OK then. Rain in the forecast. Went anyway. I mean, in the Phoenix area, 320 days of great golf weather a year so playing in the rain is bupkis if you want. Playing since 1981. I have had 3 albatross on par 5, to many eagles on par 4 and 5 to count made insurance money on 2 holes in one. My last goal in golf. Shoot my age. Yup, it happened today. I drink about once a quarter but I am sitting here drinking Drambuie out of my Viking mug. Oooo-rah. Sweet 70. 17 pars and a birdie. And before you say it, there were a couple of lucky shots but about time it swung my way. The rest was pretty golden. I've been swinging everyday out on my mat on the back porch and the swing is pretty damn good. CHEERS!

Ooo-Rah and God Bless Marine.  Everyday we are on this side of the dirt is a good one.  Best way to remember and pay respects to our brothers and sisters who aren't with us anymore is to make the most out of every day we are here, and that is a good way to make the best of any day.  Congrats!  Guess you'll just have to get out there tomorrow and do it again LOL!

Way too much good news in here, let me spoil the mood. As @MattWillGolf will surely attest, it was another really cold day down here. A frost delay in the middle of March? Ugh.

After winning 3x and taking 2nd the last 4 weeks in my Tuesday members league, I birdied 2 of the first 6 holes on the Love Course in Barefoot. I actually thought to myself “my days of struggling on a golf course are over!” Hah! Not so fast, Johnny boy.

The wheels came off on the back 9 and I closed my round with a triple bogey 7 on 17 followed by a “I’m picking up, give me a 10 after dunking my second ball in the water on 18. At that point, it didn’t matter whether I finished or not.
I crawled in with my tail between my legs, finishing with a 93.

After a few scotches in the clubhouse, I was numb enough to not care. I’ll chalk today up to one of those days we have that keeps us humble.

On a happier note, I never thought I’d successfully replace my Yes! Tracy putter, but a few months ago I bought a Cameron 5.5… this thing is amazing. I love it. (Wait… I didn’t just jinx myself again, did I?)

You probably did😱. Putt well Grasshopper!

I played the for first time this year yesterday in the Denver, CO area.  I had back surgery 1/11/23 so I could only walk for the first 6 weeks after surgery.  No bending, lifting, twisting for 6 weeks.  Then I started physical therapy 3 weeks ago.  I walked 18 holes and shot an 89.  I played conservative not wanting to hurt the back.  I felt good after a round for the first time in 2 years!  I can’t wait to get out and play again tomorrow!

First real round of the year. Shot a 95 where I was hoping for a 90.  Oh well. A lot of stupid mistakes and triple putts where I felt I could have done better but was rushing myself in the moment. Only 1 birdie on the day, 15th hole Par 4 landed it here off the tee… then proceeded to 2 putt it in. B803CA82-B121-48EB-B561-5BA56888F290.jpeg.f8c72079f1453c130c007a3fa875d5e5.jpeg

Felt like my driver was the only thing working well for me today, putting was terrible and my iron choices were either wayyy long or short. Plenty more to improve on now that we are seeing temps in the 60’s briefly in the afternoons for the foreseeable future! Hoping to come back and play the other 18 holes here at Lyman’s next Tuesday

Is this Lyman Orchard in Middlefield? I worked in Meriden for about 8 years and played all the courses in that area.  Timberlin, Indian Springs, Hunter, Stanley and some others.

Yes it is.  My first time playing here, I just moved within about 15 minutes of here last year.  I mostly played on the shoreline previously but there are so many good courses within a 30 minute drive now for me.  Did you have a favorite course?

Lyman Orchard was one of the nicer ones. My company golf league played at Hunter Golf Club. I also liked Tradition but that was up near the airport in Windsor. I lived out near New London and commuted to Meriden. I'm more familiar with the courses out East.

A lot of good choices in CT.  My favorite was Black Hall in Old Lyme.

It’s Private but I think they’ve been doing some outside stuff.
I was on the member wait list back around 2010 but removed my name when we knew we were moving to FL.

Shame, great track.  Tough and well maintained.  Golf Club only, no pool, tennis and minimal amenities to keep costs reasonable and course in top shape.

Back at you.

