Popular Post Paul Hedrick
Had a reasonable round today. On July 6th we had a terrible thunderstorm hit town. I really devastated the city, especially our golf course. The course was closed down due the cleanup and repair needed, and just opened up last Friday. No, it was not in perfect condition, but must say the grounds crew did an outstanding job getting things back in order. Anyway I will take a 4 over any day of the week! Kenny B
Moved from the Shot of the day thread... still hot from the round today!! My wife and I got paired with a twosome this morning. One guy looked familiar... I used to work with him from 1975-1980. Lots of old times to talk about!! Well, their golf games sucked. Mine wasn't the best either. I started... Birdie-Par-Double-Birdie-Double and finished the front nine with a 43 (+6). The back nine was better; shot 38 (+3) for a round of 81. One of my poorest driving days in quite awhile. Also, it was difficult to make up anything on the greens as they were much slower than normal. Maintenance put something on them that made them "sticky"... fungicide, I think. I could feel it on the ball after putting. Probably causes cancer; I wonder if I'll see an ad on TV from some law group telling me to call right now!! revkev, cksurfdude, Rickp and 8 others 9 2 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Popular Post dlow206
Not scoring well at the moment while working on some swing changes. Driver sucks at the moment. Glimpses of really good with irons at times. One thing that is messing with me right now is iron distances. I'm hitting the ball longer, and when making good strikes, i'm either landing on the back of the green or flying over the green. I'm generally a fairly high spin player, so my balls stay on the green if it lands on the green, but it sucks flying them. Popular Post Bobbers
I shot an 80 today, second best score in more than 55 years. Felt a bit like a Caddyshack moment. Driver worked as well as it has in forever (thank you for firmer fairways), fairway woods were on point, short game was good and the putter was puttin' along. Hit seven greens in regulation which is normally a month's supply. Only missed one bunker shot being on and within shouting distance of the hole. Only one double bogey for the round, no birdies, seven pars. There are days that after a round I might brood a bit. Today was a day to bask. Sorry, had to share with folks who might understand. You play with a group long enough, you just know. I love the layout of your home course, and I’m so happy to hear it’s in great shape now! I used to play in their shootout every week when I only came down for the winter 12-15 years ago ( man, the years fly by). They always had a little breakfast setup, 3 or 4 10’ hero’s and raffles afterward. I loved it! The owners there are locals, and couldn’t be better people. When I played with the Flounders, we would play there 2x a year, because we wanted to support them, and they would give us a free replay coupon each time. As the years went by, the Flounders had a lot of turnover, and the new guys complained about it so much we stopped playing there. I told the guy who runs the league, in my 15 years of playing, when he dropped them from the schedule it was the only time I was ashamed to be associated with the group. Im glad you’re feeling better also buddy. Now if this weather would just let up a bit we’ll be firing on all cylinders! Indigo has the same owners and basically the same atmosphere. I know about the Flounders traveling group. Now the Sandpipers I know quite a few of them and sometimes they come down and play with us usually a seperate event. They have a waiting list but I have some inside info and can join. In fact I was planning that when I got hurt. After my recovery I have been content to stick around Indigo because it is by the house. I went ahead a couple of weeks ago when the opportunity presented itself to purchase the full Royal Membership. I can play as much as I want to and it does not cost me zilch. I basically get out early and no one bothers me. Yep I am pretty well content there. Lots of people do not know this but that course plays a lot harder than the card indicates. One of the things I like is it sets up well for me from different tees with what equipment I choose to play that day. Had someone ask what seems to be a standard question these days " what if your wife needs you?" Well first off she knows darn well where I am at and if need be my course has a land line and everyone there knows me and someone can come get me. Other than her in my life these days nothing but her or our dog constitutes an emergency in my world. Yep I am one who does not live life with a phone on my hip at all times. IMHO it is a sad state of affairs when pastors ( mine included) have to remind people at the start of services to turn off their cell phones. Yet from where I sit I see them all the time either texting or on the internet during services. And it is just not young people either it can be folks my age or even older. IMHO if they are going to do that why bother to go to church at all. Now I commented on that one time and someone said well some have the Bible on their phone. Alf. S
