RookieBlue7
Well, almost blacked out anyway. I had to throw a little color in the paintfill, so I matched it to my putter. This is a gloss black polymer. I washed it, and didn't get all the water spots off, but you get the idea. Thoughts? I may still redo it in matte black, but have to order that material, as I don't currently have any here. So I refinished it in gloss black so I could see if I like the color in tomorrow's round. I have been playing a ghost since last year, so this is my first foray back to black in a while... RookieBlue7
Polymer is similar to powdercoat, but it goes on much thinner (roughly 1 mil thick (not a millimeter, but a mil, a thousandth of an inch)). The application process is similar to powdercoat as well, but not quite. It's a baked finish to harden it. They look good that way. They look good only for a while. I've never found a way of coating forged irons that were worth the trouble, except having them plated again. The alternative is to leave them raw until they develop an even dark patina and use them that way. The most difficult part of this is leaving them alone during the transition period. They look disgusting and there is a strong temptation to treat the splotches that develop that must be resisted. Once you get past that the clubs maintain their looks so well you need to think a bit to remember how old they actually are. At that point maintenance is just a matter of keeping them clean with water and a stiff nylon brush to avoid developing pits. The alternative is to use rust converter which gives it a color. Mine became a dirty grey/white. That also comes off with use but can be reapplied with just a brush and let dry. This becomes old after a while for me, but some people enjoy the time usage. That's what Plum Brown is. Another rust color control method (that's all black ox is in the cold form, controlling the color of rapidly rusting). Thing that sucks is if you have a sandy range or hit a bunker shot, it's gone after 1 ball. That's why I use plum brown because I like dark patina (see rust). The plum brown lasts a little longer and you don't notice when the rust starts forming on its own. Close to the same application method as cold black ox.
