How'd you play?

77 on Friday in the most insane wind I’ve ever played in. 2 clubs all day, gusts to 60mph where at one point it lifted my push cart off the ground (thankfully I was holding it!). 
 

Had to double 18 just to make sure my handicap wouldn’t get too low.

Blah. Unremarkable round filled with a few great shots and a lot of poor play inside 75 yards again. Putting isn't as bad as it looks - just not doing myself any favors with approach shots. Driver was pretty good again. Should have known after putting my opening Super Hybrid tee shot perfectly into the middle of the fairway that the rest of the round might be rough .

49/46/95 rough day on the front and not much to show on the back. Hit just about all the fairways on the back while bouncing around on the front. Wind was a big factor and pace of play was killer with a 5 hour round. Need to get below 20mph wind gusts to get my feet underneath me with a bit warmer weather. Today should allow for that, Looking to go low!!

Played in a modified Stableford event in my Men's Club yesterday.  By virtue of my slowly establishing hdcp, I'm placed in the first flight, which plays the blue tees, everyone else plays the white tees.  Course ratings are 71.4/127 vs 69.0/122.  They use course hdcp, the event is based off net, I got 10 for yesterday's round.

Wound up shooting 81 (par 71), with three doubles (ugh).  Started on #10 tee, was 4-over on the first nine, then 6-over on the second nine.  Adding flavor to that, the front nine is rated easier than the back.  Yay me. 

Felt like I was fighting my iron game the entire round.  I'd hit the ball solidly, only to see weird lefts and rights out of it.  When I'd hit it straight, I'd misplay the wind, misclub, or do something else stupid, and wind up short or long.  

Saving grace was my driver game, which is ironic.  I'd started the year playing my Original One, only to swap it out for a round in 25+ mph winds for something I could tune down to 7.5* (R11s).  Rode that donkey a little too long, apparently, and put the OO back in bag; hit the ball well off the tee.  Was on or just off the fairway on all but two holes where I'd hit the OO, those two being where I'd hit Long Duk Dong tee shots.  (Paid for both of those). 

I *do* find it funny how strange this game of golf is for me, where smaller seems to be better.  LOL

Placed 4th in my flight with 10 pts, thanks to the 5 pts I got for birdie on one of my stroke holes.  And, my three doubles not hurting me any more than a bogey, due to the modified Stableford system.

Predictable spin is not in my repertoire, even with new wedges.  I don't aggressively attack the ball for shorter shots and typically get more roll out.  As such, that's my go to shot.  Works well, until I short side myself (which I also do way too often).

If I can get my iron game figured out, I think I can get into the low 90's and even possibly high 80's. 

I was playing solo and stuck behind a foursome that didn't know the meaning of "do you want to play through? ". They were slow and it got me all out of whack. 

My game will get there and I'll really appreciate it once I get things straightened out. It was a beautiful day just to be outside and I've got a couple of days I'm taking off work next week that will be good to play again. 

Were you playing or describing my game???  

How do you like the Arccos? Do you have any issues with missing shots? I played 6 rounds so far and seems like every hole it misses a drive or a pitch. I also feel like it doesn't track putts very well for me even when I mark the hole location with caddie link. I use it for the GPS too so I feel like I'm getting distracted by it making sure shots are logged when getting ready for my next shot.

I love Arccos, it gives me an honest and brutal assessment of how I'm playing and where I need to improve. I do occasionally have issues with missing shots. Yesterday on the 10th hole it didn't pick up my drive or my second shot and I had to manually input them. After that, it picked up the rest of my shots on the hole and for the round. 

The main thing you have to watch for is the duffed chip that goes about 5 feet, Arccos won't pick up shots within a certain distance of each other. It can also, as you said, be a bit of a distraction on the green.

One of the wedges I regularly use, when lofts permit, is over 30 years old.  It performs rather nicely.

Weather was awesome and the round was good.

40/43 with 3 bogeys 1 double and 2 triples. What could have been. I was happy to have 2 steaks of at-least 4 pars.