July Medal on Saturday for me and started where I left off last week striking the ball well but started going off the rails at the 9th. Pushed 2nd from A one drive left me short sided and a double. Birdie 10 then a double cross on 11 for a triple. A part from that steady for the rest of the round for a 78 and a cut from 7.1 to 6.6. Playing at Largs GC on Sunday in my 3rd round of the Golf in Scotland series event. Largs was my 1st club when I was a junior so always look forward to it. The greens were the best I played in all year, slick and true. At 6150 yds off the whites not particularly long but the greens are its protection with deceptive burrows and breaks. Came in with 29 points, with my down fall being "Amen Corner" 9, 10 and 11. Off the tee I was cutting the ball and struggled to sort it that left 9 and 10 with long 3h shots in. At the 9th cut the approach and left myself short sided, too smart 3rd into greenside bunker for a blob. 10th setup looking for the cut on my second and went straight into the rough for a lost ball. 2 blobs and a 2 pointer at 11 put an end to me being in contention. Good news is my putting is improving 28 putts on both rounds. "Zen Golf"? One thing from the book I found I used was the visualisation on short breaking putts, which I've always had problems with. Had a couple really quick ones yesterday and holed them both right in the centre. Popular Post DiscipleofPenick
Played yesterday afternoon with @MaxEntropy at a course a little out of the way. The weather was great, but I had hoped that on a Sunday afternoon would be less crowded, but it was an almost 5 hour round anyway. I shot an 81 as I f'd up the last hole but played pretty solid the rest of the day. Just a 3 or 4 squirrely shots. I told myself if I could shoot my handicap or better (which would have been <78) I would register for the last section tournament this year. I kept that score out of my mind as I didn't realize that until I got home that if I would have birdied the last hole, I would have 78 on the number. I am sticking to the process and continuing to get confidence back. There's still a few more months of golf left so gonna keep it going. Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights yesterday. I was running low on balls so I picked up a sleeve of Bridgestone e12s in matte yellow. Balls were decent but wow were they hard to find! Started out strong with a couple pars. On the bridge over the river there was a large hawk hanging out. We got within five feet before it finally flew away. Very cool. Double bogey on three because of an errant approach shot that went OB. Really poor tee shot on four lead to a bogey. Couple terrible chips and another double on five. Bogey on six after an awful chunked second shot. Then the wheels fell off. By this point I was actually up two strokes on Owen but I went double, double, triple (with a four putt!) to finish with a +13 49 and he beat me by five. Popular Post ncwoz
Hit the ball really well at league last night, just didn't necessarily score well. A couple putts that I've been seeing fall lately that didn't, and one dud tee ball, but still walked away +5. It seems the duck hook that showed up at a company scramble last week was just a one time thing, so that's definitely good! Back to my typical fade with the driver, which is a million times more comfortable for my aim and setup. Popular Post RichL85
Not a horrible part of a round. Not great either. Got a bit too dark to see well by the time I got to 16, so I cut out a little early. Unfortunately that means I skipped the island green at that particular course. For just a little executive course it had its challenges. Lots of small greens and elevation changes. Weird to see a 75 yard par 3 and a 223 yard par 3 on the same course. Honestly the course wasn't in great condition, but it was near the hotel and I got most of a round in after work, so better than nothing. Looking at the positives, the swing changes have definitely been helping, but I need to commit to them more. Felt like I had a couple that I stayed back on and left short, then a few I hit well and flew the green by a large margin. I can tell I need to spend some additional practice time on the short game. Most of my little chip or pitch shots left me farther away than I wanted. Clean up that area and get more comfortable with driver, will be my next goals. Popular Post edingc
I've approached the last three rounds focused on my long-term swing changes. Thankfully they aren't too big of changes at this point, and I'm seeing good results. Some of my old habits still came back throughout my last couple rounds, especially when I try to reach back for "something extra" on the ball from time-to-time. Two hooked tee balls leading to two penalties over the last two days being the result! Still scores were good: 39 38/36 -> 74 Besides the double caused by the tee ball this morning, I cancelled out three bogies with three quality birdies and had some good looks at a few more birdies that didn't fall. Hit some really, really solid shots and it feels good to see my driver start to cooperate with me which means the changes in what I'm doing are right. Hit some monsters today despite it being very wet and shaggy in most spots. According to ShotScope my best today were 281, 287, 293, 299 (uphill beauty, maybe the best drive of my life), 309 and 318 (downhill). sirchunksalot, russtopherb, CarlH and 15 others 18 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Popular Post TR1PTIK
