The Villages has more than doubled since we moved here 10 years ago, Probably 140,000.  When we moved here our house was on the edge of the Villages we are now in the middle.  I’m thinking the way they are going well be able to take our cart to Disney!

Now when I hear The Villages referred to, I immediately think of Kathleen Madigan and her comedy skit... really funny.

Today I finally got a chance to take "Johnny 5" a.k.a. My push cart out to the course for its maiden round. I've got to say, I'm really loving it. It rolls smooth, the foot brake is nice, and it was just an overall pleasant experience.

20220108_150621-01.jpeg.52ff393f381d9e47725c74ab79e8cb25.jpeg

There were some issues, more on that later.

It wasn't a bad round, but it also wasn't my best. Shot a 54 with 19 putts and two of those being 3 putts. The greens were slower than I've seen in a long time and I think that had an effect.

My driver was not on today and I finally made the move to go to 3 wood off the tee on the 7th and absolutely smoked one into the wind.

I played fairly decently except for the par five 6th where I hit one in the pond, skulled the next chip, and skulled the one coming back. I posted a smooth 12 on that hole.

Other than that disaster hole, I played fairly decent, mostly doubles and bogeys. I did manage to par the 9th after hitting a 3 wood to 94 yards and hit the approach to six feet. Shoulda had a bird, but I'll take the par.

20220108_160553-01.jpeg.c740009820540870cf7050eed67fa6f5.jpeg

As far as the cart and the problem goes, my major issue was how my bag is set up.

20220108_142551-01.jpeg.f71ad28754d16faa8bfbb95d4118e12a.jpeg

I had issues finding the clubs I was looking for because they were hanging down and covering the ones below them. On the eighth hole I let a group of riders play through and pulled every club out of the bag and fixed it. I still need to make an adjustment to where the 6 and 9 irons are not near each other.

From Friday.  Weird day.  Weirder than 43/44 an 87 would indicate.  I had a lesson the day before and try as I might I couldn't banish technical thoughts from my head which made for a very mixed striking day.  I just kind of rolled with it and had a very feast and famine type of day.  At times I was locked in, others I was floundering around in the dark.  My old downswing and older chipping technique were fighting against the stuff I learned yesterday.  I hit some truly great shots and some head scratchers that had me visiting parts of the course I'd never had to recover from before.  😑.  Including a beautiful 8 iron on a par three that I pulled that hit behind a greenside bunker, struck something solid and had me pitching back into the green from 70 yards away just off the green of another hole... and I came within 1/2" of getting up and down!

Off the Tee:  Either in the center of the fairway 250-270 out or 150 yards left, right, up, down, etc.

Woods/Hybrid:  Okayish, struck well but not at all on line.  I hit one to pin high on 17 from 235 that was 30 yards left of the green next to a drainage swale.

Irons: See the driver.  Either throwing darts or an unpredictable mix of everywhere.

Wedges:  Same as the rest.  Either the yips or putting me in position to get up and down.

Putter:  4-3 putts but also 5-1 putts -- most of them beyond 10 feet.  🤷‍♂️   I was just a little off from very long range.  On the 3 putts I was pretty far out from the pin (beyond 35 feet) and left myself 5-6 feet out.   Brushed those just to the side of the cup and tapped in for the 3rd one.

All things considered I'm pretty happy with an 87, especially with 4 doubles.  Headed to the range tomorrow to work on the drills that will start to solidify some of these swing adjustments.

It took me a good 3 months for my "new" swing to ingrain itself. You'll likely see weird stuff happen for a while.

Saturday was my last round before shoulder surgery.  I shot a 49/42:91 and had several tries at birdie.  I did par the last hole, #18 which is one of the hard3st holes on the course(#3 handicap).

Looking ahead, I am positive that my shoulder will be so much better and I can rehab with a strong Spring ahead of me.

Good luck with the surgery.  Did my shoulder while ago and it’s been great, you’ll be back better than ever.

Try this.  I found this layout for a 14 divider bag very helpful all around for (Push cart, cart, and carry)  Putter in top well, Drivers, Woods, Hybrids down the left.  Irons left to right from top with wedges on bottom.  Keeps it pretty solidly organized and easy to find stuff in almost every situation.

Good luck with your recovery.  Keep up with your Physical Therapy after it's done.  My FIL & father both had knees replaced.  One did all of his PT work and the other didn't.  I'll give you a guess which one is having problems again.

I'll give that a try! I feel like is going to be a work in progress to get happy with how the bag is set up. I've played so long with a certain organization that's optimal (to me) for riding. I like the way everything there in your bag is easier to find.

47/44 for a 91 on Saturday. Went from hitting gentle fades 4 days earlier to pull hooks in the first 7 holes. Couldn't get comfortable with my wedges all round but am chalking that up to the persistent rain we were up against.

