36-40 76 - ironically I was far more consistent on the back - the way the course laid out it was almost all into the wind, several longish par 4's. I stuffed 2 shots on the front for birdie and had a great bunker shot on the front that really helped the score.

I heard several great swing calls during the round. Haven't heard that in a long time.

Need a different button, cuz I can't “like” this post, cuz accidental deaths are far too common.

One of my best friends is buying a motorcycle today, at age 61...

With no history of riding.

We all just shake our heads and ask...Why?

Most of us owned and rode multiple bikes, and we all dumped them on and off. Young people can take that beating better.

Not thinking I'd want to deal with that at my age. And it's not so much the riders fault, it's the other people who don't see the ...

Ok sorry, rant over...

I've had motorcycles since I was 16, but didn't ride for 30 years.  Bought one in 2003, still have it but haven't ridden since my knee replacement.  It was a senior moment when I bought it.

OK, I'll ruin it.

The worse score this year, maybe in two years, I don't remember.  I shot 90.  Driver was either a push right or duck hook left; not one good drive all day.  On top of that I didn't make anything around the green.

Highlight (if I can call it that):  10 foot par putt from the fringe with the pin in.  I have never, ever seen this in my life.  My putt did a 360º around the hole and didn't hit the stick; one inch out of the hole.  How does it do that?

Have played a few 9 hole rounds but today was my first full 18 gaming the persimmon driver and 4-wood, shot 45-43=88* which wasn't bad. Played the same tees I normally do with my modern driver.

My longest drive was on number 10 where I switched from the Callaway Chromesoft to the Vice Pro Plus. Had been hitting my drives 225-235 on the front but first drive with the Vice was 250 uphill. I did hit 10/14 fairways, 2 misses were within 5 yards of the fairway and 2 I lost right and had to punch out. I guess I need to do a little more experimenting with different balls for use with the persimmons.

I also switched back to my 1950's era Hillerich & Bradsby Mars 70 putter and had 32 putts on the day with no 3-putts. This thing was my gamer for years but I felt I needed to try something more modern. I felt much more comfortable using my old faithful.

All in all, a good round.

*should also note, this was my first round since I replaced all my grips with leather Gripmaster grips and I played without a glove for the first time since I was a kid. It felt great not having a sweaty glove on my hand.

Went 49/49 for a sub-100 round of 98 which is a personal best! Birdied a long par-5 for my second recorded solo birdie ever and also carded 2 solid pars. Kind of fell apart on the last couple of holes by coming in with 7's on each, but was generally happy with my total. What was odd was that during warm-ups, I worked my way up through my bag like normal and was really striking wedges and all irons very well. Had several spectacular hits with my revamped 5W (new stiff-flex shaft) but the 3W & driver were both a mess for some reason. This mess actually translated to the round with both those clubs ultimately being relegated to the penalty box for most of the day-just couldn't hit anything solid with them...The the 4i (my most "hated" club) came alive and save my bacon on several holes...go figure!

The birdie is really nothing spectacular and was not executed in any way that could be described as "pretty" fer sure. I've been struggling with par-5's of late for some odd reason and this one seemed to start like most others lately. It was hole #5 playing at 422-yds. I hit driver with a "power fade" right of the fairway, bounced off the gravel cart path and landed nearly over to the next fairway but around some sparse trees. Had about 130 left out of a fluffy lie from which I hit a knockdown/punch with the 4i to stay low of the branches. It also stayed right, hit the damn cart path again and landed hole-high in rough about 45-yds right of the pin. 58* wedge that went straight up and bounded onto the green below the cup by about 20-ft. Drained a super-straight putt like a BOSS! I was awarded the "shot-of-the-day" for the putt. Happy boy!

The funeral was for the maintenance guy at my old course.  He was in a motorcycle accident in town at the end of July, and was in an induced coma until he passed away last week.  Great guy!!

Sorry to hear about him... :-(

Has your wife now made you get rid of your motorcycle?

I played 36 holes yesterday - 18 in the morning with MattF (shot a pretty ho-hum 97). There was not much that was too terribly ugly (a couple drives and fat shots that made both of us cringe), but nothing all that great, either. I did make my fair share of decent length putts.

In the afternoon, I felt a bit more comfortable over the ball and shot a 90 and had a few really nice shots that I promptly spoiled by doing something stupid. I had many long putts that were way short, but I (fortunately) made quite a few in the 4-6 ft range that I kept leaving myself.

Played 18 yesterday, and even though I felt like I was generally keeping the ball in play and trying to play smart golf my scores didn't reflect that.... Ended up with a 48 + 51 = 99 (gross).

Had 4 bogeys and 1 par on each 9, so that was ok, but... it was a bunch of doubles (5 total) AND 3 triples on the back 9 (OUCH!) that really hurt....

Thought putting was a part of the problem - felt like I just missed several I coulda/shoulda made - but then after counting up on the card had 3 x 3-putts but also 2 x 1-putts for a total of 37, so essentially averaging 2 putts per hole (good enough, for now).

