EasyPutter
Played a good round today, another week of descending numbers, 50 Monday, 49 Tuesday, 48 today Wednesday... come on Thursday!!! One notable hole started out with what could have been a "bad shot" that hooked left onto the fairway I had just finished playing. Nobody was behind us so being on the other side of the separating tree line played back up that fairway to where the trees have separation between them. At that point had the longest hit ever with my 19* Tommy Armour #3 Fairway Hybrid (I tracked the shot) that was found not in the leaves where we were looking for it at the 180 yard distance I am used to for that club, but playing partner found it 30 yards beyond that as he headed for his ball to set a new club maximum of 209 yards. sirchunksalot, MattF, GolfSpy TCB and 6 others 9 Quote Derek Verified Hack, ~21 handicap Golf for exercise and peace of mind. |> Big Dogs: First Strike Rattlesnake (10), TeelessTM (13), Tommy Armour TA1 3h (19), Ginty Trouble Club (29) |> Blades: First StrikeTM DeliveranceTM 4(23) 5(26) 6(29) 7(33) 8(37) 9(41) P(45) |> Wedges: Worx (55) Lovett (59) |> Flatstick: L.A.B. CarlH
Better day today. Ball striking was much better than the last 2 times I played. I used one of the new Titleist white box balls (the 348 Proto (Pro V1-X)) and was very pleased with the performance tee to green (as one would expect from a premium golf ball). Anyway, after a 37 on the front 9, I ran into a bit of trouble on #10 and #11, but was able to get back on track and card a 78 for the round. Tomorrow is the start of our 2 day Club Championship tournament and I'm looking forward to playing. On the negative side is that a front is moving in tomorrow late afternoon. Should be done with play by the time it gets here, but it will have some impact on Saturday, as we're expecting up to 2 inches of rain, which will make for some sloppy fairways if that holds true. JerryB
Walked River Heights today. Didn't start out too hot. Lost a few balls on the front nine on my way to a 52. Then I hit the back nine and the wheels came off. Parred 12 and 13 and suddenly I could barely make contact. I even hit a tee shot off the hosel at one point. Went +17 over the last five holes. Seriously contemplated walking off several times on my way to a back nine 57. Shot 109 (+37). Just a ghastly day. GolfSpy TCB
I was able to get in 9 holes last night after work, and decided to carry my bag, and after 9 holes my body was giving me messages... I'm just trying to decide it it was saying "you need to do that more" or "never ever do that again" . I had a couple of shots at the end of the round that were the results of a tired back, but I managed to escape without any damage (to the score, and to my self ) It was a nice evening for the walk, and the weather was warm but not too bad, a bit gusty - and it seemed the breeze was in my face on every hole, even though I essentially walked in a circle around the course. A few shots of note - Par 3 - 160 into the wind, I hit a 6 iron hoping it would clear the front bunker... probably my best iron swing of the day, but pulled it left of the pin - I expected it to be on the left side of the green (blind to the tee box up hill with the bunker guarding it). I found my ball about 20 yards over the green. No ball mark on the green to be found... so I can only assume I flew the green. I estimate it to be a 180 carry 6 iron (which for me is unheard of). Put a decent chip on a sandwedge and sank a 20 footer down the hill for par. Next hole - Par 5 - light breeze into my face TSR3 (re-weighted with the 8g slider giving me D-2 SW with PLB-L shaft), 281 yards center cut. Hit a decent 3w that ballooned a little, but left me with about 70 yards in... pulled my wedge to the left fringe, and two putted for par. Next hole - long dogleg left Par 4 - similar breeze in the face from the tee - 277 yards, center. 150 remaining and hit my approach a little toward the toe... ended up just short of the green and chipped to 2 inches for a kick in par. Happy the way I closed out the 9 holes, a good up and down and two solid drives coming in. Ended with an even par 36 (one bogey, one birdie). I have tee times tomorrow and Sunday, and hope to get an additional nine in before the end of the weekend.. for 3 rounds to post in this week's Virtual Forum Tourney. sirchunksalot, JerryB, cksurfdude and 4 others 6 1 Quote Titleist TSR3 9* (A2 setting) Driver - Graphite Design Tour AD UB-5 R1 Titleist TSR2+ 3 Wood - Graphite Design Tour AD UB-5 R1 Srixon ZX 5W Callaway Paradym 4-PW Titleist Vokey SM9 50-08, 54-10 & 58-08 Scotty Cameron Super Select Newport 2.5 2023 Titleist ProV1

