How'd you play?

I played yesterday evening with my wife and son at our Florida course- she's a beginner (54.0 index) and he's never played a serious round but wanted to come out.

Despite having double coaching duties and playing myself- it was a great time! It's fun for me to see them finally starting to enjoy golf (I've been inviting them for 20 years!)

Just the fact that I get to share the game with them was enough to keep me happy- despite my mediocre playing.

Such a gorgeous day for a morning 9. Felt like I had the course to myself. Bogey on the opening hole. But for the most part the round was steady. The driver was behaving but it took a couple of holes to find the fairway. Four out of the 7 drivable holes found the fairway. I wont count the 6th hole as my only slice of the day found the left side 3rd fairway, I’ve never been on the left side of the 3rd fairway when I play the 3rd hole. My iron play continues to give me grief. My chipping with my 58° wedge as great except on 9 when I thinned it across the green. Putting was absolutely solid. Zero 3 putts and three 1 putts. Not sure on counting putts if putting from the fringe as 2 of the three 1 putts were after fringe “putts”. Was in the sand once. It was one of the rebuilt bunkers on the 2nd hole. Very very soft fluffy sand. It was quite the change from the very firm traps I’ve gotten used to. But I did get out of a fried egg uphill lie in a single shot, to the fringe. So I’d call that a win.

A breakthrough is coming soon, I can feel it. Shot 80 in the Sunday skins, winning three out of the 5 of them for 21 bucks. Mind you, this was an 80 with a stretch of double-par-triple on 14, 15 and surprise surprise... 16. Also had at least 5 legit birdie chances that I didn't capitalize on and two that I gave a hell of a run to. Just gotta get the big ones out of the way and take better chance of when I'm in position and we're back in business soon.

Not today but Sunday morning.. Wife said to go as she hurt her back.. So go i did.. get to the course cool overcast light breeze.. Starter tells me go off the back there is no-one out there  and I'll be able to play quicker, and he'll fit me in when i come around.. perfect.. complete the 1st 9 ( the back) in 1 hour... shooting a 40, nice.. wind has picked up.. play the front 9 with a twosome.. shoot a 42. for a 82. Played well got done in 2:45min.. what a great way to start my day.. LOL

I know, right? If they had just listened to me, it would have played out perfectly instead of me having to knock one over trees to approach the green.

I worked some OT yesterday but afterwards I met up with Owen to play at River Heights.  He had already played a round with his friends and was actually the person who decided to book for us to play as well.  After we checked in we ran into an older friend who works with us, Randy, and he decided to join us, too.  Really windy day with sustained winds over 20 mph but otherwise beautiful.

Hole one:  Pulled my driver left into the treeline separating 1 and 18; about 100 yards out.  Pulled out my 21° hybrid and hit it clean.  Low out of the trees then it took a left turn at the dogleg and ended up just short and left of the green about 220 yards away.  Just an insane shot!  Chipped on, two putt; bogey.

Hole two:  Because of the wind I decided to put the driver away and hit 3 wood the rest of the way.  240 yard tee shot cutting the dogleg and ending up just before the river that separates the green.  Pulled out my 9 iron and hit great.  Too great, as it was over the green by about 20 yards.  Best iron strike I've had in months. Chipped back on, two putt; bogey.

Hole three:  Long par five.  3 wood into the wind about 180 yards, then another 3 wood about 205 just in front and to the left of the waste area before the green.  9 iron again, this time into the wind for 135 onto the green.  Best iron strike I've had in minutes, lol.  Two putt, par.

Hole four:  Par three about 170 into the wind.  Pulled hybrid and managed to draw it right onto the green; first time I've hit the green in several rounds.  Three putt (sigh) bogey.

Hole five:  Hit 3 wood about 225 to clear the river then hit 7 iron 145 to go just off the back of the green.  Three irons in a row that I've actually hit well!  Then sadly four putts to double bogey.

Hole six:  3 wood about 220 to clear the waste area and wound up just off the fairway on the right side.  Pulled the hybrid and hit it great, hugging the line separating the rough and the fairway.  I lost track as it came down but it must have hit and run forever because we found it on the green about six feet from the hole for my first green in two.  Drained the putt for my first eagle!!!

Hole seven:  Short par three, I managed to chunk my 9 iron twenty yards, then hit 9 again over the green.  Then I duffed my chip, chipped again, and three putted for a quad bogey.  Oof, lol.

