How'd you play?

... I never thought these words would come off my fingertips but evidently I am the star of a new book "Berenstain Bears Too Much Golf"! I have played 30 rounds in 33 days and the 3 other days I hiked in the mountains with the Mrs. I AM TIRED! I have 4 more days booked here in Phoenix finally taking Sunday off to watch the Masters Final and then a 3 day drive back to Chicago. Now I know I will get back to the Midwest and after 3 days rest I will be looking to get out on the course but for now the sun and the heat and the every day is the same is finally getting to me. LOL, I am not looking for sympathy as I am sure many friends back home or in Canada would love to be equally tired.

... Shot a 72 today with 3 birdies and 3 bogies missing two eagle putts which were the only two shots that really got my full attention. That's when I knew I just need a break.

... Thanks, 75* would be great. Low 90's and 72 oz of water in the desert and still thirsty is getting old. When I come back to Phoenix next year I will try and be smarter than I look and just schedule some days off every 10 rounds or so.

Played second match in my golf league last night. It was a bit of a struggle. Course handicap was 1 and I ended up 7 over. Triple, double, 3 bogies, and a birdie. Was hitting the ball well, just not putting the ball in the right place. Triple was on a par 3 that I nuked the ball 20 yards over the green, off the cart path and into a water hazzard. Double happened after shanking a ball from the fairway that ended up behind a tree. One of the bogies was a good one after driving the ball through the fairway into a water hazard. The other bogie was the result of catching a tree brach after not hitting the hall far enough to get around a corner to have a good angle for the second shot.

Probably didn't help that one of my opponents shot a smooth -4 with a course handicap of 0.

Played nine in Dallas at Tenison Park under VERY windy conditions. Gusts were at LEAST 30! Crazy. First time I've played here and it wasn't in very good shape. Fun track, though.

This “new” swing, which has consisted of ONE lesson, is killing me. Hit two good drives... Not any really solid iron shots. The game has definitely gone in reverse!

The Epic is epic.

Played Tierra Rejada today from the blues with a 40/37

Dialed the Epic up to 11.5° as the Fujikura pro62 green seems to have a lower trajectory.

I don't have any spin numbers, but good Lord the ball flight is majestic now.

And it was long. Really amazing club. My buddy has his Rogue SZ, and we were torching them all day. The jailbreak stuff is seriously good. I had numerous shots in the 270/280 range today, and while I know that's not long compared to the real bombers, but for a fat little 62 year old, I was thrilled.

My long putts were good distance control, but I couldn't seem to drop any birdies other than one that was 6” kick in.

Guys my goal for the past 2 seasons has been to break 85. I am playing to a 17 right now so I consistently shoot in the upper 80s low 90s. I have been putting in the extra work and focusing on the tee box and 100 and in. I walked 18 today and shot an 83!!! I played boring/smart golf and got it done. I am so happy. Its one of those things that you work really hard at and you keep falling short but then it finally happens and you feel so rewarded.

I got my putter cut an inch and regripped yesterday with a Superstroke Flatso 2.0. I also put the Cobra F8 in the bag after being fitted for it yesterday. I honestly feel like those two tweaks helped this happen. I had several drives over 300 today. I am very excited to track the data on these two clubs and see what happens over the next couple of weeks after I get a few more rounds in. I am loving the Cobra Connect feature of the F8 as well.

Today was a good day. Old Fashions will be had late into the night. Cheers fellas.

I got out for a quick 9 today. First time playing since last August. Shot a 43 with 5 pars.

I was cruising along with 4 pars and 3 bogeys until I reached #8 where I took a 7 on a par 3.

I was happy with my iron approach shots, but both par 3's my iron shots from the tee were horrendous. Putting was pretty good, drives were pretty good, chipping was so-so and thankfully didn't land in the sand at all as my bunker play has been awful.

Nice to get out on the course though for the first time in awhile.

We still love New England, gorgeous part of the country. From End October to April it became unlivable for us as we got older. Oddly even though I can play year round I miss the Northern golf courses, more character and I hate Bermuda. BUT the weather is easy in the “older” person.

Enjoy, Spring is right around the corner

... Right there with you. After 30 years of bent grass greens, bermuda is just so difficult to read. The Mini Tour kid I played with from Canada said it took him about 6 months to get comfortable with reading the grain and how afternoon sun effects putts as well as a little more grain late in the day. Down/up grain was tough but side grain is where he really struggled. He gave me some words of wisdom I have tried to use but my brain keeps disagreeing and trying to add some break that just isn't there, although it certainly looks like it is.

... He told me "whatever break you read, cut that in half. Then cut that half in half and you are probably close to the right read". Not always true but I have found it is close to the right read more often than not. After a month in Orlando and another month here in Phoenix, I am playing more and more putts just inside the hole instead of setting it just outside and waiting for it to turn into the hole. That works so well on bent as it either topples in the side or breaks a hair more than I think but still catches the hole. I have probably had 50+ putts that I putt just outside the hole that never broke til it lost it's speed and even then just a hair. And If I had $1 for every time I have heard someone I played with used to Northern Bent grass greens say "I can't believe that doesn't break!" I could buy a condo here.

And a very nice condo at that

Seems I'm always waiting for it to break I to the hole... never does!

Got out today to play 18 with my father in law. Overcast when we got to the course played solid on the front had a few missed opportunities. Started raining on 3. Shot a solid 45. Rain quits on tee box for 10. Play a great back 9. End up with a 37 on the back to shoot 82.. VERY happy.. missed a chance to break 80 for the first time once again.. but had a great back 9 to close strong.

I mentioned this in the Master's thread. Had a great day on the course today. Tee'd off at 3, shot 37 on the front grabbed a Bloody Mary at the turn shot 39 coming in and watched the Masters on the back in between shots. Walked off the course at 558. First round with the G30's - huge potential there. Half a club longer with the 7 and closer to a full club longer with the 6 iron - just what I needed to bridge the gap to the hybrid.

It was nice to get away from Bayou - I hit 12 irons today verses 8 or 9 there.

Didn't drive it especially well. I have some work to do there.

The weekend weather just sucks around here!!  My wife wanted to play because it's the only days she gets to play 18 holes.  Saturday was rain all morning, turning to wind in the afternoon.  Sunday was no rain, but winds up to 30mph were very difficult to play.  We have very few trees, so not much shelter.

For the 36 holes I had a total of 9 pars and 9 doubles, plus 2 birdies.  Scoring was tough.  Shot 86 and 90.  Today on the par 4 #10 uphill into the wind, my approach shot was 5 yards short of the green.  My chip shot to a back pin location was 6 feet past the pin.  I went to mark my ball, but before I got there the wind started the ball rolling, and it went in the cup for my only birdie today.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
