How'd you play?

Winter seems to have drawn to a close up here, and @Kieran shot me a message around noon yesterday asking if I wanted to play 9 holes after work. I had a few bad holes, but ended up beating him 2 Up in matchplay.

Gonna need some time on the range because my driving was atrocious, but I felt like I couldn't make a bad swing with my irons. Not a feeling I'm used to this early in the season - the quest for a single digit handicap is on!

+17 46-42 at par 71 Concordia GC. Hit 11/14 FW but my approaches were off a hair all day. Hit a few greens on 10-16 but 2x 3 putt and another birdie that lipped out. No birdies on the day. 5 pars, 9 bogeys, 4 doubles. 36 putts shows why that's not the best stat. I putted much worse than that number, but I hit 3 wedges to tap in distance.

Well, being 1400 miles south of Michigan, and having an afternoon to myself, I decided to find a local course, rented clubs and played 9 holes.

The course is advertised as "The Most Beautiful Nine Hole Golf Course in Florida" according to their website and literature, but if this truly would be the best Florida has to offer for 9 hole courses, it must be the only one.  

Poor conditions, as some of the pictures will show, and it is a par 32, with 3 par 4's, 1 par 5, and 5 par 3's.

Did not do as bad as I could have, and actually played fairly well from the 3rd hole until the 9th. Shot a 37 with 14 putts.

First picture with the birds is a par 3, and YES that is the green that they are on. Hole number 8.

Last pictures are the tee area on hole 9. Seemed like there was a nature provided audience for the tee shot.

Back home on Sunday, this trip was an expedition for work, so not much time for play or pleasure.

Hopefully spring weather will arrive soon in Michigan, and I can continue to get out as often as I can.

Glad you were able to get out and enjoy some fun in the sun, Robert. It kind of reminds me of a goat track par 3 course that used to be around here with greener grass. At least you had some good company out there with you. Hopefully spring will hit y'all soon up in Michigan, I know after a Florida trip you've got to be itching for warmer weather.

I don’t think that’s the most beautiful course in Florida, Fake News!

Last Friday we ditched the office at about 2pm and decided to play at Ford's Colony, Black Heath Course in Williamsburg Virginia.  We got a twilight rate since it was after 2pm.  The weather was about 75 degrees with a nice breeze, great day for golf.  We go right out to tee box #1, no warm-up, tried to stretch a little and get a few practice swings in before teeing off.  None of that helped.  I pulled out driver and topped the first ball, it rolled about 50 yards and just made it past the ladies tees.  That kind of set the tone for the rest of the round.  Between the foursome, we had one par hole and the rest was just frustration.  But no matter how frustrating that round was, we still had a great time just playing golf.

Next round is Saturday probably at Royal New Kent Golf Club or Viniterra Golf Club.

Friday Bacon Boyz and ball in the air @ 7:30.  2nd hole attacked by a couple Sandhill Cranes who thought we were after their grubs!!  We convinced them we weren’t and got out of that hole.  Tried the PXG 2021 with a little bit stiffer shaft and hit it well.  Similar length of the 3031 but not as much height.  We didn’t keep score just playing for birdies, the winner had 2 and wasn’t me.  Did have 1 nice bird but that was all.  7 wood got some work this morning, decent height and distance but a bit too much fade, need to work on that.

Myself and a buddy of mine are going out to Viniterra on Sunday. Played like utter dog crap last time I was out there, so I'm looking forward to a little redemption Sunday.

I had thought of bringing 10 clubs to the par 60, but remembered they do weekend pricing on Friday afternoon twilight would cost too much to walk to justify. 

There's another Monmouth County executive a little further that charges less for better conditions, so I ended up at Pine Brook par 61. Brought the full set since I'm less familiar.

Started on #10. Played fantastic until I ran into 2 people and had to wait for them both to card 8s on the par 3 15th playing from 104y. Was even par at that time, -2 net through 5 holes. I was pretty sure they skipped around the course because I did not see them on the 14th which was only 120y.

15th I skulled a 9i over trying to keep a 80% effort low out of the wind. Bad SW went too far down a slope and a bad lag from 25' led to double. Drove into trees and had to layup resulting in bogey the next hole. Finished 17-18 birdie-bogey to card +3 33 on the back 9 (played 1st).

Bogeyed 1-3 with a mix bag of old errors I drudged up. Hole 4 a drive to 80y away went down as maximum score 2x par +1 for nine. NINER, copy? Over. I managed a bogey with the 2nd ball I dropped in the fairway 80y away, but this scorecard I was keeping strict on the 1st ball played being scored, then dropping 2nd ball for practice but not counting.  

