Another go hum round, but, had 4 birdies so the score ended up good. But the highlight of the day was this little old guy named Mike, who btw, had his name embroidered on his bag, who joined us for the round. He has some kind of of tournament there on Friday, so he was out to figure the track out. We helped all we could with some local knowledge.

but the cool part was this guy, at 77, was deadly! Not long or anything, but dead straight down the middle all day. Plus he had a nice little short game. Lots of fun…

Played great yesterday afternoon, for 2 holes.  Was lightly raining when arriving at the course, 1st hole was downwind and everything went straight with a slight fade.  1-putt bogie from a missed chip.  2nd hole into the wind played well again everything working right but rain had picked up as did the wind approaching the green.  Overshot the approach and chipped on with another 1-putt through standing water for bogie, +2 for two holes played.  Cups were topped ball washers at this point and the rain was heavy so went to shelter under the clubhouse awning to wait for it to go off with another course regular whose umbrella was broken by the wind while he putted out the 1st hole.  Rain was torrential at times and wind was gusting, called it a day after there was no letup in the downpour for a half hour.  Packed up with plans to try it again this afternoon, same golf time, same golf place, same weather forecast.  ☔⛳ it's what we do.

Played 9 even par and best 9 holes for quite some time, handicap is 23.9 hoping I'm on the way back with a birdie on the 258metre par 4. The 5th hole 150ish metres is my nemesis hole, it's a elevated green of 5-6 metres and a real Bugger to stay on top as it's alittle narrow and alittle oval . I hate it lol...

Shotgun start today and I start on #10.  Fire a 38 on the front 9.  Striking the ball pretty well.  Bogeyed 3 of the 4 first holes on the back 9 (the par was on the hardest hole!), then settled down and parred the next 3, miss a short putt for par on #8 for another bogey.  Hit a huge drive (for me) on the closing hole, center of the fairway, leaving 155 yards to the pin, fan my iron and it leaks wide into the green side bunker, leaving me a fair amount to carry with not a lot of green to work with.  Ball doesn't quite get to the green and I putt from the fringe, hits something and veers high.  I have a makable putt downhill to close out, but miss the putt and end the round with my only double bogey for the day.  Card a disappointing 80, given how well I felt I was striking the ball.  Team won some money, so it's all good.

Used to be consecutive days on the course were sunny and warm, now it is rainy and cold.  Today started with getting the push cart out and umbrella up and then getting the golf bag out and loaded, etc.  The course was deserted and I had the only vehicle in the parking lot.  Perfect time for solitary golf.  The first hole was downwind but a mix of rain with sleet or hail helped to drop the ball into a water filled cup for a double.

955051779_10_19.20222ndgreentowardsclubhouse(2).JPG.ad5f9eedb1f2015248ec847890362217.JPG

2nd green was a little wet but the putt still dropped into the cup in one.

The rain was relentless again down the 1st fairway with sleet or small hail mixing in at the 1st green turning back to rain on the 2nd tee.  Once again great shots in the rain playing with insulated gloves with grip surfaces on the palm and fingers.

1485181722_10_19.20223rdgreenteeshot(2).JPG.edc390a45f720d2d44567d0a19d21d66.JPG

The 3rd tee shot was a low 8i across the creek that bounded up onto the green for a 6ft lag putt and tap-in.  The rain actually went off heading over to the 4th tee and this started the string of singles through the 8th hole.

The colors are finally beginning to peak locally as the proximity to Lake Erie actually delays things with the heat it holds in the autumn and the cold it holds in the spring.  Finished the 9th hole in renewed driving rain and gusting winds with a double for a 46 +10 or a net 33 at -3 and 1.4 Putts per Hole.

... Pretty much starting the "I Hate You" season in Phoenix. I was a live in Chicago and AZ hater for many years so I get it. I would like to complain about the over seeded fairways that are shaggy and slow, but the greens are rolling nice and the temps were 86* with 25% humidity. That humidity will start dropping and get to the single digits by next month. Back to the round, I moved up a tee box because of the shaggy fairways so my approach shots were pretty normal distances and I played all the par 3's from the normal tees since fairway roll isn't involved.

... Swinging well and pretty happy with myself today carding 3 birdies and 15 pars. No bogies, which is very rare for me. Lipped out 2 birdie putts and didn't find a fairway or green side bunker. This is my home course so I know it well, although Gary Pants the designer has produced the most difficult to read greens I have ever played. To be fair the greens are pretty sedate without severe mounding although he loves to use teiring. But they are sooooo subtle and difficult to read by design. Putts don't break that look like they will an d others do break when they look like they won't. One of the charms of th course because every round is an adventure.

... This fairway probably looks pretty normal to many across the country, but AZ normally has fast and hard fairways with a lot of roll. Everything is so green right now! This is the lush over seeded fairway compared to what they look like in season and oh yea, we got hit with sprinklers suddenly turning on twice while in the middle of putting! 🤪

Another shotgun start today and I start off on our longest par 5, #11.  I promptly par the first 5 holes, then birdie the par 3 #16.  Then a brain fart sets in and I go double, double, double.  Final tally was 3 doubles and 2 birdies for an 80.  With the exception of the 3 holes that I went brain-dead on with the doubles, I felt like I was playing pretty solid golf.  I do like that I was able to right the ship following 3 doubles in a row.

Format for the game was best gross ball from the A and B player and best net ball for the C and D players and team skins.  Well, my A player was a 4 handicap and has a disastrous day coming in with a 92.  The C player shoots his all time worst round with a 105 and our D player didn't even show up at tee time (so we got a draw).  We were a solid 8th place of 9, 5 shots out of 7th!  LOL.  We did manage to get one team skin where I had a gross birdie and the C player had a net birdie.

