How'd you play?

Played yesterday for the first time in a week and had no expectations, but had a plan - relax, no overswinging, hold the face longer through the swing and take the extra club.

Past three months I've been doing TheStack System speed training and have learned a lot. Even with taking time off from actually playing, doing a couple of TheStack sessions a week, keeps the body in a muscle memory mode.

Overall, I was pleased with the results of the round. Unfortunately, I continue to miss par 3 greens.  Missed 2 par 3 greens on the front, both led to bogeys.  But had two birdies to come out even on the front.

Short game was very good on the back, didn't hit approach shots close to hole - average about 20-24 feet, again, no expectations. But it lead to a lot of 2 putt pars. One good pitch shot led to a birdie, the only on the back, however, no bogeys.

Wind really picked up by the 15th hole and into the face 14 thru 17. 18th hole was dead downwind. We could see the flag, across the pond on the 18th green and it was bending. My golf buddies dared me to hit driver, 260 carry over water, so I hit driver. It was dead downwind. Hit a nice high draw, carried the water, just missed the greenside bunker and stopped on the green, over 84 feet from pin.  My only 3 putt of the day! 🤣

It was a good round, under challenging conditions & trying to stay composed & positive.  Very pleased.

Walked 9 holes yesterday and I’m glad I did. It was a beautiful day in southern Michigan! I also played pretty well and figured out why I was pull hooking my drives during the previous round. It had to do with my setup being too relaxed making my grip too strong.
Anyway, shot a 4 over 40. Below are my stats:

Fairways: 3/7

GIR: 1/9

Putts: 14

My wedges are where I need improvement. On 4 holes I missed the green from inside 70 yards. I need to figure out a way to dial my wedges in over this winter! I’m off to meet some friends at the local simulator in a few minutes and maybe I can see if I can utilize the sim to help with wedges this offseason.

Had a really good time on the course today. Eleven fairways hit, 33 putts, and one birdie. I have been working on my wedges using the Dave Peltz Short Game Bible method. Today three separate times I looked at my GPS, then checked my distance list for all 4 wedges, selected the appropriate wedge for the specified distance, executed the shot and was rewarded with the ball landing on the green where I wanted it to "like a butterfly with sore feet". That was way cool!

Had a lot of fun at the local simulator last night. It’s open 24/7, you just book a time-slot online and you get a code to unlock the bay. You can bring your own food and drinks and it was just a nice time. We played 2v2 best ball match play at PEBBLE BEACH and it ended all-square, which was kind of a let down. We didn’t have time to do any playoff so we’ll have to run it back again another time.
On Pebble Beach #7 I hit a slight draw right at the pin and I thought it was going to have a chance, but it ended up 7ft short of the pin.

Walked 9 yesterday afternoon and it was not a good ball striking round with a score of 48. Didn’t hit a single fairway and was doing a superb job of getting myself behind trees to force punch outs or lateral shots to get back in the fairway. Poor second and third shots missing the greens and then barely getting onto the greens with chipping was leading to two putting for bogey or double bogey. The highlight of my round was 15 putts which I was happy about. Quite the difference from Thursday’s 9 where everything seemed to be clicking just right.

Went out to play 9 today since I have a party to attend this evening and it is going to be raining tomorrow.   Played horrible which is to be expected since I really haven't hit many balls in the last month and a half.    Short game (100 and in) were pretty terrible and I had no feel for distance and multi chipped quite a few times.  Putting was pretty good though since I have been hitting lots of putts due to testing the Sacks Parente putters.

Really need to get to the short game area to hit some shots.

I played this afternoon and my playing partner was recovering from some shoulder issue and I am working on a new swing so we played from the reds today.  I didn't keep score and was more focused on my swing.

I would say there was some great shots and plenty of frustrating shots but overall pleased to see some progress.  I have decided that during the week, I will be minimizing my on course play and focusing on the range to dial in the swing changes.

Was able to get out and played with 2 of our regular group at St. Clair Shores Golf Club, not too far from home.

It is a city owned municipal course that is always in good condition, just not a real long course.

Plays about 6000 yards, and a Par 70 with 2 par 5's, 4 par 3's, and 12 par 4's. The par 5's average a little over 500 yards, the par 3's all were 175 - 186 yards, and the par 4's average about 365 yards.

Hit 14 of 14 fairways, but a big disclosure is I only hit driver off the tee on 4 holes total. Mostly used 3 wood, or 19 degree utility to keep it in play.

