Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a mid level golfer. I was on one of those streaks when everything was coming together and… not happening.

I played a very tough course (Pine Lakes) a tee back from where I should have on Friday, but that’s where the other 51 were playing from, so it is what it is. I didn’t play or score terribly (89) for a player of my level, but there were a few alarming signs.

I shanked to pitch shots from inside 25 yards, hit three awful drives (2 pop ups and another one was topped about 20 yards into the water, which I never do) and my putting from inside 5 feet was not good. The biggest concern was it being the first round in quite a while that I wasn’t happy with my iron play.

I followed that up on Saturday with an even worse day of ball striking on another tough course (Barefoot Love Course) mostly terrible ball striking throughout the bag (except for wedges, which were really good), and 3(!) missed putts inside 3 feet, not to mention hitting the wrong ball after my best drive of the day. 🙄 I did manage to stick my wedge 8 feet away and make a 5 on the hole, even with the two stroke penalty however. Add it all up and it was a 92, and my second day in a row of finishing out of the money.

My excuses and rationalizations are the brutal 100* plus heat indexes both days, and my stupidity for playing back to back days in it, especially after how much I was affected by it on Friday. I tried to hydrate all Friday night and throughout Saturdays round, but I was just drained.

C’est la vie. 🤷‍♂️

Tough weekend!  You know it will be better next time.   I Love the Love course; it's been a long time since I played it.

I know there are several reasons for shanking shots; I have gone through periods in the past that made me want to quit golf.  It always seemed that my shank always results in a much worse lie than before the shot.  My problem then was I didn't understand what caused them.

My recent swing changes has mostly eliminated them, but the can pop up... even on the practice pitching area.  For me it a matter of not rotating through the shot.  Since it's not a full swing, I sometimes don't rotate enough thinking that it will be easier to control the shot if I don't.  What that does is promote an OTT move through the ball and a shank.  When I do it, I say "Idiot, rotate"... and I'm fine after that.  It happens on course too, but usually late in a round when I start to get tired and I don't rotate as much as did earlier.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

9 holes today, was all out of sorts. Drove the ball well 5/6 FWs 2/9 gir 18 putts.

Par on #1 and a perfect 2i from the tee on #2 that's when I had 175y in with wind in my face. Smashed my 4h and the wind died down as I hit it. Bye bye. That led to triple bogey and I never really got my mind back in it. Finished +12, though it felt I played better than that.

Yeah, that makes sense Kenny. I’ve been pretty good with my wedges recently. I probably got lazy, and like you said, I didn’t rotate.

Thankfully it didn’t happen the rest of that round or again on Saturday, but now I’ll know to commit fully to the shot… thanks for posting what you did, I appreciate it.. 👍

A good and bad 81.

Started 5 over through 4. Made a good par on 5 which lead to a birdie then par stretch before another 3 hole stretch of 4 over. It was a very up and down round. The driver was working really well outside of 1 bad swing and 1 bad bounce which lead to hazard balls.

All in all I had 2 birdies, 8 pars, 3 doubles and 5 bogies.

There was a little pace of play frustration which I will fully attribute to 2 bad shots. However a good sandsave and drained putt from off the green negated that with some good luck.

Was a fun round and feels so good to have driver sorted.

Next up is leaving that in the bag for practice and doing a lot more iron and approach practice.

Played a solo round in the rain and got to start on the back-nine for the first time. Played from the tips as I knew that it couldn’t count toward my GHIN. Shot a relatively cool 88.

I played decent but blew a tire out on one of the easier par 5s where I shot 10 and only incurred a single penalty stroke in the process. I simply wasn’t able to chip and get the ball on the green😂. I also 3-putted on 3 consecutive holes and on the 3rd one, I realized that the ball had been starting on a random line for the last dew putts due to sand being on the ball itself and on the putter’s face. I now get with Brooke Koepka obsessively wipes his putter’s face prior to addressing a putt.

My swing feels are kicking in. SG below based on 20 handicap. Putting has still been a struggle, although today felt much better than what it was. Had a short game duff that I tried to shut the face to bump and run and instead I dug in. Should have just played my stock chip as I could have easily parred that hole (number 4). If I can cut out these double bogies I would be in much better shape. Also had some visitors on the course with me today.

Funny you say that... thats exactly how I warm up. Drivers, 6-7 irons, and some putts. But today I made it through the "gauntlet" (what we call the first 3 holes) unscathed.

Shot great today, up until a stupid double on 12. Absolutely crushed a drive right up to the edge of the baranca, (sp?), with 75 to the hole, then chunked the 58* right into the junk. So stupid... then reloaded and threw on up right next to the pin. And missed the tap in bogie... And this after a tough bounce resulted in a bogie on the par 3 hole right before it.

So, combined with my previous +2, I was now at +5, just like that! Finished at +6, so an ok day, after a great start.. meh.....golf....

Owen and I walked the front nine at River Heights today.  It's the first of hopefully several attempts to put a decent round together for the Iron Only Cobra Challenge.  I say "hopefully" because this round was a bit of a disaster.  But not really for the obvious reasons.

I've got only got five clubs available to me for the challenge this week:  the Aerojet set 7i, 8i, 9, PW, GW, plus the putter.  And despite my knowing better, I had a tendency to try to step on the gas on my tee shots in an attempt to make up some distance.  My head knew it was dumb but my heart seemed to take over, telling the rest of my body, "Crush it!"  This lead to a lot of low hooks creeping back into my game.

Hole 1:  Hooked a 7 into the nearby trees, then hooked another one across the adjacent fairway.  Followed up with a beautiful GW, then a two putt for bogey.

Hole 2:  Hooked a 7 into the tree line, then hit a decent PW that stopped just past the end of the fairway but before the river.  Hit an extremely-toed GW that went hard right and just past the green.  Followed that with a really good GW chip to about five feet from the flag, which I managed to three putt.

