Putter Length vs Height

Golf Circuit (James)

Recommended Posts

Obvious case of putter envy.:D

5'11" however, I have four putters 33", 35" and two that are belly putters.

Normally I use the 35" but tomorrow I am using a belly putter. The interesting thing is that it really makes me no difference what putter I am using as long as I have a few putts before the round to gauge the speed. I am using a longer one tomorrow because I can stand up straighter and relieve pressure on a pulled hamstring. I used it today and it was a lot more comfortable. Full swings are not bothering me at all but putting is distracting.

Quick question. Does putter length matter? Can't you just choke down to where it feels comfortable and use it that way?

I choke way down like FLV does.

I'm 5'11", I use a 33.75"... Probably going to go down another 1/4" to a 33.50" as I feel when I don't choke down a little my arm position doesn't feel natural.

Quick question. Does putter length matter? Can't you just choke down to where it feels comfortable and use it that way?

Yea length matters in the putter, it can help you as a guide getting into a natural address position repeatably. Choking down on the club has a down fall that you might not grip it in the same spot every single time while on the course, might be a touch higher or a touch lower, there is no real guide to where you hands sit on the club. With the shaft a given length you always have the reference of the end of the putter to grip the club.

A correct putter length for the player can be used as a guide to repeatably and easily get into their natural posture. Custom fitting for a putter is probably more important then any other club in the bag IMHO.

The pad of my right index finger touches steel, everything else is on the grip, so I'm consistent. Like you said though, it makes sense that if you don't choke down the same every time it can screw you up....thanks.

I do the same exact thing. It gives me a consistent length, while also giving me better control and a smoother, more consistent stroke.

Yup, that is good as long as you have a reference point then you are fine. The right reference point on where the hands go onto the putter makes the putter like a yard stick and always puts you into the posture where you can see the line of the putt the best. I won't get too heavily into the putting fitting and sight line thing, I know what I know from working with Burnt Edges Consulting.

I also choke down but only far enough down to get my elbows straight when I take my putting position. My constant is that my elbows be reasonably straight and my eyes fall on the ball directly so that I can see the line.

I have no idea of how long my putter is. I just need it long enough so that it does not disappear into the bag.

I'm 6'2" tall and my answer style & mallets/semi-mallets are 35"..My heel-shafted blades(Scotty Napa, Yes Sophia & WS 8802) are 32" & my two bellys' are 42"....

Fairways & Greens 4ever....

Well I forgot to talk about the design and weight of my putters lol... I also use Answer style putters that have a full shaft offset neck...

~ Scotty Cameron Newport 2 (Carbon, old sucker), about 330g head

~ YES! Callie-f (304 Stainless), about a 355g head

~ SeeMore DB-4 (Carbon), 350g head

All the same length and same style of putters weight just changes between them plus the materials are slightly different so MOI is a little different. The Cameron comes off the most dead, SeeMore is in the middle, YES! is by far the hottest face putter I have used.

I'm 6'1" and use a 34.25" putter and choke down to where my right hand is 1/2" from the bottom of the grip. I like how it counterbalances just touch is why I don't cut it off some more, and I also like how the Pistolero that's on it rests in my hand when choked down that far.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.
