I've read all the studies for both cases and after observing ball/pin interactions first hand, have determined that I prefer to have the pin out or tended, like we used to do before the rule change. From what I've seen from the people that I play with, more and more are reverting back to taking the pin out for most putts that they feel they have a chance to make. Have to agree, not getting the “drops “ I used to get. Just have to get the “Boyz” to start pin tending. I usually figure it out the day before I leave for home!! My handicapped BIL had a rough time so we are taking this weekend off; we are headed to Yuma to visit a cousin wintering there from Idaho. Probably a difference in flagstick material/design. ... Yup, like all the studies I find the pin only helps and never hurts. If it bounces off without going in, it was traveling too fast to drop with the pin out. I hated putting with it in when Covid rules hit. But I got used to it and now prefer it in. I have found it helps my aim as well as the cup from more than 10 feet away can look pretty small but the pain allows me to aim dead at it or just to the right or left for breaking putts. We do have thin pins here in the desert. And of course while not a DeShamBo fan, the guy is a technical nerd hen it comes to golf and does his research so if he always wants it in, there is science behind that decision. ... I would guess recreationally at muni's I play, 90% leave it in now. Every now and then I run across a player that always wants it out. If they are good putters I don't mind at all, but it can be annoying to see a tour wannabe need the flag out and routinely 3 putt and the pin doesn't effect their putts missing the hole by a foot or more. I am not a fan of taking it out and putting it back in either. While I have a preference for leaving it in, if I play with someone that takes it out I am perfectly fine with just leaving it out. There are also a few that like to take it out for short birdie putts and that's cool too. Kenny B, funkyjudge, cksurfdude and 3 others 5 1 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... I had a downhill pitch that I had to land just in the fringe/collection area with a generous 10 feet to work with, then let it trickle on to a tight pin. I like to use my 50* and bump and run that shot but the gnarly dormant bermuda looking like Guy Fiere's hair was between me and the fringe so I had to fly it just over with my LW. Missed clearing it by 1". ONE INCH and even downhill it stuck in the bermuda like a dart hitting a board. Sheesh, you would think it would at least jump out some and come up a little short but it left me with a difficult chip because as you know if you don't hit the chip with plenty of speed the club head can dig into the Devils Grass and dead stop like it hit a wall. So just took my medicine and open the club face and made sure it came out going 15' past the hole. A double bogie from 15 feet and I didn't hit a bad shot. cksurfdude, sirchunksalot, Bang60 and 2 others 3 2 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... TR1PTIK
Much better second round of 2023. Went 41/43 for an 84 with 32 putts (only 13 on the first nine!). Played Southern Oaks and started on #10. All was going well and I was humming along until #2 (11th hole of the day). I used a GolfNow hot deal for my tee time and was paired with three other guys; we caught up to another foursome who were painfully slow and had to wait on every hole from then on. There was no one holding them up so it was kind of a bummer but I thought I was pretty positive and upbeat as far as my attitude goes. I wasn't letting it get to me and just kinda joked around with the guys I was playing with but clearly, I need to work on how to maintain my game when things slow down. Perhaps my next range session will include a 5-minute sit down in between shots. IDK, gotta figure out something... Highlights of the round: 5 drives over 300 yards with my longest at 320. 1 birdie on the day (had a 2-footer for a 2nd one and shoved it right ). 2 very good bunker shots. The first came on a Par 3 and was a pretty standard bunker shot from the flat; I carried most of the way to the hole with spin and stopped it within 2ft. The 2nd came on the Par 4 18th and I played a chunk-&-run that settled about 3ft left of the hole. Made the putt to save par! Strokes Gained for the round (compared to a 5hcp) - +2.58 Off the Tee, -4.50 Approach, -0.82 Short Game, -0.32 Putting. 30-ft double bogey save on #17 after my first tee shot went OB and I chunked my 2nd tee shot woefully short of the green. fozcycle
