TheOther1
After a couple of weeks off, I got back to my league play and shot a 49 on a par 36 9 hole course. That is actually a great score for me and I won $9 in the skins game. Popular Post CarlH
Played Granada Golf Club today for the first time. Granada is a hilly course with a lot of holes on the back that can land you in trouble. Shot an 81. Doubled a par 5 from a poor decision that led to hitting my 2nd shot into the water. Drove the ball well, hitting 11 of 14 fairways, 8 GIR, but had 33 putts -- not chipping close enough and just flat out missing putts. Missed several birdies and a few par putts that were very makable but distance control on longer putts was very good. Popular Post ncwoz
39-39: 78 (+7, net -2) 6/13 FIR, 11/18 GIR, 33 putts Had another really solid round this afternoon, was maybe my best all around 18 holes. Even with an unfortunate bounce that led to a triple on the front and a silly double on the back, I was able to knock it around really well. On top of that, there was a big money game that morning with most pins in tough spots, which makes me feel even better about the round. My buddy and I had back to back par 3's where he hit it to 3 feet, then I hit it to 3 feet on the next one. Definitely the highlight of the day! Was largely able to avoid trouble off the tee again, which is helpful to play well. Go figure haha. Was a really good time with a good friend who's visiting from out of town on top of it all, so a pretty near perfect day for this lucky guy! Popular Post JerryB
Played our informal work scramble at River Heights yesterday with Owen, our buddy Kevin, and my dad. We played -2 on the front and +2 on the back. Kevin's an avid golfer but he and his wife bought a boat last summer so this was the first time he picked up a club this season. He also has two drivers and two 3 woods in his bag because he's always struggled with longer clubs. He helped with a few nice chips and putts. My dad played with us a couple times last year, which was the first time he'd swung a club in over ten years. He's pretty good but he's pretty beat up right now; he needs ankle surgery and another shoulder surgery. Unfortunately, he's the type that puts those things off as long as possible. He claimed otherwise, but I could tell he was in a lot of pain almost immediately. We actually took a few of his drives early on because they were short but dead center in the fairway every time. Owen carried us for the most part; more than half our shots were his. His short approach game wasn't good but his drives and long approaches were great. I really struggled with tempo again. When I made good connection I was rock solid but I was like Fulton Reed in the first Mighty Ducks: can only make one out of five. After a few good rounds my irons were starting to tug to the left again. The two times I tried to compensate for it I hit them dead straight. My putting was maddeningly close; too many times I had it read correctly just to end a ball rotation short or burn the edges. Almost feels better to miss badly, LOL. A lot of pin locations that were very close to the edge of the greens and it seems like no matter where it was, we were chipping from the short side. We were decent enough on the front but really faded on the back nine. On almost each of the last six holes we put ourselves in trouble and couldn't recover. But, a good time was (hopefully) had by all! Couple of birdies mixed in with a few double bogeys. I continue to kill my rounds with poor tee play, though it has gotten a little better it seems. Anxiously waiting for my lesson Wednesday as my full swing has generally been really poor. My short game and putting are just saving me right now. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Got in a pretty solid practice round today. I hit the ball well with only two bogies. The first one was on the second hole. This hole is a killer. First shot is 200 yards to center of the fairway and centered on the sharp dog leg left. Your now at the 150 yard marker but its three extra clubs uphill and guarded by two huge bunkers in the front with 2 yards between them. The green slopes from back to front. You don't want to be past the pin or be short. I wound up 6 feet past the pin. I missed the putt and now off the green. Coming back 12 feet It sat on the edge. Three putt. The other was on straight away hilly par 4. The tee shot starts from higher ground. Then it goes down hillI, then up, then down, then up to the green. I put my second shot up in the greenside trap and the sand was hard as a rock. The club bounced off the hard pan and wound up 25 feet past the pin. Missed that putt but had a tap in. I wish they would fix the traps. I wound up 2 over for the round. I'm fine with that. After the round I hit the range to sharpen the 6 iron, 5 hybrid, and 7 wood. I wanted to make sure I had them gapped correctly and knew their distances. So no sooner than 1 day after I made this post, I'm playing with my dad at a course that we really like just this past Friday. Dobson Ranch. It's a packed day so we're all waiting. The group behind us is pushing us all day but we were not gonna be rushed or bullied so we all agree to not let them get in our heads and just play at a normal pace. These guys were all loud and just excessively foul characters. A number of times we saw them throwing clubs and hitting the carts with their clubs. On a par 3, we finish and get in our carts and before we even have a chance to drive away drive away, a ball hits the fender of the cart my dad and I are in and on his side. No "FORE", no "Sorry about that", definitely no drive up apologies.. and all we heard were a bunch of chuckles from the $hitheads behind us. Not to mention it flew right over the shoulder of one of our other playing partners. In the moment I REALLY had to compose myself, take about 15 deep breaths, and drive away while formulating my next move. I knew that if I had approached them in that moment, there would be no conversation and at least 3 people were leaving in an ambulance.. the 2 guys that I put down and probably me after the other 2 in their group hit me with a club. The best thing that I could think to do was flag down the course Marshall and let him handle it. I even told him that I wanted him to handle it or else there would be blood and broken bones, police, and handcuffs. He was appreciative of that. I too am very non confrontational. But will NOT be pushed around in any shape or form under any circumstance and when the potential safety of my family is threatened.. you better believe there's a green monster deep down inside that nobody wants to see. Popular Post Ohms
