MGoBlue100
Was able to get out in PHX today with an old friend and a new friend of his. Played a course called San Marcos in Chandler. Popular Post chisag
... Not how did I play since I am still recovering from some nasty cuts and shot a 73 but how did my partner play. I was lucky enough to be paired up with a mini tour player in Phoenix to play 3 tournaments and try the Monday qualifier for a PGA event. ... On the first tee from the tips he hits a ho-hum 335 yd drive that instantly had my attention. Iron to 6 feet and birdie. Second tee 340 leaving 185 on a par 5 that he hit to 12 feet and just missed his eagle. He had 3 eagle putts on the front. Best 9 holes I have ever seen played. Every fairway and every green shooting 6 under. The only putt he missed was a 5 footer on a par 5 for eagle. I had a 6 footer from the opposite side on the same line I made for birdie that broke about 6 inches. He played a little less break an it still stayed on the high side for a head scratcher but tap in birdie. As discussed in other threads he hit everything sky high other than his wedges and some 2 iron stingers off the tee. ... He came back to earth on the back 9 starting bogie - bogie because his 345yd drive found a bush and his approach on the next hole was a hair long leaving a silly fast downhill chip that had to go uphill a little then downhill that he rolled 10 feet past and he shrugged and said to me "when you make a mistake, just take your medicine and don't compound the problem". While his driving and ball striking was still spectacular he missed some putts and ended up with a 65, tying his low round on this course. Highlight for me was standing on #10 he says "why don't you guys hit because they are still at the bottom of the hill and I can reach them". I hit a big drive (for me) to the bottom of the hill and hit a 4 iron from 205 to the front of the green leaving an eagle putt and said to my pards loudly for Jamie to hear "He tells the old timer to hit first and now I have an eagle putt" and without skipping a beat he smiles and says "I didn't know it was so easy to get in your head" ... Humble, super nice young guy and one of the most enjoyable rounds I have ever played. Watching a couple 290yd stingers that never got higher than 15 feet was a thing of beauty. https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2020/aug/02/jamie-hall-drives-off-with-lilac-title/ "He added to his lead on 16 after smoking his drive within five yards of the front edge on the 371-yard hole. Popular Post sirchunksalot
I walked 18 holes yesterday with a friend from work. It was a beautiful 50+ degree day that had me leaving my jacket in the car and regretting wearing a heavy thermal shirt underneath my polo by the time I was walking up the hill on 12. I can't say I scored good, shot 57, 54 for a 111. I'm not going to complain and I saw some glimpses of better ball striking and my driver was good on all but three holes. I bogeyed my nemesis hole, the par 4 10th after hitting a drive just to the right of the fairway, hitting 5 hybrid just short, chipping on and two putting. I followed that up with an absolute disaster on 12, hitting a bad drive, having to punch out of some thick rough, and losing a ball after a wayward shot with the hybrid. I took a 10 on that par 4. That was +7 after two holes and I played the last 7 at +11, so that's a positive. I found a pre shot routine that really helps me with my sequencing after watching Ali Taylor and it's basically the sequencing protocol that was in the ASD portion of the original SuperSpeed training. You swing your club to the follow through and immediately swing it back to the top and just do it rhythmically 3-4 times. I'm sore today from the walking, but it's a good sore. I can see why so many people here love a push cart, I find the time it takes to get to your next shot really helps you clear your mind. As a bonus, I got to hit this beast on the range. That's a Titleist DST 1 iron that my buddy picked up from another friend at work. It wasn't easy to hit at all, but it was fun giving it a whirl. I asked her of she was recovering from back surgery and she said "No, I have terminal cancer and 6 months to live so I am just trying to keep up the quality of life for the time I have left". She was 27. I started to apologize and she held up her hand saying "I am not looking for your pity. Just enjoy every day like it is your last". ... To say this had a profound effect on me is an understatement and while not always successful, I have tried my best to do just that. A ruined cart, rangefinder and remote is just money. My injuries were far from life threatening so I just thought about all the people in the world so much worse off than me and this incident was merely a small insignificant event and I am grateful I was able to recover so quickly. Ya know, this story hit home and brought me back to when one of my best buddies lost his 30 year old son to melanoma cancer. Popular Post JFish350
