Ghost Golf GT-14 Cart Golf Bag – Official MGS Forum Review by EasyPutter [Derek Henshaw]

Intro-  My name is Derek and I live in Western NY, or WNY as I often write, and I am golf obsessed.  MyGolfSpouse has put up with me for 35 years, together we have a daughter and son who make us proud, and a couple Cardigan Welsh Corgis that keep us entertained.  I had a 30 year military career in the Army Guard and Reserves that gave me more experiences and stories than I could relate this lifetime but at the end of it was when golf became my game.

2009GarrisonBallP1060192.JPG.cadd6d3240b7af82a3c8bdd465fbdf8a.JPG 20240103Hoaks.jpg.194c2ee72e063e165c2e44ad92fa4744.jpg20240119GelertGwynedd.jpg.8483a097eec98051e75ebfdf1c011524.jpg

Golf for me is played for fun, the joy of swinging a club, and an amazement that the ball will go in the approximate direction I want it to go.  Score is more of a metric for how well I am doing, a trend of slow progress best compared to tectonic plate movement.  I live close to Buffalo NY in a snow-belt region so outdoor golf is usually the warmer half of the year.  Curling has become my sport of preference in the colder half of the year.

🏌️‍♂️⛳   ☀️    🌳    🍃 🍂    🌲   🎄    ❄️     🥌

I had just turned 50 in the last months of my military career writing curriculum in the Army College.  At the age of 43, a full year of combat deployment took its toll on my lower back wearing 60lbs (27.3kg) of body armor, helmet and weaponry whenever going outside in the Middle East.  It didn’t take long carrying a golf bag and then pulling a golf cart to experience back strain.  I looked to get a push cart and found MyGolfSpy’s 2018 Push Cart Review and top recommendations of Sun Mountain Speed Cart and Clicgear 3.5+ were considered.  I also found the MGS Forum.

:sunmountain: :Clicgear:

My push cart is the Clicgear 3.5+ that carries my golf bag when a riding cart can be avoided and I don’t hesitate to load it with what might be needed while I am away from resupply on the course.  With all the weight on the push cart wheels others are often amazed by what I have in my bag such as first aid and extra hydration that in the past has rescued someone from heat injury.  Lifting the golf bag is rarely more than from vehicle to push cart and the straight ahead push is therapeutic for my back, and I think strengthens it without any wear.

CazenoviaGC10_21.20208thfairway(3).jpg.f3f0b7e2ec1aaffb1b2d57def476ba43.jpg

My 2018 Sun Mountain C130 Supercharged bag is showing its age.  One long zipper wore on a tighter corner and should be replaced but used my Combat Engineer resourcefulness and modified it as an open chute compartment ready to tuck club head covers, water bottles and such things into.  One feature I love is the patented Smart Straps that use hook & loop fasteners to securely attach the bag to a golf cart with no concern about the bag ever coming out of a provided retaining strap.

PXL_20240205_2018214942.jpg.c2697075ea183aaad8a3b2e543c7ce28.jpg

I am going to employ a variety of situations for the golf bag, from sanding on a variety of surfaces to being mounted on push cart and riding cart, changing the terrain for each platform to observe the security of the golf bag by the method of restraints intended for use and the behavior of the clubs in the 14 sections.  Storage is always a concern so the pockets are going to be evaluated for best uses because of the nature of the design and the nature of what goes in them.  External features for attachment points of various things are to be considered as towels, gloves, rangefinders, and other accessories can make a bag more or less functional.  The rain hood for me is important as it is a good way to ensure everything stays inside and out of view like in the vehicle, on a bag drop, or anytime leaving the cart unattended.  I’m interested to see how the clubs lay in their sections when on a riding cart versus a push cart where one stands vertically and the other one leans the bag about 30 degrees off vertical.  The grab handles are important for handling the bag anytime it needs to be moved so those will be assessed.  I’m sure this is all tip of the iceberg and more will come to mind and experience as the test continues.

