How'd you play?

Beautiful day today in mid MI. Low 70's, lots of sun and gentle breezes. We've had 3 days of no rain so things are starting to dry up. Only spotted 3 'casual water"  spots. I missed them all.😀 Shot 37 for my normal 9. Nice walk for sure. Only hit 4 GIR but 4 others were all within 2 feet or less so striking was doing OK. Went back to using the lines on my ball for putting. Putted much better today. Only 14. The 2 birdies I made helped for sure. Wanted practice with my 3 wood off the deck so put the driver away for this round. Still need to practice or keep practicing. Just not getting much height. Onward and upward ho.

Jekyll and Hyde round: 51(+15) & 39(+5) for 90(+20).

Hit every possible OB on the front-9, including a quadruple bogey on the par 3 second hole and a few 3-putts to add to the pain. I literally had nothing going on for me. I was +14 after 6 holes with 4 lost balls. I must admit that I considered giving up for the day and leaving the course at some point, which is something that I have never done, but I'm glad I didn't.

Turned it around on the 7th hole. Shot +6 on the next 12 holes with a single lost ball on the 18th hole (but had to punch-out twice).

Had an eagle chance on the 8th hole: I was chipping short-sided roughly 4-5 yds from the pin and semi-bladed the chip and followed with a 3-putt... Yup...

I then had 5 birdie putts of less than 6-7' and missed 4 of those 😅. One of those chances was a downhill 6-footer on a par 3 with an absolutely brutal green. I barely touched the ball and it rolled out of the green all the way down the fairway. Came back up with a LW + 2 putts for a double bogey following a 6' birdie chance... Ouch.

Once again, the Caley 01CB irons were extremely pleasant to hit and following my run of peppering flagsticks for good birdie chances, I must say that they are starting to grow on me.

Learned my lesson today in my round. Wasn't able to hit range balls with a new profile driver shaft prior to the round. (FWIW, range time afterwards may make this usable). Made for an interesting 48. The Caley had its moments today. Duffed my opening tee shot. yada. On a long dog leg I normally pull driver I hit the DI and hooked it sorta around the corner. Still had a 6i and and just left the face a little open. Interesting putting day. The SG won't show it but I putted somewhat decent. Had to adjust to the faster greens again, and the first two holes had downhill breaking putts that I judged poorly. The long follow ups on those holes were legit lip outs, so almost escaped with Dbl bogey and bogey respectively. On the 2nd par 5, i had a 360 lip out for bogey from 18'.

Saw a few of your posts in the various threads that we commonly follow. Are you trying the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI 60X/70X by any chance (that's the shaft I game that's why it struck me when I remember reading about it)?

If so, what are your expectations/objectives of this shaft and what do you dislike about the Fujikura Ventus Black 6X?

TL;DR: 60x, looking for matched feel in my set.

Its the 60x. I am looking for a shaft that is less taxing on me when I don't have my swing. The Ventus black is great when I am fully warm and the swing is good. I also am just testing more of a blue profile to match the rest of my set. My woods are all blueboard shafts and I can hit them very well. With the ventus, I would hit one or two good drives and then either hard pull or wipey fade it. Also looking for something I can reliably trust on carry and not depend on roll out. I have hit some bomb drives with the Ventus but I also had to swing out of my shoes to do it.

The Rogue on the range after my round today felt awesome once I got the timing down. I took that same timing with some swings of my 7i and I was adding 5-6 yards and  having a little baby draw with it.

I played three rounds while I was on vacation, one 9 & two 18s.  The 9-hole 39 was pretty decent (Challis Golf Course, Challis ID), and the last 18 at 84 was okay (Shadow Valley -- Boise ID) , but the middle 18 was an epic disaster.  😆  We were visiting some friends in Sun Valley, ID and I got to play one one of the courses in the area.  Most rounds don't go great when you start with an 11. (Two off the tee OB on a par 5).  I gutted it out, but I had some serious swing issues on the day (Many shanks) and tee to green I was atrocious.  Only by the grace of a decent short game did I manage to eke out 4 pars.  (Two of which were sandies... so go figure)  I also donated six balls to the golf gods on my way to a cool 51/51 102.  Good times.  😆

After the round (which is the right time) my friend told me that he thought my setup looked a little funny.  Mildly jammed up, squatty, with hands too low.  Turned out to be mostly spot on, & I think a result of compressed swings in my marginally too small garage hitting bay.  Figured out after I got home that I was trying to hold onto the lag and wasn't releasing the club.  Perfect recipe for getting stuck, shanking the ball, and blocking shots.  Some (properly done) framing upgrades and mods are coming to my shop/office/garage.

EDIT:  Forgot to mention that I sober whiffed a drive for the first time in a "Decade?" on that bad round.  Weird day for sure.

Got in 9 holes after work today in some really windy conditions. Shot a 43 with 3 pars, 5 bogeys and double on my 8th hole. The wind was definitely playing a factor and helped me to make some poor decisions with club selection on a couple of occasions. However, there was a highlight during my round with only 14 putts. Definitely pleased with that part of my game today.

Played only 9 today after a brutally hot 18 yesterday.  Shot 39 (par 37).  Birdied the #1 hdcp hole number 1.  Bogied number 2 with a pulled tee shot that I had to punch out.  Then par, bogie, par, bogie, par, par, par. 6 GIRs and 6/7 FIRs, 16 putts.