Tee shots were ok-ish - got 6 into the fairway (so just less than 1/2) and most of the rest were playable, eg. just off the fairway, not in big trouble. Two penalties, both from wayward tee shots - one went left and downhill and rolled in front of a tree so took a drop (added a stroke); the other I sliced really badly into the next fairway and just re-tee'ed and played the provisional (added 2 strokes). And .. of course .. in a classic case of over-compensating that provisional tee shot was low-left but ended just off the fairway.

Par 3s were a mixed bag but not the worst holes even though I didn't hit any in 1 (was left on one, short on one and long on two for 3 bogeys and 1 double with a 3-putt).

So... looks like the biggest part of my (current...) playing problems is everything in-between the tee shot and the green on 4s and 5s (mosty the 4s). Which is disappointing as I've been working a lot on irons and wedges. Practice, of course, off of a mat cannot replicate the uneven lies you have to deal with on the course but still ... there's too many times where as soon as I've struck the ball I've said to myself, "oh boy THAT was wasted shot". So let's just say there's at least 8 holes (those doubles and triples) where I could be able to pick up at least one shot on each, and so get much closer to playing bogey golf.............

Anyway, one bright spot is only ONE lost ball - was that sliced tee shot on #17 (which technically was playable, and yes I should have gone and found it and played it, but it was waaaaay uphill and out of sight and waaay over to the side and I thought by the time I got there the old guys in front of us would find it and pick it up, like everything else they found, and it was just easier to re-tee).

Tried to explain just that to my other half, but gave in to her repeated pleas and finally basically gave away my Ducati Monster ('94 900)....

(ok, let the shaming begin!)

Not to take anything away from the original post concerning the motorcycle death. It's always a sad day when someone is called home while doing something that they probably truly loved like riding.

cksurfdude, It's funny how the marital dynamics work that way some times.. I grew up with motorcycles, ATV's, and guns. My whole life I was as comfortable with them as I was a fluffy baby bunny. At a young age, I was properly trained and strictly adhered to safety protocol and never had any issues (yes I realize that I've been very fortunate).

My wife however, grew up in a house where anything that didn't have extra padding was dangerous and bad. We get married and everything gets sold. I didn't mind at the time because I was entering new chapter in my life and I'd had about as much fun as any 30 year old could have up to that point. 8 years and 2 kids later, I'm realizing that the guns I can do without.. Motorcycle riding though is like other addictions. Once you're a rider, you're always a rider and it just flows through your blood. I still get that twitch in my eye and numb stabbing at my heart whenever I see/hear a really nice bike go by.. or some nice dirt bike gear loaded on a trailer on its way out of town toward the sand dunes.

My wife says that once the kids are out of the house and I'm retired, I can get another bike.. I truly hope that the desire is cold dead by then and that my "senior moments" can be satisfied by other more sensible hobbies.

This is the last video that I made of my last bike to post on Cycle Trader before I sold it.. I just can't bring myself to delete it..

Played over the weekend. Started slightly annoyed the pro shop didn't inform us the greens were just aerated.

Proceeded to play a solid front 9 and completely fell apart on the back. Putting was a complete crap shoot. It's normally where I can pick up strokes on my round, but between each green having vastly different speeds and the ball bouncing like a monster truck wrecking cars, it was a challenge. I ended with 6 x three putts. It's possible I was mentally inconsistent, focusing too much on the green condition and not enough on my swing. Blaming myself is much less fun though, the green conditions are 100% why my putting was in the dumpster.  ;)

Personal performance aside, it was a beautiful day out and the rest of the course was great. We've had a stretch of relief from the heat in Ma and it has made being outside so much more enjoyable. I didn't ever see another group ahead or behind us and it was fantastic feeling like we had the course to ourselves. Thank goodness golf can manage to be fun regardless of the scorecard.

Well done!! How'd you like Highlander? I haven't been there since the remodel.

I've played it quite a bit. The course was shortened but still a great course. We buy the VIP cards that allows up to play for $37.50 with a cart.. almost can't beat it. The course is usually in great shape. Play It.

One of those boring rounds where everything works.

Boring yet extremely satisfying.

Didn't make any good putts, but didn't really make any bad putts...

Didn't make any great shots, just made solid shots...hard to describe

OK, I'll ruin it.

The worse score this year, maybe in two years, I don't remember.  I shot 90.  Driver was either a push right or duck hook left; not one good drive all day.  On top of that I didn't make anything around the green.

Highlight (if I can call it that):  10 foot par putt from the fringe with the pin in.  I have never, ever seen this in my life.  My putt did a 360º around the hole and didn't hit the stick; one inch out of the hole.  How does it do that?

I can't believe you guys liked that post.  I sure didn't like writing it.

So...  the next day.

Today my buddies and I decided to ride instead of walk.  One guy is still recovering from a leg injury, and the other guys is, well 78 years old.

I shot +4, +2 for a round of 78.  How is it I can shoot 12 shots better the next day?  No birdies!!

I only hit 7 fairways and 9 GIR, but only 29 putts and that included two 3-putts.  I was a scramblin' which I didn't do yesterday.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Well, last night was Twi-Light League. We had a 3.5 point lead going into last night. We were playing the 2nd place, which happens to be my son and his partner.  We beat them 9.5 - 8.5, was a little bittersweet, but just a little. So, now we have a 4.5 point lead with 2 weeks to play. if the past is any barometer, things still can change pretty fast.
