How'd you play?

Played on Sunday and was awful, which is annoying as the Sunday before I played the best round I have played in a very long time. My all round game was poor and there wasnt just one thing that was going wrong. I hooked and sliced the driver, fatted and thinned irons, around the green I was ok, but I missed 3 or 4 stupid, easy putts. BUT I had some excellent holes, just too few of them.

... In honor of Hideki Matsuyama winning the Masters, I played my Srixon Z Forged MB's today and shot a 72 with 3 birdies and 3 bogies. As many of you know I am a big fan of playing the most forgiving irons you can effectively play and for me, Z Forged ain't them. I would guess there were at least 3 or 4 shots that most likely made a difference in my score, but specifically 2 I can relate. There is a 477 yd par 5 dogleg left that is uphill off the tee and has a huge bunker guarding the corner that I cannot carry from my normal tees. But they are giving that tee box a rest and have the Silvers with the Golds reducing the hole to 444 so I can carry the bunker leaving me a 7 or 8 iron after some downhill roll over the bunker. I had a good yardage to a front pin over a deep bunker and hit my Z Forged just a little thin but right on line and caught the lip. I have no doubt at all that my King Tour 7 iron would carry that bunker. (I am gonna be so bummed when they put the Silvers back where they belong)

... I also let the wind bring my soft fade left to right to a back pin location that has a ledge in front of it and caught my Z Forged 6 iron just a little on the toe. I lost both direction and distance landing short of the ridge and rolling up just enough to send it back down the slope with some extra gusto. Again, no doubt whatsoever that the KIng Tours would have landed over the ridge.

... I did not miss the center by much, but enough to effect the shot with no perimeter weight help and both those shots cost me a minimum of one stroke. And for me, that is all the difference between shooting under par or even par. I love pulling out MB's a few times a year because they are very accurate when perfectly struck and just a lot of fun to play but mostly to remind me why I use Players Irons. I consider myself a very good ball striker but not an elite ball striker which is required to get the most out of MB's. These statements are made about my game specifically and not a recommendation against or for MB's that others may enjoy playing MB's all the time.

Zforged are great clubs. When I am at MGS they have some irons in the warmup bag and I pull them out occasionally. I can hit them well but not sure I would do well playing 18.

You speak the truth on how just being off a little bit really impacts the ball

And nice round; hoping to get my game to that level one day.

Love playing Sand Hollow!  Besides the breathtaking scenery, it's a well maintained and well laid out track.

The green speed and complexity really bit me on the front 9; I hit 8 greens but only held 3! Amazingly for me I was able to avoid 3 putting...

Shot 40/46: 86 with doubles on the last 3 holes....guess I was getting tired. I did have 2 Birdies today, one on front Par 4 # 3 and one on back Par 3 #15.

First round with ER2 and it played well. BTW, my Shot Scope died on the 15th hole. Never happened before.

So Shot Scope is the reason you doubled the last 3 holes??  Good excuse!!  🤣

Beautiful morning 7:30 Tee Time.
Played OK but couldn’t score greens were pretty crappy, 1 bird.
7th hole long Par 4 tried to channel my inner Bryson and snapped a brand new ProV1x into deep snake grass......and it was deep
Finished with Par in last 2 holes.

It can only get worse from here....

Quoting myself from last week.Sort of prophetic. Shot 47 (+11) tonight. Started bogey-birdie-par, so the last 6 were garbage. Topped the driver 3 times tonight, once right into a pond. Irons and short game were pretty good, but damage was done by then. Oh well, we'll get 'em next week.

... It has been great to get back to feeling confident with my swing on the golf course. Had a very nice start to my round today with winds about calm to about 5 mph and I had 4 birdies with 1 bogie. Then the wind picked up quickly on #9 to about 20+mph and things got difficult as it was a swirling hard to judge wind. It's one thing to start with those kinds of winds an another to be playing well and have it suddenly appear after 8 holes. At least that is my excuse. 😇

An update from my Men's Club round last weekend....

One side effect of joining this group is that I now have an official USGA hdcp.  I've never had one for various reasons, but knowing how its calculated, I've kept it in a spreadsheet.

I'm an accountant, and accounts know spreadsheets.  🙂

So....  the scores from the weekend have been entered, and my index has been updated.  I'm now a 6.1.  How lovely.  LOL

FWIW, my self calculated number from last year was 7.x.

Will be interesting seeing how this moves forward.  🙂
