How'd you play?

Bizarre rainout. Left my house to blue skies - there was a line of clouds by the course about 7 mikes to the North and West. Arrived in the parking lot as the rain started. It was pouring as I’m parked so I pulled up the weather which read 15 percent chance of rain. Radar showed a pop up storm though and it was growing fast all behind what we were getting moving our way. We called it after 20 minutes, it stopped as soon as my playing partners’ cars left.  When I got home, 15 minutes away, it was dry as a bone.

In retrospect we could probably have played but guests do not get rain checks. And it was brutally hot after the storm blew through.

40/36 for a +4 76 this morning, beating pretty solid and lengthy rain showers by only minutes.

Swing continues to feel better. A couple small things today and I think I could have challenged par as I had four birdies.

Made a huge mental mistake trying to muscle up a wedge that was instead bladed 30 yards behind the green and that led to a three-putt double bogey from 115 out in the middle of the fairway. Should have just grabbed more club and swung easy...

Is there really anything more frustrating than this? We have all done it but nothing feels worse.

Played 9 with my wife and another couple this am.  37 birdied 1 and 9 where I left an eagle putt about a foot short.  Double on the 2nd.  Hitting the ball on the middle of the face right now and it feels so good to be confident when I address the ball.

I suck at golf!!  I know many of you have had bad rounds, I always say that it happens... don't worry about it.  Well, c'mon guys!!  I need help!

What a weekend of golf.  Yes, I was sore.  I made some good swings and some really bad swings.  Shot 85 on Saturday and 86 today.  Been a long time since I had a weekend like this.  Today I hit for the golf cycle; par, bogey, double, triple... and I did it all on the first nine hole!!

I would take this coming week off, but my wife signed us up for a couples Red, White and Blue scramble tournament on July 4.  I sure am thankful that I am playing well.  🤣

... I have some shoulder and back issues (everyone our age is usually hurting to some degree) and I was struggling for almost an entire month and I was playing 4 to 5 times a week! Then I started the Cobra woods/hybrid/wedge no irons challenge and something clicked on the very first hole. I have shot 2 under, 2 under, 6 under and 2 under since then. It can be a crazy, maddening, an equally exciting and frustrating game. You will be just like these guys Kenny:

Was able to get 18 in both Saturday & Sunday.  A bit of a correction on driver setup & putting setup really helped.  I had been playing driver a bit back in the stance & trajectory lower, just wasn't right. Moved the ball position up even with inside left heel and struck the driver well, both days.  Weather was hot & fairways a bit firmer with no rain for a couple days, so ball traveled nice.
Putting has been an issue for over a month.  During a round last week golf buddy noticed I was hitting down on putts. Worked with him on practice green after round, moved ball up in stance & changed my grip by putting right index finger down the grip (ala Keopka). 5 birdies on Saturday, 3 birdies on Sunday.

Saturday - 38-33  - got off to slow start, but driver was great.
Sunday - 36-35  Couple of stupid bogeys & missed opportunities. But so much more comfortable and back on track with driver & putting. Just have to find some irons!

Semi how’d you play / CHA post. Friday charity scramble in conditions that indicated to me that it was not at the golf club of wentzville like I had been originally told it was hosted at again.  No no… this was clearly being hosted on the surface of the sun.

heat index north of 110* at 530 when we finished.  Meaning it was probably hotter during play.

given conditions we did manage -4 so I’ll take it.

Dad did receive his Xmas 3w early and he was to say the least, shocked.  Also really happy.  If he could have putted with this thing I think he would have.

He struck it very well and gave him the missing range he needed between driver and his 3h.

Played Goshen Plantation outside of the city limits of Augusta, GA. The address is technically Augusta, but it's 25 minutes away. Met the owner, Spike Kelley, who played sparingly on the PGA tour, and won the Buick Open in 1975. He also happened to be a 2 time runner up of a small pro tournament at a course I worked at in college, in the town next to wear I grew up. Small world. I teed off on 1, then watched this 75 year old man get on a fairway mower and start working. Honestly, I'm jealous and miss the days of cutting grass on maintenance crews.

Tale of 2 nines, score wise. Actually hit the ball pretty well on an unfamiliar course. Par 5's were in the 500 range, so definitely reachable, if I hit the fairway. I have a 2 way miss, and my one thing I can't fix is my lack of turning hips. I like to "slide, slide, slippity slide", as Coolio would say. Pull hooks or push cuts. Even trying to his a slice doesn't work. Anyway. putting and chipping was good. zero 3 jacks. some up and downs. I actually hit 55% of greens and 50% of fairways. The fairways surprises me, since I remember my bad misses. 31 total putts, and one chip in. I wasn't close to pins, so 31 putts was good for me.

Total score was 77, course net of 68 from the blues, which play about 6700-6800 yards. Score wasn't lowest this year, but probably the best given the course/slope ratings.