Only missed 4 greens and ended up with a 74 with 35 putts.

Weather was cloudy, cool, about 40 when we started, warmed up to 49 in the afternoon, but wind also increased as the day moved along.

Very happy to be able to get out after only being able to practice at the range the past month, but still seem to have kept almost all of the good parts of my game intact.

That's a great round, Robert and I'm glad to hear you're able to get out in December to play.

Thanks Jason, the "lack of course difficulty" also contributed to the good score. All holes are pretty straightforward, and taking any trouble in play off the tee here is key to scoring.

Went out to Stone Canyon GC yesterday (White tees, 68.5/129, 5852yds) for an early-round. Knew it was going to be brisk and windy (42F/10mph winds) with a water-logged course, but we didn't expect it to rain the whole round lol.
The front 9 went pretty well, I was striking the ball alright and managed to not lose my ball for a 48. Was only misting on us then, and later would we find out would be the warmest part of our round.
Once we got through hole 10, the weather shifted getting colder with heavier precipitation. Was definitely getting tougher, but I managed to keep spirits high until about hole 15 when my pants were starting to get soaked through from the rain. Things fell apart here, and I was just mentally ready to be out of the weather. Was looking at 106 coming into hole 17, and that's when I stopped keeping score. Hindsight is 20/20, but I should just start wearing my rain pants this time of year anyways (shoes stayed perfectly dry though!). Picture is of hole 10, and it is a great course will have to come back (Kudos Greg! 🦈)

Went to the simulator earlier this morning for some redemption. Played two rounds:

  • Lago Mar CC (68.1/126, 5803yds) - 96 (47 front, 48 back)
  • Sea Island Seaside (69.2/129, 5980yds) 103 (50 front, 53 back)

Re-hitting and drops from the tee hurt me quite a bit (more at Seaside), but feeling good about it. Have my Trackman HCP down to 18.2.

A somewhat frigid start to my round sunday.  The wind was pretty relentless early and never really let up.  Fortunately once we got down below the tree line it got much nicer and the sun also came out early on and stayed out.

What wasnt frigid was my driving.  Now for my hcp ~16-17, Im ok on distance.  This course was so wet and also it being cold and windy, I pulled a 232yd average drive out of my ass.  So this was almost all just carry as there was ZERO roll all day long.  Ignore what the app says for average one went way left and got stuck in a crack lol.

That's a good perspective to have, 4 months ago I was just wishing I could be out on the course. To be able to get out and play now if truly a blessing and I'm thankful for it. There's still a bit of pain and it makes me a little cautious while swinging, but I'll take that any day over not being able to get out.

If it'd been an older Craftsman, we'd still be down and that wrench probably been in good shape. Good thing I picked up a cheap one from Walmart to throw in there, it's so mangled they can't get fingerprints.

Playing in the cold wind and rain just plain stinks. When I lived in Alaska down on the Kenai peninsula if you didn't play in the rain you didn't play. A warm day in the rain was 60 degrees. I always walked and my raingear kept the rain out and the sweat in. So finishing the round we were always cold, wet, clammy. Here in Mesa I will still play the occasional round in the rain. And like today for your round, BallsLeon, once I start getting cold from the wet my game augers in. Then all I am looking for is dry socks and heat!

My round today was a stellar effort in mediocrity. Stayed in the short grass off of my drives?? Well yeah, mostly. Hit the green in regulation?? Yeah, but the greens were hard and fast so I had issues holding them. When I did stay on the green my first putt was normally in the 40 to 60 foot range. Only two three putts though. Greens were way faster this week than last week. Rolling down a fairly steep hill I had a 5 footer. My back swing on my putter was less than 2 inches. The ball started rolling down the hill did a slight direction change (an old ball dent I didn't see) and kept on rolling. Right past the cup. Missed it by the width of a dime and when it stopped rolling I had a 12 foot comebacker. Made the putt for bogie. Yep mediocrity ruled the day.

I got out this morning in the light drizzle wearing the Galway Bay rain gear and played from the front tees only playing irons and had a great round!  I wish the greens were better because it could have been a phenomenal round!  I missed so many putts by inches.

Only missed 2 fairways and had 14/18 GIR.  I am happy with the progress of swing changes and shooting even par on the day was the bonus.

Of course handicap is a +1 from these tees but I had a good time.

This is on the 170 yard uphill par 3 and lipped out a right to left downhill putt.

Great round! It's especially impressive since you played an irons only round. It sounds like the swing changes are working out and I hope it continues to get better and better.
