Aaron Rai, man as much time as that dude spends over putts, you would think that he would make more five to ten footers. I have always been of thought that there should be a clock for putting 45 seconds max. He was standing over putts as much as five minutes and still miss! I don’t blame Kuch for picking up, losing that many strokes on day four and waiting hole after hole I’d have been pissed too!

Yeah, that is way too long for a missed putt. There should be a new rule implemented about “time over a shot”.  You can take as much time as you want behind the ball looking at the course and where you’re going to aim. But once you get into the address position, you have 20 seconds to putt. Period. The end. If they can have a pitch clock in professional baseball, they can have a putt clock in Golf.

I didn't watch any, but have seen others, take FAR TOO LONG. I am a pretty good putter, and I have said this many times.  I am also 100% certain nobody would ever take me or anyone else  up on this to prove, just how RIDICULOUS the amount of time pro's take over putts actually is.  Time this guy you are referring to, and how much time he actually takes, when it is/was his turn to putt, and how much time he walks around, for every putt, for all 18 holes.  Mark where his first putt comes from on each and every green.

I will then putt out from wherever his putts came from.  I will do it absolutely in less than half the time, and likely in 1/3 of the time.  I will also say this my deviation from the hole will be less than 20% greater than his, on all putts combined..  Now at this point you are saying NO WAY!  Hold on a have a couple reasonable caveats.  I will get a caddy from the course, who knows the greens, as they and their caddie's do from playing these places many times.  I will receive the same number of practice days that the professional did to practice my putting on the actual holes, with the knowledge as he would where the pin placements are going to be on the round I am doing this.  This way I can practice uphill downhill, and side hill putts, with knowledge of the cup placement, and to experience the speed of the greens.  On the day of the challenge, not having watched the pro, my caddie and I will be dropped off 30 yards from the green, to observe the flag, and the length of the putt, as we approach.  My time will start when I step foot on the green.  On missed putts, I will miss less than 20 % greater(likely less than 15%), and I will do it in less than half the time, probably by a large margin.

It will never be done, because it would prove just how meaningless all the time pro's take over putts actually is.

I think Aaron Rai is a standup guy, but I agree that he needs to pickup the pace.  Sadly he is only one of many brutally slow players.

The “pitch clock” had a positive effect on viewership in the MLB and in Tennis.  I agree that we are overdue for the PGA to consider the same. I know that they have rules in affect, but an actual countdown clock in the broadcast and on the course would be the fairest solution.

Rather than time over a shot, I’d like it to include the decision time as well. Maybe 45 second clock starts when you stop by the ball and pauses until it’s clear to hit?

Once I learned how to putt cross-handed, with no fiddling around with my grip, I putt in 10 seconds or less.  If you aren't comfortable with your stance and grip, go fix it at practice, not with people waiting.

Are you saying he stood over a putt in his address position for 5 minutes?  Doesn't seem possible.  On tour, I think the worse the putter the more time he is likely to take.

No that’s not what he was doing. He would stand there and fart around with his back shoulder trying to get himself lined up for correct position, then he would back off and look at his putt again . Couple practice swings. Not comfortable, start the whole process over and over. In my opinion golf is about rhythm, those that have to play behind this guy tend to have wait far too long to play their next shot.
