Popular Post ZJeb67 Posted October 2 Popular Post Posted October 2 (edited) MGS Forum Official Review The Newton Motion Driver Shaft Hello My Golf Spy nation and all the ships at sea! Thrilled to be selected as a Newton golf shaft tester. I'm Joe, I live in Michigan with my wife and 2 black labs. I've got somewhere between a year and decade before I can retire and really prioritize golfing. Very sporadic golfer while the kids were growing up. Now that they're off the payroll, golfing has become quite the obsession. This year my game is improving towards a bogey golfer (usually with one blow up hole per round). What am I looking for in the testing. First, consistency, I want to be as repeatable on every swing as my ability allows. Second, I'm very interested in accuracy. Just this year I've finally been able to dial my slice into a fade and regularly land in the fairway. Lastly, any distance gains after would be great. Over the past year, I've been buying all manner of used clubs to see how different clubs can help me improve. I recently switched to some stiff flex shaft irons based on feedback from a big box fitting. Currently I have a franken-bag collection of clubs, anything that I hit consistently well on the course is safe. Can not wait to try a custom shaft on a known performing driver head. I had not heard of Newton before, but I expect to be quite familiar with the product by the end of testing. I'll be testing on the patio sim with my SC4 launch monitor, at the driving range and on the course. I'll compare the Newton with the existing Stix Compete stiff flex shaft. I expect a company with a specific offering to have a well designed, great feeling product. We'll see how the speed, flex and torque works for me. It's gonna be a great journey. Unboxing video - Delivery arrival! Attached my Callaway Mavrik driver head to the three dot shaft for some evening testing. Swing speed was fairly mild, good distance for that club speed for me and the smash factor is higher than usual 24Oct2024 update 50 degrees and sunny, I detoured from the lunch range visit to the course next to it. I got 5 holes in before rushing back to work. 1st hole, tried swing hard even though I know better. 3rd hole, easy swing, great distance for me, just off the fairway on the right rough 4th hole, easy swing, best drive ever #StripeShow (might have gotten generous roll out on the dry-ish fairway Initial thoughts - I'm hitting much straighter than usual, getting very good distance when I don't try to pound the drive. Very limited sample data, I better get back testing! 25Oct2025 Rushed out of work maybe a tad early and got right to the course. Today's test - inclusive. I generally aim left and fade the ball into the fairway. Today, I aimed left and more than once, trees jumped in front of my drives, very inconsiderate. I've swung into the net in the patio sim and been to the course twice. I think I'm due for some range time and really get a good feel for my swing with the 3 dot now and the 4 dot in the future. 26Oct2024 Different course for a mid morning 9. Despite it being more open I still managed to hit trees on the 14th and 17th. I'm coming to the conclusion that if I swing smooth with good tempo, let the shaft load and release on my swing through, good to great things happen (15th hole!) If I try to muscle the drive, I can slice it just as well as any other driver. Still need to get on the range and get dialed in. These sunny fall days and cooler temps have me detouring to the course. 27Oct2024 Frost delays at all the local courses made for a range trip The first 20 or so swings, swing speed was around 92 with a smash factor 1.39. Last 10 swing speed upped to 97 and the smash factor also improved in the 1.41 area. As much as I prefer on course testing, I think the range yields better comparison data. Now I'll have to repeat the process with the 4 dot Newton Motion Shaft. got out for an afternoon 9 post gutter cleaning. Today's round was 7 yards longer average with the Newton Motion with the drives more consistent. Final Review - 29Nov2024 First Impressions 9 out of 10 (really picky on my part wanting a Stix tip for my existing Stix Compete driver) Quite thrilled to be selected as a Newton Motion drive shaft tester. As an aspiring bogey golfer, I never experimented with shaft options other than trying regular vs stiff flex. This would be a great opportunity to see if I could get any drive improvement. Pre-testing my 2 drive shapes were a nice fade or varying degrees of a slice. I could aim left and coax my drive back into the fairway provided no ball snatching trees lining the left side of the fairway. If I'm nervous or rushed I can put a death grip on the driver and send my drive into the neighboring fairway or OB (not ideal). Newton has these 3 things to say on their website: Boost Your Swing Speed: Motion shafts allow energy created during your swing to be stored more efficiently, then released in a more controlled, stable manner through impact. Hit More Fairways: Our proprietary Symmetry 360 design virtually eliminates any spine and ensures consistency from shot to shot. Effortless Improvement: Our unique Dot System enables you to select the shaft flex that was specifically designed for your game...eliminating the guesswork of choosing between "regular", "ladies", or "senior". With those claims could this really be the Ginsu knife of golf shafts? (call toll free 1-800....) To start the testing we had a "virtual fit" call with Aki from Newton. He was beyond knowledgeable and explained how the shaft stored