How'd you play?

A tale of two very different rounds. I’m a 15.5, played a short 18 holes course with a slope of 100 I think, on Saturday. Nothing felt correct and was a struggle. Ended with a 97. Yesterday played my normal course with a slope rating of 128 and I shot an 84. I even called it after the Saturday round that I’d shot low 80’s on Sunday. This is why golf is so frustrating and yet keeps me returning.

Played my first round using the Shot Scope X5 with club tracking.

I was eager to put some numbers on my strokes gained (or more like strokes lost🥲) on different areas of my game and I’m glad to see that my impressions are confirmed: My game off-the-tee ruins my life and my putting is average at the very best.

It doesn’t help that it wasn’t a good game at all. Shot 87(+15) with 5/14 FIR, 6/18 GIR, 36 putts and 6 penalty strokes (4 incurred off the tee).

I use the 5 handicap players’ pool as a baseline comparison. I figured that if I want to improve, I must take example on what better players than myself do.

Unsurprisingly, tee shots and putting have the worst strokes gained whereas approach shots and shots around the green are decent. Without the 4 penalties incurred off the tee, the strokes gained would have been decent so there’s the silver lining… As for putting, I couldn’t hole a single putt outside 5’ despite hitting the cup every single time so there’s that…

Looking forward to gathering more extensive data with Shot Scope. So far, I’m completely satisfied with the switch from Garmin.

It turned into a beautiful day on the lower eastern shore for some golf at my favorite course located just outside Ocean City, MD, Rum Pointe.  Today we had a group of 12 friends from our college days which is now 40 years ago.  We started getting together for a round of golf 37 years ago and haven't missed a year yet.  There were a couple years the golf got rained out and bowling was substituted.  In 2000 we started going to OC, MD using a golf package for a 2 - 3 rounds.  We get between 12 and 16 guys each year that are able to play some or all of the rounds.  It's interesting that over all that time and as our group ages into the 60's our scores are pretty consistent with what we were shooting 20 years ago.  I had my best score ever at Rum Pointe today, a 74, in a 1 - 2 club wind off the bay.

Well a golf day to remember happened yesterday (10/15)....allow me to explain:

Our tee time was at 1pm, and at a course we had never played. It was located in the mountains of North Central Pennsylvania, a track called Eagle's Ridge. It was a dreary drive with rain most of the way. Rain had pelted the area heavily the day before. The sun peeked through occasionally as I sped down the twisty roadway. With about 20 minutes until my arrival my buddy called me..."I just got here and I got bad news and I got good news." I paused with bated breathe....what is the bad news? "The course is closed." I half expected that but I was still waiting for the good news...."I talked to the course pro, he said he forgot to notify us but we can play the course at no cost if we are willing to walk it." Alright!!!

I was stoked. Until I stepped on the first tee box....and it dawned on me, this course is in the mountains and the 1st green was at least 80 ft above our approach shots. So what did we do? We hiked 8 miles over 18 holes with hundreds of feet in elevation changes, magnificent views, and played as many balls as we could handle. Closest to the hole over 5 shots? Sure! Want to see if you can hit the fairway again? Go for it. It was marvelous.

Of course we had all the challenges..., it was 48-50 degrees, windy 10-19mph, rainy half the time, and our feet hurt something fierce after 9 holes (note golf shoes are not hiking boots). One hole the fairway was right next to the driving range so literally range balls were everywhere. Which made it challenging for my buddy to find his yellow chromesoft! We had some great hits and plenty of not so great hits (I hit a tee marker on the tee box ahead of us and it flipped into the air and stuck right back in the ground 10 feet away) but it was great. I have no idea what my score was because we didn't keep score due to some technical issues. We just played. I got to use the Sub70 008 mallet that I am testing for MGS and it felt awesome. More on that in my review thread.

Here are a couple of pics and one video. So yeah, this was a round I just had to share with you all.

looks like a beautiful and as you say hilly course, not too much rain as I see the bunkers aren't full of water so that is good... what a great day for you.

Hate Golf at the moment. 🤬 The last 4 rounds have been brutal scoring , 85, 85, 81, 94.  Seem like I couldn't put consecutive swings together on any given hole.  No rhyme or reason. I haven't change anything on my swing, if anything is feels more consistent (weird).  But those scores escalate quickly.  Probably best to take a break this weekend and let the clubs rest, maybe they are fatigue.

Shot a 9 over today but should have been a few strokes lower.  Front 9 I shot 2 over and the back was 7 with 2 doubles that were a lost ball and 3 terrible shots on a par 4 and a lip out for Bogey.

The driver was working pretty well but did have a couple holes I went back to a small slice.  I need to quit firing a flag sticks and hit middle of the green.  I ended up just off the green on way to many holes.

Good morning spy's

A definite Jekyll and Hyde day on the links yesterday.

Played impeccably for the 1st 10 holes, 8 pars 2 birdies, that was the good part.

Finished 6 over the next 8 holes for a smooth 76.

Am trying to take the good and focus on that, and learn from the bad. The usual critique meathod...

Won't play again now until Monday so will stew on this over the weekend.

Heyo!

Got in a round this morning. Yep, it's autumn. 20 mph wind with occasional 38 mph gusts (that can't be right, can it?). But I can't really hide behind it. I blew up on a few holes. The good news is, I am improving my chipping skills with my 7i, 9i and PW. That's what happens when I can't it the green, so clearly I need to work on my short game.