2 Rounds this weekend. I played the senior tees with a couple of friends Saturday evening. It was fun adjusting to the different angles for the drives and approach shots. I spent a lot of time saying things like "I can take on that corner from here" or "that tree cuts off the line I would take from the regular tees". Had fun, shot 74 (+2) Played the regular tees on Sunday morning- the driver was giving me trouble today. Not too bad, but I'll have to give it a talking to on the range to get it back in line. Irons and putter were okay.. things are getting closer with the swing change I made earlier this year and I'm getting used to the distances. Stats: 11 pars, 1 bogey, 3 doubles (crap), 3 birdies (yay), 1 lost ball, 1 bet won, 3 bets tied (crap), 76 strokes. Popular Post DiscipleofPenick
Went out yesterday morning and played fairly well for the first 10 holes, I was +2 and had just birdied 10. Then the wheels came off. I went 39-42. But I was spraying the ball all over the place for the end of the round, and I only hit 3 greens on the day. Just one of those days I guess as 81 still isn't a bad score, just know I'm capable of more. I did have my best putting day with only 28, but that's what happens when you don't hit greens. BTW last week I was complaining about crowned cups on every hole and had a discussion with some of you on that topic. JerryB
Owen and I played Tanna Farms in Geneva yesterday with our buddy Paul. He was so close to hanging it up at the end of last season so we were very happy he came out with us. I played there once last year and was terrible and Paul had never been there before. Beautiful course. First, the good news. Paul started okay then started mis hitting everything and looked close to packing it in. Owen and I started working on him (Owen giving him pointers and me mostly affirming and talking him up) and he bounced back with a par and several great iron shots and a solid drive. Short story on Paul is that he used to be pretty good and a big hitter but someone offhandedly mentioned that his swing was ugly. That got into Paul's head and he spiraled from there. Anyway, Paul looks encouraged and we're all going to try for a range session soon. Owen played okay but really put his game on the back burner to work with Paul. I'm very proud of what he's becoming. Now, the... also good news. I broke 90 for the first time. The whole "swing easy" idea really took hold this time and other than one wayward drive I was really good off the tee. Long clubs were good with only one ugly chunk. Even used a hybrid to putt from off a long green to just a few feet from the pin. Irons were good and I even hit my PW off a tee to three feet to the pin. Coming right to left it just missed the ace. My one birdie of the day. Added four pars, two doubles and a triple. Went 45/42 for 87 (+16). Shot of the day was probably drive on 16 where I talked Paul into switching drivers and we both hit long and straight. edingc, ejgaudette, cksurfdude and 6 others 6 3 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter
Popular Post ejgaudette
Got out on Saturday with my Dad again for another fun round. The front 9 was a total mess. I hit 2 drives into a punch out spot, and missed every single green. It was not pretty. Managed only 1 up and down, and had a penalty on the lone 5 leading to another bogey. It was the first really tough nine. Ended up shooting a 43, highest of the year by far. I resolved to come back on the back 9 and keep the round together. I did just that, hag a great short sided save on 10, then made 4 more straight pars but only hitting 2 greens. Unfortunately 2 bad drives on 16 and 17 led to two bogies. Got a lucky bounce on the 18th when I was going way right and was able to save a par for a nice round 80. Was happy to have kept the back together at 37, but really need to work on the irons. I just missed was too many greens. Thinking for the next round I am going irons only. Irons off the tee and from the fairway to get a better idea of what is going on. Just think the face control is lacking going left and right, though more left currently. Need to figure it out. Hitting 4 out of 18 greens is not going to cut it and really that kind of performance can happen any round, especially if the driver is not getting me a wedge or less in lately. Time to grind on this. sirchunksalot, Kenny B, cksurfdude and 7 others 10 Quote Epic Max LS 9° Ventus Blue 6X (2021 Official Review) | Epic Speed 18° Evenflow Riptide 70g 6.0 816 H1 21° Diamana S+ Blue 70 S | SMS 4-5/SMS Pro 6-PW Steelfiber i95 S (2023 Official Review) Glide 4.0 50°.12°S/54°.14°W/58°.6°T PING Z-Z115 Wedge Flex | SOFT 11S Super Stroke Mid-Slim 2.0 Hoofer Bag | Pro V1 | Right Handed | Tracked by V3
Popular Post cjeffs12
