Went out to walk nine holes this morning after it warmed up to 24* from an overnight low of 18*.  The ground is frozen so landing a ball on the green is a no-no!  However, even with the balls not carrying as far in the cold, the run-out on the fairway more than makes up for it.  The trick is judging what club and how to hit the approach shot.  I have to land the ball short of the green, but high shots don't work very well.  A low punch shot that lands about 20 feet short of the green will bounce and roll on most of the time.  The greens are frosty and very slow.  Not a day to shoot a score, but a fun day to visualize and try to pull off shots.

Played Oak Trail at Disney with my son today. Hit it okay and was around even par, but more important was the time I got to spend with my little guy. Watched him play well and he made a 30 footer on 9 to close out his round. Also hit his first drive over 200 yards today and a nice hybrid for 140 that set up a two putt par.

4 doubles, 2 pars, 1 bogey, and 2 birdies, and that was just the front 9.

2 doubles, 3 bogeys, and 4 pars on the back, total 86.

I take away that I played 12 holes at 2 over par, so with the numbers that I have there, 86 is actually a pretty good score.

Threw up a nice 77 at Magnolia in Disney from the tips on Friday. Fairly happy with the score considering the course was set up for some mini tour event in the afternoon and not playing short or to receptive pins. Drove it well and putted well but the short game was a bit rusty.

December golf is not one of my area's biggest selling points.

Bummer.

And the Patriots lost their second in a row, so double bummer.

May be time to start hibernating.

My Eagles did everything they could to lose that one in the 4th quarter. Chip has to go and go quickly.

Last two weekends I've played 3 times and all have been disasters. My driving and irons have seemingly gone to the birds over the past month and I don't know where to start. At one point I shanked 4 straight long irons.

Let's start with last Saturday which was a forced range session. Forced because the course was so jammed I couldn't have finished 9 before dark. So I went to the range because everything was so off. Driving was still awful although I got the irons to go where I wanted.

I figured out the irons for the most part, although I've had a few hiccups. It's my driving that has stunk. I can't hit one straight and hit everything with a hard slice off the inside of the face. I'll hit one or two good ones and think I've figure it out but it's the most frustrating thing. On top of that my chipping has regressed to the point of complete suckitude. My pitching though has been pretty good, as I hit two with the most spin I've ever had to a few feet twice. Added to that my putting has been off, although the past two days I figured it out by holding my wrist angle.

So to sum up: everything sucked, but now irons putting and  pitching is serviceable. My driving still is awful.

Can someone remind me again why we do this to ourselves?

Saturday, I committed Golf. it wasn't really a game, I didn't really play. I'm not sure how to describe what that activity I participated in was, but it certainly wasn't playing golf.

I had a par on 1, after pushing it right, bouncing it off a tree limb and landing short of the fairway. Followed by a second shot that also went right, this time coming to rest about 30 yards short, and 30 yards right, about a foot from the OB marker, with a tree interfering with any real backswing. Somehow managed to get the ball out, and onto the green with about a 30 foot put, going across a dead spot in the green. The putt, started out good, hit the dead spot, hopped around a lot, wiggled left, wiggled right, bounced and finally settled back into a line before rolling high and left, where it promptly rolled over a bit of debris on the green, turned right and fell into the cup.

I should have quit then. Ugliest par in history. Ugliest round of "golf" in recent memory. I should I have stayed in the clubhouse with a bloody mary or three and just donated my money to the group. It would have been warmer and less frustrating :).

Played great Saturday. Only played 13 holes bc I had to watch the SEC champ game (Roll Tide). Hit 12/13 greens and shot -3. Could have been better honestly.

Played mediocre Sunday. Only played 13 holes due to lack of daylight. Hit 11/13 greens and putted miserable. Shot +2 and only had 1 birdie.

Overall a decent weekend of golf I suppose. Hope everyone else's weather was half as good as mine was.

42/44 86 today.  Putting was off on the medium putts for the 1st time in a while today, however.  Two birds, only 4 pars, but lessons are really starting to take hold.

Gorgeous golf day.  Sunny and virtually no wind.  Only 52 at tee off, but quickly warmed to high 60s for rest of round.  See pic in the Most Recent Photo thread.

Really rained yesterday, over 0.5 inches which is a lot for us, but we are still over 2 inches short of our average rainfall of 7.1 inches.  The rain melted the little snow we had, and today it warmed up to 68*; the bad news... wind comes with the warm temps.  10-20mph with gusts to 35.  So what did I do?  I went out to my new course and played a quick nine holes after the gangsome.  I hit the ball pretty well but bogeyed the last 4 holes for a 41 (It's a par 37 on the front 9).  Didn't make any putts, but didn't 3-putt, so I call that a win for not playing much the last week or so.

The regular Tuesday game traveled to Rocky Point in Tampa, down by the Bay. They recently reopened after a major renovation. We had 28 players today. I came in third with a 41/41:82 and a skin. My driver was definitely on the money today. The weather was cool but beautiful.

How was the new Rocky Point Foz?

