You are setting yourself up to fail breaking 80 by knowing what your score needs to be on the last holes. Even happens to the pros. How many times have you seen a tournament leader lose when ALL he has to do is "play safe" and par the last few holes? I would be willing to bet that if you write down your score on each hole and didn't look at the total until you write down your score on 18, you would have a new best score ever. I agree and I wish it were that easy, but unfortunately the math just kinda happens in my head. Asking me not to add up the numbers is sorta like saying “don’t think about pink elephants.” But there is definitely something to that because I’ve played 18 consecutive holes in the 70s multiple times, just never in a single round. JerryB
Owen and I went down to Edgebrook for the first time this year. CPO and the place was a swamp. So wet and the rough was more than ankle high. If you miss the fairway your ball is as good as gone. Foursome ahead of us were obviously pretty new and the foursome ahead of them were oblivious to everyone else so after a three holes (and an hour) we skipped ahead, playing 16. Forgot to charge my Shot Scope watch which was a bummer because I hit some rockets off the tee. Iron game is still a mess but again my putting was great. No real highlights to speak of, but after losing balls on each of the first four holes, I settled down somewhat, shooting a +32 95. Heading home we got a text to play with a couple of older guys from work, so we played nine at Buena Vista as well. Great company and we all played roughly bogey golf. I was even the long driver on a couple holes. Also got my yearly reminder that I'm a pasty white guy as I sunburned the heck out of my legs. Wear sunscreen, people! JS it is an acquired skill. We spend so much time when we start trying to play something like bogie/double bogie golf and are always looking at where we are with thoughts like I need to bogie 4 of the last 5 holes and par 1 to reach my goal. But you can teach yourself to ignore your score and just write it down without thinking about it. It isn't always that easy and when I have say 9 pars in a row it's difficult not to know my score but some days I can accomplish that feat and other days not so successful as the first birdie or bogie can make it clear I am -1 or +1 so harder to ignore. But most rounds have a mix of scores and then it is much easier to not be aware of the score unless you add/subtract numbers in your head. Keep trying and you will get there. Popular Post edingc
Ugly first 18 at home this morning. Still very wet, and because I was first out before mowers, there were several spots where the rough was 4-5" and the fairways were 2-3". Needless to say no roll and lift, clean and place. Couldn't putt at all. Four three putts in the first five holes. My speed was all off and just did not feel comfortable over the ball until much later in the round. Scraped by with a 90, that felt much worse, but had I not taken a penalty for a lost ball (plugged, presumably) on 17 I probably would have eeked out an 88 with no game today whatsoever. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
What a crazy day. Hitting my drive in the fairway is a strength for me. This morning not so much. First hole I topped a drive maybe it went 40 or 50 yards. But then I smoked a 3 wood to the fringe. Chip and a 1 putt for par. Next hole pull one to the left rough. Hybrid on to the green and two putt for par. Then par on a par 3. Next hole topped driver again. 3 wood to the fringe, chip and 1 putt for par. Smacked myself and told myself to get it together. Rehersed my driver swing and realized I had the flying elbow for some reason. Then step up on a par 5, did a full practice swing for feel. Stepped in and fired a perfect shot. So long and straight that I was left with a 160 yards to an uphill green. I hit a great 7 iron to within 3 feet. Made my first eagle of the season. Followed up with a birdie on the next hole which is another par 5. Just weird with the driver for a bit, although I though I wasn't playing well I was still scoring well. At the end of the round I tallied up two bogies, two birdies and an eagle for my first round in the 60's this season for a 69 (35 on the front, 34 on the back) I had to recount, I didn't believe it. No lost balls but found two ProV1's Then scurried home to make breakfast for Mothers day. We all ate then I mowed the front and side lawns (3 acres). Painted the fence at the driveway entrance (9 sections front and back). I'm pooped. Just put on the golf. I don't know if I'll make to the end without falling asleep. I see players cold top a driver and watch it roll out 200 yds or more. Same thing from the fairway when a topped fairway wood rolls out close to 200. Of course it isn't always to your advantage when you hit a poor shot directionally that would stop well before the water in Ohio but in the desert you hear the sound of "stop, Stop, STOP!" from the same guy/gal that was yelling "roll, Roll, ROLL! Popular Post Kenny B
It wasn't supposed to be windy today... but it was. Only about 15mph but it was out of the NW and 50º; it snowed in the Cascade Range the last few days and the wind is chilly coming off those mountains. It was sunny and we got to see the first turtles of the year sunning themselves on the rock by the #9 green... view from the #7 tee: I took my Macgregor irons out for a spin from the senior tees and birdied the first hole. I never like making birdie on #1 because it's usually downhill from there. I was right; doubled #3 and #4. Finally settled down, but shot 44 (+7) on the front. At the turn we played through 4 young walkers that were all over the place; I played much better on the back nine. I birdie #16 after sticking a 7i and shot 37 (+2) for a round of 81, which I'm happy with considering the two doubles. I had to play well today... my wife shot 85. JerryB