Hole 3 is a 526 yard par five.  Circuitously found myself behind the green for my fifth shot.  Bladed my GW off the front, then bladed my PW back off the back.  Solid putt from behind the green but two more putts on the green before I holed it.

I thinned my 7 iron on the long par 3 just off the back of the green.  Hit a great shot with my putter pin high about four feet to the right.  Missed what should have been a great par save and settled for bogey.

On five I wound up with a long putt that lagged within four feet, then again missed the gimme.

On six I couldn't clear the forced carry so I had to take a drop.  From about 180 yards out I pulled my 8 iron, played for the hook and thinned the heck out of it, bouncing off the green and winding up 196 yards from where I started.  My 7 wood doesn't usually go this far!

Hole 7 is a short par three.  I would describe it as my nemesis hole, but when you're as bad as I am, they're all nemesis holes.  I put my tee shot on the green for the first time all year, then two putt for my only par of the day.

Hole 8 is an uphill par four.  I had a really long putt for par which I left about six feet away.  And then I three-putted that last six feet.

On nine I hit a couple of ugly-but-effective irons leaving me on the fringe and walked away with a bogey.

So anyway, while my irons weren't great, they were definitely manageable.  It was my putting that was ghastly.  I counted eight putts inside five feet that I should have made.  Add in the circus around the green on hole three, and I could have had a really decent round.  Instead, I'm sitting here, salty and pondering what-ifs.  Owen didn't keep score but he had at least four pars and played well.  I wound up with a +17 53.

... While this is a competition in theory, it is really 6 guys getting a full bag of Cobra equipment and week to week describing their play with the different clubs. I imagine someone looking at my (and Tom's) review for some insight is a completely different audience than those looking at you and Jnoble's reviews. Of course the same for Freddie and Shanks. I think a high index player looking at potentially buying Cobra clubs can identify with your struggles and I think that is infinitely more valuable than putting up a competitive score. So if you don't mind my advice, just go play and have fun and let everyone know how the clubs performed for you in any given challenge. In the end we all want to play well, but nobody really cares about our scores but us.

PS. I warned you about not trying to hit your irons farther! 😉

I was told at the beginning of this season that getting the doubles under control is the biggest step to consistently breaking 90. Since breaking into the 80s was my goal this season, I’ve tried to focus on keeping the doubles to an absolute minimum. For me, it’s been about taking the smart shot, not necessarily the aggressive shot, to keep those doubles away from my scorecard.

Totally. It actually is what I am doing for the most part. Putting has just killed me from breaking 90 on a combined 18 (I only do nine hole rounds)

Terrible, just terrible.  Played my first round in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area today.  I had not played in about three weeks, so I knew it was not going to be pretty, but I sure did not anticipate playing as poorly as I did today.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Paul, I'm sure you will turn it around.  Enjoy Pinehurst!  Very envious.

Totally. It actually is what I am doing for the most part. Putting has just killed me from breaking 90 on a combined 18 (I only do nine hole rounds)

I hear that. Putting has been tough on my lately as well. Hopefully we both find a solution soon.

I think today’s round been the first game of my summer. I’m on holiday, so I’m off playing at a local club’s pay-and-play—six holes of par 3/4, so I played 12 holes.

The first six started out with a birdie and a few pars, followed by a total collapse on the last two.

The last six were better, as in more consistent, with pars and bogeys, and I got caught in a downpour.

Shot 41 on Monday and woke up Tuesday and my left shoulder was killing me. I have a Dr. Appointment 10:30 this morning, I have been alternating hot and cold and it is a lot better today but I am not golfing the rest of the week. My golf trip to olgalbay is next Tuesday and I don't want to take a chance and hurt it more and miss this trip. Hopefully everyone has a wonderful day.

I Started to use Shot Scope to track my progress after an lesson down in FL that was more of an adjustment to my alignment and how I was hitting the ball.
Of course these types of adjustment will take some time to get into muscle memory and become the new norm.

But I have seen already some improvement, specially in my alignment which I have struggle for a long time. I started to hit more green because of the slight adjustment.

Getting true yardages on my clubs has help me get back to where I need to be , not what I was thinking they were. Hence missing greens short because I was not really carrying the true distance.

Other adjustment made was to my putter, I have the new Envroll Duo 5.2 with the short slant hosel. Well as it turns out this particular model shows the face slightly open at address which was bothering the hell out me. Went to the my local Golf Store and they were able to adjust the hosel to be more square at address. Went to practice this morning and i was no longer missing right.

Going to play later this afternoon, lets see if it all comes together now.

Felt great yesterday went out and shot a +2  solo on a local par 3 course should have been even but i missed 2 that were roughly 3 feet from the whole on lip outs but the greens were fast and were breaking hard so I'm proud of my score

Got out and played 18 holes of practice best shot in preparation for a two person best shot tournament this Sunday. Started out hot with a tap in birdie, then hit a bit of a rough patch. Played the first 9 in 2-under. Then turned around and did the same thing on the back. The good news is we had a lot of opportunities, we just missed a few putts.

Driver started off hot and then went ice cold. Like Antarctica level cold. Hoping to get out and work on my driver before the tournament. Struggling with a right Miss right now, so need to get the straightened out. Hoping to post 8-10 under in the tournament, so a lot of improvement needed!

Finally a day where it all came together. Except for a dumb double on 5, and a really long lake shot on 6, everything worked. Speed Swing Golf has given me at least 20 on drives, and irons are a club longer, so combined its like 3 clubs easier. Only missed 2 greens in reg, and no 3 putts.

4 of the 6 birdies were less than 2 feet. Irons were more than deadly, and driver was a beast.

Days like today make the endless work worth it...
