Not a good day today.  The weather turned; cloudy, breezy and temps about 10º colder than yesterday.  My hands never really got warm.  Shot 41/39 for a difficult 80.  Spent the day scrambling around the course saving some pars and… not!  It didn’t help that the round took 4 hours and 20 minutes; our foursome waiting on nearly every shot.

Want spring to get here with warm temps soon!!!

No sympathy from me, my friend. I’m dying to shoot one of those “difficult 80’s” again. 😉

had a Veterans Golf Assoc. tourney scheduled for yesterday, temps at 9Am were in the upper 20s with 10-15 mph winds. It didn't get above the frost line until afternoon., not sure they even played it. That's not golf weather, that's deer hunting stuff right there. Would the course even allow their greens to be trampled at those temps?

Courses near me don’t allow people on the course until after the frost is gone.

Had a really surprisingly great round (for me) that has me doubting everything I've read about club fitting and new technology.

I had my best ball sriking day of the last few YEARS.   I was shaping my irons more or less as desired, and while I missed a few putts early on, I holed a bunch of clutch putts coming in to finish 4 over gross.....

Super happy with the day, less happy to have pointless spent about 2-3k on fitted Irons, woods and putter over the last 3 years!!!!

Great round.

regarding you comments on fitting; clubs cannot be measured by a single shot, round, or possibly even season depending on how many rounds you play a year.   Having the right clubs in your hands will potentially lower your scoring floor and ceiling.  It’s also possible that those clubs were pretty well fit for you.   The results of Fittings are a difficult thing to assess.

Yup I know, I'm being a little tounge in cheek on it.  I was very happy with the fittings at the time, but since then I've also worked on my speed and I think my swingspeed is now back to what it was when I used to play a lot more (and was younger!), so its reasonably likely my flex profile etc will have changed since.... The shafts in the old set were all pretty stiff or certainly stiffer than i was more recently fitted for, so I may go for a tweak with my guy.

Played my local course, which we play 3 times a week. Played a scramble with my wife and another couple. I live outside Phoenix and get most people would like to play all year around, which we do. Everyone thinks Phoenix area courses are always hard and fast. However, we usually play in the morning, and the course is usually soaked and fairly soft. Yesterday, we played in the afternoon. My drives were a good 25 yards longer. We shot 4 under. Fun times. 4+ hour round though. We are used to 3+30 rounds.

Driver: Callaway Epic 9 degree, stiff (set at 10 degrees with the movable weight in the center}

FW: Callaway Epic 3,5, heaven wood w/ regular shaft (driver shaft in 3 wood, 3 wood shaft in 5 wood, 5 wood shaft in heaven wood, all three set at neutral plus 1 degree)

Hybrids: Callaway BB19 4,6,7 (4 set at neutral plus 1 degree and 6 and 7 set at neutral minus 1 degree for gapping purposes)

Irons: Callaway Rogue ST Max 8, 9, PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50,54,58

Ball: Titleist Pro V1, 1X, Vice Pro Plus or anything I find that day and try out for the fun of it (I haven't bought balls with my own money in at least 10 years)

... What is your home course? This year has been the wettest/coldest most locals can remember so even the courses that are usually hard and fast in winter are playing much softer this year.

I played sawgrass a week after the 2021 tourney. What a joy. It helped that they cut the rough so the first cut wasn’t too bad. My caddie Kenny was spot on. No gps needed. It was a real treat. Yes I parted the 17th.
going back in July this year. Nice that they also have military discounts.
also played Beth page black. Another treat with a caddy 3 days after their bar keys tourney a few years  ago. No didn’t play from the black. Did play one up from them though. As we did at sawgrass.

Played Hanover GC for the 1st time. 35 min from my house, Happy to report I found another nice affordable option with a design that suits my game. Riding for $21 was great. 3 w/2 who booked together meant I got my own cart. Pace was moderate at 4 hours on the dot for the round, 11:30 to 3:30. Left plenty of time to assess everything, perhaps overanalyze in places and practice putting on a few green where we saw a backup at the tee ahead of us.