Really mixed bag yesterday out at Southern Oaks. Started out with an easy par thinking I was pretty much the only person on the course, but then on 2 I find myself waiting on a foursome. "Not a big deal. They'll finish up and let me play through on the next hole or maybe #4." It was a nice thought... Without getting into all the details of what took place, these guys were part of a larger group of 11 and must have been playing for money - at least I hope they were for as long as they were taking. I wouldn't work my way through all of them until the 14th hole and would go from hot to cold and back numerous times on the front to shoot 49 gross/48 net. "It's going to take one heck of a back nine to shoot in the 80's" I thought. Not impossible, but not likely based on the front. Well as it turns out, I would go bogey, EAGLE!!!, par, birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey, bogey, triple bogey for a 3-over 39! What a freaking ride! LOL Highlights of the round definitely came on the back nine par 5's: #11 is 553 dead straight and mildly uphill the whole way. I was 55 yards right of the green in two with a baked out lie and LW in my hand. The ball landed on the downslope just a few yards on and rolled, and rolled, and rolled... I honestly started thinking that it needed to stop before it ran all the way through the green, but then it turned towards the hole before catching the right edge! The other par 5 is #15 which sits at 523 yards on the scorecard and bends subtly to the left. Hit a great drive right down the middle but was 260+ out. I hit probably the best 3-wood I've ever hit from the turf; a towering fade that found the right side giving me a glimpse of hope for another eagle. I studied the break for a bit then stroked the 20' putt. I watched it track toward the hole before diving just a touch too far left. It lipped out and gave me a tap-in bird. You'll need to post a screenshot on @jlukes hole of the round thread! Thanks! I tried my best not to get too frustrated with myself for the penalty and kept my cool better than I have recently. Resigning myself to committing to changes and scores being what they may be during that period is helpful. Otherwise I tend to get too wrapped up into the score and not the progress. (That being said, I probably hit another seven or eight shots this morning that were a bad mix of old/new swing, I just lucked out and missed in places that didn't hurt me too bad.) You'll like the H4, I think. I keep a rubber band looped around the clip and the device so it doesn't inadvertently fall out. You can still tag the club okay and read distances even with the band running across the middle of the screen. I like mine for the most part! Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I played the back nine at River Heights today. Owen had a couple sleeves of Vice Pros in the ice blue color. He wasn't a fan, so he gave me a sleeve to try today. After playing the yellow balls yesterday this was...not a step in the right direction, lol. Overcast morning meant that this ball was lost almost every time I hit it. Color notwithstanding, I actually really liked this ball. First hole was a disaster for the both of us. We each put the tee shot in the water and wound up with triples. On eleven we both hooked our tee shots but mine hit a tree and bounced to just in front of the green. Double for him, bogey for me. Hole twelve is a short par four. He had an eagle chip that just missed for a tap in birdie while I had a birdie look and carded bogey . On thirteen I clobbered my drive 265 and hit a short iron pure, but since I was aiming for my recent pull I wound up on the green but a ways away. I put it close for an easy par. On fourteen I had a poor drive but a good recovery and had a decent look at a par putt. This is the only hole at River Heights that I haven't gotten par yet, and I choked it; bogey. Then I fell apart...triple double double with three putts on each. Hit a drive 275 that rode the treeline and ran forever. On all three I had to punch out at some point with my 7 iron and I came to the realization that 90% of my 7 iron use is for punch outs and bump and runs and other non-full-swing shots. Nothing to add to that, it just seems odd. On eighteen after a decent drive I decided to actually swing my 7, which I pulled left into the trap. Chipped it into the green and had a decent par look but the putt broke at the end for a tap in bogey. Owen wound up +6 and I had a +14 50. Seems like day to day I'm good at one aspect and terrible at another and I never know which will show up! cnosil, Rickp, edingc and 10 others 12 1 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter

Never are all 4 facets … mental, tee, iron and short game … of golf are on the same page. Rarely all 3 and we’re lucky to have 2 on the same page. And yet we keep striving for it and to get better. True story, a good buddy of mine brought his dad for golf with us one morning. His name is Woodrow and likes to put blue golf balls into play … he’s also a pastor at a local church. On a Par 3, he hit a high tee shot that we lost sight of on the horizon with the sky, was likely short of the green and his dad was having a bad round overall. Without even thinking and looking to lighten up the mood and joke a bit, I said “Ahh man, maybe morning golf and blue balls just aren’t your thing, Woody.” My buddy Brad and his dad stopped mid step after my comment, looked at me, looked at each other and both burst into laughter. I realized what I said afterwards and I honestly never laughed so hard in my life.
