... PLEASE  don't feed the Bears or encourage Yellow Ball. This is a PSA:

Nearly everyone has heard the timeless warning, “Do not encourage Yellow Ball!” You may be wondering, “What’s the big deal?” Well, it is a big deal, and we want to let you in on some reasons you should not encourage Yellow Ball.

Yellow Ball hunts for and eats many kinds of wild berries, honey, nuts, and a variety of plants. Eighty-five percent of Yellow Ball’s diet is vegetation. The remaining fifteen percent of their food intake consists of fish, bees, insects, and other small animals.

He is a great forager, and all the food the needs to survive is found in abundance on the course.

However, Yellow Ball enjoys the mouthwatering taste of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings as much as humans do. Once Yellow Ball gets a taste of human food, he wants more.

He has a keen sense of smell and the aroma brings him rolling. Unlike people, Yellow Ball relishes eating out of a garbage can, from an abandoned picnic table, or along the course behind you.

Sadly, out of ignorance or because some people purposefully ignore the restrictions put in place regarding the encouraging of Yellow Ball, in extreme circumstances he must be killed by starters or rangers.

Why? Because an aggressive Yellow Ball becomes much too dangerous for the human population. These deaths can be avoided in most circumstances if we simply do not encourage Yellow Ball.

Pinehurst rangers have the authority to issue citations with penalties up to $5,000 and six months in jail for offenders. Rangers can and will issue citations for 3 putting with Yellow Ball, slicing Yellow Ball, and not storing Yellow Ball properly.

It’s the only one I can think of where a player of your level can be as frustrated as one at mine.

So… 10 days ago the wife comes down with Covid… so we do out best to stay in opposite sides of the house, masks, disinfectants, and so on. So I remain ok for a week, but then on Monday, guess who tests Positive? Me! Big surprise eh? But, as soon as the wife tested positive, I have skipped playing everyday, to ensure the safety of my friends.
so now, it’s been 2 weeks since I’ve played, and at least another week to be sure.

FYi- I’ve been taking Paxlovid. I had a runny nose for 2 days and that has been the extent of my sickness. Virtually nothing… just a big pain in the butt

Ahhhhh the kids (26 and 22) in our home both got Covid, my wife/hero and I didn't but I suspect in this case we're more careful with masks and keeping away from crowds of people....

Tough day today.  2-3 club wind.  Opening holes were directly into the wind and I doubled the first 2.  Ended up shooting an 85.  Greens were slow today, in addition to the wind...just made for a tough round.

Best day today on Day 11 of our two week trip to Phoenix.  Decently warm and sunshine; 65º.  This was the second time we played Palmbrook CC in Sun City.  I like the layout of this course and it's better grass to hit out of compared to others we played.

Shot 42/38 = 80 with my first birdie of 2023 on th short par 3 #11 over water to a back left pin... little 9i draw to 3 feet and finally made a putt!!  I had a few stoopid mistakes that hurt me getting in the 70's.  Only one double though!

Yeah, doesn't look good for our last round on Monday at McCormick Ranch... cold and rainy.  We leave Tuesday am!!  So we miss the rally nice weather!   I'm thinking that future trips will be pushed back until mid- to late February!

Wasn’t great, a windy and wet 88. Irons still my weak link and did not putt well at all. Probably had 7-8 putts either rim out, burn the edge or stop on the edge. Might go see the coach for a tune up on the irons soon. A fun walk though with some good drives and chipped much better than last time.

It wasn’t real golf, but I played indoor golf on a simulator yesterday, which was the first time that I have swung a golf club since December 22 because of prostate surgery that I had right after the holidays. I played 9 holes on Pebble Beach on the HD Golf simulator and shot 37 on the front nine with three birdies (tee shots inside of 4 feet on both par-3 holes, including 1’-2” on #7, and an approach shot to inside of 8’ on hole #6). I was shocked, because I was swinging OK during my warmup, but nothing spectacular and most shots were about 10% short of my normal distance for whatever club I was hitting.

Overall, I was pleased with my performance, considering that I had not done anything but putt on the carpet at home in the prior 40 days. I am playing on my winter golf tour next Thursday, and I will be practicing indoors once or twice before that event. The following week, our tour has its two-day “Winter Classic”, and I intend to be ready to contend in the senior division in that event!

Finally got in 18 on my new home course. I didn’t keep score today because I just wanted to get a feel for the course. This is a very different course than I am used to for sure. So many placement shots due to the amount of dog legs. Very tall pines so no short cuts for the most part. There are long approaches because of the dog legs on quite a few holes. Like really long. 200 yards to the dog leg turn then 200 to 215 to the pin. Lots of streams to either cross, lay up in front of or running down the side of fairways. But all fun challenges to overcome. A couple of the bunkers were in dire need of some sand. The Pro at the golf shop told me after my round that they had plans to get them in shape in the spring. Everything is still dormant so it was pretty tight lies everywhere.
I managed a half dozen pars or so but for not having played much lately I was ok with it. I even managed to play the same ball for the entire round.

Actually sounds like a fun course (long for me) that you’ll figure out quickly.  When spring comes around it’ll show itself!
Have fun, enjoy!!

Tom,

Are you still in Greenville, TN?  I seem to recall something about you moving to NC.  The reason that I ask is because my wife and I went right through Greeneville (or adjacent to it) twice in the last month when we went to Nashville to visit my son, grandson, granddaughter and great grandson in Nashville.

I also played golf a few times at a golf course just east of I-81 and south of Johnson City, TN which was not far from Greeneville.  I don’t remember the name of the course, but it ran along a ridge and you could see I-81 off to the west.  The course was about 20-30 miles south to southwest of Johnson City.

We moved to North Carolina in early December to be closer to family. Just so happens to be just south of Pinehurst 😀

Probably the only course close to I-81 in the area you describe is Graysburg Golf Club. That is a fun course with three nines. Played there plenty of times. If that's not the one I played everything within a 50-mile radius as well. Too bad I didn't know you came through that area sooner. I could have taken you to some nice courses in the area. I had access to a lot of the private ones.

I had access to a lot of the private ones.

THAT’S IT …. Graysburg G. C.; three nines and exactly as you described.  It was about 12 to 16 years ago when I played there and I was playing a bit better back then (between an 8.something and an 11 handicap during those years.  That was before a knee surgery (ACL, MCL and dual meniscus tears), plus injuries to my back and hips.

Sorry to hear about all the injuries. But at least that's in the past.

Oh, I have had other injuries and health issues since then. Although they have been partially responsible for my handicap doubling over the past 15 years or so, I just plow through them, do my rehab and get back out there on the golf courses again ASAP.  I actually think the fact that I have been forced to cut back on my practice and that I have some serious reductions in hip mobility are the main factors in my increased handicap index.

Hey, I’m happy that I was able to play 4 Open Championship courses over the course of 5 days in the UK last summer and play them (actually all but one of them) pretty darned well from 6,200 - 6,450 yard tees. Hopefully, my body and golf game will be up to the challenge when I play 6 more classic championship courses (including the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie, North Berwick, etc) next summer, because they are already booked and my deposit is paid!

We worry about the zombie apocalypse, seems to me we need to be concerned of the YB takeover…..

Hopefully I didn't stir something up by using his profile pic.