Most importantly, one birdie and zero 3 putts!

Tuesday morning 45*, cloudy & 12-14 mph north wind.  Miserable morning, have no clue what I shot!  Lost 1 ball and was happy I finished.

So when is 93 a decent score? Today.

38* with 10+ mph winds when I teed off. It “warmed up” to 43* entually, but the wind made it feel below freezing.

I played with my Tuesday league. We usually have between 40-50 players in 2 flights, but today we had 24 knuckleheads, lol. They combined everyone into one flight and played Gross Stableford. Somehow I managed to finish 3rd despite missing my number by 5.

Tough day at the office, not a lot of fun. I’m playing a 2 man tournament that starts Thursday, I’m just hoping I don’t get sick. I feel something coming on right now. 🙄

Be careful, we’re not used to cold weather.

Rick

Good, but also really, really bad? 47/43 -- 90  It was another Jeckyll/Hyde day.  Way too many doubles today coming from a variety of sources.  I'm just misfiring right now while trying to implement the swing adjustments.    Still though, when the swing was working it was great.   The high point of the round is 5 pars on the back 9 and a tap in Birdie on the front.

Driver -- Got better, but it's still out of sorts.  I hit it OK most holes and awesome on a couple.

Woods -- Worst day with my 3W in a while.  I should have left it in the bag after the first two times I topped it 30 yards...  But hey, I needed to make sure I could do it twice more.

Hybrid -- Also not great.  I only pulled it once and the result was much like the 3W.  I haven't figured out to hit these clubs consistently from the slot yet and I refuse to continue hitting outside in with them just to get a result.  So I'm guessing more pain is in store for a bit.

Irons -- Pretty good when I kept my swing smooth.  Lots of range work is starting to make the addition of dropping the club into the slot feel more natural.  I just don't have the best feel for face control yet so my misses are blocks or pulls.  Not a lot of movement.  The ones I do hit well are getting good height and landing and sticking.  Best shot today was a 5 Iron from 193 that I stuck to 5 ft.  Lipped the birdie out....

Wedges -- I'm not playing confidently with these right now.  Got some yips and it's showing.  I warmed up and felt fine, but just did not do well pitching or chipping today.

Putter -- Ugly day.  My speed was off and every lag putt blew by the hole to 6 ft.  There were many three putts and at least three lip outs that I can think of.  I will say though that I didn't miss from inside 4 ft so that was a plus.

I'm going to take a breather for a few days.  Maybe till Monday.  I've been going really hard since my lesson last Thursday and I'm sore and think I may have overdone it.  Time to let my body and mind have a few days off to approach everything fresh again.

PS:  Also, I think the fact that this 330lb dude is now carrying instead of pushing a cart is probably a major contributor to the tiredness.  Fortunately the replacement backpack strap (the original arrived with a broken buckle) for my SL2 will arrive tomorrow.  I think that will be a lot easier on my back walking.

Course is still closed.  Nearly all the snow is gone, but the ground was frozen for so long that the water hasn't sunk in to our sandy soil.  Puddles on the greens.  The good news is that high temps will be in the 40's for the next 10 days; lows around freezing at night.  The pro thinks it might be possible to play this weekend.  My wife and I are signed up to play in a 2-person scramble on Saturday.

I'd like to play at least one more time before I leave for Palm Springs next week.  Probably still taking my MacGregor irons since I have played them most recently in December before it snowed, and they worked pretty well.

Played Desert Hills with @kahl2069and our friends from Canada yesterday.  I carded a 36/44 and my first even par nine in a couple of years 🥳. One bogey on the #1 handicap and one birdie on #2 par 5. All excited from the results, I started the back nine with a DB 🤣.  I managed to keep the lug nuts on and caught a couple of breaks on errant drives but it was one of those penthouse to the outhouse rounds.

They were having a PING Demo and I had a few minutes to test out the i59 with the Recoil ES780 shaft (one of my short list from the fitting).  They are close to Blueprint like in appearance and definitely one I think the player style aficionados should have a look at.  I hit about 20 balls and really liked it, both in sound and feel.  It was a standard lie, so I was catching mostly toe side, but ball flight was quite consistent.

I then asked about "the one with the black sock on it"?  "Sorry, that one's not available for test".  It was the i525 😲.  My quick search found very little intel on these except a golfwrx thread with an incorrect link.  Being a diligent spy, I asked if I could take a photo and got denied.  New construction and materials from the i500 and with "much better sound" - clearly the folks at PING worked to improve that commonly stated con. He said it was scheduled for retail sale early April... what a tease 🙂.

No photos of clubs under embargo.  I’d show you some of the new Ping putters but couldn’t take a picture of them, but will say they do feel great and roll the ball amazingly well.  😁