📋📝📊

I am excited about testing the Ghost bag because of everything learned and observed to this point from the MGS Forum organized purchase made more than a year ago that did not fit my budget then, and then seeing them on the Talamore NC Meetup in 2023.  As carry bags they look great and comments of the owners equaled their visual prowess for quality and function.  We had the Community Call with Ghost Golf featured to learn about the history of the company, the philosophy of the brand and focus on quality, and the generosity that was truly exceptional that communicated an intentional purpose to make one part of the golf world a much better place with value and unparalleled product.

This golf bag will earn its place if everything I’ve written to this point is better than my previous 3 golf bags that include a Persimmon Cart bag (passed on to a nephew), Wilson Staff Cart Bag (passed on to brother), and the current Sun Mountain C130 Cart Bag (will have to be exceptional as my ACU camouflage bag was “the one” when chosen).

First off, thanks MGS for the opportunities you provide the golfing community with independent and unbiased testing. I am excited to test out the Ghost Golf GT-14 cart bag. I play out of Southwest Ohio and have been golfing for 25 years. I have been playing tournament golf for the last 9 years. I picked up the game after Happy Gilmore and Tiger Woods influenced a hockey playing northern Minnesotan to grip it and rip it. Tournament golf has got me hooked on the game, improving, running tournaments, and all around being a golf junky. I have a few certifications such as SuperSpeed, WHS, and Impact Zone. I took a yearlong Keiser University Associates program in Golf Management during the COVID times. I run some golf events and I am the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) chapter captain. I love the process of preparing, practicing, learning, and testing my game/equipment. I have done some testing for MGS in the past (links to previous testing at the bottom), so it is always a treat to get selected for another test. WITB: Still working with the TaylorMade M1 in driver / 3W, Srixon combo set, and a White Hot RX putter, Cleveland & TaylorMade Wedges, and the Vessel Lux 14 cart bag. I game the Vessel so it will be an interesting test to compare these two giants in the premium golf bag market. Previously I used mostly stand bags like Ping and Titleist. I switched to the cart bag because I use a push cart to walk and love how it sits on the Clic Gear.

I want to test this product by comparing it to my gamer, the Vessel Lux. Focusing on how well it performs in real-world scenarios. I will see if the materials made to last. With a cart bag, I need to see if the storage is practical. And last but most importantly, is this Ghost bag worth its price tag. The Ghost Golf bag is a premium leather bag that has rave reviews. Ghost’s cart bag combines stylishness with functionality, offering features like magnetic pockets and extensive storage space. Top priced, this bag aims to bring convenience and strength on the course. The real question is whether it justifies the price to purchase. The key features are its durability, magnetic pockets, storage spaces, and 7 beautiful color options. I expect that I will really like this golf bag, but I am not sure if it will be better than the Vessel. I will plan on playing a few holes most nights and a couple of rounds weekly. I want to use the bag on cart, range, and in the elements. See which one is the easiest to get on the golf cart and on my push cart. Hopefully get a good opportunity to play in some serious rain. Since my gamer Vessel and Ghost are in the same space for premium cart bags, I am excited to see how they rack and stack. They both have a lot of awesome features. But who will be the best and best looking? Easiest to get in and out of the vehicle, to carry to and from places, weight. The product that stays with me is going to come down to performance and looks. This is important to me, how the bag looks says a lot about you as a player. My preconceived notions that I have had about the company is that it is a very nice product that will last. I love the colors and 14 dividers in this product line. I went with the new Valor bag because I am a Veteran and love my country and being a patriot. Nothing like a little red white and blue. I think it will look super sharp with my PGA HOPE headcover and red Spy putter cover!

Howdy Spies!  My name is Mike (55), I am a mid handicap living on the east coast of Florida. I am unseriously, serious about my golf game. I'm still a working stiff that splits his spare time between golfing and tournament bass fishing. I am an 8.6 handicap that could shoot 69 or 99 currently. I love this game for so many different reasons. The integrity, the discipline, the laughter, the highs and lows, the comradery, and just being outdoors. I thrive on the pursuit of perfection, I have found it on 5 occasions in my 25 years of playing this game. But, by far, the best part of this game is the friends you make along the way.

I switched to a stand bag about 12 years ago from a Titleist tour bag.  All I remember from the switch was "how light this new bag is". That came at a cost though, I couldn't carry nearly as much stuff. It was either do without or I had to plan ahead. I pared every down to a bare minimum. Should be interesting to see how this much space works out after years of packing 12 pounds of "stuff" in a 4 pound bag.