Bogey-par-bogey-bogey-par wasn't a bad finish, couldn't get a putt to fall though some were close. 42-33 for 75 +14. Gave up 7 of those strokes on 2 holes. This ties my previous best score here

Tomorrow is opening day at Colonial Terrace, Ocean Twp. Muni course behind the Asbury Circle where rt. 66 meets rt. 35. Cool par 35. Short yardage, tight FWs, small greens. Perfect place to work on everything I've been trying to improve.

I booked 1:56pm riding and also the last tee time of the day 4:56 walking. I've played here in under 2 hours up to 2 1/2, never 3 hours so timing should work. Lots of good sandwich places around there to get something in between times, hopefully.

Scores here last season ranged from 41 to 56, it'll be interesting to see which of my games show up.

Thank you for the tip, but unfortunately this trip was more of a work expedition and today will be wrapping up and getting ready to fly out tomorrow morning.

I do try to get to Florida on occasion for vacation, but this was the first time actually being able to golf.

Man, it's been a busy winter! I'm glad to finally be on the start of the season, and back to the forum as well!

Been working on the swing in the ole garage over the winter, and I finally got out for my first outdoor round this past weekend. It's a short executive type course, and I wasn't sure what my game would be like.

Unsurprisingly, around the green was super rusty. Putting is usually a strength, but it was absolutely brutal haha. Hit good lines, but awful speed.

Full swing had a couple really bright spots, but a couple non-committal swings sorta stuck between my old swing and the changes I've been trying to implement over the winter.

Even though my score was real ugly, I'm actually pretty satisfied with how it went. I'm a confident putter so I know that'll come back, and I'm encouraged with the swing progress. Still have some things to get ingrained, but really looking forward to the next round tomorrow!

This game…

for the life of me I just cannot quit making stupid decisions to tweak my swing. I think the worst ones are the quick success ones, but then they start going south the quickest. Right now I’m on the hard to begin, but starting to see some successes here and there. 
its not a rocket scientist move. It’s just getting the hands closer, with a shorter backswing, etc… blah blah blah. no need for a complex breakdown, because it will probably change in another week or two.

can’t wait for Mondays round…

It’s been a long wet and cold winter here in SoCal as well, and my game has reflected the conditions. Basically, we are experiencing what much of the country deals with year in and year out. I mean it’s always in the low 40’s at tee time, and I’ve got long insulated pants on, a tee shirt, a cold gear long sleeve shirt under my golf shirt.then a sweatshirt, with a puffy vest on. A hat, with a woolen beanie on top, covering my ears.

and I wonder why I can’t swing well…. Plus it’s always soaking wet from the endless rains (thank goodness), so we get no roll and second shots are a few longer irons or fairway woods away.  
weather forecasts are clear and significantly warmer for the near future though, so thank goodness for that.

the positive side is that our 20 year drought has finally broken, and my local fishing lake has risen 50 feet this year, and all the groundwater has been restored. The fishing sucks due to this, but it will eventually return in a big way, so all is good

... Yup, definitely a silver lining to the rain clouds as our aquifers are also filling up and our reservoirs are over flowing. There is a "river" called the Salt River that runs through Phoenix and it has always been just a barren, arid rocky wash the 4 years I have been here and I always found it kinda funny it is called a "river". River of rocks maybe? But lo and behold it is an actual river right now with water running like any other river. It will be interesting to see how long it stays wet.

... That said, we seemed to have turned a corner last week and the fairways are running hard and fast ... finally! At age 70 I reached every par 5 in two last round. 515, 477, 499 and 534. Of all the problems in life, a colder wet winter in a desert isn't even on the list so just being thankful and looking forward to Spring and Summer.

We all fall for it.   swing is a tad bit off,  you see a video or read a tip and something makes you try it....results seem to improve the swing.   Find another tip,  make a tweak, seems to work.    Find another tip,  game totally collapses.

Another strong showing combined with an unfortunate need to leave the course early.

39 front (with a double) and 1 over through 12 on the back before I had to leave.  (Net Par would put at 81) but I felt like I might have broken through if I'd continued   The joys of parenthood.   

Driver was decent, putting was solid (highlight was draining a 25 footer for birdie), short game was solid, I made great contact with my irons again (who knew a pressure plate was my own personal panacea), and a I made good decisions.   I never let myself convince myself to take a shot that I wasn't confident I could pull off repeatedly (I think Anika said something like this?).  That relegated my 2 & 3 hybrids to taking chunks out of yardage on par 5s but not for hitting the green, long irons were used primarily for putting me in position or in some cases going for the green, and surprise surprise I did most of my scoring with scoring clubs.  I leaned heavily on getting to the green or just off in regulation if I had the opportunity (and not damaging myself with the leave) and/or leaving myself with a high percentage fairway shot into the green inside 130 if I wasn't going to make it in regulation.   

