How'd you play?

Got out this weekend and got 18 holes in.  40/41 for the round and not exactly sure how to feel about it.  Feel like I am pulling literally everything with the irons I got at the end of last season and just wondering if I'm swinging it way differently than I was during that fitting (clubs are between 2* and 3* upright).

But wedges were clicking and I am absolutely loving the new Spider GTX putter, so score wasn't as bad as I may have felt I played.

Biggest complaint was the 6 hour round we played.  That's just public golf in NYC I guess, and I need to work on my mental game haha

Tied for my best round ever (scored both in the last 2 weekends!) and I am really feeling like I can do no wrong. Had a couple blowup holes that I recovered for double-bogeys. It's not very often that I don't score a triple or worse, but my greenside control has improved a little and has drastically improved my scoring. Also, putting is getting better while staying under a 2 putt average which is all I am looking for at the moment. It snowed on Saturday (04/22) about 3" but luckily my tee time was the following day at 3pm and the weather was sunny and 60 all day, so there was not even a drop of snow around the course AND the fairways weren't all muddy! My goal is to get below a 10hcp so I'm going to continue to push scoring and playing smart as I work towards that goal.

Played 9 holes with my father in law yesterday. Finally beautiful weather and I shot a sloppy 42. Was striking the ball well, but my short game let me down. Feeling confident since that will come around with more reps. Glad that golf season is finally back!

Used my new “Freddy Couples” swing today, and ended up at 79, not bad considering two dumb doubles. Lots of clean hits with slightly better distance. Also a slight baby draw on the well hit balls.

the swing consists of just picking up your arms then a little turn at the top, and then just letting it fall down into the ball. I’m sure it doesn’t resemble Freddy to anyone watching, but it feels good in my head…

Also, this happened on 11 hitting out of thick rough. Mizuno has already been contacted.

... I love this! Finding things in others swings and copying it is a great way to improve and find out more about your own swing. Rarely (if ever) do we actually look like who we are trying to copy, but having a visual in our heads can lead to a better swing. I love thinking about Larry Mize and Amy Yang's syrupy swings when my timing gets a little out of whack.

... When I fist started playing I tried to copy Freddie's swing. I would take video of my swing and try to get to his positions. After a couple years (pun intended) I gave up and decided to just swing naturally. And now here is the lesson and irony. Copying him completely, my swing really never looked like Freddie but when I stopped and just started doing what came naturally it looked more like Freddie. That was when I learned the difference between what we are doing and what we think we are doing and it had a profound effect on my teaching. Most will never be able to change their natural tendencies but they can improve but emulating others. Watching Matsuyama and trying to copy his pause won't work for 99% of anyone attempting to do so but it can improve your transition if it is too quick. So thinking "Pause like Matsuyama" may help tremendously even if you are the only one thinking you look anything like him! 🤪

Today was rough. After a day where I felt I controlled everything I hit at the driving range, today on course every shot went an unintended direction to a varying degree. Played some good holes, but lost a lot of balls en route to 44-53 for 97 on par 70.

Worst I've played in a long time. 2 + hour pace the front 9, 1 hr 15 minutes the 2nd after the course cleared out. Never got a rhythm.

I had a weird amount of fun with it, but I guarantee not everyone did.  I witnessed the first 6 putt I've ever seen in my life from one of my playing partners.  It was brutal.

OK; here's a strange one that I have never experienced before, and I have been playing golf for 38 years and playing in golf leagues for almost that long.  Tonight, in one of my 9-hole leagues, I shot 35 (even par) with two birdies and an eagle (pasr-5 hole; driver, 8-iron and 18 foot putt). I also had two double bogeys.  I was playing against a 12-handicap (for 9 holes), who shot 41, and I got SMOKED.  Not only did I lose my match, all but one member of my team got beaten in similar fashion.  Only one golfer on my team shot higher than 40 (he had a 41), yet 5 of our 6 members lost their matches.  Only my #6 player, who has a 12 handicap and shot 40 for a net 28, won any points.  I have never seen almost an entire team shoot in the low to mid 30s as our opponents did tonight (with the exception of my 12-handicap opponent).  The majority of these guys are good golfers with 3 to 7 handicaps, but having every one of them shoot in the low to mid 30s was what I would call exceptional (or, more appropriately, UNBELIEVABLE!)