and released energy during the swing. He also mentioned that hitting the ball straighter with the Newton would provide better roll out towards the hole. With my swing speed fluctuating from high 90s to low 100s, he recommended the 3 dot and 4 dot and Newton and try for a Stix specific tip if they could source it. Ultimately both were sent with a Callaway specific tip for my existing 9 degree Mavrik driver head. I completely understand their carrying Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno, Ping, PXG, TaylorMade, Titleist and Tour Edge adapters. Might as well get 95%+ of the driver market. Aesthetics 10 out of 10 The Newton Motion driver shaft is a pleasing iridescent purple/blue/green depending on the angle and lighting. The shaft has white colored lettering for the make, model and flex, and a made in the USA logo, all easily read. The 3 dot and 4 dot I received were both topped off with Callaway specific adapters. I tend to think of myself as someone who is all about function over form. i.e. I would carry the most god-awful looking club as long as I hit it well. That being said, the Newton design looks great, they hit it out of the ballpark, to mix baseball and golfing metaphors. Fit & Comfort 20 out of 20 The fit and comfort for the driver shaft are fine as I'm a standard, off the rack golfer. The current length on the test shafts is perfectly acceptable. They do offer alterations per their web site. "All driver shafts are cut to a playing length of 45.75 inches when assembled with the driver head. If you require a different playing length, please let us know your specs in the notes section at checkout" On-Course 18 out of 20 I was able to get out over 20 times on various courses in southeast and northeast Michigan throughout the fall. I started switching my Mavrik head between the 3 dot and the 4 dot shafts. Later in the testing I was able to get a used Callaway EPIC MAX LS 9.0 Driver Head and put that on the 4 dot. My previous driver was adjusted to a draw bias and I set up the 3 dot similarly with a draw bias and -1 degree of loft. I immediately noticed that my drives were straighter with the Newton and my distance longer. I suspect a portion (but not all) of that was the straight drives had roll out towards the hole whereas my previous fade/slice drives would roll out to the right. I then set up the 4 dot with the same draw bias and found out quickly that the slightly stiffer flex worked better for my swing with a neutral bias and the same -1 degree of loft. Both shafts preformed great. I had the most success when I maintained good tempo and a fluid swing. Letting the club and shaft do the work paid dividends. While I had great dispersion improvement with the 3 dot, I think the 4 dot was ever better with dispersion. (Maybe there's something to this keeping the ball on the fairway?) The Good, the bad, the in-between 19 out of 20 The Newton Motion driver shafts really enforce a smooth, rhythmic swing as this produces much better results than a rushed or overly aggressive one. Walter White wrote (the poet, not the Breaking Bad character) "think big and your deeds will grow". For the Newton I could paraphrase, "swing smooth and your drives will soar". - edit: the poet is Walter Wintle (my bad) As I mentioned in an earlier update, I almost wish I could game a 3.25 flex Newton. I mean, they offer 6 variations and I'm still too picky. (I'm sure my wife finds me a joy to live with though ) Play it or Trade it? 20 out of 20 I will absolutely keep the Newton driver shaft in my bag. I think I'll take the 4 dot for very tight courses with punishing OB and the 3 dot for more open courses. Would I have considered spending the $220 (Black Friday November 2024 pricing)? Probably not before. After testing, knowing how well they work on the course, I would pry open my moldy wallet, break into Gringotts, one-click my way to the poorhouse. I really believe it has improved my game. Conclusion TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read). Newton lists their driver shafts are efficient, controlled, stable and consistent. What I found in my testing was yes, yes, yes and yes. All with the added bonus of ending up closer to the hole. Popular Post tdroma98 Posted October 2 Popular Post Posted October 2 (edited) MGS Forum Official Review The Newton Motion Driver Shaft Player Intro: Good Day Spies, my name is Tom Rossello and I live in sunny Orlando, FL. I want to thank both MGS & Newton Golf for this testing opportunity! I'm really looking forward to it! I'm married to my beautiful wife of 43 years tomorrow (10/10). I've been playing golf for over 50 years, picking up the game at age 13, after our family moved from Long Island, NY to a little town - Phillipston, MA. It was a culture shock. About 30 years ago, I started taking the game a bit more seriously after playing more Client golf. I wasn't very good. So I started taking lessons, practicing, and educating myself about equipment, including golf balls, grips & shafts. I spent a lot of time on the range (after a lesson) working on my game, reducing my handicap & getting down to a +2 handicap index at my peak in 2015. I have a very supportive wife who also enjoys the game of golf, she doesn't play but has caddied for me in US Senior Open qualifiers. Unfortunately, I've never qualified, I can't blame the caddy but it is a great learning experience & helps me identify my deficiencies. I really enjoy the game of golf, the walk, and friendships I love to tinker with equipment as well. My belief is, the golf shaft is the engine and