Syks7
Couple good rounds in a row. 44/41 85 at Rustic Canyon and 38/what might have been at woodley. Had to leave the 14th green at +4. . Rustic was great. The front was a little mediocre, mostly because of two doubles from attempting too aggressive of a play. The back started the same, but turned at #14. From the blue tees is a 466 yard dogleg beast of a hole with a minimum tee shot carry of 190 yards. That day they had the blues all the way to the back of the box so carry was more like 220. I hit my best drive of the day, easily cleared the esa and left myself and uphill 190 yard shot to the pin. It was short on the high side and required two putts to convert. I consider bogey to be solid there so I wasn't upset. 15 is an uphill par 3 to a narrow 3 tiered green. It's 135 yards that plays like 147. I hit long into the hill of the upper tier and watched it trickle back toward the pin and out of sight. Before everyone gets excited, you can't see the base of the flag from the tee so no hio today. No lie, I had my hopes up, but I'll take a six inch birdie putt every day. 16 is another beast par 4. 466 yards downhill from a very windy exposed tee. Another bogey is good enough for me on this one. 17 a nice little downhill par 3 with large but tough green.. Par 18 is a tough 437 yard dogleg finishing hole into a tough green. Red stake ESA all down the right and ob left. Hit a great drive the overcooked a 6 iron from 190 (hoping to bounce up) onto the wrong part of the green which pushed it all the way onto the shared practice green portion. 80 feet for birdie . Got that to within 7 and drilled the par putt. I played what I consider the toughest stretch on the course at +1!! Which lead into yesterday. I wanted to see if the command I felt like I had at Rustic would continue on a much easier course. It absolutely did. I was +2 after 9 and could easily have been even. Both bogeys were from poorly aimed approach shots. I still almost got up and down on both. I par'd both 9 &10 for the first time ever. Made a silly mistake on 12 to go to +3 before disaster struck. Phone rings, my wife can't make it to pick up my daughter due to work commitments. . I raced through two more before I had to call it quits.... one par one bogey. Standing on 15 at +4 and having to leave when you've been playing the last 4 holes at an average of around +2 for the last couple months is soul crushing. In fairness I probably would have had to play 18 in total darkness if I had continued, but still. Since I made it through 14 I can technically record net par for the final 4. Which is irritatingly enough +2. I can't bring myself to do it though. If it was something I'd shot before why not, but I'm not going to record a breaking 80 round without actually doing it. Every time I drive up the entry road I feel giddy that I have access to such a great golf course at such a reasonable price. As you mention it's even more impressive when you run across some predevelopment pictures of it where the topography is exactly the same minus the fairway and greens. There's some pictures out there of the barranca/waste area in front of the first green that aside from the brush instead of green look exactly the same. & Yes # 17 has been responsible for more three putts than I can count. It's deceptively fast, a lot downhill, with a surprising amount of side slope from that left side into the right. I think I'm going to buy a strackaline book just because it's so fascinating how they built the greens to look like they slope one way then they all slope toward the gate! I'm really happy with that par on 18 too. Josh Ross
Well, finally made my way back on the course after 84 long days. Have gone to the driving range a few times while rehabbing my ankle injury and the results were terrible... shanking shots, no control over ball flight with random hooks and slices, just flat out bad. Through three range trips and about 75 shots each time, I hit maybe 10-15 shots that looked normal. I was pretty defeated and lost my drive to play. Up until the injury, I had been playing the best golf of my life and felt like I was well on my way to being ready to compete but now I looked like I'd never played before. My dad talked me into playing 9 holes today and it started out as bad as possible. Keep in mind my last two rounds prior to injury were 71, 75. Here I sat on the par 5 6th tee box (the hole I live on and have made birdie or eagle on for 8 straight rounds) and I am +9 with 6 putts. Something clicked, I birdied the hole after a 309 yard drive and lipped out eagle putt, and shot -2 on the last 4 holes. It was like someone literally flipped a switch, my shots went back to being crisp, having a beautiful baby draw, and I couldn't miss. CarlH
