Two years ago I had to have right knee surgery for torn meniscus, torn plica and slightly displaced knee cap. Pretty routine surgery but I was curious if there are many back knees of the golf swing that require surgery (not sure which leg you had surgery on). Not a lot of info, but I found a very comprehensive report from two Drs in Aus that took a lot of measurements. Whether you had surgery on your knee, or other part of the leg, with a proper swing, at the top of the backswing and first 1/3 of the down swing, the back leg absorbs ~300% force or 3x body weight. IIRC, the front leg absorbs 200% or 2x body weight. There are also significant internal rotational forces. Bottom line, golf puts a lot of strain and forces on the legs. After 7 weeks of PT , I was cleared by my dr who also does knees & shoulders for UGA football, who told me to take it easy for another 90 days. Said I could do anything I wanted, but I would feel discomfort. The he laughed and said “if you played football, you would have already played two games”. Anyways, good luck and take care. As you know, it’s a process and will take as long as it takes. Gary, I was a baseball (including a few years of professional and semi-pro ball) and football (just HS and club ball) player, and have had a total of six knee surgeries (meniscus on the right knee, meniscus, ACL and MCL on the left knee), but this recent cancer surgery was done on my right leg about 6" below my kneecap on and next to the shin bone. I didn't play golf when I had the first two (meniscus) knee surgeries, as I was still playing competitive baseball as a catcher, but when I had compound tears of the left knee meniscus, ACL and MCL, I was and had been an avid golfer for just about 20 years. The rehab and recovery from that series of surgeries was by far the most lengthy and rigorous recovery and took a total of about 9 months. I find that the forward knee (in my case, the left knee as I am a right-handed golfer) takes the most torque due to the twisting or bracing motion on the downswing and follow-through. That's why Tiger Woods had so much trouble with his left knee. I am perpetually surprised that Rory McIlroy hasn't had more left knee problems, as he puts a tremendous amount of strain on that knee in his downswing and particularly the follow-through. cksurfdude, Sluggo42 and EasyPutter 3 Quote DR - Callaway Paradym X, Newton Motion 4-Dot 4W - T.E. You’ve certainly had your share of knee problems, but I’m sure the years as a catcher put a lot of stress on them as well as the back. Your comments about the forward knee with the extensive torque was what I had always figured so that’s why I was curious about the back knee, then surprised about my findings. IVe also battled laying back some with the driver which increases the back knee torque. You are right about Rory - he gets tremendous rotation and I love watching him play. Happy recovery, and I hope the cancer is 100% gone! Btw, lifetime Tigers fan here, and hoping they can have a major league team in the next couple years. Plus I've not had any surgery on my knees previously, my GP was talking to a surgeon friend who thinks it's started due to losing 30kgs and learning to walk again. He's suggested that in time it should improve as my leg muscles get stronger, as a child when learning to walk we don't weigh much so no excessive weight to carry around sounds good right? Popular Post Grand Stranded
This game is driving me crazy… I played the Dye Course at Barefoot today. It was freezing this morning, and my front 9 was abysmal. Ball striking short game and putting. I had nothing. Put that all together and you get a 48. Then, because golf is stupid, my swing kicked in on the back 9 and I hit the ball about as well as I could. Unfortunately my putting stroke seems to have left me, and I can’t make a thing. I shot a 42 on the back with 2 pars, one birdie. The 6 other holes I could have made par if I sunk putts from 8 feet and in. Nobody expects to make all of those, but 4 were from inside 5 feet and I couldn’t make one? Ugh. Popular Post CarlH
@Grand StrandedI had a similar day ... despite playing solid golf last week, 6 days later I struggle. Couldn't buy a putt. Ball striking wasn't too far out of kilter, but scoring was an issue all day. I did manage to beat your round by a couple of strokes, but only because I parred the last 3 holes...LOL Weather was cold when we started and never warmed up all that much, although I did remove my fleece warmup jacket after 6 holes. Grand Stranded
The struggle is real boys. My game has completely left me, and I played terribly again today. 46 on the front, and after a double on 10, I started trying every kind of “band aid” I could think of, but nothing worked, and I spiraled completely out of control, shooting a 51 which gave me a sporty 97. That will bring my cap up to over 14 tomorrow, which means I’ll have gone up almost 3 strokes in two months. Tomorrow is our Member-Member Tournament and my 11 cap teammate shot a mirror image 51-46-97 also. Neither one of us are exactly firing on all cylinders heading into this thing. chisag
... Another excellent partner day! Paul's previous best was an 84 and he shot an 80 today. 18 is a tough finishing holes and if you don't carry to 225 you land on the uphill with no roll. Paul hit a 5 wood approach that snuck a little right and onto the range, took his drop then casually hit a wedge to a foot. Had it not just snuck past the red stake he would have shot a 79. I have given him 2 suggestions in 3 years and he took them to heart. Never said a word to him about putting but that has improved tremendously and not to give myself a callus from patting my own back, he said he just studied my putting and tried to emulate my stroke and just concentrate on speed. It was a fun round to watch. ... Fwiw, he is also the guy that played some really crappy knock offs other than an Aero Burner driver and after trying to get him to accompany me to the PGA SS too many times, I just booked him a demo day full bag fitting from Callaway last spring and he ended up buying driver, 5 wood, 3 and 4 hybrids and a full set of irons. Popular Post sirchunksalot