Played Applewood near Augusta georgia, shot 84. 42 on both 9s. Greens were slower than I like, left 3 putts an inch short for par on the back nine really frustrating. Hopefully the course we play tomorrow has faster greens. Can't complain about the weather 73 and sunny beats the hell out of 53 and rain back home.

Played a quick back 9 this morning and shot a 39.  I had a great birdie chance on the 10th and lipped out.  I then proceeded to bogey the next 3 holes.  Made a great drive on a short par 4 and chipped to 2ft and made my birdie putt.  And then got to my least favorite hole and made another bogey.  Long uphill par 5 that slopes right and anything that goes right falls off.  Made par on the final 2 holes with a great shot at the par 3 18th that left me with a 10ft birdie putt that I left about 4 inches short.

Heading back out this afternoon with a couple friends that called mid round this morning.  Back at the home office to knock out some work so I can go play.

I just gotta share this… if you’re in a market for wedges, take a look at the Jaws raw black from Callaway, I got the graphite shafts. They’re sooo nice.

your mileage may vary depending on your driving habits but….

anyways could only get 9 in this morning due to some tournament and there was a reallllly heavy fog as well, but since I know the course, I was still able to score pretty cleanly, and had I been able to see the flags, might have saved a stroke or so.

also found a Bridgestone tour BX, and I absolutely LOVED it, so much I ordered 2 doz to see if I really do love them that much. Also bought some pro V’s, and will do a little unofficial ball testing

Sooo....

Today was almost a dopleganger to my round on Wednesday except I kept it together on the back nine, 36-37-73

10 fairways, 14 greens, 32 putts.

My real takeaway was with my Takomo 301 MB's. My takeaway from the last few rounds was I was not getting the most out of the kick point on the KBS light stiff shafts, so I tried the Gene Littler rhythm as opposed to the George Knudsen swing (yes I am old) and it worked.

So I will keep working on a longer smoother swing the irons and see if I can groove that in.

I hit a nice wedge in on 1, beautiful 5 iron in on 3, 9 iron on the screws on 5, 5 iron on 8, 5 iron on 11, great 5 iron on 14, 6 iron on 15, 8 iron on 17 and a PW on 18.

Only miss hit a couple of irons, way better than Wednesday.

Looking forward to Monay's round, have a great weekend everyone...

Played my round this afternoon with my normal group and shot a great front 9 with 2 over....  would have been great with this mornings back 9 of 3 over. Unfortunately the back 9 this afternoon was ugly. I shot 9 over on the back 9.... yes I bogied every hole.

At least there is tomorrow's round. I left a few birdie opportunities on the front 9.

Alright, getting some time to elaborate on my round a bit more today at Nakoma GC in Madison, WI. Got to play the front 9 with my uncle and aunt, and then it was just my uncle and I on the back. Started things off with a FIR right off the bat on hole one, then promptly shanked my approach. Chipped on for a two putt bogey. The rest of the front was largely forgettable save for the Par 3 4th, where we were faced with a 160 yard tee shot dead into a strong wind. Pulled my 6 iron, normally a 180-190 club, and flushed it. Landed just off the fringe and rebounded down to the green. Sank a 9’ putt for bird! Hole 9 was a hard dogleg left that required landing in the right half of the fairway to not be blocked off from the green. Hit a toe-y 200 yard draw that left me with about 140ish to the pin, and was again dead into the wind. Went two clubs up and pulled 7 iron, flushed it but got all the way to the back of the green on the fringe. 8 would have been enough, but it was a good miss. These greens were FAST, and I ran well past the hole on my lag attempt, and needed two more putts to finish.

Started the back 9 with a nice draw off the tee but again dead into a head wind and it killed my distance. Only got 230 out of what felt like a good tee shot. Didn’t think enough about the wind on my approach and proceeded to flush, and I mean FLUSH, a 6 iron that was drawing right to the pin. Wind had other ideas and kept me short. Botched chip lead to a three putt. Abysmal 6/6/8 to start the back and I was worried breaking 100 was escaping me.

Fast forward to 16, and we’ve got a par 5/3/5 finish. Managed to hit a great drive on 16 and got lucky with a thinned tee shot on the 3, and parred both holes. Stepping up to 18, hit an 273 yard draw to left middle fairway and was feeling really good. Pulled 7 wood and hit a solid shot, but missed right of the green and in the rough. I wish I would have taken a picture because it seemed as thick as what you see on tour. The ball was deep in some grass. Got too aggressive with my 60° and ended up at the back of the green which was tiered, needing to two putt to save par. Got my lag to two feet ‼️and tapped in to save it! Found out after my round the lag was from ‼️ 70’ ‼️via arccos. Was an amazing finish and got in with a gross 95/net 73. Was a beautiful fall day (minus the wind) and an awesome first time playing that course. Enjoy some photos I took along the way!

Today's round was interesting. Front 9 I struggled.  Every approach shot was short of the green and chipping wasn't great. Ended up 6 over on the front. Back 9 started off rough with 3 bogeys and then something clicked. 13th is a par 3 190yds and knocked it stiff to 3ft.  Went on to birdie the next 3 holes.  17, I cranked a great drive that left me 120yds out and stuck my next shot to 4ft and lipped out my birdie putt.  Made par on the 18th for an even finish back 9.  Overall a good round but wish the entire 18 was as good as the back 9.

Shot 89 in the wind and overcast Minnesota fall. Made 2 birdies and not much else. Struck the ball well but had two holes where I lost two balls 🤦‍♂️. So it goes.