Driver all day was good. Couple just took the wrong line but had 4 drivers at close to 300 or more. Never took advantage though as I could not wrangle a birdie even though i was in position to a few times.

overall nothing bad consistently the two triples were poor tee shots and bad execution to help myself get back into the hole (both penalties and were not driver related)

 

this hole I had two great shots and I’m really kicking myself not having anything to attack greens on par 5s. Could have easily reached in 2 and the 4 iron I pured but hit a soft spot and plugged.....

All in all I’m happy and have never scored this low or hit off the tee this long this early. Very positive.

Today was ball experiment day. But it wasn't planned. I was the first one off and the grounds crew was generous with found balls today. They left me a new (once hit) ball on half the holes. So why not try them out. My son now works on the grounds crew so he either leaves me a present or brings them home.

Hole 1, I tried the ProV1X. Made par but I didn't like the feel of the ball. It hit long though.

Hole 2, TaylorMade TP5X. Made par on my nemesis hole. The ball played well but still felt to firm for me.

Hole 3  Top Flight Gamer, came up short in the bunker. Didn't convert so 1 over. 

Hole 4, Calaway Chrome Soft  Made Par but the ball felt good so I kept it in play for another hole.

Hole 5  Bogey. Good drive 2nd shot was long, chip onto green just kept on rolling. Green sloped from back to front. 2 putt. 

Hole 6 Titleist AVX. Good feel, par 3, made par. Decided to keep in play until I stopped doing well.

Hole 7 Good drive, easy par.

Hole 8 Smoked a drive on par 5. First time on in two. Missed Eagle putt but had a tap in par. Starting to like this ball.

Hole 9 and 10 Birdie's

One bogey on 16, I came up right of the green in the sand trap.  Lipped out on my par save attempt.

Parred everything else. So I shot even par for the day but got to try a few new balls. 

Went over to the range after my round to work on my six and seven iron. They are the clubs that put me in the sand. Great weather today, no lost balls, quite a few found balls and I still have some left over to test out.

... Really awesome stuff. Just remember golf is a journey so enjoy the trip. One day you will get to the level that you are disappointed with a par LOL. When I started I had a natural ability for the game and was shooting in the 80’s the first year I played BUT it took me a looooong time to shoot in the 70’s. Getting to the point I could break par seemed to take forever but with lots of work and patience I finally got there and so can you!

... What fun! Golf balls are so personal for a variety of reasons. But I have to say the new 2021 TP5x feels a little softer than the previous version. The TP5 already feels pretty soft so hopefully the grounds crew finds one for you. There are many premium balls I could play and be perfectly happy with but the new TP5x checks all the boxes for me. Sounds like the AVX might be a keeper for you.

I’m totally pumped for this round. I was executing shots that I WANTED to hit which is huge. Clean up the 2 bad holes and I’m cooking. Was a beautiful day that felt great as a whole.

I enjoy my competitive drive keeps pushing me to go lower. Time will tell!

You are starting out the year on fire! It's a shame the 4 iron ball ended up plugging, having the chance to have an eagle putt would have been exciting. As far as not having looks at birdies, touch seems to be the last thing to come back after a long winter off. Keep it up!

That's just cool that your son leaves you presents out on the course. I know the Gamer has performed well for you, but it sounds like the AVX might just be a contender. I've been playing the TP5 and love it, but since I'm about to run out of balls I might have to pick up some of the X since there's no regular 2020 5's on the website in the practice  version in the PIX. I thought the patterns would be a distraction, but it makes it easy to find my ball on the ninth hole which is riddled with balls from the range.

Oh what a day today was/coulda been!  It was in fact a career day but also an almost had it!

Shot a career best 37/37 +2 74  5/14 FIR, 5/18 GIR, and 25 putts!

I managed to play the first 8 holes @ 1 under and went into the par 5 9th with my goal of under par for 9 holes at my finger tips. Smoked a drive right down the middle. Got greedy and tried to reach with my trusty 5 wood and snap hooked it ob. That lead to a double bogey and a 1 over front 9.