Played nine holes today as a practice round. I was basically hitting two shots from the same spot and seeing how low I could go. It was a cool 48 degrees with gusty winds and thought this would be a fun way to get out and play without any of the mental stress that usually accompanies me to the course and start building more positive thoughts into my game. Anyhow, I ended up carding a +6 42 which involved 3 pars and 6 bogeys. My driver was good with the exception of 2 holes, one of which I popped one up and the second was a massive pull him into the weeds. I hit two good shots with my 3 wood, but the one I was most proud of I hit on the par 5 3rd through tree branches that landed just short of the green. I hit my irons well again today with only a couple of shanks but I knew that if I hit a bad one, I had another chance to make it up. Wedges were good, I didn't hit a lot of greens and I was able to hit a couple within 4 feet. My putting was solid and I had a forty footer just lip out on 7 that would have saved par. I'll be doing this again, it was the most stress free round once had in a long time and I just had a good time being out there. CarlH
Not a great day on the course today. Temp was a high of 45. It's that time of the year when our grass goes dormant and we have a tight lie with underlying soft, wet dirt...play havoc with my partial wedge shots as I tend to come in too steep and catch it a bit behind the ball far too often. In any case, we played 3 man team skins with all 3 balls counting (gross scores only). I didn't play well, shooting an 86. As it turns out, nobody else played well either. Our group has several single digit handicap players, ranging from 3 to 9, and the low score for the day was an 82. My 86 was bested only by the 82 and an 83 with one other player tying me (15 players played today). My team won 4 team skins, netting us our money back plus $1.00. There was a total of 13 skins. I mostly wear them waking in at work and my fingers still get a little cold. They do offer decent grip on your clubs, but it is a bit awkward having them on both hands. I've used two gloves playing in Sydney because I'd sweat so much some days because of the humidity, was awkward but better than slippery grips.. sirchunksalot, cksurfdude and EasyPutter 3 Quote I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…
Kenny B
Played in bitter cold yesterday; sunny but cold!! High 31º; low 16º Course didn't open until 12:30pm after a frost delay, and they did a shotgun start so everyone could finish before dark... which we did having to wait on the group in front of us most of the way. We started on the par 4 #11. First real round on greens where a ball that landed on the front of a green ran to the back... or off!! I hit some crisp iron shots and felt pretty good shooting an 81 with only one double... that came on a 3-putt; I had two other 3-putts. Worst round for 3-putts on my course this year; which cost me another round in the 70's. The greens were frozen underneath the surface; ball marks were evident, but couldn't be repaired. Didn't play today as the sun didn't come out; only 29º and we have an air stagnation advisory. cjeffs12
So it’s been very cold (for my area in Texas) and wet, but I am very thankful I can still play golf. Saturday it rain so I didn’t play a full round, but Sunday played 18. My game is really starting to hit cruise control, even on less than ideal conditions I am easily breaking 80. Last week I had a ground breaking lesson about wedge control. I’ve been good from inside 60, but 85 to 100 is hot and cold. My pro had me hit PW to our green complex with flag at 85 yards. I hit 15 balls, never missed the green and most of them were inside ~15-20 feet. He then had me hit another set with my 56*, what I normally would hit, first one stuck to 3 feet, second to 20 feet, and the 3rd was 20 yards left. I immediately switched back to my PW, and it has been amazing on the course. It’s a low flighted spinny shot that has so much control, I have a lot of those shots a round, and it really boosted my GIR this weekend. I am ashamed I didn’t try this sooner, but it honestly feels like a cheat code. Popular Post fozcycle
Shot a 39/40:79 today with two birdies and an eagle plus only 28 putts. On top of that, my longest drive was 260 yards. 9/14 FIR fo4 64%; 6/18 GIR for 33% with 50% Up n Downs! The thrill of the day came after a birdie on par 5 #9, followed by a 107 yard Eagle on par 4 #10, then followed by a birdie on par 5 #11. rkj427, CarlH, MattF and 7 others 9 1 Quote Driver: 0311 XF 10.5* w/Project X Cypher 40 gram Senior shaft or 0811 XF 12* w/Evenflo Riptide CB Senior shaft Fairways: 0211 5W & 7W w/ Evenflo Riptide CB regular shaft and Tour Edge E521 9W w/Fubuki HD50 regular shaft Hybrid: None in bag at the moment Irons: Titleist T300 5-PW w/Fubuki MV Senior graphite shafts w/Golf Pride Tour Wedges: Edison forged 49*, 53* and 57* wedges with KB PGI Senior shafts(80 grm). Popular Post Parshooter36
I cut out of work early to take advantage of the 60 degree weather and try out my new irons outside. I absolutely love the height I am getting and my tendinitis did not flare up afterwards, so I'd say the graphite shafts are doing their job! I had a great round with a 6 over 76. Gotta love that honeymoon phase. cksurfdude, Sluggo42, ejgaudette and 7 others 10 Quote Driver: LTDx Fairway: Sim2 Max 3HL Fairway: G425 Max 9 Wood Hybrid: 2020 CLK 5 Hybrid Irons: ZX4 6-AW Wedges: CBX Zipcore 50° 54° & 58° Putter: Vale Ball: Q-Star Tour Yellow

Monday played poorly and didn’t hit anything well +6. Tuesday was a little smoother PXG driver was doing good and Mizuno irons behaved, +3. Amazing how this game can drive you nuts sometimes.
