Franken-cart! Rob's DIY push cart. v-1.0/2.0

So lately I had been wanting to try walking on the course more and more on my mind. Goodness only knows why, especially with the heat and humidity we get 8-9 months of the year!

I've read all the topics, researched push carts, read reviews here, got involved in a few discussions here too.

Well, with any chance of playing golf nixed due to heavy storms and rains the last 2 days, I went goodwill/thrift store hunting.(I know, no big surprise coming from me)

I did not find a single golf push cart though.  (or any clubs... weird)

At the last place I walked into, as I was turning the back corner to head out, my spidey sense was tingling,  and I saw something...  it wasn't hidden, it just wasn't on my radar.

I wheeled it out onto the floor space, and my mind proceeded to calculate  at 1000mph in different directions. 

It had a sweet price tag of 19.99. It still had stickers on the tires and plastic on the handle.  I rolled it up front and said out loud, "You know, this will work!" To which the lady at the counter replied "huh?"  

I got it home, and began dissecting it down to its bones. I made short work of it, and saw it's potential unfold before my eyes.

I've made no secret that I am a CAPP for alot of things, so I started putting my ideas together and decided i was going to repurpose as much of its pieces as I  could. I emptied the stix bag to use as a mock up test bag, and proceeded to rummage through my garage.

Once I had 90% of what I thought I needed, I began the build out.

I managed to utilize the seat buckle camlock strap as a bag lock for the bottom. Cut and moved the canopy and its mechanism/arm to the top. Repositioned the rocker buckles and the folding lock arms.

I used the lock arms as a cross brace for the bottom pvc pipe. Originally I drilled and bolted it directly on to secure it in place. This gave me a usable reference to build off of. I was able to place the bag on the base, strap it down, and position it to see where it needed to be for best club clearance. I placed the wedges and the driver in the bag at the top and bottom for a visual aid. All in about an hours time, then headed into the house.

Today I woke up to more nasty weather,  so decided it was time to finish what I started!  I set the bag in place, used a small bucket to position it up enough to clear the clubs over the top box

I had decided that the easiest and best way to make the top bag rest work well, was to build a pvc style field goal. I measured both bags (stand and cart) then measured,  cut, and dry fit the pieces.  The bag sat nicely in place!

I then glued it all together (no turning back at that point) and attached it to the pvc cross rail. I closed and reopened the jogger several times.  I needed to make it so the field goal would collapse flat when it was closed.  That's when I decided to drill cross holes at the base and use locking hitch pins to secure it. 

I drove to the store and picked up a pair of hitch pins, a pool noodle, and pvc end caps. Test ran the open and closed positions and was satisfied.  I cut up the pool noodle and used it on all the pvc pieces. This serves as both padding for the bags, and also it prevents side to side shifting of them.

Placed each bag on the cart, and it was a perfect fit!  I then deiced to remove the canopy itself, as it was just not able to cover the bag or clubs. I was truly hopping it would be big enough as an added measure of rain protection.  

Last was figuring out how to secure the top of the bags. I was hoping to re-use the original straps,  but they were not long enough.  So I grabbed a few different types of bungee cords.  The black rubber ones worked just OK, but couldn't move them around enough.  I tried next some elastic bungee cords, and found one that did the job well.  I still wasn't  satisfied though.  So I went digging through a bin of random crap (doesn't everyone have a bin of random crap ?) and pulled out a cam locking tie down strap I've never used.  Reusing the carts old strap fasteners, I attached it to each side and test fit each bag. Eureka!  It worked great!

Now, I know the pool noodles are hideous, but they work for their intended purpose. 

I still have to find a sliding tray to mount to the bottom of the cup holder bar, (for phone,  keys, etc) , and either a mini clipboard,  or a golf cart specific one to attach to the top part to keep a scorecard and pencil on.

It fits well folded up in the back!

Future development ideas include tube clamp accessories like an umbrella mount, phone mount, drink holder for oversized bottles/tumblers, etc.  But those can be found for cheap almost anywhere from WM to Amazon to temu, and can be non golf specific. (Strollers,  bicycles, motorcycles, etc all offer some type of accessories product options)

Awesome job on the conversion! Is there a way you could paint/colour the pool noodle black to match? I know the material isn’t ideal for painting but wondered if there’s another way you could colour it?

Good suggestion! I could get some black waterline pipe insulation I suppose ? It is a bit softer/squishier than the pool noodle.

Just thought it would stop the noodle from standing out so much and give it a more uniform look. The pipe insulation is a good idea

That's pretty awesome @Rob Person! I don't think I would ever think of doing something like that. I was going to suggest the water line insulation, but see it's already been mentioned. I think it would blend in better than the pool noodles. 

Anyhow, I give you major kudos for being so creative. I can't wait to hear how the trial run goes.

Very creative @Rob Person!  Could possibly use Gorilla tape over the pool noodles.

We used these type of strollers for our kids and they roll so well!

Thank you all.  I know its not everyones style.

Just ordered some clamp accessories from temu. Umbrella holder, phone rubber clamp thing, waterproof hanging bag.  Total is up to $37.

I may pick up some pipe insulation today and try that.  

A personal issue I have is over thinking things.  Looking at the base i want tochange  its seat angle to match the bag position.  May unbolt it and see, but not wanting to cut it up is key. I have some 1/2" conduit I may be able to notch and fit to use to lift it up at the front?

I should really test it out before making more modifications though.

Great Job!  If I didn't have a sun mountain cart I inherited I would be inspired to do something similar.

Instead of moving the original base to match the bag angle, how about bolting something on top of the base to get the proper angle?