41-43 for +13 84 is good for a 1st time course. Clean front 9 I'm very pleased with. Had to scramble and putt well for that number. How I finished w/ 84 leads me to think I can add this to the "potential break 80" list.

3x 3 putt on the back after none on the front. Last coming on #18 when I hit perfect driver into wind, tested water 180 to clear unsuccessful on the 2nd shot w 4w (big dumb cajones), dropped hit 4th shot short. You'd think I'd account for the wind at that point. Then 3 putt for 8 to finish with 84.

I know how the better players feel on their "what might have been" rounds.

OK then. Rain in the forecast. Went anyway. I mean, in the Phoenix area, 320 days of great golf weather a year so playing in the rain is bupkis if you want. Playing since 1981. I have had 3 albatross on par 5, to many eagles on par 4 to count made insurance money on 2 holes in one. My last goal in golf. Shoot my age. Yup, it happened today. I drink about once a quarter but I am sitting here drinking Drambuie out of my Viking mug. Oooo-rah. Sweet 70. 17 pars and a birdie. And before you say it, there were a couple of lucky shots but about time it swung my way. The rest was pretty golden. I've been swinging everyday out on my mat on the back porch and the swing is pretty damn good. CHEERS!

... Congrats and welcome to the club! I am not sure what "Phoenix area" you live in but this winter has been far from "360 days of great golf weather!" I have only lived here 4 years but this winter has been wetter and colder than the other 3 winters combined. And clear blue skies and sunshine has been the exception where it seemed like every day the last 3 winters. But of course much better than Northern climates so I guess I should just go get some cheese for my whine. 🤪

Thank you. I am over on the west side, out by the 303, and almost didn't go due to the forecast. We seem to have good luck over here on this side as the rain usually works all around us. Couple drops on the 8th tee was it. I have been here for 21 years and this is as wet as I remember it. Been through a couple of days where it was a least the rain of the decade or maybe half century, but nothing like this every 3rd day rain crappola.

... 3 winters ago it didn't rain once in Laveen from November until June. Blue skies and sunshine 95% of the time. It was so dry and the courses were hard and fast but the rest of the course looked like a dusty spaghetti western. This year it is lush and green everywhere and even the "dormant" rough isn't dormant, it's green-ish. But I hear ya about the rain. My last 2 Mays in Chicago were the wettest in history and I probably played 10 rounds max in those 2 months. They couldn't cut the rough and a ball 2" off the fairway had to be stepped on to find out so lots of good drives turned into lost ball so I really shouldn't complain about a little rain every now and then that is helping the reservoirs and aquifers in a desert.

... Too funny that is where I lived. Played Naperbrook and Prairie Bluff as my regulars. May was always a wet month but 2018 - 2020 was insane.

"For the third year in a row, Chicago has set a new record for wettest May, notching 8.3 inches of precipitation to date, with nearly two weeks left in the month to pad the lead over the former record of 8.25 inches in 2019, which, in turn, toppled the record of 8.21 inches set in 2018".

OK then. Rain in the forecast. Went anyway. I mean, in the Phoenix area, 320 days of great golf weather a year so playing in the rain is bupkis if you want. Playing since 1981. I have had 3 albatross on par 5, to many eagles on par 4 and 5 to count made insurance money on 2 holes in one. CHEERS!

Only blowup hole was a par 3 triple on #12, tee to sand to still in sand to long putt to bad lag. I made it 11 holes with 4 pars, 7 bogeys and not many putts made outside 3'.

After the triple I focused big time, hit 4 of 5 fairways and the 170yd par 3 #16 gir. Finished the final 6 holes at +1, with a couple 10-15 ft putts dropping, including a 15' to finish the day at 43-40 for 83, 35 putts, 11 of 14 FW hit, only 7 gir which means my 52° and 56° were on all day.

Another what might've been round, lots of positives to take away. The tee shot on #12 was 4 yards from being on the green, but went straight and drifted left with the wind. A 6 there could've easily been 3 if I didn't aim at the left side but rather targeted the front of the green.