Disastrous club championship tournament for me the last 2 days. Played 2 of my worst rounds of the year, back to back. Weather yesterday was decent but windy and course wasn't set up ridiculously difficult, yet I exhibited poor ball striking and downright embarrassing putting. Last night, thunderstorms and tornado watches brought about 1.5 inches of rain to the course and it was sloppy fairways/rough, wet sand traps, and the greens did not get mowed or rolled prior to play and they were very slow (by our course norms). Again, I struck the ball poorly, although I did putt a little better. End result was placing near the bottom of my flight. On the plus side, scores were typically higher for everyone (except our resident ex-pro golfer) and nobody really lit it up. None the less, I am very disappointed by my personal play. ejgaudette, cksurfdude, MattF and 5 others 6 2 Quote Driver: Rogue ST Max (10.5* set at -1 and neutral) -- Mitsubishi Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Fairway: Rogue ST Max 3 wood (16.5*) and Heaven Wood (20*)-- Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Hybrids: Rogue ST Max 5H (23*)--Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Irons: Apex CF19 6-9, PW, AW -- KBS Tour Graphite TGI 70 shafts R +1/2 inch 3* upright Wedges: Edison 53* and 57* KBS PGI 80 Graphite +1/2 inch 2* upright Putter: L.A.B. Kenny B
For those of you that read the "Weather in your neck of the woods" thread, we got a helluva wind storm yesterday and last night; lasted about 30 hours total until this evening. Part of our town lost power early this morning. Winds were sustained 30-50 with gusts to 65mph; some areas outside town recorded 85mph. My wife and I headed to the course for our 10am tee time; trees down everywhere and limbs lying all over the course... This big evergreen smashed our port-a-potty by the #13 tee. Another port-a-potty blew over by the #16 green. Our pump house on #18 lost its removable roof used to install pumps by crane... but the dang branch on the tree behind the pump house that hangs over the fairway is STILL THERE!! Dang it!! I hit that branch a lot on 2nd shots! When we teed off it was 46º and winds only 18-25 with gusts to 30mph. I shot 42 on the front (+5) and EVEN par 35 on the back nine. Hit 10 of 13 fairways and 8 GIR. One of my better days in the wind in a long time. Popular Post cjeffs12
Shot the best round of my life so far today. I shot a 76, so close to achieving one of my goals for the year of breaking 75. My swing is feeling amazing, my pro had me feeling a caddy drag to start my takeaway, and it is really working wonders. I am trying to play a fade, and it’s not quite a fade, but it’s keeping it very straight or a slight draw. The ball striking has never been better, I am loving my irons! I have also made a huge equipment change, I’ve change to the Z Star, the Pro V1x was too much spin on my irons, and the Chrome Soft X LS caused to many fliers and I struggle around the greens with the LS. silver & black
It was a georgeous day in Ohio today.... 68* and slightly overcast... perfect for golf. I started out terrible on the front 9. The greens were like putting a snot puck on ice...lol. I shot a +12 for 46 on the front. I finally got a handle on the speed of the greens on the back. I shot a +1 for 36 on the back for a total of 82. If only I could have figured it out a bit sooner....LOL. This could be the last round of the year for me. JerryB
