfect for 3w and 5w and a few others longer irons. The greens are small and not cut to heights I'm use to - requiring way more energy than normal. But, for the price, I'd prefer to play 27-36 holes as opposed to hitting a $12 bucket of balls... much better way of working on my game. A single ahead of me was playing two balls and he was following a threesome of ladies. I also put two balls into play and managed to get in 29 holes before light began to fade. When I went to leave, the gates were closed and it me caused a little panic ... until noticing the lock on the swing gate to the parking area was not latched.... phewww . I'll likely try it again for one of those "feel like playing but don't feel like playing days". Oh, yea, my score. I only kept it in my head and had 3 birdies, 4 bogies, and two DB's... whatever that works out to be. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I wish every day was as nice as today. I teed off at 11:00 and had my pullover off by the 2nd hole. Beautiful sunny and 67 degree day. Course was wide open when I teed off. If only the fairways were green but that's how it goes this time of year. Maxfli Tour yellow ball in play today. The round went well. Kind of felt like a summer round with not having to layer up. I had one bogey and three birdies for a 69. Shot of the day was a par five 472 yards and I was on in two. Driver and 5 wood got it done. Its a long narrow green. Missed the eagle by an inch and it trickled in slow motion toward the front of the green. I was left with a 5 footer back and made it. It was so nice out that I played another 4 holes when I finished up on 18. Golf was the fun part of the day. When I got home I went down to the lower part of my property to continue ripping up my golf green. That's back breaking hard work.. 1-1/2 inch thick green that is sand filled to 1/8" from the top. Never again. I have to take it out in 2 foot by 12 foot strips. Each strip weighs about 250 to 300 lbs. The green is 24 feet wide by 30 feet long. Its going to take a few days. I'm going to leave the base layers and cups in place, then add top soil and level it to the top of the cups then seed it. I'll use it as a 100 yard target green in the future and leave putting to an indoor mat. Shapotomous
The mid atlantic weather was very nice for late December with 55* and sunny skies. A good bit of wind off the river made club selection a challenge at times. A lot of other people had the same idea which slowed us up after 9 but we jumped around a couple holes and got in 15 before needing to head home. I had an early stinking triple on a par 3 with a chunked tee ball into a penalty and chunked chip shot and 3 bogeys with the rest pars. I didn't make a putt all day but felt like I was hitting them pretty well. I like the feel of the set up adjustments I've been practicing and had good distance and line control with the putts. A recent thread got me thinking and I tracked approach shot distances and proximity to the hole today and on the 10 holes with a regular approach distance ranging from 80 to 180 yards I averaged 115 yards and 15'. Wedge shots were getting up in the wind too much today and I wasn't happy with the inconsistent distance from the hole on those shots averaging 15' rather than the 10' I try for. 7,8 & 9 irons I averaged 15' also which is a little better than what I try for. Popular Post Kenny B
Our good friends and playing partners are moving to Colorado, and today was probably our last day to play together for quite awhile, and temps are dropping and snow is forecasted. Started out on #1 this morning at 34º with a 17 mph wind. Good thing we had our cart cover and heater, but I was still cold! By the end of the round we had sunshine, clouds, wind, and snow. This pic was shot on #1... the warmest and sunniest part of our round. I didn't even keep score. I know I had back-to-back double bogeys on #4 and 5, straight into the wind, but I parred 6-9. I had two more doubles on #10 and 13, straight into the wind again, but I had 2 sandy pars and almost a third one. By the time we finished the temperature had dropped to 27º and headed to 15º by tomorrow morning. Cold... but fun with friends we will miss. Popular Post Rickp
Monday morning Exec with mostly Bacon Boyz! 55*, heavy fog at 7:30 and struck rules, Fireball only for real birdies. From what I remember we had 5 birdies…. On my game played well, 1 bird 2 bogies for a smooth +1. Everything was working well, especially mid irons. It seems the Titleist Tour Soft like this cooler temperature. After golf we all went to breakfast and solved all the world’s problems, Washington DC needs the Bacon Boyz for expert opinions!! Popular Post juspoole
Had the chance for 9 holes of golf yesterday at Purgatory Golf Club (one of the tougher courses in central Indiana). Rained in the morning so it was very wet and still gloomy, but around 60* temps so I was in shorts with a pullover here in Indiana. Played well and still happy with my game heading into the winter. Popular Post fixyurdivot
I got an invitation to play Yuma CC with a new MGS member @kahl2069, who I met a couple of years ago playing together in a Sun Belt Tour Pro/Am at Desert Hills GC. The course ran into challenges getting grass seed before the price went bonkers and only over-seeded the tees, greens, and aprons - which were in fantastic shape. The fairways were not in the best condition, which was unfortunate, as the course is a cool layout and provides plenty of problems in the form of trees for errant shots. I gutted out a 43/39 with a rather fidgety flat stick. We're meeting up again tomorrow for a round at Desert Hills... report forthcoming. Over the decades, studies about the consumption of bacon have been anything but consistent. For years my wife wouldn't buy any and I only ate it when ordering breakfast while eating out. Then, the rescind parts of the study and say it's fine... all those years wasted . Absolutely everything tastes better with bacon. I know you really want to get out there; but speaking from experience with my TKR, when you play hurt you will introduce compensations in your swing that you will be trying to undo when you are healthy again. Don't do it. I would spend the last two weeks working on short game shots and putting, as long as it doesn't hurt to do so. Thanks Kenny.