I hope to match you in shooting your age fairly soon! I missed it by three strokes two weeks ago (it would be two strokes away if I shot the same score later this week when I turn 74).

Did I read it correctly that you shot 70 in matching or beating your age?  The only time I have broken 70 were in two rounds on shorter courses (one was a par-69 18-hole course and I was only 42 years old at the time), and when I shot my 67 several years ago the course had four temporary tees and one temporary green, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway … and I think I was only 65 or 66 at the time.

The only way that I have shot my age was when I shot 32 and 34 on two consecutive Monday night rounds in my 9-hole league.

Only blowup hole was a par 3 triple on #12, tee to sand to still in sand to long putt to bad lag. I made it 11 holes with 4 pars, 7 bogeys and not many putts made outside 3'.

After the triple I focused big time, hit 4 of 5 fairways and the 170yd par 3 #16 gir. Finished the final 6 holes at +1, with a couple 10-15 ft putts dropping, including a 15' to finish the day at 43-40 for 83, 35 putts, 11 of 14 FW hit, only 7 gir which means my 52° and 56° were on all day.

Another what might've been round, lots of positives to take away. The tee shot on #12 was 4 yards from being on the green, but went straight and drifted left with the wind. A 6 there could've easily been 3 if I didn't aim at the left side but rather targeted the front of the green.

@funkyjudge my last trip to that direction was Mountain View, loved that setup as well. I don't get many undulations like that around the flat area by the shore. I was inconsistent but managed in the 80s, 89 maybe.

I’ve been playing for the Mountain View senior team for 8 years, and we have won 4 state championships and finished as runners-up twice in that time.

The last tournament I played in at Mercer Oaks East, I eagled hole #6 for a net 1 on that hole, then birdied #15 for a net 2. We were playing net better ball of partners, and my team won the tournament by 4 or 5 strokes.

That was my take, great home you got there, I would cut down a couple trees if I had say

If you are talking about Mountain View, a tornado took down about 20-30 trees there a couple years ago. Still, there are more than a few trees between holes 14 and 15 that I would love to see gone!

First outdoor 9 hole round (any round) since November 12th last day before closedown of last course open in WNY, March 22 had some great shots, a couple good holes and only 1 lost ball.  I could gloat that I shot below my age but a 60 for 9 holes isn't anything to cheer about, maybe I shouldn't even mention it 🤔

All kidding aside, rough start to 2023 but it was golf, it was fabulous to be on course, and joined 3 other kind hearted men for a most respectful and enjoyable round.  Game is definitely ON and destined for better rounds to come ⛳

53F, slow greens, persistent westerly winds, complete overcast, will definitely take this over every day of the year before this so far.  Lots of tree damage on the course from the heavy snow storms that rolled through about every 3 weeks since Thanksgiving.

Any round of golf is a great round. I'm glad you were able to play your first of many rounds today and it sounds like you had a fun time on the course.

I found the scorecard from 3/6 at Mountain View I bogeyed #6, noted 6i was not enough club for my approach hit a high lofted hybrid next time. #7 was my worst hole, I flirted with the left treeline got away with it for the drive, not the 4W.

#15 my 235 yard drive was the best of the day, paid it off with 5h in to the middle and a lag for par. #13-16 was my best stretch, +1 on those 4, -2 net.

If you played both #13 and #14 well, that is a major accomplishment!  13 always seems to play longer than the posted yardage, and 14 is feast or famine for me (usually famine). That hole requires a draw with a fairway wood off the tee …. but not too much of a draw, and certainly not a pull or a hook into the woods. Any shot more than 175-180 yards down the middle will end up in the right rough or even worse down the hill toward the 2nd hole and will be totally blocked by the dense woods to the right of the fairway.

It’s true that holes 15 and 16 offer the opportunity to score well, and you need to take advantage of that opportunity because 17 can be absolutely brutal (another hole where everything rolls severely to the right side and usually into the trees.

Yup, #13 I took driver into a crosswind from 205yd. Ended up on the back fringe, almost made the 25' birdie. #14 driver 4w 7i all good strikes 7i to a sand trap, but a good out good lag for bogey. Par par on 15-16. 16 played at a perfect 7i for me that day.