Got out to Mill Creek in Geneva for an outing today. My buddy Kevin invited Owen and I to join him and a friend but Owen's been ill so he was replaced by another friend of Kevin's, then Kevin's first friend got sick this morning so it was just three of us. Still with me? Good. I'd never played Mill Creek before. There are several blind tee shots, lots of water and generally tricky conditions. Still breezy this morning and the most evil pin positions I've ever seen. Flags on the edge of ridges or a foot from the front fringe, etc. I didn't play too bad. Struggled a bit on the first few holes but the I was pretty steady. As the alcohol kicked in with my partners I wound up being the consistent option on the back nine. We finished -7. Winning team went -18. Based on the wind and the pin locations I'm a little skeptical . But at any rate, a solid round and some good fun with a couple good dudes. If I don't manage to get out again, it was a great capper to the season. cksurfdude, silver & black, sirchunksalot and 4 others 7 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter
DiscipleofPenick
Played on Fri & Sat as we are having some gorgeous 70+ degree weather right now. Friday I played an easier course, because my MIL gave me a free pass I needed to use before season end. It's called Creekwood, and I do play it occassionally as the people are nice, it's affordable, not crowded, and the greens are fantastic. I shot 37-37 for 74 with 4 birdies. Got hung up on the back behind a 4-some, so I skipped #14 and just played 18 twice. That 4-some was 3 holes behind a 5-some, as I caught them on the 17th green. Saturday was probably the last round of the year at Sleepy Hollow (Stanley Thompson, top 10 muni in US) with @MaxEntropy. I couldn't do too much right with wild drives, chunked irons, and 3-putts aplenty for a +9 44 on the front, one of my worst 9-holes of the year. However, I figured something out on the back for a 38 with my lone birdie. so overall an 82 isn't the worst score ever. The 40mph+ winds probably didn't help either. But I really drove the ball poorly for almost the entire day. Finally hit decent drives on #10, 13, 16, and 18. The focus on my game for next season - driver consistency & wedge proximity. Maybe I get to play 9 more before the weather turns on Friday. ejgaudette, CarlH, MaxEntropy and 5 others 8 Quote Take Dead Aim Driver: PXG 0211 10.5* Fairway: Titleist 917 F3 15* Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro Boxer Gold 18* Irons: MacGregor MT-86 Pro Wedges: Vokey 50/54/58 Putter: SeeMore X2 Costa del Mar Ball: Srixon Z-Star
MattF
Played Friday and Sunday at Windmill. Friday I shot a 46/44 90. It was pretty ordinary, driver was giving me the shits. Sunday was better 45/40 85. Driver was a lot better with only 3 "bad" drives that left me out of position but still have a shot available. Hoping to get out for one last one on Thursday morning. rkj427
Weather here in southeast Michigan this past Saturday had temperatures approaching 70 degrees, but steady winds of 25 - 30 mph, and gusts up to 50 mph. Headed to Stony Creek Metro Park and played 18 with a pair of friends. One similar in age to me, the other quite a lot younger. Played reasonably well tee to green, with more than 1/2 of the greens covered in leaves by the blowing winds, making putting an adventure to say the least. Shot 40 on the front with a birdie on the 2nd hole, par 4 376 yards after hitting a wind assisted drive and only having 80 yards left to the green. Had a 44 on the back with a "lost ball" in the fairway penalty taken due to too many leaves to move to look for it. We all agreed to keep playing here as long as the course is open, although the temps. here are supposed to only be in the upper 30's this next weekend. I have Friday off work, temps. should still be upper 50's for the high so I am hoping to get out at least that day. Not many deer or cranes walking around this visit, but I did mange to see this turkey behind the green on one of the par 3's. gavinski91, EasyPutter, JerryB and 5 others 8 Quote Driver & Fairway: Titleist TSR3 10 degree - Ventus TR Blue & TSR3 15 - Project X Hzrdus Smoke Black Hybrid: Callaway Apex UW 19 - Hzrdus Smoke Black Irons: Titleist T200 3G (4) & T150 - (5-G) - Project X LZ Wedges: Vokey SM8 54, and 58 Putter: Cameron Phantom X 7 Ball: Pro V1 & Maxfli Tour
EasyPutter
Got out on Saturday at Genesee Valley GC with son Patrick for a 9 hole round on the front 9 of the North Course and hit a 49 in strong gusty winds with leaves blowing around like drifting snow. And this video starts just after all those leaves it seemed were flowing past the ball. Only lost 4 balls but found 3 so never ran out of one to play. The greens were excellent and Putts per Hole was 1.6, not bad with blowing leaves sometimes changing conditions during the putt. Far better conditions for putting than I have been playing for the past couple weeks on my home course. This is what the 4th green looked like at the moment, blowing winds moved the leaves constantly hiding and revealing golf balls haphazardly... Best part of my game was irons, for a change, but tricky greens with lots of slope meant a couple 3-putt bogies on par 3's. Started the front with 3 straight doubles (after what ended up being the best drive of the day on 1 ). #9 was dead into the wind. The card says 357. David Leighton Reid
