High Viz golf balls — what sorcery is this?!

Recommended Posts

I’ve historically been a white ball purist — mostly because people would give me ProV1s for free. But last Tuesday I played yellow ProVs, and they were so much easier to track in the air, as well as spotting on the ground.

Can anyone explain why the yellow ball is easier to see in the air? I’m totally mystified.

Because colors like yellow and orange are easier to see.

It's all about contrast. The colored balls have less to blend into against the background .

However, I've still managed somehow to lose them in the middle of the fairway.  😆

Contrast.  You bet cha.  But contrast in blue sky differ than cloudy, and differ than on the ground.  Bright red / orange is maybe easiest to track in the air but bright green/yellow better on the ground.    It also differs by person because peoples visual color pickup can vary.  When I use white I slather on a big swath of red magic marker.  Half in wide and an inch or more long.  Magic marker is cheap.  It's easy to tell which white ball is mine, the one with red lipstick.

I'm a big fan of the colored balls. Agreed with @Donn lost in San Diego that red/orange is easier to track in the air, but can be a nightmare to find on the ground, especially anywhere with any leaves on the ground. I like playing the matte blue balls which are easy to find on the ground and surprisingly easy to track in the air.

The only colored balls I absolutely can't work with is the TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe or the Srixon Divide. I love how they look, but they're a nightmare to find. Depending on how and where the ball settles, you could be looking one solid color, a different solid color, a split color, or a solid white ball. IMO - Keep a variety of colors in the bag to try out, but make sure each ball is only a single color.

I always pooh-pooh'd yellow balls for the longest time, then late last season I tried the Maxfli Tour S in yellow and it made things so much easier for me to track in the air and on the ground. Especially as someone who walks solo rounds a lot during twilight. Going forward any new balls I buy will be yellow, because my eyes certainly aren't getting any better.

I think it is more of a contrast deal like others have said.

I have used all sorts of different balls over the years and that includes several that are orange, yellow, green, red and even pink before. Prefer orange to any of the other colors but really settled on the Vice Pro Plus drip. Definitely a great ball and adds just enough color to pop or be noticeable.

I have orange, white and lime green balls in my bag, and the white is only there because it's the leftovers from the Mindset balls Bridgestone sent me/us. I think honestly lime green is easier to see, but harder to buy. And regardless of color, I have trouble following balls in the air. This weekend I lost multiple balls that I couldn't find largely because I lost sight of them in flight and thus didn't see where they landed, or the landing zone was hidden by mounds or gorse or tall fescue or all of the aboe. My playing partners tried to help, and they did. Today Pete found one down in a plant in the gunch that I never would have seen unless I stood right over it.

Obsessed with chasing the dimpled orb.

I struggle to see yellow and green against the grass, I can see red and orange very well, but white best. The longest ball I’ve hit with my 3 hybrid has been the red ball, it think it was a Callaway, other than that I hit the white Callaway Chrome Tour X and white Titleist Pro V1X- the farthest. I’ve heard that colored balls aren’t as long, even on MGS, but that red ball went 287 with the 3 hybrid. The vets I was playing with were awestruck.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

I agree. I've been playing mostly white Maxfli Tour S balls this season. I went back to my Vice Pro Drip and found them to be easier to see. JUST enough color pop to be noticeable!

My playing partner played the gold Vice Pro balls the same day and we lost 3 that looked like they should've been within 10 yards of the fairway! 😆 So I do NOT recommend the gold! He also lost several others to other hazards, but we don't have to get into that either...

I typically play regular white balls, but recently I've been playing Vice Pro Plus drip and TaylorMade TP5x high-vis yellow and the high-vis yellow are definitely easier to see. I like the Vice drip design because it's easier to identify your ball vs. others, but at distance, it's really no difference.

I used to play the Srixon QStar Tour Divide balls with the split yellow and red colors.  For me, the combination was easy to see in the air.  In fact, with the frequency of light and ball rotation, it seemed like I could actually see the ball changing colors and spinning in the air.

The unintended benefit of playing the balls is that people I play with knew I did.   So, when they found one on the course, they would give it to me.  Over a year or so, I probably got two dozen Divide balls from other people (and no, I never was given one I lost).

I've always been flexible as to ball color and have played a ton of different styles. White, yellow, orange, pink, divide, stripe, truvis, and drip.

Admittedly, it is becoming more of a consideration as my vision is starting to get worse on tracking things, hence my recent switch to Maxfli Tour S in Yellow, and looking at the Vice Pro Air potentially, plus hoping for a yellow Left Dash in 2025.

Also, golf is just more fun I think with some whimsy. It reminds me at least to not take it so seriously. Heck, the best tournament I ever played was with a Pink Bridgestone E6 that I bought because at Dick's we sold the pinks for 2 bucks cheaper even though it was the same ball because no one wanted them.

I broke down and ordered some bright orange Supersofts after yesterdays round. One of my local courses is Pinehurst-esque and has lots of white sand and pine straw areas instead of typical rough. I lost 6 balls that I saw land but couldn’t locate once I got to the landing area, that was a frustrating experience.

I began playing optic yellow because here in SC a white ball would simply disappear in the bermuda rough. ("Hit it into the fairway" I know, I know...)

I've settled on the Maxfli Tour in optic yellow now, also noticing that 60+ yr old eyes just don't track ANYTHING as well as they used to. 😵

Wait until you hit 70.  You'll need a playing partner to stand behind you and help track the ball.  As long as he's not also 70!

Wait until you hit 70.  You'll need a playing partner to stand behind you and help track the ball.  As long as he's not also 70!

My league partner is 78 (I'm 64). We both have to stand behind each other to track either ball. It's not uncommon for him to turn and look at me and ask, "Where'd it go?", before he even finishes his swing!

More often than not I play either a Taylormade tour response yellow or a Snell MTB-X Optic yellow,  as it is way easier to find, even more so on wayward hits.    I now don't like playing white golf balls.

As we are now in Winter in Aust, we have cloudy / overcast / wet days etc now.

I changed to the Taylormade Speedsoft HiViz yellow a month ago and find them brilliant.

Also, being colour blind doesn't help me.

During Autumn, the white balls tended to blend in with the leaves on the ground, yes, I do spray the ball, so never always in the fairway.

The yellow balls are so much easier to see in flight, even on clear blue sky days, so I'm a huge convert to them.