I went to the back 9 hot under the collar and played the first 5 holes 3 over trying to get my score back to even. I stepped to the driveable 6th hole(9-hole course again) and smoked my tee shot to just short of the green. I managed to chip in for eagle. I finished with 3 pars.  
The eagle definitely made me feel better about the round after that terrible double to close out the front. 
 

I was extremely happy with the 25 putts but it is slightly misleading number wise due to just missing a lot of greens and chipping it close. I can say that I believe I only missed 2 putts inside 10’ so the confidence is growing quick.

Absolutely brutal day. All week the forecast was showing <5mph winds, and then all the sudden today it was steady 15mph with some prevailing gusts in the upper 20's. The back 9 (especially when it's windy) exposes any faults in your ball striking. I actually felt like I was playing pretty well the first 5 holes (except for a duck hook driver), just wasn't scoring well. After that things kinda went sideways on me. I was hitting my lines exceptionally well with the putter, and was misreading all over the place.

44/49; 93 (+21, net +9)

FIR: 3/14 (some fat shots crept in this round off the tee, and the wind really threw me off)

GIR: 2/18 (I was on the fringe on 5 greens)

32 putts

A few rounds into using it, Arccos seems to be clearly showing my glaring weakness is my approach game. So far, my handicap breakdowns are Driving: 11.2, Approach: 19.5, Short: 9.8, Putting 5.3. Looks like I need to spend some quality time at the range with 7 iron and down.

I still feel like I'm shaking off the winter rust and haven't scored a round near as well as I feel like I can play. But it's hard to say four 18 hole rounds and two 9 hole rounds aren't a large enough sample size. Just have to keep grinding away (and hope I can play a round without wind one of these days too)!

Fourth day in a row for me playing, and I can feel it!!  No legs!  Pretty good day... until #16-18.  I managed to play the last 3 holes... bogey, bogey, quad and still shot 82.  I hit shots on 18 from places I haven't been before!!

New Callaway Epic Max driver was good, but I need to change the grip; thought I could play it for awhile, but it's coming off tomorrow and a Pure DTX midsize is going on to match my other clubs.

The greens are almost back to normal after punching last month.  Pitching was a B-.  I could do a better job getting the ball closer to the hole, but putting was solid; good speed control.

-Drive lands in fairway, then follows the slope of the ground to the right rough

-ball below feet stance, not comfortable going for green

-punch out 15yds sideways

-lob wedge long into bunker

-bunker shot against the lip, blast it to front of green

-two putts

Hole 4 Par 3:

-finally hit a GIR

-three putt bogey

Hole 5 Par 4:

-3 wood left into trees

-punch out attempt hits a wooden barrier that prevents carts from driving into fairway, bounces back into the trees

-punch out attempt two hits the same wooden barrier and trundles into fairway

-gap wedge onto green

-three putts

Hole 6 Par 4 (number one handicap hole):  things get better

-solid drive but left of fairway

-7 iron over a tree onto green

-long 40ft putt almost goes in (finally a par)

Hole 7 Par 5:

-drive hit dead left into trees (gone)

-2nd drive better, finds fairway bunker

-solid layup out of bunker

-lob wedge, two putts 

Hole 8 Par 4:

-5 iron off tee, perfect 

-40yd shot over bunker no room to work with, hit it ok, but on fringe, par

-Boom time driver

-5 iron off tee, struck well, lands in mud and we never found it

-massive drive

-85yds, hit good shot

-Toe hook driver into unplayable 

-Drop and hit 4 iron layup solid

-125yds back pin, gap wedge airmailed green

-chip close, one putt

Hole 16 Par 3:

-9 iron, two putt par

Hole 17 Par 4:

-6 iron off tee, perfect

-pitch to 4ft, finally make a birdie

Hole 18 Par 4:

-perfect monster drive

-range finder battery died, thought pin was in back (no daylight left really)

-hit a pin seeker 9 iron only to find out the flag was in the front 

-three putts to finish 

So yeah, that was that LOL. I got my money’s worth by taking lots of strokes, visiting the trees numerous times, and putting plenty on the greens.  But hey, there’s always next time, and I enjoyed the company of the other single I got paired up with.