Owen and I were kicked out of the house today; apparently the best Mother's Day gift we could give to my wife was to get the hell out of her house! We decided to make the trek out to Silver Ridge in Oregon, IL, about 45 minutes west. We really like this course; it's well maintained, inexpensive, and usually not busy. Holy hell were we awful! The course is spread out in a rural area so if you missed too far, your ball was gone. We each lost roughly a dozen balls. Putter ran hot and cold; I had two one putts to "save" doubles and also had three four putts. Irons are still a mess and driver was erratic. Of course I had a beautiful wedge approach and a one putt on 18 for my only par, so I'll see you all again tomorrow. juspoole
Played with a couple customers last Thursday on a beautiful day in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Game was certainly not firing on all cylinders and the greens had just recently been punched. But I was happy to still break 80 with mediocre stuff. Takeaways: Wedges need some work. I know I'm not going to throw darts to every pin, but quite a few opportunities where I should have given myself a little closer opportunity. It especially was apparent with the greens being punched, so more putts than normal. Driver was pretty good - shorter course so I only hit it about 4 times. JerryB
We played the front nine at River Heights this morning. Mid 60s with winds over 25mph. Putting was iffy; speed control was my issue today. I either blasted past or was way short of the pin. Messed around with some different clubs trying to keep the ball low to varying success. Owen pointed out that my driver shaft is flexing bad on my downswing which helps explain my recent slicing issues. Might be time to graduate to a stiff shaft. I tried his X shafted driver for one hole and hit one 255 all carry, albeit wind aided. I really closed my driver face the rest of the way and hit it pretty decent. Pretty messy +19 55 today. Popular Post GolfSpy TCB
I have been working on a few things with my Club Pro over the past month... may have started seeing some results from his/my work. A nice hot and humid day in Houston yesterday, but I don't mind the warmth too much, I was off the course by noon. Because I am a golfer, and can never let an unturned stone alone... I walked on the course yesterday with my coach's swing thoughts, my T200's recently re-shafted with the Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 115 shafts (shameless plug for the upcoming MGS Product Test I was selected to participate in ), and the maiden voyage using the Shot Scope H4 device. So, nothing to distract my from my round of golf . Best start in recent memory... 11 pars in first 12 holes - only mis-step was an errant "lay up" drive on a par 5 using my 3W (left it in the rough blocked out by trees, requiring a sideways pitch-out... which rolled into the fairway bunker on the other side of the fairway) resulting in a bogey. 13 is a 160 yard par 3 into the wind... a little thin on my 6 iron left me in the front left bunker... sand thinly veiled the hardpan lying beneath, and left my bunker shot on the back fringe, laying 2 with a pretty severe sidehill/downhill par put - which I gave A LOT of respect... and left it short... 3 putt Double. Kind of limped in from there - including a big drive (for me) on the closing 18th leaving me about 225 carry over water to get home in 2. Didn't make it... but did manage a bogey. 37/41 - 78 (+6) - 13 pars, 4 bogeys, 1 double. My driving wasn't great but it didn't get me into trouble and zero slices so that was a win. My irons were the best I've played this season. I am not missing my 4 Crossover as my 4 iron has been fantastic. My chipping is what cost me the most today. Hitting them thin and I felt like I was ranging artillery, lol, long then short. Popular Post Syks7
A decent day at a tough course. 44/45 89 at Angeles National from the blues. I haven't played it in in a decade since it's usually on the very pricey end of the scale, but Mondays and Tuesdays it's 'only' $95 with cart. I wasn't planning on playing, but I had a bunch of meetings drop off the calendar today and I've heard tales of 3.5 hour rounds and the course being uncrowded. For once the rumors were true, so in spite of the price this could be in my future more often. I don't often get to play 18 holes by myself at prime time. (9:30). All that said, the course is great, tough, narrow, and the only Nicklaus design in Socal. Lot's of strategic thought required and I got caught out more than a few times. I spent a significant amount of time in the fairway bunkers today. Jack really liked putting bunkers right in the 240-270 yardage area on this course along the preferred driving line. They were absolutely magnetic to me today and responsible for all my bogeys. I didn't putt badly, but I also could not get up and down. I also found a lot of the brush on the side which is ESA and red stake land that you can't play out of -- responsible for 4/5 doubles. The high point, 4 good pars, a birdie, and a lot of up and down chances. I feel like my home course is going to feel a mile wide and super friendly after the courses I played these last two rounds. Ended up +3 so feeling pretty good. cksurfdude, Shapotomous, RollingGreens and 8 others 11 Quote Rick Left Hand, Driver; PXG 0311XF Cypher 50 gr Senior 5 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 7 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 5 hybrid; Cally Steelhead, Hazardous R2 Irons; Mizuno JPX 923HM 7-GW Recoil 460 F2 Wedges; Titleist S9 54*, Mizuno SW 56* Putter; Waaay too many to list
Popular Post tommc23