Very excited to put this bag through the paces to see how I feel about it. I want to see how the pockets are laid out, determine if it is designed optimally for storage, ease of use, and ergonomics. I plan to see how it holds up to some elements and abuse. If it has a cooler, I'll be testing that as well. So my idea of when I think of a cart bag, It's all about storage. How well it securely stores ALL your stuff, from aspirin to zinc oxide. It's all about HAVING what you need, when you need it.  I have not looked at any Ghost G14 reviews or even the advertising purposely to have a clean palette when I do the initial unboxing/ first impression portion of the review.  I will do the best I can for all the Spies that are looking for a new bag!

First impression:  Wow. This is SEXY!

I really didn't know what to expect from Ghost. I have heard of them but I had not seen this bag before. Jumping right in, the box..... I would prefer a nondescript box.  With all the videos you see of dirtbags stealing stuff from doorsteps this box screams hey look at me. This matched perfectly with what I found inside the box. Upon removing the bag from the box I took a few minutes to look at it. Visually, it looks like a $500+ bag! The sleak  Oreo design has very sharp lines that make this bag look like a super model. The zippers are extremely smooth and quiet. I love the rubber zipper "grippers", a great touch. The rain cover feels like it's 4 pounds, it's not, but it is extremely thick. It feels silky and heavy duty at the same time. There is 3 cooler pockets which will be tested out very soon. The magnetic rangefinder pocket is really cool and designed perfectly.  It lifts up to allow the cart strap to be secured. I played with the magnet for 15 minutes. It closed perfect aligned nearly every time. There is a secret compartment under the bottom pocket (see video) I bet you could hide a 1/2 gallon of booze in it. The "leather" is very soft and all the seams looked like they were of a superior quality. The strap had a nice padding and was extremely soft, nearly velvety soft. This is the only part of the bag that I question whether or not it will hold up to abuse. First impression 10 of 10.

I did the first test this evening as well. For those that have very large putter grips. I have a Superstroke 5.0 that fit into the putter well easily.  I don't know of a larger putter grip out there, but if it's any bigger than a 5.0 SS, you might have an issue.

My two Oreos couldn't stand not being included in all the fun!

Hello to all.  First, I would like to thank MGS for choosing a rookie to test this product.  I will do my best to share all my experiences with the Ghost-GT14 (I chose the Maverick bag) as compared to my current Ping Pioneer bag.  I took a quick break from making my wife an end-grain cutting board to post this.  A full intro will be posted later today and then I am jumping right in.  Feel free to question everything I post, challenge me to do something you experienced with your bags that I have not, and poke fun at my club-head covers…I can take it!!!!!

I am excited for this opportunity and will do my best.  Until later, hit ‘em straight and one-putt all day long!

Good evening all,

Thought I would drop by and say hello......Hello.  I was recently selected to test the Ghost GT-14 bag and am grateful for the opportunity.   With that said, I would like to tell y'all a tad about me.  I am a father of one fantastic daughter that is studying at Cincinnati, and husband of 22 years.  My wife started taking golf lessons this year so we could do couples golfing with a bunch of friends (she also wants to be better at golf than my daughter but that may take a few more lessons---don't let her know I said that!)  I am a Marine Corps Veteran that served from 1989-1999 with duty stations in North and South Carolina, the Mediterranean sea, Iraq, and Japan.  Currently I am a law enforcement officer of over 23 years in a suburb of Cleveland and retiring in a bit over a year, or sooner.  I like walks on the beach, cold drinks and ice cream by the spoonful...just kidding, but not about the ice cream.  Some of my hobbies are golf, bourbon tastings, reloading, reading books (yea those thingys they store on shelves with words in them), and woodworking.  Speaking of woodworking, I am in the midst of finishing an end-grain cutting board for the Mrs., there is a picture on one of the posts I put up today.

Let's see here---my 25 year, self-taught golf game has improved a bunch over the last two years and I went from a 15 to an 8 as of today.  Lowest handicap was a 7.3 about two months ago.  Yesterday I set a personal best 27 putts in a round.  Suffice it to say this has been a good golf year.   I hope to provide good, usable information during the review and look forward to our interactions.  Until next time, hit 'em straight and one-putt all day long!