Well I had a learning weekend for sure, frustrated but I am learning. I had two great starts to my rounds this weekend. I was 37 on the front, then really fell off the back to shoot 79. Then I had my best start ever of birdie birdie par par, then I got nervous trying to save it and finished at 40. I was really frustrated yesterday when I blew my 2 under start, mentally I go into protection mode and start trying to guide the ball instead of releasing the club. I talked to my pro afterwards frustrated, and he laughed because of two things, one some of my thought process on the bad holes. Also, because these are my comfortable scores, and he said I have to learn to get comfortable at being better. I was not comfortable I was so nervous. My driver is really killing me, the toe strikes just put me in bad spots and put a ton of pressure on my approach game, it may be on the chopping block soon. My short game has really improved, and I watched some old Brad Faxon videos and my putting was on fire this weekend. Best putting in a long time. Going to try and hit the range this evening if the heat will let up. We didnt keep score and we didn't play our best but had a fun time. I got to see some of Stu's vintage clubs make their way in and out of the bag and I did manage to show Stu what my new driver can do. The weather behaved this time and we got all 18 in. Great to get out with a fellow Spy. It was also nice to have a course tour guide to tell me where to hit, which holes to club up on and such. The course had great layout but did need a little TLC. But value for the money was killer. It helps to know people who know people. The course owners took care of us. Stu decided that walking the course with his Motocaddy would not be in the cards in his future and since I did show a lot of interest during testing he decided to give it to me with the cart bag as well. That was totally out of the blue and shows that kind of guy he is. I was pretty floored with his generosity and he didn't want anything in return. He just wanted a fellow spy to use it. So I might be late to the testing party for this item but be sure that I will either do my review in the comments or unofficial review area. I am looking foward to seeing how this baby will do in the mountains of Tennessee. That was my concern back while the official tests were going on. Maybe this will take off the last 5 pounds I'm looking to shed. Thanks again Stu On 5/26/2022 at 5:37 AM, BIG STU said: The pleasure was all mine. Guys that driver is a weapon in his hands and so is his 3 wood. The owners and staff at our course are amazing people and they would have treated you and Tim the same way had you not been with or even known me. Yeah I love the place more for the people and atmosphere but I love the course layout. It is nice when you can play a course and not only know the staff and members but residents along the course as well. On the Motocaddy I felt I had not properly gave it a good test even though I tried. It did help me tremendously on my back rehab. Giving it to Tom will put it from one extreme to the other. What I did here was just part of my make up. I have only done 3 tests simply because newer stuff does not appeal to me and I do not want to take away from someone that would actually use the equipment. Of the 3 tests I have done I kept the Precision Pro Range finder and still use it today. The Renegar wedges I stored for a while and then gave them to a guy I know. I am glad Tom will use and further test the Motocaddy. He says he needs to lose 5 lbs but I can not see where but I will defer that to him. Man, I wish I could’ve joined you two (and Tom’s BIL) out there. I’m still not able to play yet, and Tom was here what? 3 weeks ago? This sciatica is kicking my butt. Every time I think it’s getting better, it flares right back up. I’m supposed to be a tester for a putter that’s arriving Wednesday, and right now I’m wondering how I’m going to pull that off. I’m glad you two had a good time, and Stu, good on you for showing Tom some Southern hospitality! DeBartola_B
Played yesterday in the sweltering Georgia heat and a tad hungover… needless to say I was shaky at best hitting the ball but managed to have a great day off the tee and with the wedge around the greens. Hit the flag stick twice and chipped in for birdie once. Playing well with a wedge is not typical for me but it’s something I’ve been practicing hard at this year. Overall I felt like I hit the ball pretty poorly(only hit 5 greens all day) but somehow managed to card a number that lowered my handicap(I typically hover around a 9-10 and carded an 81 yesterday) It was a weird feeling almost like I am primed for a break thru soon because some of the things I’ve struggled with have been what has saved me recently. What are some key occurrences that you guys see when you are about to break thru and put together a nice scoring streak? Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts. Popular Post sirchunksalot
I went back out today and played nine holes with my friends from work today at Bear Trace. It was a beautiful, but sweltering hot day. I took a screenshot of the temperature from about ten minutes ago and you can see the heat index at almost 9 pm was 99. My partner and I ended up carding a +9 45 and the other guys had a +3 39. It was fun watching Brandon and Poe play well, even if they decimated Chris and I. As for my play, my driver continued to be a weapon, the wedges were solid, and I had a good day with the putter sinking a couple of long (20 ft+) putts. My irons continue to be a problem, I think I hit two decent shots. I was plagued by the shanks again, but it bumfuzzles me that I could make not solid contact with everything else. It'll get there. I'm planning on calling a local pro this week to schedule a lesson and hopefully they can start the unenviable task of fixing my swing. Awesome round! It's been fun following along with you and watching your progress. Congratulations on your personal best!
