Initial Decision Process

When I was in the market for new irons, I was torn between the Srixon ZX5 Mk2 and the ZX7 Mk2. After testing both, I found that the ZX7 Mk2 offered more consistent spin rates, which was a crucial factor for my game. Ultimately, I decided to order the ZX7 Mk2 irons from 4 iron to pitching wedge, opting for the Modus Tour 105S shafts. This choice was driven by better dispersion and slightly higher swing speed with these shafts.

Performance and Consistency

Having used the Srixon ZX7 Mk2 irons for over a year now, I can confidently say that I am still in love with these clubs. The distance is incredibly consistent on clean strikes, and mishits aren't overly punished, which is a significant advantage. As an avid low iron player, I also have the Srixon ZX Utility Mk2 2 iron, and the transition within the set is seamless.

The 4 iron is where achieving a clean strike becomes challenging for me, but the 5 iron and up are very easy to hit. If I were to order the set again, I would probably go for the 5 iron to PW and opt for the ZX Utility Mk2 4 iron. The ZX7 is a very workable iron, but getting real height with the 4 iron from the set is a bit more challenging (driver swing speed of 107). I have hit my friend's ZX Utility 4 iron and found that it offers a better launch, which is essential for my game.

Feel and Feedback

One of the standout features of the ZX7 Mk2 irons is the feel. On a pure strike, nothing feels better. The face feels powerful and provides excellent feedback. Even on miss strikes, you can feel it in your hands, but not in a painful way—it's very informative. This feedback has been invaluable, especially coming from more game improvement style irons. The transition to these irons has made me a purer ball striker, something I truly appreciate.

Shot Shaping

Another remarkable aspect of the ZX7 Mk2 irons is their ease of shot shaping. Small changes in setup produce noticeably different flight paths, making it very easy to work the ball both ways. Whether I want to hit a draw or a fade, or adjust the trajectory higher or lower, these clubs respond exceptionally well to subtle adjustments. This level of control and workability has given me the confidence to take on a variety of shots with precision.

Conclusion

The Srixon ZX7 Mk2 irons have exceeded my expectations over the past year. Their consistency, feel, feedback, and shot-shaping capabilities have significantly improved my game. If you are considering a new set of irons and value workability, consistency, and informative feedback, the ZX7 Mk2 irons with the Modus Tour 105S shafts are an excellent choice. While the 4 iron might be challenging, pairing the set with the ZX Utility Mk2 4 iron can offer the perfect blend of performance and ease of use. Also, I'm a 13 handicap and I love these things, don't be put off by the (low handicap) label these carry, try them for yourself!

Great review! I have a set of z785s that I bought when I first started playing and realized I made a mistake shortly after. I then went and got fitted for some Mizuno Jpx 923 Hmp's and while they are nice I was inconsistent with them. Then I seen a set of Zx5's (the first version) on Ebay and I made a offer and they accepted it. So far they have been fantastic and are very forgiving! I also like the Nippon Modus Tour 105s shafts.

@Bad Golfer

It's strange to say but when I hit Modus 120S it felt almost floppy. I'd have to time my swing to the shaft. I didn't have the courage to ask to try the x-stiff because let's face it, with 107mph driver speed I'm borderline X but I can see immediate eye rolls when a teen handicapper asks for x-stiff! 😄 The 105S by comparison really worked with my more aggressive swing and it made the clubhead feel a lot heavier which I liked. Also, it launches very high, it's always easier to bring a high flight down than a low flight up!

My mate has the 120S and loves it, so maybe it's just a matter of preference.

When I was fitted into the Mizuno's the Modus 115s is what he put me in because of my "aggressive" start on the down swing. He said I was borderline between stiff and x-stiff. I will say that my swing has changed quite a bit but the 115s never really felt right to me.

The 105s seem to work well for me and I'll stick with them until I get new irons in a few years.