Played an up and down game today. Started the first 9 with par or bogies then had a very poor 4 or 5 holes and closed out with a decent streak of par or bogies. Figured out I was standing too far away from the ball and my ball striking got really bad in the 4 or 5 holes. Got back to my normal stance and hit the ball better, further, and I was able to control the ball both directions. 92 was a nice start to the year and haven’t played since last September Rickp, JerryB, cksurfdude and 8 others
Shapotomous
Disappointing night in league play with a 41. My wedges must have heard I signed up for Edel wedge testing because they were getting revenge on me with the 'rights' and ended up with 3 bogies as a result of those shots. I was over reading putts all night too. I had a stiff & sore swing. Probably from lots of ladder work today taking out a 2nd floor window and sheathing / drywalling in the opening. sirchunksalot, MattF, fixyurdivot and 6 others 9 Quote Modern Bag: G410 LST 10.5*, Hzrdus Smoke RDX 6.5 Flex; 915F 3w, Diamana S+ 70 S flex; Snake Eyes 18* 2h, 23* 4h & 27* 5h; JPX 900 Forged 6 - PW, PX LZ 6.0; Edison 2.0 49*, 53*, 57* KBS Tour 120 S; Heppler Fetch; Ball - MTB-X; Bag - Jones MyGolfSpy Edition! Popular Post Thin2win
I'm in Florida this week. Played a in a celebrity fund raiser over the weekend, and played really well. Ended up 2nd. Then played with my uncle yesterday.... started double, double, triple. I shrugged it off, kept a good attitude an finished the front with 5 pars and a birdie, 41. Took a quadruple on the 10th... then 4 birdies an eagle and 3 pars, 34. JerryB
We played the back nine at River Heights yesterday. Temps in the high 80s, little wind and muggy. Like the day prior it was a pretty humdrum round (+15 51), but I did get a birdie and a pretty funny one at that. Hit a solid wedge onto the green about flag high to the left. My son's ball was closer to the pin but not on my line so he didn't bother to mark it. I mis-hit my putt but it bounced off his ball and right into the cup! For once my abysmal putting paid off. He was so mad; I have a history of being more lucky than good while golfing and it annoys the hell out of him, LOL RollingGreens, Rickp, Kenny B and 6 others 5 4 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter
sp0rtsfan86
Played two rounds at the usual course... both from the blue tees. Both rounds ended up with 9 hole scores of 46. Both ended up doubling the last hole. I'm playing ok right now but struggling to hit irons on target-- getting the distance right for the most part but still tugging/pushing a bit. I've also struggled with the wedges again so need to iron that out to get my scores down this season. Popular Post fixyurdivot
I decided to sneak in another round yesterday between weather systems. I played Beaverhead GC solo as my playing partner called just as I arrived to say he had to head up I15 towards Butte because his son's car had flatlined... as in went stone dead from 80 mph . So, I played a 2 ball format and pitted a Srixon Q-Star against a TP5. I started off with a bogey and DB but had two birdies on that same hole from the other tee box... this game ceases to amaze and amuse me . Q-Star 44/41, TP5 43/44. Overall, ball striking was a little lackluster... some gems mixed in with ho-hummers. I had several drives with both balls hit well and on nearly identical ball flight. They were within a yard of one another but the Q-Star was the lead dog. On approaches, they played similar leaving me with that consistent result of wondering if there truly is a ball that best fits my game . Chris @Thin2win says there is and maybe we'll have a chance during the PNW Meet-up to find one. Anyway, the golf Gods were good to me as, while hitting my approaches into #18, I noticed 3 tents on the driving range. Are they setting up for a BBQ (which they sometimes do)? Nope... those are OEM tents... as in Callaway, PING, and Taylormade!! Seeing that only one guy was hitting, I hastily putted out and made a bee-line for them. I've been shopping for a 3w with the hopes of getting some additional gap between my G400 5w and 3w. If you care to know what I found out, head over to the "3 Wood Options" thread. cksurfdude, Shapotomous, Kenny B and 8 others 11 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)

Popular Post edingc
Silly game we play. Friend of mine is in town from Florida, so between my normal rounds, two rounds with him and one additional round (hey, I already had the day off!), I've played 90 holes in about 48 hours. Tuesday was another rough day with hooks dominating all of my swings. Shot 90 at home and 85 at another course with my friend. Both not great scores. Yesterday morning I realized my grip had gotten too strong and that was the cause of the hooks. Posted an 80 (79 ESC) at home, highlighted by reaching the 500+ yard par 5 in two going driver hybrid and two-putting for birdie. Remove one bad triple bogey and that round would have been great. In the afternoon I played a tougher track with my friend and just had one of those rounds where things went my way. My driver was not good (recurring theme so far this season), but my putting and short game were on fire. I ended up with a 77 (!) for the best round I've ever had there. This morning I had a lot of ups and downs on my way to an 86 at home. Driver is killing me right now and just leaving me with too many recovery shots. Putter was good, not as good as yesterday, but I could not buy a putt inside of five feet it seemed. Lots of lip outs from very close range. If I could get the driver sorted and my 50-100 yard game on track I'd be scoring so much better. Putting and short game have been great so far this year, much better than in past. But way too many punch outs off the tee and too many wedges ending up long off the greens.