Todays warmup was abbreviated by the lightning sirens but did get to hit some. Still trying to figure out some best uses for my new RTX6 52* and 56* when turf is abnormal/tight or if buried in Bermuda rough.  For being buried in Bermuda, my 48* set gap wedge does much better. I hit a 80% gap wedge about 90 yards and same as full swing 52*.  Nice to have choices.

And again, my new Ping G430 woods (7w and 4/5w) are game changers for me (previously didn’t have any woods), and knocking 2-4 strokes off my 9 hole scores.  Eg, hole one, had a good tee shot but second shot was uphill about 175 yards and pin in the back.  My 7w was about 15’ past the hole - previously was undoable.  My 4/5 wood gets me 20-50 yards from the green, and possibly closer on really good strikes, and I’m pretty good with wedges.

I can not think of a better feeling when all of the hard work finally comes together. Put together a personal best 9 hole score the other night. Could have easily been a couple strokes under had I not missed a few 5’-10’ putts. Overall though, I’m pleased. Driver was on, irons were only slightly off, and short game was pretty solid. Coming off the course with that kind of high, is what makes this game so special. We have have to just remind ourselves that through the hard work, and tough rounds, there’s a personal best out there for us, just waiting to be shot.

Keep on grinding and Hammer on!

After the less-than-stellar play the last few rounds, I decided to hit the range Monday evening - I've had a suspicion for a while that when things start going sideways (sometimes literally), my alignment and ball position are getting out of whack, so I worked only on those things and it seemed to work out well, at least for the swing I had that day and it fortunately carried over into league last night.

So last night was our final competitive league night. My teammate and I won the first half and came in 2nd the second half. Our opponents for the championship were my good friend's team in a rematch of last week (where both me and my teammate lost). Because of the way things worked out, I was actually playing two matches simultaneously - one match for 1st and 2nd and another for 3rd and 4th. Starting off the first tee, I got a great break. Below is an image of the first hole. I've drawn the approximate area of OB. I have discussed with a couple other guys that if my miss was a hook, I would hit driver on this hole all day long as the area that is not OB is well within reach as long as you don't catch any of the trees. As it is, this hole does not set up well with my fade, so I always hit a hybrid to stay short of the bunker. As it turns out, I toe-hooked my hybrid but cleared the trees and ended up in play about 10 yards past OB (about where the yellow dot is). I took that as a sign that luck was on my side for the evening.

image.png.023dca74345eccb4b5b5f68f9bfb521c.png

My primary opponent had a rough night - he was feeling under the weather, clearly had a fever as sweat was pouring from him in places that people don't normally sweat, but he was a trooper and gutted it out, shooting a 47 (4 over his handicap). My secondary opponent shot at his handicap. I ended up shooting a 37 (+2) for a net 32 with 3 bogies, a birdie, and the rest pars (with a missed 4-footer for another birdie) while my partner shot a net 34 winning his primary match, but losing his secondary match, so we ended up winning 1st place and 4th place. We will win a little bit of money, but it is mostly about bragging rights.

In other news, my league handicap has now dropped to a 4. I don't know how I feel about that - I like that it means I played well this year, but don't like that I am giving more strokes to people, a couple of which I don't feel like I should be giving any strokes to. Here is an updated chart of how my handicap has progressed since the beginning of 2020:

League play last night was encouraging. Hit some good drives, approach shots were better than usual, putting was consistent, resulting in a 39. I've been icing my ribcage 3-4 times a day for 2 days, then heating pad til the next Tuesday league. Seems to be healing but slowly. Probably the 9 holes isn't actually helping, lol. Only 2 more weeks remaining. Best hole of the evening, #13 par 5, tee shot 255 down the middle, 187 to mid green, pin was blue/back, slight downhill lie took 6 iron, landed just short between 2 bunkers, ran 8 feet by. Looked like it was going in. Lipped out eagle putt, birdie! My son lost his match, I won mine. We cant seem to play good at the same time!

Played in the 2 man best ball yesterday and iron shots were going great with the new sticks.  Driver suffered again and ended up just hitting the 3 wood most of the day.  I decided to take the driver out this morning and cut 3/4in off back to my old driver length and will be hitting the range this evening to work out the issues.

Played after a solid storm. Course was drenched, but greens were fine. I was alone so played 2 distinct balls from the tips. It was a real mental test as I was shocked at how inconsistent I was. Indeed, I couldn’t string 2 good consecutive shots. Missed right, then missed left. Missed in the woods, then missed in the water, etc. It really exacerbated the weakest area of my game: DRIVER.

Only got to play 14 holes as it started POURING. I hit 2 bombs off the 14th tee and by the time I got to my drives, the fairway and green were swamped (see photos below). Waited the storm out but I was completely drenched and the course was unplayable so I called it a day.

1st ball: 65 (+8), FIR: 4/11, GIR: 8/14, Putts: 26 (3 penalty strokes)

2nd ball: 70 (+13), FIR: 5/11, GIR: 3/14, Putts: 23 (4 penalty strokes)

Shot a kind of boring 44, 8 bogeys and 1 par. The wind was really blowing hard and couldn't hit the second shots on the green. Every time we had a cross wind I would aim a little left or right thinking the wind would push it towards the green and it never did. Oh well try again tomorrow, play well and have fun.