Got my first round in last Sunday since November. I really hope this is how my year keeps going. This was most likely the best round I have ever play. My drives for the most part went where they were supposed to minus 2 or 3. But the biggest plus was my chipping. I have been working more on my chipping when I get to the range and the work I've put in is showing. Is was a chilly day (34) and foggy at tee time which was 7:50. We couldn't see our tee shots more than 75 yards for the 1st 7 holes. It did warm up to the mid 40's. I tripled the last 2 holes. On 17 i hit a good drive but clipped a tree branch I was trying sneak past. Ball dropped in the fairway (lucky) and left me about 180 to the middle. Ball was above my feet a little so I aimed left edge of the green (OOPS). Second shot ended up pin high down a hill/embankment with these 60' sticks in my way. I had to chip backwards wo the fairway and had about a 30 yard chip to the hole. I left myself about 8' to the hole and proceeded to run it by 4'. Missed the come back put for 7. 18 was a dogleg left which perfect for me as my miss is draw. All good until you pull the ^&$% out of it and straight into the treed section. Second shot I tried to go over the trees and just get back into the fairway. Could have gone low but it was a longer carry to get out of the trees and long grass and just wasn't comfortable with that shot. Any way, my ball clips the top of the the tallest branch (Wide Left) and fell straight down. Chip out to the fairway sitting 3, 180 out I chunk it and leave it 100 out. I pitch it past the hole about 20', put it to about foot and drop it for another triple. I really wasn't upset with the bad shots as this was my first round in a couple months. I didn't look at my score until I got a drink and some potato Ham soup. I knew I had a pretty good day but I was totally shocked to see 85. sirchunksalot, JerryB, GolfSpy_SHARK and 7 others 10 Quote Sub 70 949 D 9* HZRUDS 60G 6.5 smoke RDX shaft. Popular Post fixyurdivot
Played with @Kenny B, his wife (Martha), and her cousin Ann yesterday at Desert Hills. I carded a rather lackluster 43/44. Nothing way off, and nothing way on. Drove the ball well but my card did not have enough "F" and "G" marks in the boxes. F's not so bad but a little sparse on the G's. It was cool and windy to start and them warmed up enough to shed the pullover. They got to experience "the monster" #5 in full winter mode . The greenskeeper was even kind enough to place its pin on the front lower left area (albeit not the worst position) so they could watch great paced putts stroll past the hole and down the hill. Kenny and I have several good birdie chances but the golf God's were being stingy. We had a great time as always and started kicking around ideas for the 4th Annual PNW Spy Meet-up over pints of brew... Boise, ID was getting some love . Popular Post Syks7
Had a really good day yesterday. 41/43 for an 84. And I'm not kidding when I say I think it could very easily have been sub 80 but for a few bits of bad luck and brain farts. It wasn't a personal best but it felt like one of the best rounds I've ever played from a course management and swing perspective -- at least on the front. I felt like I was on my game, making good decisions, really taking into account where I wanted to hit from next, and visualizing my shot. For about an hour and half I felt like I was playing single digit golf. There were still a couple hiccups on the front but those were so self imposed that I just had to shake my head. That said I also hit some of the best 150+ & 200 + approach shots I've ever hit. The back was bit more of a scramble. I also had some of the worst luck ever on the back -- I hit not one, not two, but three sprinkler heads on good approach shots that may have been birdie opportunities but turned into scramble bogies after the ball bounced into space over the green 10,18 or laterally on 17. All I could do was shake my head. I also had a birdie putt drop in the side door on 13 only for the flag to catch a gust as it was dropping causing the pin to pop it back out. It felt like the golf gods were trolling me. Driver: Overall pretty good. I hit a monster (for me on 9) 285 Yard drive into the wind on 9 with what felt like the mellowest smoothest driver swing ever. Even my misses were mostly okay. I'm just not making contact with the right part of the face consistently. Work to do. Woods: 3 Wood. Excellent off the tee. Not great off the deck on 18, but I think that was more being tired than anything. Hybrid: Never had to pull it today. Irons: Really good day with Irons, particularly on the front. My 4 Iron was money today including a low draw 219 yard recovery shot from my worst drive of the day to hit the GIR & convert for par. Struggled a bit on the back with some pulls as my swing path got sloppy from tiredness. Wedges: Really good for me, but not quite getting me to the point that I'm getting up and down as much as I'd like. No flubs, no skulls, on the green in easy two putt range for every opportunity. If I can get it a bit closer and