Finally for me today! Shot 38-35 73 which is about as good as it gets for me at Bayou. The swing wasn't perfect but it was clearly improved and I really rolled my rock. One of my partners made an ace and another one hole out from 124 for an eagle. It was a great day.

And winter is still over a week away.  Time to hunker down or be a snow bird.

I played today because it was sunny, no wind and 50*.  I did not hit the ball well off the tee, but approach shot were pretty good; at least for me.  I didn't keep score; it was one of those days where I hit a mulligan after a bad shot.  I hit a lot of mulligans.  Rain and wind for tomorrow, but I should be able to play at least nine dry holes before the heavy stuff comes down.

That's all the Northwest needs in more rain.  #10 fairway on my old course.

A very distressing day for me today, although not totally.  Absolutely perfect weather, light breeze, sunny, low seventies.  Started out on fire.  2 over par after 7, putting great, swing in sync.  However, resort group in front of us, so a bit slow play, lots of time between shots.  I haven't had a start like that in a couple of years.  Despite my admonitions to myself, I started trying to preserve the score.  Thinking while I'm getting ready to swing about not blowing it.  Well, of course, when you start thinking defensively, the feeling goes and the swing goes.  On the tee on eight, a fairly straightforward par 5, I'm thinking, par, par and I've got a 38.  Just don't do anything stupid.  Well, those thoughts generated a stay on the back foot, pull hook  drive into the hazard.  Double bogey.  Recovered I thought, when I hit a great drive on nine, short iron in from the fairway.  Just don't push it into the water I thought as I started my swing on the approach shot.  That defensive swing was chunked about fifty yards.  Defensive pitch chunked short left.  Double bogey.  Great drive on 10.  Chunk, double bogey.  Weak swing on par 3 11th, push into water, double bogey.  Struggled rest of way until fortunately a birdie, par finish for a 42-46, 88.  I got way out of my comfort zone, has happened to me before, shame on me, got to find a way to work through it.

Can't think about the hazards.  Your body reacts to what your mind is thinking, and it doesn't understand negatives.  Don't go means Go.  Focus on where you want the ball to go, trust your swing and execute.  Look down the road; not in the ditch.

I was going to click Like This not for your difficulties but for how well you illustrated them. I can definitely identify with all of it.

So next time we play, between shots we got to turn off all of that stuff and enjoy. Slow play is tough, plus riding carts, makes for too much idle time, and then the thinking starts. I think that is why Trevino talked so much, to keep his brain from engaging in all of that.

I look at this as "falling in the hole", where we get lost in our own game, worrying about the overall result of the round while we are still in the middle of it. Keep the brain engaged with something simple, like small talk, fiddle around with the bag, watch those quackers waddle around, anything but bad stuff. Easier said then done. I fall in the hole a lot.

Respectfully,
DHUCK WHOOKER

@Jax - of course no one else here has ever had an experience like yours.  I struggle with that all the time - after a string of rounds in the 80's I limped home for a 79 a couple of weeks back for the exact reasons you cited - I don't know how I made it to the house.  Last week I wasn't even the one keeping score, I just hit shots and got the ball in the hole.  I thought that I shot around 40 on the front and was shocked when the score keeper had me for a 38 - I had to check his numbers twice and they were right.  I stayed in the moment very nicely on the back too even when he announced to everyone that I was one under on the back as I stepped on the 17th tee.

I actually played a little better this weekend. Shot back to back 78's Friday and Saturday. I've been wanting to get my handicap down to mid-5's by year end but that ain't gonna happen. I have two more rounds scheduled this coming Friday and Saturday and then probably one more New Years Eve. I may at least dip just below 5 at best. Then it's on to 2016.

We had a strong low pressure system move into the area on Friday night. Saturday was breezy, today was a bit less, although there were plenty of gusts in the 20 mile per hour range. Needless to say with a balky driver Saturday was rough and today was slightly better. The flat stick was working yesterday, but today was meh. Missed a lot of makable putts the last few days.  I hit prob around 96 yesterday but a 45 on the back. Today shot 43 and was gunning for the first under 90 round in awhile before dark hit and my shots went to heck. On the plus side played last 18 holes with one ball, so my swing is coming around a lot better. The problem is still hitting off the heel of every club. Frustrating.

Also- side note we had what I call an illegal pin position. The pin was set on a side hill, of a recently cut and aerated green. All four of us hit putts that didn't stop until it was off the green. Two of us actually hit putts that went up and then came back to our feet. It was easily the worst pin position of the day, mostly because anything that didn't hit the hole would roll 20 plus feet. Just wondering ever play a green like that?

Yes. Many times Sportsfan. I've seen it mostly on muni's but every now and then around a club I used to belong too. It was on a par 3 two tier green and a couple of times some idiot would plant the cup right on the upslope/downslope. It was totally ridiculous and usually promptly reset. Also on this same green some worker would occasionally stick the pin about 8" onto the green. This particular hole has a carry over water with about three feet of grass before the actual putting surface. A front pin is already hard enough without shenanigans.