I have used the ball bungee canopy tie down straps to secure a bag on an older golf cart that the straps had broken.  A ball bungee on each side rather than one strap going across the bag worked and was easier to get on/off.  It depends on the bag and where you can loop the bungee though.

Good idea.  I thought about building over the base too. But don't have any tube stock that is similar to the buggy. Maybe I can find an old stroller and cannibalize it for some tubes?

I have a neighbor that stopped by and suggested i use a velcro cinch strap with a cross buckle.  He is going to see if he can find his and let me try it out!

I am way less elegant in my thinking and had a wood wedge in mind with a piece of appropriately rigid plastic cut to size & shape (old 5 gal bucket bottom or lid).  But I have a backwoods, shade tree engineering degree.  Somebody here more edumacated could probably use a 3d printer to come up with the proper part!  However, I would paint them to match, I have evolved somewhat in my creations!!

Hahah.  We may be more alike then you think. My idea involved a hard memory foam wedge I'm not using, cut and fit, then a piece of 1/2" plywood glued to the foam, secured by 2 lag bolts.  Paint?  Nobody has time to paint!

Excellent conversion.  I figure this could allow you to jog on the course much better than any push cart!  Looks good too!

Just a question…  Does the pool noodle provide sufficient floatation in case someone were to roll the cart into the pond?   Just curious…

Goodness no!  They would slide off and abandon ship quickly!

Took the franken-cart out for it's maiden voyage today, and it performed well! 2 things to note: 1, I was only supposed to walk 9 holes, that did not go as planned, I walked the full 18!!. 2, without full length dividers, the club grips fall back into each other and it was a pita to remove them. This bag is not conducive for tilted use!  (Even though it's a stand bag.)

I am sunburnt, and my leg muscles are on fire too!  I'm going to feel this tomorrow for sure!

While the course appears to be mostly flat, it has some creeping elevation changes that are not recognized when riding in a cart! But pushing a cart?  It is a Whole different level!  

I will say that I enjoyed it though,  and when the cooler weather prevails, I may do this alot more!

Awesome job! Once you get the black pipe insulation on there and swap the orange strap for a black one I reckon you could start a sideline in customised golf trolleys

This is amazing.. I've never been a diy guy.. Just not creative like that.. Just curious, I'm not 100% about ur weather but it gets 100+ here.. Could u use more pipe and extend that canopy above ur head for shade or in case u get caught walking in the rain and find a way to let it down when u want?

That is pretty awesome. If I didn’t already have a push cart I would do that to one of the million strollers we have (although I’m pretty sure my wife would kill me)

I've considered looking for a way to do a make shift canopy. Just haven't found the right inspiration yet.  I do have an umbrella clamp ordered and will use that. I may order a second one to use for just over the clubs too.  That's the great thing about having tube framing, you can clamp almost anything to it!

Yes, we get stupid hot temps and high humidity here 9 months average in the SE.

If I were to go the route @Northern Monkeysuggested , im sure i would never hear the end of it from local mom groups protesting how im buying up push carts from thrift stores and depriving fanilies in need. (Seriously,  I've thought about that happening just from this one project!)

I did see where some people have used hover boards attached to Strollers so they didn't have to walk behind them! Not sure that would work for a golf cart though

I was able to place the bag on the base, strap it down, and position it to see where it needed to be for best club clearance. I placed the wedges and the driver in the bag at the top and bottom for a visual aid. All in about an hours time, then headed into the house.

Today I woke up to more nasty weather,  so decided it was time to finish what I started!  I set the bag in place, used a small bucket to position it up enough to clear the clubs over the top box

I had decided that the easiest and best way to make the top bag rest work well, was to build a pvc style field goal. I measured both bags (stand and cart) then measured,  cut, and dry fit the pieces.  The bag sat nicely in place!

I then glued it all together (no turning back at that point) and attached it to the pvc cross rail. I closed and reopened the jogger several times.  I needed to make it so the field goal would collapse flat when it was closed.  That's when I decided to drill cross holes at the base and use locking hitch pins to secure it. 

I drove to the store and picked up a pair of hitch pins, a pool noodle, and pvc end caps. Test ran the open and closed positions and was satisfied.  I cut up the pool noodle and used it on all the pvc pieces. This serves as both padding for the bags, and also it prevents side to side shifting of them.

Placed each bag on the cart, and it was a perfect fit!  I then deiced to remove the canopy itself, as it was just not able to cover the bag or clubs. I was truly hopping it would be big enough as an added measure of rain protection.  

Last was figuring out how to secure the top of the bags. I was hoping to re-use the original straps,  but they were not long enough.  So I grabbed a few different types of bungee cords.  The black rubber ones worked just OK, but couldn't move them around enough.  I tried next some elastic bungee cords, and found one that did the job well.  I still wasn't  satisfied though.  So I went digging through a bin of random crap (doesn't everyone have a bin of random crap ?) and pulled out a cam locking tie down strap I've never used.  Reusing the carts old strap fasteners, I attached it to each side and test fit each bag. Eureka!  It worked great!

Now, I know the pool noodles are hideous, but they work for their intended purpose. 

I still have to find a sliding tray to mount to the bottom of the cup holder bar, (for phone,  keys, etc) , and either a mini clipboard,  or a golf cart specific one to attach to the top part to keep a scorecard and pencil on.

It fits well folded up in the back!

Future development ideas include tube clamp accessories like an umbrella mount, phone mount, drink holder for oversized bottles/tumblers, etc.  But those can be found for cheap almost anywhere from WM to Amazon to temu, and can be non golf specific. (Strollers,  bicycles, motorcycles, etc all offer some type of accessories product options)
