8 over thru the first six, then parred out for the rest of the day to save a 79. My buddy called it too.

oddly had 2 double sandy pars, and those were cool..

Surprisingly enough I got my groove back today. I was able to squeeze 9 holes in before the weather turned. I played 9 holes walking with the Motocaddy and testing the Cobalt Q6 out. I played the back 9 because the front was busy with groups that were there ahead of me. I hit all the fairways, made two sand saves and managed all pars except on hole 18. I was still short on many approaches, but my chipping was working well leaving me less than 5 footers for par.

I played hole 18 twice so far and it bit me in the butt both times. It's a par five 428 yards, dogleg right. You can hit driver off the tee if you can either cut it close to the right side or move the ball from left to right. The green is surrounded 3/4 of the way around by water. Essentially making it an island green (small island green).  The first time I played it I got greedy and hit a perfect drive leaving me 200 to the center of the green. The greens are small, so I don't know what I was thinking and went for it.  I was 4 inches short of perfect. I hit the top of the wood retaining wall. The ball bounced up and forward bounced once and off the back right side into the water. Today I said let's play smart golf. I again hit a great drive leaving me in position to go for the green with 190 yards out. I stuck to my guns and hit an easy 9 iron to put me about 60 yards out. Easy par this way. Well, I thought so. I hit my approach on to the green and it spun to the right a bit catching a slope heading toward the hole. But it kept going. All I could do was watch it roll off the green into the water. A drop, chip and putt for Bogey. All good though. I was glad to get out on the course and shoot one over for a 37. It really felt good to get out and play.

I figured you'd find your groove fairly quick and it's good to hear you did. I think you've had the least amount of time on the course than you've had since I've known you but you have such good fundamentals that it just took a few times on the course. It sounds like that 18th hole is a beast! I personally don't like 400+ yard par 4's, can't come close to the green in two for love nor money.

18th a hole with bite, I play those conservative a par is a bonus...

Cold for the first 9 then warmed up to 50, wet and sloppy for all 18 holes following over 7 inches of rain in the last few days.  I hit more mud than ball on too many shots.  Managed to salvage an 84.  Nice day tomorrow, but more rain and cold coming again next week.  Come on, Spring!!

... I hear ya Carl! I know it is winter for many so I expect little sympathy as I am the equivalent of going to a homeless shelter and complaining about a 5 star restaurant not having my favorite dessert, but the weather here has just been abysmal. We put up with 3 months of triple digit summer temps and last June set a record with 6 days in a row over 115* so I expect my reward to be warm temps and blue skies in the winter. It has been in the 50's/60's with a chilly wind and rarely gotten to within 10* of the "normal average" temps for the last 3 months. 

... I don't play on the weekends just Mon-Fri everyday and it was 76* yesterday and 78* today then dropping to 58* - 64* (with 20 mph winds) - 57* - 60* in the middle of February when the average high should be 71*!!! My body has been boiled the last 3 summers to cope with the high heat so I have a blood viscosity of 20W-50 and no complaints with insanely hot summers because I signed up for them, but this winter has been brutal and evidently I need 5W-30 blood viscosity.

It is supposed to rain tomorrow; which is my regular golf day, so I made a trip to the course today since it was Sunny, upper  40s, and only a light breeze.  Pace of play was good;  played in 3:30 but still waited on most shots. 

7 FW, 10 GIR, 32 Putts     37/41: 78

Was pretty happy with how I played. Nothing earth shattering but I was even through 13 when the wheels fell of for a bit.  I think I lost focus thinking about how well I was playing and potential score.  Finished double, double, par, double, par   Putting has been a focus for at home practice due to poor performance and after some setup adjustments I am seeing improvement in the 5-10 foot range.   Iron play was decent but there is definitely room for improvement.

I played 54 holes this week (18/ea on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Tuesday’s round was a warmup for my two day tournament, known as the “Winter Classic”, on my winter golf tour. I shot 85 on Tuesday in windy and fairly chilly conditions and other than one double bogey on the front nine and a triple bogey on the back nine, I actually played pretty well. Sadly, I had just a few horrendous “blowup holes” each day in the Winter Classic and finished in a tie for 20th place in a field of 48 golfers in my division. I had lots of good holes, won a skin with a birdie on the #1 handicap hole on Wednesday and hit more fairways in both rounds than I had hit in at least 5 months, including in the two events where I finished top three and won some decent money on the tour in November and December. The problem was that I had at least one 8 in every nine both Wednesday and Thursday, except for the back nine of my final round. The capper was the 10 that I had on hole #9 on Thursday. I was sitting at +3 when I stepped on the 9th tee, but I hooked my tee shot on that hole and had to hit a provisional ball. By the time I finished the hole, I had hit two shots from a deep greenside bunker and the second one went 40+ yards over the green and then it took two more shots to get on the green. After that 10, which took me from +3 to +9, I was out of contention. I then proceeded to make six straight pars and shot +2 on the back nine, but it was too late to get back anywhere near the top of the leaderboard.

Wife and I got away for a long weekend recently and were able to get one day of golfing in - didn't play as well as I'd hoped to (duh) but definitely wasn't too too terrible (yea).