Great day on the course yesterday, all around a decent round for me. The score wasn't what I wanted but it easily could have been there. Yesterday was all about consistency with my irons, wedges and short game. 12/18 fairways hit and 5/18 GIR, really working to increase the GIR but it's higher now than it has been, but the big thing is I'm now more consistent with my ball striking with my irons and wedges which gives me a better chance at hitting greens. A little correction of my grip made the biggest difference. the bad 34 putts. The good was I shot an 88, 43/45. The back I had 2 bad holes. take those out of the equation and easily should have seen scores below 85

Got out yesterday at my local course. Had some flooding on the back nine, not unusual this time of year as it's in a flood plane, so I played the front twice. It was not great. Was working on some things so no real official score for the round, with a number of extra shots to work some things out. Iron play came around after a bit but managed to find a number of green side bunkers. Driving is back to a tough place I can get to where I can't get around on one and just hit wipey fades. Gotta get to the range and get that figured out.

On the plus side the Shot Scope from @fozcycleworked great and didn't miss a shot all round. Not that I really wanted to see the numbers on that one.

Played Black Bear in Franklin NJ.  I used to live across the road from it.  Very familiar course. 

They added a gold tee, backed up the white and blue, and eliminated black tees.  The blue is basically the black tee now.  So playing from the whites, where the blue tees used to be, felt strange and farther than I'm used to.  

That didn't matter. 

 

I had the best driving day in years probably.  I just concentrated on taking easy 70% swings.  My swing was probably near dead straight as anything taking off slight left would draw a few feet, and slight right would fade a few, just depended where the face was I assume.  Anyway I was really finding the center of the club.  

 

Unfortunately that's where it ends.  2nd shots were the worst, pitching, chipping, putting was trash.  I salvaged the back 9 to shoot a 101.

Played an ok first round yesterday.  I could not get off the tee for my life and was fortunate to only be +5 (41) through the first 9.  My tee troubles caught up to me on the back 9 and I had 3 penalties for needed drops, and probably deserved a few more.  

I won't go blaming any equipment.  My swing was off (felt tight) and I wasn't adjusting to what I was doing.  I managed only 5 fairways and I remember two of those being lucky misses that found the fairway.

But for as bad as I was off the tee I was putting very well.  8 one putts including makes of 16, 21, 24, and 26 feet. 8 two putts to go along with 2 three putts.  One of the three putts was inexcusable even though it was very fast downhill bending first putt.  It was only 6-8 feet to start and rolled that far past the cup.  The second three putt was from a starting distance of 73' so while I would have liked to secure the two putt, I'm not that mad as the first putt was decent, just left me about an 8 footer that I couldn't knock in.

Overall I finished up +14 (86).  It's all good though... my drive on 18 was one that will keep me coming back for more.  278 yards and I missed the fairway by about a foot.  It was easily the best feeling drive I hit all day.  It felt great to get out there on a real course for the first time this spring.  Already looking forward to round two!

Tale of two nines yesterday.   8 FW, 8 greens, 37 putts (4 3 putts - 60’, 70’, 65’, and 65’).   38/48:86

started the day off with a birdie and hit 7 of 9 greens on the front but 3 putted 3 of them.  Iron play on the front was pretty solid and was hitting my targets. Unfortunately this was only my second time in this course so I was unfamiliar with how contoured the greens were so I had a few balls roll away from the hole.  Still the right target, just some unlucky breaks.  
 

Back nine was a disaster - 4 doubles, 4 bogeys, and 1 par along with 3 penalty strokes. On my iron shots the ball was heading toward my targets but toe strikes and thin shots resulted in lots of up and down tries and burning the edges on lots of 6-12 footers 

After a 2 over league round earlier in the week,  I really think if I can get contact figured out I will be playing some good golf.