Visiting my Sister-in-Law in Guntersville AL this week. We are residing at one of the chalets at the State Park overlooking Lake Guntersville, built by the TVA in 1935-39, it was designed to allow for control of the river levels for the Tennessee river so it would be more navigable. Temp was 41* to 45* during the round, tee time was 10:30 and I played in 3hrs 24 min. The course was extremely mountainous plus it was cart path only! Also, I forgot my golf shoes(I only have 17 pair) so I bought a new pair of FJ Traditions with spikes, and boy did I need them to hike up and down the fairways from the cart path. I played the White tees at 5900+ yards. This was a little extreme for me but I like a challenge and shot a 46/47:93. I had 10/14 or 71% FIR; 4/18 or 22% GIR and 34 Putts. DStar
I feel like my game is starting to improve now. Played a pairs betterball on Sunday in freezing conditions so not the best but I find it really good fun playing when the conditions aren't great. Greens were rock hard so no pin-seeking but trying to plot a way around was great. Finished with 38 points which I scored on at least 12 holes. Birdied 2 of the last 3 holes including a 320y drive right up the middle of 18 . 11/14 fairways hit now that I've worked out my aim and swing. Short game was really good and 4 x 1 putt with no 3 putts. I was fine putting from inside 3 feet and outside 5'. But 4' with a little break was not a put I could make. On the flip side flip side I made every putt I took from 5-7' and holed a couple from beyond 10. Golf is dumb sometimes. If I could find the 'feel' for control of my game I would feel much better. cksurfdude, sirchunksalot, Rickp and 1 other 1 3 Quote Driver 0311 Gen 5 -- Tensei CK Orange 60 Woods 0341 3W -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Hybrids 0317X 2&4 -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Irons ZX7 4/AW -- C-Taper Lite 110 Wedges T7 55º @55/7 -- TT DG Spinner Putter DF2.1 or Link.1 -- Accra Ball Zstar Diamond

Haha you're not on your own that's for sure, I'm wondering when I'm going to hit more consistent shots in a row on the same bloody hole. Yesterday I hit 3 great shots out of 4 and still got par, the missed chip 2nd shot wasn't too bad because I hit a great putt close to kick in. I need to remind myself of my pre-shot routine so think a note taped to my wrist might work.... sirchunksalot, Rickp, cksurfdude and 1 other 2 2 Quote I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…

Grand Stranded
On 1/17/2023 at 11:06 PM, Will_Mac said: Yesterday, 37/41/78. 10 fairways, 8 greens, 31 putts. On a day where I couldn't hit a single good iron shot, I'll take the score and run. But #17 stings. Par-5, not a hard hole at all. I should've taken less club off the tee because with driver, it demands a draw or taking it straight left of center. Nope, I hit it straight but right/center and about 20' long and OB. Bogey putt died at the mouth of the hole for double. Ouch. But overall, I'm psyched with the winter state of my game. I'd essentially lost my swing for a few years now. Long story about back injuries (nothing new) and epidural shots (first in 2019, coincidentally marking my decline). To explain it briefly, with pain eliminated and thankfully at that, gone with it also was my swing's natural limiter. Over time and quickly at that, my swing became way too long and sloppy. For this inflexible golfer, that spelled cascading disaster. But what I recently discovered as another issue over this time was that my grip was ever slightly off. Also, once a golfer apt to early wrist hinge, I discovered that somewhere along the way, I delayed it. Dramatically. Where that's fine and even ideal for most, it's not for me. It's only been 8 rounds since I've addressed both, but positive results were instant. I've now shot in the 70s for 6/8 rounds. The other two were rounds of 80 and 81. Sorry for rambling on, but for the first time in a few years, I'm genuinely excited at the idea that I might finally be on the right path. I'll take any acceptable path, rather than the series of previous guesses and wishful leaps by a previously frustrated and golf depressed dude. Please?! This game is so amazing. It’s the only one I can think of where a player of your level can be as frustrated as one at mine.