Cold afternoon with rain threatening found partner and me at the first tee and nobody in front of us and until we were done with the front 9 nobody behind us either.  We decided to push on for the back 9 seeing we were only 1hr 34 min into the golf day and we had yet to play 18 this year after one week of play.  Play continued at a lively pace but we did not in any way rush finishing in sunshine at 3hr 23min.  Front 9 was at times frustrating with 2 triples, 3 doubles, and 5 singles for 51 but the back 9 had 3 doubles, 4 singles and 2 pars for 45.  Looks like golf is going to start out as well as it ended 6 months ago.

16th approach and green Elma Meadows GC, Elma NY 4/24/2023 6:58PM

Weather played a role 47F at tee time with wind blowing a train of rain clouds past mostly to the north and temp dropped over the 4 hours to 39F and on the 10th green what was first rain soon became ice drops bouncing off the short grass.  Walking was what kept us warm and only the walk back to vehicles after 18 felt chilly.

That's interesting feedback. Love my ER5 but kinda been eyeing the banners for this year's LAB test 🤔 .. maybe I'll go back and re-read last year's reviews!

Yeah I want to do an in-person fitting to compare them both. I definitely prefer the feel of the ER5 off the face, but the tech in the LAB seems to help me. Sometimes though, I wish the DF 2.1 was smaller, especially if you're against the fringe, it doesn't fit between the ball lol. LAB is great you should definitely apply and say a few extra prayers in hopes that you get picked

Nothing like using a divot repair tool to make a small hole for your tee because the ground is frozen. Done that a few times 😂

Couldn't really even use iron or wedge shots to the green because it would bounce like it hit the cart path. Had to use ye olde punchy shot. 😂

Played my 1st ever match play on Friday. My partner is a solid 7HC so I have a good one!

We worked very well together - I won 1st, Will won 2nd, me the 3rd. We were 4 up after 5 💪

Our opponents rallied a bit but we ended up winning 6 & 5. I won the 13th with a perfect drive over the trees, 50° to 8' and rolled in the birdie (with a shot).

Onto the next round 🙂

a couple of golftec lessons in to straighten some things out and get more consistent and I hit 14/18 greens and ended up with a 77.

the aeration holes made putting quite a challenge but off to a good start and pleased with the changes so far.

Next lesson on Thursday.

... I haven't heard about any flooding in PA but that sounds like a LOT of sand bags. 🤪

Absolutely, Sam!  This is why I used the word “UNBELIEVABLE”.  There are at least 4 new golfers on this team that we played, and nobody seems to know anything about the new guys. This same team has finished dead last each of the last three years, and they virtually totally retooled for the 2023 season.  The biggest problem is that nobody on this team is in the GHIN System, unlike my team, where everyone has a USGA Handicap Index.

BTW, I was fitted for a Makefield Putter last week, and the fitter, who is also a PGA Professional and former Tour golfer (and not on a small low-level tour like I play on) gave me a free putting lesson as part of the fitting process. Although I don’t have my new custom-fit Makefield putter yet, as it is still being built, I incorporated the pointers that Michael Brown, the Makefield Putters fitter and co-founder, gave me. I putted “lights out” in my league last night (13 putts for 9 holes, with two lip-outs that could easily have fallen).

I can’t wait to pick up my new Makefield putter tomorrow and put it into play when I get to Myrtle Beach on Thursday!

Played one of my better rounds this weekend at a tournament. Felt like every time I took a club out it was the right one. Chipping and Putting steady. Drove the ball great all day, except 2 holes on the back 9 back to back lazy swings that cost me doubles, but then the last 2 holes back to normal and was able to par out.

The more confident you are on your short game the less stress you have on your long game, I think it makes you swing more freely because you feel its not an issue where it may end up.
For me that's why I practice chipping and putting 95% of the time.

I want to see if I can keep this consistency going until the of the year.