It was a fun low key day where I kept my nerves calm and kept focused.  I knew exactly what my score was the whole time but it was never in the front of my mind.  I was mellow enough that even knowing where I was I wasn't frustrated when I had to pack it in.  Just kind of oh well'd it, said goodbye to my playing partners and walked back to the car.  Maybe Tuesday at Rustic will be the breakthrough.   Playing with a buddy I haven't seen in six months so its going to be fun no matter what.

 Shot a 43/48/91 gross, 89 net today. Not the worst round, but still plenty of room for improvement. Driving continued to be the best part of my game, but chipping and putting were much improved over last week. Irons really weren't that bad, but I hit a few shanks for a couple of holes which resulted in a total of 4 penalty strokes.  It's an easy fix and I was able to make the proper adjustments mid-round, but man that hurts! Might just have to schedule a lesson sometime soon to make sure there isn't something more going on, but I feel pretty good about the swing right now. Highlights today were two birdies. The first on the Par 5 2nd hole and the second on the Par 3 15th (stuck it to 3-4ft!).

Mission accomplished and home before the national weather service warnings. Now 2 hours later I hear gale force winds whipping potential tornado conditions outside.

1st time at this par 35 since November 11th shot the low end of my range from last season, 41 from the blues tees ,43 from the white tees with a double and triple. 

So 14/18 very respectable holes. 4 very bad holes.

Ugh. Not a good day. My league had a travel day due to inability to get 52 tee times at home today (peak season down here now) and we played Eagle Nest, a very nice layout that hasn’t been kept up well at all. They didn’t overseen, so the fairways were a disaster, and the greens were, to be kind… inconsistent.

There was a huge mixup by the starter that i don’t want to get into, but let’s just say I was fuming when I had to join a 4some when they were already on the 1st green, and after arguing with them while they drove me there, was told the best they could do was let me play the 1st hole when I completed my round. I let that get in my head, and actually 3 putted the second (my first) hole from 3 feet.

It was downhill from there, as I was unable to figure out the greens all day. Nobody really scored well on a lousy course with winds gusting up to 20mph as net 76 won low net in the A flight.Sadly I was nowhere near that, shooting a 92 net 82 and finishing out of the money. Just an annoying day all around that only made me appreciate the club where we live and play even more than I normally do.

We did get a good laugh when the superintendent there told us their plan is to get the course to have a Pinehurst type look, with sandy areas bordering the fairways. This course has been “working on improvements” for about 4 years now, with little progress, so it was pretty funny when one of our guys told him “there’s no way you’ll live long enough to be around to see that happen.”

I didn't get any sleep last night. Tossing and turning even the dog didn't get much sleep. He was crying to go out at 3:00 in the morning. Took him out and went back to bed and finally fell asleep. That didn't deter my normal wake up for golf at 7:15 and on the course by 8:00. Golf, well I'll call it that anyway was terrible. Probably the worst front 9 I have shot in years. All bogies and a double thrown in for good measure. I was hitting the 7, 8, and 9 iron the same distance and all low ball flights. I got it figured out after I made the turn. I wasn't hitting down on the back of the ball and was kind of picking the ball off the turf and standing up. The greens were slow as all get out and still haven't fully healed from aeration. There was no chance at saving a par with a one putt. 

The back 9 was a different story and is even harder than the front. So many dog legs that force you to lay up to an opening and then you still have 200 yards into the green. Totally not the type of golf I'm used to. But I had one bogie and one birdie on the back. Now that I found some rhythm, I continued on to play the front again. Just because I was pissed at my play. My play continued to go well with a bird on the first hole and then parred a few more before I realized I had just walked 22 holes and was heading further away from the comfort of my car.  I abandoned ship to give the feet a rest. Pretty tired now and of course the wife wants to do yard work and power washing outdoor furniture. At least I'll sleep well later on. I'll put the golf on TV and it will be lights out.

Uggggg….my putting is awful right now

One over my handicap, but I should be doing so much better than this right now. I’m striking the ball really well. I’m starting to do drills where I’m deliberately hitting draws and fades for the first time in my life. My driver is actually working pretty well and I’m starting to find my touch with my new chipping technique…and then I 3 putt 8 times and missed at least a couple of putts from 6ft that ended up as doubles that should have been singles.