Hole eight:  Absolutely clobbered my 3 wood 275 yards, then mishit my wedge to the right of a big uphill undulating green.  Three putts, bogey.

Hole nine:  3 wood 225, PW 125 to just over the green.  Duffed the chip, chipped again to almost hole it, dropped the putt for bogey.

Thats a +9 45 for those keeping score at home.  Both Owen and Randy were playing terrible and it was getting a little late, so we decided to just scramble on the back and skipped a few holes.  It was clear that Randy especially was not having a good time, but he was more excited about the eagle than I was.  He was the guy that got us into the game last year and he's been really excited to watch us progress over time.  I'm thrilled to death that he got to be there to witness.

That's a great round and it's wonderful to see how your game is progressing! Congratulations on getting your first eagle, that's awesome!

Another break in the run of cool, wet weather today and tomorrow, so I drove the 70 miles to Cottonwood Hill GC in Bozeman.  Paired up with a nice young kid attending MSU and we both played the green tees (6318). It had rained pretty heavy the previous two days and the course was wet but not sloppy at all.  Lots of heavy, dark cloud cover and rain in the distance, but winds were light and it stayed clear of us.  44/41 with only one DB and never having made a single putt outside 8 ft.   Several great chances for birdie but the ER5v and I just could not get it done.  It felt like one of those rounds that could have easily been a sub 80.

I did get to test out the Tsi2 3w. I took my first swing with it (I mean literally) on #1, par 5 with 242 yards in.  I took the G400 with me in the truck but upon arriving decided to live or die with the Titleist.  I need to get some time on the range with the SC200 and see for sure, but it was pretty easy to get airborne and early indication is that it's longer by maybe 7-10 yards.  It definitely has a different feel and sound.  Time will tell but, thus far, my gamble looks like it will pay off.

Lush, green, and damp... not great for roll out but sure nice looking.

I played last Sunday and was very disappointed in my game.  My drives were all over the place.  Fortunately for the most part my irons were behaving themselves. Sometimes I wonder why I keep torturing myself  lol

See there, you're starting to get that "course management" thing.  Some of my most memorable holes have been played from two, even three fairways .

Course management was the name of the game Sunday. I couldn't hit a fairway (at least the right one) and had some fun getting creative trying to get back on course.

Played South Park GC in South Buffalo, NY this afternoon with 3 great partners I had never met before, amazing how golf often does that.  Two of them were regulars up at Delaware Park GC, still part of the Olmstead Conservatory and on my season pass, and they were regular partners and most encouraging and had a positive influence on my game.

The par 3 4th hole has South Park lake for a fairway so it is tee box and green separated by some 150 yards.  They suggested driver (which is new to me this year) I think more as an exaggeration to get me to not use the shorter distance of the other tee box, so I took their encouragement and landed right of the green for a short chip on and 2 putt bogie, definitely confidence building.  Par on the par 4 5th hole and on the 6th hole which starts off with a dogleg fairway around the other end of South Park lake, they were all hitting over the lake made daunting by high vegetation and Bullrushes, I honestly was trying to just clip the edge of that hazard but pulled the shot and connected clean for a long ball that we found middle of the fairway at the white 150yd marker, a 210yd drive that marks my new longest drive (since February 1st).

The significance is previously the longest drive had been 186yds over a straight fairway.  For my older guy low speed swing it was a total surprise when my app tracking showed 210yds.  48 for today

Played a muni course that I've not previously played (Cortez Golf Club in Hot Springs Village).  Did well on the front side with a 39 after starting off with 4 bogeys.  On the back, lost my drive to the right somewhere down a ravine on #10 ... took a double there.  Hit another ball OB when it hit the cart path and ended up with another double.  The backside played much tougher with tight fairways and different elevations.  Ended up shooting bogey golf 44 on the back to card an 83.  Biggest problem for me other than the lost ball and OB was putting on greens that were slow.  I couldn't seem to find my pace and missed a lot of breaking putts.  We were also waiting on every shot on the back, which didn't help.  This was part of our "Last Monday Group" where we play a different course in the Village on the last Monday of the month (Tues this month because of Memorial Day).  The format is always 3 best net for team skins.  Our team won 2 skins, which surprised me because we seemed to struggle getting 3 decent net scores each hole.