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

... LOL, yea they gave it a Spinal Tap - 11. Humidity is 17% which is high for the desert but upwards of 60% is just brutal and that round must have been tough to even finish. I probably couldn't drink enough water to combat the sweat loss. Hottest "feeling" I ever played wasn't the 117* here (I will never do that again) but 101* at Myrtle with something like 80% humidity. I had played about 4 holes when the ranger came up and told me the coure was closing and only 2 people were on the course, so please park my cart next to the barn and drop my key in the slot when I finished playing. I made it to #7 and was sweating so bad I couldn't hold onto my clubs let alone just being to dammed hit. Only time I have ever left the course before even finishing 9 holes.

Well well well.

Played my second round with my "new swing" today and... SHOT MY BEST ROUND OF THE YEAR SO FAR!

So far, I am overjoyed by my "new swing". Let's hope that I can keep building on this experience.

The honeymoon continues. Shot 76 (albeit on a par 70 course this time) and tied a personal best!

I was +5 after 6 holes and missed 2 par putts of less than 2' so I didn't have any idea of greatness by then... I turned on the jets and shot par on the next 11 holes (1 birdie + 1 bogey). I missed the 5' par putt on the 18th hole to shoot 35 on the back-nine.

I am starting to be a bit stressed out as I don't think that this performance rate is sustainable for me ahah. I'll make sure to enjoy it while it lasts.

No you don't. It's one bad round. Everyone has a bad day now and then. It'll pass. Golf is not a game that you always "win". Even the pros hit bad shots. You'll be back!

No!  It was two bad rounds, and I felt better on Sunday than I did on Saturday and shot one stroke worse!!

Now I have to play in a tournament tomorrow after missing my course handicap by 8 shots.  I think I'll have fish for dinner.  🤣

45/53 for a 98. Tale of 2 nines as you can see. Front 9 I was driving the ball well and had some decent approaches. Back 9 my driver swing decided to take an early vacation for the 4th and that ended up leading to 4 doubles right in a row. Even more frustrating was putting myself in good position for a birdie or par, and ending up with a bogey.

Still, I was out there with my son and we were paired up with another father/son combo. It was sweltering but fun watching my son hit 270 yard baby draws, until his driver swing decided to desert him too. It's a good thing we both have a lot of balls stocked up in our closets!

I will say that my off-season work has been showing some dividends - while my driver may not be bombs away, my iron distance has definitely seen a marked increase so I've got to adjust for that. I've always aimed for the middle or rear yardage and when I did that today, I was long every time. Same thing was happening during my round on Friday as well.

45/53 for a 98. Tale of 3 nines as you can see. Front 9 I was driving the ball well and had some decent approaches. Back 9 my driver swing decided to take an early vacation for the 4th and that ended up leading to 4 doubles right in a row. Even more frustrating was putting myself in good position for a birdie or par, and ending up with a bogey.

OK...  still waiting to hear about the 3rd nine.  😃

shot a +3, 74, and lost... All due to a doggone double on 17 after a monster drive. Chunked 2 , chipped long, and lipped the bogie. And lost by one... man that sucks.

Safe and same tomorrow, my fellow spies

Okay, 113F with some light wind is hot... I don't care what the locals say 🫠.  I made my 2 quart water jug up with ice and 2 packs of Propel to take in the golf cart and drank like a fish all the way through the turn. I refilled with more ice and finsihed it off on the par 3 #17.  Not sure to what extent the electrolytes helped vs. just guzzling water but I felt just okay at the finish.  They say I need to get aclimated to lizard golf but I'm not sure I want to be playing in temps north of 110F...dry as a popcorn fart or not.  I had a mild heat exhaustion episode while in MT cutting wood at our woodbank and they say once you've had that you are more susceptible.

I couldn't get the hat trick done for 3 consecutive sub 80 rounds; ending with a 43/41.  Carls Golfland excuses #32 (it was too hot) and #79 (sweat kept dripping in my eyes) were the culprits 😁.  The rest of the rounds this week are all early tee times 👍.

Yeah I've that read also - plz be careful!!

Do you have those chilly towels that you dampen and then they evaporative cool? I'd imagine you'd have to do a lot of re-dampening there but they can help.

Forgot to add this pic from yesterday's 7 hole golf adventure...

20230703_171648.jpg.917daa0fc3aeeb5f2c1eacf5945a959e.jpg

This is #9 approach on a short straightish par 4 with a small pond in front of a sloped green .. a hole which I, of course, have habitually f***ed up on...

Hit 4H off the tee to the right side of the fairway, just into the light rough, to just over a 100 yd layup to the front flag .. took a nice, smooth swipe with the PW and landed the ball about 10 feet right and maybe half a foot below the pin!

Yeah missed the birdie putt but still made a pretty good putt for an easy tap in par, so happy with how I played that hole that day!
