jarone Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I have been playing the Callaway Truvis. The ball performs well for me but now that they are over $50/dz, I don't want to spend that much on golf balls. I am a huge soccer fan, so I prefer the ball that looks like a soccer ball. My driver speed is low 90's. I've been comparing balls while playing and am looking for recommendations. I've tried the following balls so far: Srixon Q-Star Tour Bridgestone BRX Maxfli Tour I get approximately the same distance with the driver with all 3 balls. I've found that the Maxfli does not spin and hold the green as well as the Srixon and Bridgestone. The other issue that I'm having is that you can't buy just a sleeve of balls in order to try the balls. For example, Vice does not sell sleeves of balls. So far I am favoring the Srixon but am open to suggestions. Quote

(Feel/compression, spin - long game and short game, ball flight - low, medium, high, etc.) Everyone will respond and say you need to test them all, which is definitely true. But depending on the performance characteristics you're looking for, we could give other options as well. I'm a big fan of the Maxfli Tour/Tour X for the performance and price. You mention the Tour didn't spin enough for you on approach shots. The Tour X (while harder/higher compression) spins more and flies higher, so worth trying that to see if it helps you hold greens better. jarone Posted July 24 Author Posted July 24 Thanks. I am looking for a softer feeling ball that will stick on my approach shots. It seems that the Q-Star tour is checking that box. brogies 1 Quote
Pcmart03 Posted July 25 Posted July 25 I'm also a fan of the Truvis, but lately I've been switching between the Srixon Q-Star Divide and the TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe. They both work equally well for me. I think the Q-Star feels a tiny bit better on full swings, but I think the tour response has an edge with my chipping and putting. I'm interested in trying a Maxfli or Vice because I like how they perform when I find one in my range balls, but I have too many golf balls in my house right now. brogies 1 Quote

Also been comparing it on the course with the 2023 ProV1x and 2024 Callaway Chrome Tour X and I really can't tell much of a different if at all. JAYER38 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 This is the perks of playing balls you find in the woods/on course haha. No seriously I play alot of different balls and mark down what I like or performs well for me. IT is very crazy that a ball can affect your game as much as they do. Srixon Divide Q Star has been a go to for me (just wish it wasn't matte finished) Callaway ERC Soft (love the feel off the face) Titleist Tru Feel (find alot of these but they play great) Taylormade Distance+ was decent. Found the Tour Response to mark up easily MaxFli has been nice all around honestly MNUte and Hacker60521 2 Quote DRIVER Paradym Ai SMOKE MAX D w/ Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 55-R 10.5* HYBRID Big Bertha 19 w/ UST Recoil DART 75-S 20* IRONS TS3 Forged 4i-GW w/ True Temper Score LT 100-R WEDGES Glide Forged Pro w/ ZZ115-W 52-10*/58-10*/58-6* PUTTER HB SOFT 8 w/ Center Shaft 3* Check out my Tests...
Hacker60521 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 @brogies I can add that I wasn’t a fan of the BRX. For reference my regular ball is a ProV1. But I wanted to see what other balls might work well for me. While the BRX felt softer, it seemed almost too soft for me. But I didn’t see any loss in distance. On full wedge shots it certainly stuck the landing brogies 1 Quote Driver: Stealth2 3W: Stealth2 4H: Stealth 2 Irons 4I-9I: T200 Wedges P, 48: T200 Wedges 54, 58: Vokey SM9 Putter: O Works #1 Black
RetiredBoomer Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Pro V1x on most holes. [ I can get custom ball #79 ordering those.] AVX on driving iron holes. Penfold Ace for luck on par 3s. Whatever is on sale at Dick's would work just as well, but one must keep up appearances. Fell free to ignore my recommendations, however, based on how well they work for me. Quote
JFish350 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 This is going to be my off season thing, try out golf balls. I have Srixon XV. I have a higher swing speed 95-97 with 7 iron. This ball holds the green. The issue I have with it is chipping, it holds the green. So i need to fly the ball a little further onto the green or if I want it to run on the green I use a lower lofted club like 5 iron or even a hybrid or wood. This spring I was dealing with an injury and didn't want to spend premium money. I played the Snell ball. I forget his first name, but Mr. Snell is the creator of the Pro V1, and started the Taylor Made ball line. I would suggest trying them out. They have a test pack to find a ball that works for you. I first tried the "Get Sum" ball. Good ball, just wasn't perfect for me. I'd still use it if they didn't have the "Prime" line of golf ball. Something to look into. A test pack is $30 and a tour ball test pack is $34. brogies 1 Quote Sub 70 949 D 9* HZRUDS 60G 6.5 smoke RDX shaft. Just played the Q Star Tour Divide yesterday (admittedly hot and dry) and the minor issues I had with it honestly had nothing to do with it being matte. And being one of the testers for the Volvik Vivid's, I'm trying to listen to as many people's thoughts on matte balls as possible. brogies 1 Quote Rag tag bag, but it does the job. I've noticed the biggest difference in roll on the greens and feel off the putter face. I did happen to find a Z star divide with a gloss finish on the course yesterday I'm going to try next round. Believe that ball is a little harder then I usually play but we shall see! Also good luck on your testing! I also noticed a slightly different (slower) roll on the greens that took a little practice to get used to. I'm curious to see if the vivids are the same since I play some fast greens and a slower ball might not be a bad thing in some cases. brogies and JAYER38 2 Quote Rag tag bag, but it does the job. tschott Posted August 1 Posted August 1 You might check out OnCore golf balls. They are direct to consumer and make a very good ball. I've been playing the Elixir for the last 3 years and really like it. If you bundle 2 dozen they are priced very reasonable and they usually run a buy 2 get 1 free a few times a year. If you want to try a sleeve message me and I'll gladly send you one to try as I have 4 dozen ready to be used. They will be yellow model of Elixir but you may like them.