Saturday's round was cold, windy, and misty. Only one other die-hard in our group showed up to brave the weather and he quit after 9 holes. I believe we were the only dedicated a.k.a. idiots on the course. On the back 9 I played two balls so didn't keep a total score. On Sunday, much nicer weather and I turned in a 76. My fairways hit and greens in regulation were not great, but I chipped and putted very well. Two birdies, one double bogey, 4 bogeys, and 11 pars. ejgaudette
Got out for the last round of the year, indeed the course is closed as of today. So to that end I had the best driving day of the year. Only one really bad swing where I got out of sequence, otherwise a number of fairways hit with straight ball flight. Started off with a tough bogey hitting my approach and plugging it into a bunker. Made a few pars in a row before knocking down a wedge from 105 for a birdie. Then came my worst drive lost right resulting in a double. Also made a bit of a mess on the 8th going bunker to bunker but saved the bogey (if that is a thing). Started to find a groove though on the 11th. From there it was pretty much driver, iron/wedge, 2 putt par from 12 to 16. Just the best kind of boring golf. Finally hit a bad second shot on 17 led to bogey. Then caught a flier on 18 but got up and down for a 5 over 76. Closing the round and the year it have been a great year. Took my handicap down a couple shots to 5.5, and of course I feel there is room for improvement to get more consistent off the especially. It really was pretty easy today playing from well struck tee shots. Here is hoping that I will somehow keep this driver swing over the winter months. TR1PTIK
I played Saturday which was my first time to really test the swing changes I've been trying to make. The range and back nine were both closed from rain, so I just played the front 9 and called it a day. Not surprisingly my very first swing didn't go well - topped my 4-iron - so I dropped another ball since I hadn't really warmed up or anything. They say the second guy is always better, and man did he ever come through this time! 253-yards to the middle of the fairway with 4-iron!!! To be fair, the tee shot on #1 at this course plays downhill and I did have some assistance from the wind, but I've never done that before on this course and I pretty much always use 4-iron off the tee. From there I'd go on to birdie the first and everything else was bogey or par to finish at 40 (+4). Ball striking was the best I've experienced almost all year. I had a few shots that were a touch thin, but nothing wild and only one drive that strayed from the fairway enough to be concerning. I hit 57% of fairways (about average for me currently) and 67% greens in regulation (around twice as many GIR's as what I averaged for two-thirds of the year). The most concerning stat for me was 3-putts. I had three of those and only one of them would have been "reasonable". All were the result of being too aggressive on the first putt. However, my proximity to the hole needs some improvement and would have been a real difference maker if I had selected the right club on a few shots. I think as I gain more control with the irons, this will be a real game changer for me because I'm not a bad putter by any stretch. Even with some long putts, including those where I was too aggressive on speed, I was constantly sniffing the hole. In fact, one of those 3-putts was the result of two lip-outs from ~10ft. Anyway, I'd call Saturday a success, but I'm itching to get out and play a full 18 under "normal" conditions. Hopefully, I can make that happen before the cold settles in over Texas. sirchunksalot, David Leighton Reid, ejgaudette and 6 others 9 Quote Driver: ST190 9.5* Fujikura Atmos Blue 5S Fairway Wood: ST190 15* Fujikura Atmos Blue 6S Hybrid: CLK 17* Fujikura Speeder EVO HB Irons: J40 CB (3-PW) Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 Wedges: Milled Grind 2 54* & 58* Dynamic Gold S200 Putter: Tri-Hot 5k Two 34" Bag: Players 5 Stand Bag Ball: Maxfli Tour