get my putting going I'll be in really good shape. Putting: Its funny how parts of your game ebb and flow. Putting has gone from my strongest part of my game to weakest as I've worked on other parts. Lag putting is still my weakness and there were two 'official' three putts on the card today + a couple more 'unofficial' three putts. One on GIR(worst feeling) and my only double of the day. Got excited trying to convert a 12 footer for par, just missed, blew the ball by the hole, and didn't convert the resulting six footer. I wasn't missing by much so it's just more about getting the practice in on alignment. Lessons and practice seem to be paying off. This is the first round since I started taking lessons that didn't feel like my outside in swing path was fighting with the inside out path I'm working on. I've been working on three specific feels related to the new swing path and have adjusted my pre-shot routine so I'm not really taking a practice swing but more focusing on those three feels before I line up, look at the target, focus on the ball, clear my head and go minimal with the swing thought 'hit the ball'. For 9 holes it was dialed, but as I got tired, my body reverted to what it knows and my swing path reverted to outside in. Part of it is that I'm now carrying every round. I'm getting used to it, but I'm definitely more tired by the end of the round. Its probably costing me some strokes, but its will be worth it for my overall health and parallel journey to get back under 300lbs. http://www.gamegolf.com/player/jgilliam77/round/3130169 Edited January 28, 2022 by Syks7 NRJyzr, CarlH, sirchunksalot and 9 others 12 Quote Driver 0811XT -- Tensei CK Orange 60 Woods 0211 3W -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Hybrids 0317X 2&4 -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Irons ZX7 4/AW -- C-Taper Lite 110 Wedges RTX Zipcore 56 Mid @55° -- TT DG Spinner Putter DF2.1 or Link.1 -- Accra Ball Zstar Diamond
Grand Stranded
We’re in the middle of the coldest stretch I remember since I moved here almost 12 years ago. Our courses have been closed most of the last two weeks, and the few days they haven’t first tees we’re pushed back to at least 1030 when they took the tarps of the greens. No golf until at least Monday, and I’m chomping at the bit. I’ve had 3 league dates and two tournaments postponed. Peaksy68
First competition round for the year. Coming back after missing a couple of weeks due to back issues and family commitments. Slow start with 2 bogeys. Warmed up a bit after that. Finished with 8 over 79 despite a brain fade 3 putt to finish. Continuing to work on my alignment, amazing how much easier it is to swing the club properly when aiming properly instead of 15 yards right. Irons were as good as I can remember. A couple of 50 yard pitches to 2 feet were a massive improvement over recent form. Putting was indifferent on greens that were slower than normal after 2 inches of rain over the last 2 days. Course held up extremely well. My mate who I play with most weeks sent me a text telling me he’s never seen me hit irons that well, so something must be working. Popular Post MrBandit
Played this weekend , trying to get back on the correct groove after a month layoff. Saturday round felt good driving, irons and wedges.. Putting was a struggle, didn't make anything, I was burning the edges but I like the stroke. The score didn't reflect how i felt about how I was playing. Sunday round was a continuation from Saturday but a better result. Driving , Irons, Wedges and Putting were much better. For whatever reason I struggle on all of the par 5, doubling 3 out of 4 and salvaging a bogey on the last. I was on the middle of the fairway, laid up on all of them and my 3rd shot were horrible, no reason . Lack of concentration i presume. I'm hoping to correct that before next weekend. Popular Post sirchunksalot
Got out today with a friend from work and played 18. I can't say it was my best scoring day, but I feel like my overall game was in a better place than it's been in a while. While a score of 57/58 115 isn't going to impress anyone, tee to green I was happy (mostly) with my game. I got penalized of the tee a couple of times, leaving myself in bad positions and had a couple of lost balls. I think the place I hurt myself was on the green. I started out with a trifecta of three putts and had 4 total on the day. I had four power lip outs and a ghastly total of 43 putts for the day. We got paired with a couple of really nice retirees, Don and Bill. The highlight of my day was Don gushing over my greenside wedge game. It was just on today, plus I was able to access Monte's original Use the Bounce series free because of downloading the No Turn Cast. It's awesome! I'm going tomorrow to take my mother-in-law to the doctor and I'm going to get my putter regripped. Popular Post chisag