Horrible round today, 46* at tee time warmed up to 66*.  Shot 49/46:95 less CH 14 = 81 versus Par 72 = +9 Ugh! With 71% FIR 22% GIR and 39 putts.  Dry eye syndrome set in again and I had a difficult time focusing on the back of the ball, especially putting. Only 3 net birdies with long drive of 197.
p.s. I got cortisone shots in my knees yesterday afternoon so I was a bit wobbly today.

... Always curious how a single digit player does this. other than a very difficult course with tough greens. I certainly understand hitting into hazards. Can you describe the doubles?

Sure...first, I'll comment that my biggest weakness is partial wedge play.  This course has some tight lies with underlying soft, damp soil which gives me the heebie-geebies.  My issue often arises from getting a bit steep on the downswing and the leading edge digging into the turf instead of catching the ball cleanly first or utilizing the bounce effectively.  The only level lie you will ever have on our course is on your tee (overstatement, but close).  I typically will chip with anything from my 57 degree wedge (but normally use my 53*) to a 7 iron depending on lie and situation.

#17 is a par 4 with water right and in front of green so it's typically a layup hole (reachable for the BIG hitters).  I hit a 6 iron off the tee and had 90 yards to pin (75ish yards to clear water/rock border), hit my wedge a hair fat and ball comes to rest in rough (thick bermuda/zosia mix) a foot short of the water hazard.  Grass catches club and I double hit it sending it left of green.  4th shot goes about 6 feet past pin and I miss the putt.

#18 is a par 5.  Driver followed by 7 wood to have 110 yards to pin.  I push the PW a bit, hits the fringe and rolls into the green side trap pin high.  Sand is wet and I send the ball screaming over the green into pine needles  on downhill slope to elevated green sloping away from me.  Pitch it and ball ends up 10 feet below the pin.  Two putt.

#1 is not a difficult hole provided your drive finds the fairway.  Left side is trap and rough, too far right will go down into a valley into the rough.  Anyway, my drive is not bad, clearing the trap and finding myself just in the rough.  Green is elevated and anything short will roll down the hill, anything long is a trap.  Green itself is fairly shallow, but wide.  Although I felt like I struck the ball cleanly, my approach shot falls short and bounces back off the hill into deep rough.  Pitch/chip is short but close enough to putt over a bit of fairway and then the fringe.  Normally, my distance control of these shots is good, but this one wasn't and I left myself a hard breaking 6 footer which I failed to convert.

Interestingly enough, some of the other holes that missed the GIR, I was able to get up and down for par without issue, including similar shots that I duffed and 2 sand saves.  I will try to putt whenever possible because I have little confidence in short wedges.  The bump and run is a much safer play for me, but often is not an option. 60% or more of the time, I will chip/pitch just fine.  It's that intermittent hiccup that gets me every time.  If I could nail down this portion of my game, I have little doubt that my handicap would fall at least 3 strokes.

... Thanks Carl. Sounds like you hit 2 bad shots per every double which makes sense. Seems like you have identified the culprit (wedge play). I have usually found once you identify the weakness, the next step is making it a strength and I wish you the best of luck figuring it out. 👍

Thank you.  Yes, I know the issue.  I practice chipping and pitching more than any other aspect of my game.  I've had numerous lessons and sessions with different teaching pros and, even though my fundamentals are fairly sound, I occasionally find some way to hit poor shots (generally because I lack confidence leading to a timid attempt).  I have great confidence in my putting and the results show.  I don't share that same confidence when I'm standing over the ball for a short pitch and that doesn't help one bit!

Unfortunately, our practice area has a different type of grass from which to chip than on the actual course.  The course is a zoysia hybrid..not sure what's on the practice area, but it gives a much better lie, so it's difficult to replicate what we find on the course.  Not all the areas around the greens are as difficult as some of the others.  I should probably get out late afternoons and practice on the areas that give me problems, but that's not always the easiest thing to do even though I live on the course.  But, if I want to improve, I'm going to have to find the way to get out when the course isn't busy.

When I first moved here in December, the lies were even worse than they are in the summer (wetter).  It was a completely different type of grass and lie than I previously experienced and I found my handicap going from 7 to 11 in short order.  I've been able to get it back to the 7 as I've become more accustomed to the conditions and the course.

Like everything with golf (and other things), it's a process and I'm just a work in progress.  🙂  I'm getting better, but there's still so much room to improve.  Then again, this is why I love golf.

Thanks again, @chisag!  Having me talk through the mistakes helps identify the weakness.

Caz GC again today, warmed up 3 degrees to 43*F but layers and walking is enough to make the body feel warm.  Not the results of yesterday's round, things were not clicking as well without the magic of the rain and absence of others, one of the course regulars who I am sure will be aspiring to match my willingness to golf in all conditions was able to catch up to me again, he hits much better than me and moves quickly.  We also have positive and encouraging conversations so that does take some of the edge off my concentration for routine and time to swing.  Putting was still dialed in and those comments are always welcome when 5, 10, 15 and 20 footers roll for a lag or one-putt.  52 +16 for the day with 7 doubles and two singles for a net 39 +3.  Glad I have one more 9 hole round that could be the one to pair yesterday's net -3 with for a good submission for this week's MGS Forum Tour.  🏌️‍♂️⛳

This kind of matches my last 3years lol, except my last game I finished with a Nett par lol and played to my handicap. That's a beautiful thing..

I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…

Fairway looks good, you get snakes etc? Seen a few in some Sydney golf courses, Red belly black snakes are deadly...

How do you turn them over to check if they have a red belly?  4i?   🤣