Ended up only playing 11 holes .. first 9 took extra time as we were following an over-sized scramble .. and it was getting to be happy hour (dammit! ).

 

Sidebar: played with rental clubs .. which on the surface were good clubs .. but .. totally wrong for me. Based on everything I've learned through this forum, and from going through fittings and from experimenting on my own I'm learning what does and doesn't work so well for me. The catch here is that this was let's call it a "standard" men's set of quality, brand name clubs -- so now I see better how buying blindly off the rack can really hurt your game...

 

Ok so to pull out a few good parts...

* tee shots - tee'ed off with a 4H (driver and 3W stayed in the bag) and hit most decently; lost one ball left (thought it was on the dirt cartpath but didn't find it) and one way right (waaaay right OB and I was waiting to hear the sound of breaking glass or a car alarm )

* irons - considering I was playing ZX4s with long heavy steel shafts (950neo/R; 9i. had a Modus105/S) I think I did ok(-ish); they were kinda going in the right direction

* wedges - when I took the bag from the shop ("This is the closest we have to a senior set") I didn't realize the set only had an "A" .. no P, no S or L .. so that felt very clunky until I finally wised up and grabbed the S out of my wife's set (no "A" in hers)

* putting - interestingly, and surprisingly, was the bright spot .. no 3-putts and 3 x 1-putts on the front 9; using a blade putter (I play mallets) with a shaft so long I was holding it at the very bottom of the grip

Ended up with 3 pars, 3 bogies and 3 others so ok enough... for now...

Played a new to me course today. It was a weird little course. Pretty short, but tight tee shots and not much room to the sides. By short, I mean I only hit driver 5 times. A lot of holes required iron or hybrid off the tee because of the layout. It wasn't a terrible round, but I was pushing my irons to the right most of the day. I've got some time scheduled on Friday to get the lie angles checked since they originally fit me to 2 degrees flat and a few things have changed since then so they might need to go more upright like I was using before. Highlight of the round was the 38 ft putt with about 3 feet of break for the one birdie. Ended up with a 42/43 for an 85 despite not playing particularly well. Had 3 other putts finish within a few inches of the hole I wish would have fallen, but there are worse ways to spend a Saturday when stuck in another state over the weekend for work.

First good round for me this year, and I did it with a sore, stiff back!!  Day started cold at 26º but sunny and no wind; warmed up quickly to 51ª.  Our course had a tournament going but not a shotgun start, and we had a frost delay.  We started at 11:30am off the back nine.  

One birdie and one bogey on the first nine for Even Par 35.  The greens were the fastest I’ve seen since last fall; love putting when they are this fast.  I had several long par saves, including 2 sandys.  The second nine (our usual front nine) I had 4 bogeys, and happy with all of them!  Second nine 41.  So a round of 76, and this was a day I certainly didn’t have my “best stuff”.

Yep!  They are like par 5’s to me, and why I practice pitch shots and putting so much!!  It’s a satisfying par.

I agree El Conquistador, I place a lot of emphasis on the value of short game. I'm not quite as long as to be able to reach those holes with driver and mid to short iron. I need to get back on speed training, but right now better contact is top of the priority list.

Plus, I love the creativity of the short game and the challenge of putting. There's just a level of satisfaction to lagging longer putts close and tapping them in.

Practice came under the watchful eye of the PGA Pros at Wildwood CC yesterday afternoon on their simulators and in their indoor putting green.  The Facebook Link of the PGA HOPE Western New York page is below and starts with a good view of the group and the hitting bays area in the clubhouse lower level. 

It changes to a guy (EasyPutter you might know him) in green shirt, black sleeves, gray trousers swinging a 5 iron getting instruction pointers.  The pro only tweaked shoulder turn of maybe 5 degrees rotation to line up with feet and had me move the ball a half inch back in the stance and suddenly I was clipping the ball and not the turf first.  Direction was good with a slight fade.  Looking forward to next Saturday.

... MUCH better.  But considering she hit 63 consecutive greens in a row and the closest to her is Tiger with 29, you may want to lower your goal juuuuust a hair.

... What was ironic is once she missed a green, she spiraled downhill quickly and started missing most of them. Just shows how difficult this game is at any level!

Golf is such a strange game. Played again this morning, and hit the ball better from tee to green than yesterday, but putting was absolutely atrocious. The greens were a new level of slow that I have not experienced before. If I had been able to putt, I think the round could have been decent for the conditions, but I don't know how bad it was. I typically don't write my scores down and just find out afterwards when I upload the Shotscope information, so that I don't think about it during the round. Unfortunately, my H4 ran out of battery on 16 and I did not bring the charger with me to Florida. Next weekend I'll upload the partial round and see what happened, but it was crazy windy. I mean, 130 yard 5-iron windy, and not a mishit 5-iron. It was flushed and just died in the wind. I haven't played a ProV1x in the wind enough to compare, but I used the Proto 348 from the test today and if that was improved performance in the wind, I am scared how the previous model would have handled the wind.

An almost identical round to yesterday, but we started earlier and I was colder; also a little breeze made it feel cooler.  

3 bogeys on the front 9 for a 40 and 2 bogeys on the back nine for a 37.  Backed up the 76 yesterday with a 77 today.  Nice to have a double-bogey-free weekend!!
