I respect you for going out today. In my part of SoCal, the winds were high with a bit of hail mixed in. So grateful my tee time is tomorrow and Saturday when the temps raise to something approaching Spring.

After six years of playing, I got my first hole in one yesterday! Pretty crazy feeling to see the ball drop from the tee box. It was a slight downhill par 3 from 150 yards, got it done with a 9 iron!

I should just retire now. emoji23.png

Well done took me nearly 50 years for my first, last April, which sounds similar to yours seeing it drop. Then got a second 4 weeks, It is a crazy game.

Played 9 yesterday and shot a disappointing 46.  Different course; first 5 holes strong wings in the face for the first 5 holes. Fairways also in bad/spotty condition. Still struggling with iron and hybrid mishits, and putting continues to be a problem.  But only 1 par and 2 should’evs. Greens were tricky as they had some coloring that made them hard to read and no way to read grain.   Was pulling my 4h and 6i, except 1 that I pured my 4h and maybe 5’ offline to the right on a par 5.  Cleared a fairway bunker and hit the very top back ledge that rolled in and under a grass lip.

On the bright side - 7 strong excellent drives and my FIRs over past 20 rounds is 84%.  Feeling challenged to keep positive thoughts but I know things will turn around.  Another bright spot - I desperately need new fitted irons and had an onsight pxg fitting in Jan that didn’t resolve the shaft selection.  I’m scheduled again in 2 weeks - and the Gen5 0311 irons just came down in price to $159/club.

Where in SoCal are you?  You must be close, because I took a picture (sans golf course in the foreground, mind you) yesterday - I'm up in Santa Clarita, so I'm guessing from your proximity to those you're somewhere not too far away.  Let's play 18 sometime!

So happy to hear he's recovering well! How long are you out here (and whereabouts are you)?  Maybe you, me, Sluggo and @Syks7can try to put a game together.

But yeah - it was 36 degrees when I woke up this morning, and yesterday we had a very quick, very furious snow flurry out of nowhere.  It's...weird. 🙂 (I've lived in SoCal for 20 years and never once experienced a snow flurry)

Thanks! It’s the wonders of modern medicine.

I’m out in Bakersfield. Just a Grapevine crossing away. I’d love to play with MGS forumers, but alas, the rest of my week is booked and then I’m gone Monday morn. Thanks, though and who knows? I’ll be back again this year, likely. 🙂

Welcome to my first game of 2023.

After hitting the driving range earlier this week, I’ve been lowering my expectations—and I mean low. Lower-than-Death-Valley low. I mean, I filled my bag to the brim with old balls I was hoping to lose so I could justify buying a new box of Maxflis. Of course as many do, I also prepped for the game. I played the course mentally, did my stretches, visualized the perfect swing, made the chicken sacrifice to appease the golf gods in honor of the first game of the season … You know, I followed the highly recommended, MGS Most Wanted® pregame routine.

And this was what the day looked like.

A38FFFE6-3CB2-4F04-B5B6-19E77479CA72.jpeg.f3949079ded51f9b55f4faf9a2260185.jpeg

Felt this way, too. Gone was the wind. And rain. And hail. And cold.

After settling down, remnants of my groove showed up. Quick notes:

  • Four pars, five bogeys
  • Some pretty good drives (230-250) after settling down, but before running on fumes.
  • I wouldn’t say I found fairways all the time, but I did keep it to the “first cut.”
  • Short game needs work
  • Putting was meh. It was me, not the putter.

Final Score: I BROKE 100, Baby! 96.

I mean, I’ve done it before with a 93, but it was a while back, and I injured my back in the process.

So, I’m ahead of schedule. I wasn’t supposed to break 100 until my next game on Saturday. Today was supposed to be the throwaway game. You could say that the pressure’s off now, but come tomorrow I’m pretty sure all I’ll be thinking about is how to break 90.

Best New Club in the Bag for 2023

And the winner is: Sub 70 669-U! 🎉

It kept me in the fairway every time I pulled it out of the bag. Can’t wait to bring to the range again and pull down some numbers.

The bad news? I only lost two balls. I still have large stash of cheap balls, so no Maxfli shopping spree. Oh, well. There’s always Saturday. 😉

I'm playing tomorrow and hoping for a day just like you got - might be the last round before I go under the knife (just a little snip, so it shouldn't be a long convalesce, but still...pity me 🙂 ).  Putting two clubs in the bag that I built, to test against my gamers, which should be fun.

Where'd you play? And where you playing Saturday?

And congrats on the score!!

Shot 80 today and was actually quite happy with it- track is soaked and cart path only. This means no roll, and often have the wrong club after walking all the way across a wet fairway. And oh, did I mention the 30 mph gale force winds? Yea, that was going on too, in addition to cold as all get out. I all reality I had a great round, and hit numerous really good strikes-

mind you, this is Southern California, and I’m not kidding when I say it was cold!

Thanks! Good luck with the procedure.

This is Kern River Golf Course. It’s public, and in my humble opinion, the most beautiful one in the area (happy to be proven wrong, though). Saturday will be the same as well. I’m playing with my bro, as we always play a friendly game whenever we’re together.

Would love to get together sometime, especially when the grapevine isn’t an issue. Hopefully I’ll be back this year and we can plan something. 😀

It's pretty easy to roll solo there.  I've always scheduled a time in advance, but I suspect there's openings as I see a fair few groups of three in the mornings.  It's a great course to walk, but I will caution to maintain a mellow pace and hydrate.  From the moment you step off the green on 4 you're mostly walking uphill until you come off the teebox on 16.  You get a tiny little break at 6, 12, and sort of 14 before the last pretty steep slog uphill to 15 and the teebox on 16.

That said the course gets better for me every time I play it.  A little bit of course knowledge goes a long way there.

I drove down and back through the Grapevine on Tuesday visiting one of the client plants. It was not fun coming back with the rain, but I got out before the weird weather hit the area. I've been swamped with my other plants so I haven't had a chance to stay overnight in Santa Clarita for them recently, but hopefully things should ease up in a few months. By then the weather will be more consistent and the sun will be out longer, hopefully.

It's actually the first course I walked with my push cart (bday gift from my wife) - amazing experience, but - fun fact - if you're a big dude and wear underwear that bunches, chaffing WILL happen, and you will regret ever being born.

You ever get up to Soule Park in Ojai? Delightful Muni that's cheap and beautiful (two of my favorite things).

Also: remember when there was a "pilot season"? Sigh. Those were the days (or so I hear...)

Reminiscing; I played Soule Park in 1979 for my bride’s work golf outing.  It was beautiful then, would love to revisit. My embarrassing moment - I won closest to the pin, but missed the 3’ putt.  Have no idea what hole but IIRC, it was a par3 down hill. Embarrassment part 2 - my comeback putt was 4’, which I miraculously made.  At the time, we lived in Ventura and worked in Port Hueneme, and started looking at homes and start a family.  If Ojai had been closer, may never have moved east.

7:00 Tee Time with the Boyz.  Don’t know how the Pros are doing at Bay Hill in the wind but around 3rd hole it was 20 mph.  We were all consistent, lousy.  I got into a greenside bunker sand was harder than hitting off concrete, couldn’t get the club under the ball, twice…….
Anyway it was windy enough to just laugh about it.  Always a great time.  I think I was about +7, lost count!