September 27th,

I was able to complete an inspection of the bag, transfer all the goodies, and try it out in the back yard on a push cart.  Below will be the good and the things that make you go hmmm.  Get ready for this...

The transfer of the items when rather easy.  After filling all the pockets with necessary gear, I moved to the clubs.  As you can see in the slide-show, I put the clubs in the bag as indicated by the included card.  This set the clubs up in reverse making it difficult to see the irons behind the woods.  I switched it to the traditional setup and voila! Readable and so much more better. Next I put Mav on the pushcart and tried it out.  Very little movement on the cart, even after running it around the yard.  Neighbors musta had a good laugh, because I was not gentile with the cart.

IMG_8100.JPG.51354bfe194bc2366deefff61ca1e83d.JPG

The club setup on the cart would not be an issue whether you go traditional or Ghost style.  After the backyard circus show, I took the bag off and really looked it over top to bottom, inside and out.  Let's start with this thingymajig...

IMG_8089.JPG.b2fd2136db1fd970c9ed3a3eede9a7c5.JPG

Saw this and thought "uh oh."  Mav snagged something on landing at the Med and is in need of repair.  I looked around the top left area of the bag and could not find where this belongs.  I pulled the strap through the handle and hung a glove from it on the velcro patch, worked great so I am calling this a third area to hang a glove.  The large side pockets each have an internal mesh pocket (used it for money, keys and cards), and the front magnetic pouch does as well.  Kept my tee, ball mark, and divot tool there.

IMG_8126.JPG.a6196a53f2bda1486ed0b9cb5e6a5c69.JPGIMG_8128.JPG.9375023efe7b22c90fd0f156cde0e83c.JPG

Nice for ease of access, them meshy-pouches, me likes.

Now for the things that make you go hmmm.

There are two pockets (one on each side since this is a very symmetrical bag) that have the zipper opening facing skyward.  I can see this as an area that would collect water and debris.  Take a look at this and tell me what you think.

IMG_8129.JPG.d2153b1f6c6c41ddde5347348a128009.JPG

This shows the issue with the zipper closed. Speaking of the zipper, it appears to be fairly water tight, but still am open area above the zipper for mother nature to jump in.  Secondly, when testing the zipper on the lower, front puch I noticed it was hanging up on the top, left "corner" area.  When I looked at it I noticed a snag.

IMG_8119.JPG.d4c6586c6142b492017ff4ae36837275.JPG

Not something I was expecting but hey, these things happen.  So what is a Irishman to do with and Irish pennant?  That's right, burn that sun-of-a-gun down!!!  Bring on the fire!  You Veterans know what I'm talking about, NO Irish pennants on your uniform...errr...golf bag!

IMG_8120.JPG.3951aa7ec4e460d6fd688ae231c3695c.JPG

I melted that nylon bugger back to where it belongs, tapped it down, pushed the slightly proud seam back in and closed the pocket.  Worked like a champ! Problem solve.  No other hmmm-type issues beyond those.  Lastly, I took off the lower pouch cover, I will include at slide show of that here...

Final, initial thoughts?  The Ghost GT-14 is well made.  The materials are higher quality, stitching it tight all around the bag, plenty of room for gear, and light as a father that doesn't eat a boat-load of sweets. It is very light but solid.  More about the bag in a following post.

Pre-use score for Mav would be an 8.5.  As with all rating systems, this score can go up or down depending on future observations.  Reason for the 8.5 is the open-top zipper pockets, unknown durability of the materials, and ease of use.

Until next time, hit 'em straight and one-putt all day long!

Congratulations to this great group.

Knowing how many Spies love their Ghost AnyDay bags, will be following to see if these cart bags are just as good.

Looking forward to the comments and reviews.

Thanks guys! I haven't owned a cart bag in nearly 15 years. I have been inundated with pop ups and advertisements since I looked at the different models. It has been so hard not to read up on this bag. I wanted to be fresh and not have any background information or someone else's thoughts jammed in my brain.

Incredible recovery shots are set up by an equally incredible miss.