... Since I don't drink, I will provide the whine for my cheese. Started out holing an 8 iron from 157 for an eagle on #1. Just missed a 15 foot eagle putt on the 515 par five 2nd to go 3 under. Another eagle putt on #5 but a hard breaking 20 footer so happy with birdie and 4 under though 5. Tees were front of the tee box and I drove it in the green side bunker on the 277yd par 4 8th that is almost all carry over water (dogleg so about 230 to carry the water) and did not get up and down. All pars to round out the front so still 4 under and that is when the defecation splattered the windmill. ... THREE groups waiting on the 10th tee box busy putting ice and beer in their carts. Seems they are a league and stopped for a "quick" meeting with some food after the front nine. To make matters worse the sun disappeared (more whine sir?) and since it was only in the mid 60's it felt pretty cold. Played the front in just under 2 hours and played the back in almost 3 hours. To make a longer story short, not only did my back stiffen considerably with the waiting and the chill (shall we open another bottle?) I played the back in +5 to finish one over. What a waste of some really good cheese. ... The good news is tomorrow the qualifier for the Phoenix Waste Management tourney takes place at my course in the morning and we have a 2:12 tee times so we get to play the same speed greens and pin placements, although we will play the course at 6403 and they will play it at 7089. Temps around 60* but sunny and the winds will be 12-15mph which ain't bad at 80* but it's gonna be chilly at only 60*. That said 60* will be much better than the 47* when the Pro's tee off at 8am. fixyurdivot, MattF, Shapotomous and 16 others 14 1 4 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Grand Stranded
Got the clubs dirty for the first time in over 2 weeks (cold weather and back issues) and while there were a few issues with the driver, I was pretty satisfied with my round. We teed off at 10am and it was 43* with a 10mph wind, and maybe warmed up to near 50* but the wind picked up, so it wasn’t the best day condition wise. I was in a very nice group though, two new members playing their first time in our league and a guy I get along well with. We played decent golf, a few really good holes, and a few blowups. We were all between 83-88 when it was done and I won low net in the A flight despite my 85 because… strokes Takeaway for the round? The PXG irons and wedges are really working out great (I’m so happy I got the same shaft in the wedges!) I can shake off the driver disappointment, I’m usually okay with that club, FWs are driving me crazy though. I’m really wondering why I bother with them at this point. After today I’m throwing a Epic Star 15* in the bag for a couple of rounds. If that doesn’t help, I think l’ll finally cut the cord. I hardly lose anything distance wise comparing it with my 3 hybrid, so at this point it’s just my ego that keeps pulling the damn head cover off the 3 wood. fixyurdivot, sirchunksalot, JerryB and 6 others 9 Quote Driver: G425 Max 10.5* Fairway: G425 Max 14*5* & 17.5* Hybrids: G425 Max 22* & 26* Irons: Apex DCB 6-AW Wedges: Jaws Raw Face 54-10 RTX Zipcore 58-6 Putter: ER7 34”
juspoole
I was able to get out and play 9 holes yesterday in the 50* day and before the snow storm coming today. Love how that works. The ground was still concrete so chipping and approach play was a little odd. Luckily I was able to get a ton of roll on my drives and actually hit a green on a par 4 from 340 (thank you to 60 yards of roll). I had 2 birdies and would have had 4 without a couple three putts. The greens still had snow on a couple of them that had not melted off yet. Put the new Ventus TR shaft in my driver and it felt a bit stiffer, but I was hitting it well and finding the center of the face. One that felt terrible and looked like a massive hook only landed about 12 yards off the fairway and I still had an open shot to the green. Sluggo42
Stag day and it was brutal. Steady 30+ mph cold wind. Easy 3-4 club wind was stoning every shot, or turning them 50 yards off line. wasn’t a good thing to be said except my lone birdie on a 170 yard par 3, that I teed off with a 3 wood. I crushed the shot and ended up pin high. I swear it went past the green, and the wind actually blew it backwards on the decent… DStar, fozcycle, sirchunksalot and 5 others 8 Quote TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes
Popular Post CarlH
Started off doubling a par 3, then went on to finish the side with a 41. During the first 9, we were seeing some light, misty rain, but more importantly the temperatures were dropping. By the turn, I had put on another layer of clothing, as the temps had dropped from the low 50s into the upper 30s. 5 doubles (yeah, I know, right!) led to a dismal 50 on the back 9. I was cold and wet and not enjoying this, at all! Winter storm hit during the night. We did get snow rather than the freezing rain they were calling for, which is good, but it's sleeting this morning. Thankfully, there's no need for me to get out of the house today. Here's a shot from my back porch of the 18th fairway.....looks like a slight frost delay to me.