getting the correct fit, whether it's with irons or woods, is a component of getting good results. I play recreationally now and also work as a Ranger, at Ventura CC, my DREAM JOB! That affords me the ability to play more often and watch the public play golf. It's really is a good learning experience & has been fun. This summer I started using The Grint app to keep better track of my play - GIR, Fairways, Putts, Misses & Hazard shots. It's been interesting. A thank you to MGS for opening my eyes & mind to using more technology. I shoot in the mid 60's to mid 70's and I still think putting the weakest part of my game. Although I can go on putting streaks. Tinkering there too! LOL Which leads to the Driver: I presently play Callaway Paradym X Driver & 3 wood. Here is a picture of my bag set up, including the NEW MyGolfSpy mallet putter head cover for my Scottie Cameron 5.5 putter. Irons are Titleist T200 with Nippon Modus3 105-gram stiff shafts. 2 Rescue clubs: Callaway Apex set at 22 degrees with a UST Mamiya (I love Italian golf shafts) 75-gram stiff shaft & Titleist TS2 19 degree with a Tensei stiff shaft. Since I predominately walk when playing golf and use a Bag Boy 4-wheel push cart, I find the cart bag to be the best fit on the push cart. For the Paradym X Driver, I was fit with the Hzrdus Black Smoke 60-gram stiff shaft with 3.5 torque. The driver is set at 9.0 degrees with a draw bias. I do tinker at 10 degrees as well, but Florida has been too wet for a higher ball flight. A few months ago, a golf buddy and I traded driver shafts. I have an old Callaway Subzero driver with a Project X, stiff shaft at 65 grams, which I traded for his Evenflow 50-gram 6.0 stiff shaft with 4.2 torque. I like the lighter weight of the Evenflow shaft and do alternate between the two shafts. They do perform differently. I can be more aggressive with the Hzrdus Black than the Evenflow shaft. I plan on testing both the Hzrdous Black & Evenflow shafts against the Newton Motion Shaft. It will be a comparison, both on the course & at the range. A nearby range recently installed Trackman. Plus, I have a TheStack launch monitor. Newton Golf Shafts are based on a Dot system - one dot for a slower swing speed up to 6 dots for the faster more powerful flat-bellied utes! I'm not flat-bellied nor a ute, so I'm expecting to go with the 4 Dot Motion Shaft - 60-gram shaft, 4.0 torque - 230 to 260 yd driving range. I'm taking a page out of Jamie's book concerning the weight of the shaft. Plus, at my swing speed, it is in the 95 to 100 mph range, the four dots should be best suited for me. About Newton Golf that impresses me: American Made product Seamless Shaft Design Driver Shaft which matches your swing Driver Shaft, which remains stable through impact (this reminds of the old Stulz Driver Shaft, which I still have in my Cleveland HiBore Driver. The stability claim by Newton Golf struck a cord. So I'm not too concerned about the 5.0 torque I'm expecting consistency with driving the ball. I'm a good driver of the ball now. My primary trajectory is slight draw, but I also like to fade the drive when necessary. Both the Evenflow & Hzrdus allow me to do so. There will be no doubt the Newton Motion Golf Shaft would remain in my bag, should it perform well. I'm a feel player and if the Motion Golf Shaft feels & performs well, it stays on my Callaway Paradym X Driver. I'm excited to see if the Newton Motion Driver Shaft helps elevate my game! Thank you again MyGolfSpy & Newton Golf, this is going to be fun! First Impressions: (10 out of 10) UnBoxing - My apologies had operator error trying to upload photo's & video! The Newton Golf Shafts were delivered in a Triangular cardboard box, clearly with the NEWTON Name displayed on the outside of the box. Above the NEWTON name, there are 6 dots. Clever! Notice the 6 Dots above the Newton Name on the box. Inside the box was a packing slip & a 48-inch, 1/4 inch thick, heavy gauged cardboard tube. Inside the tube were the two Newton Driver Shafts, each wrapped individually in plastic - a 4 dot & a 5 dot shaft, Made in the USA! Because of my swing speed and average drivers in the 258 to 269 range, Aki thought it best to try both shafts. Both Netwon shafts were gripped with Lampkin Grips, and the shafts included Golf Shaft Adapter Sleeves specifically installed for Callaway driver heads. The packaging of the shafts for shipping were impressive, packed int he heavy gauged cardboard cylinder. You can tell Newton Golf takes pride in protecting their product for shipping. A little added touch by Newton Golf, in my opinion, attached to the Adapter in each shaft is a new screw with new washers. You don't realize how the existing screw wears if you change the driver loft settings or shafts. Excellent Packaging! My primary driver shaft is a Hzrdus Black 6.0 Stiff, 60-gram, 3.4 torque, fitted for my Paradym X Driver. Driver is set at 9.0 Standard, Neutral since the Paradym X head has a draw bias. I've also been using an Even Flow Riptide 6.0, 50 gram stiff shaft. I like the lighter weight. Not as consistent as the stiffer Hzrdus Black. It will be good to compare the two shafts to both the Newton 4 Dot & 5 Dot shafts. Aesthetics (20 out of 20) I had to give the aesthetics of the shaft a full 20 points. To start, the heavy gauged cylinder tube the shafts were packed in was impressive. You may not think golf shafts are good-looking or even "sexy" however, the Newton Golf Shafts are good-looking and clean. Not a loud yellow. color or the standard vanilla black shaft. The color variation of the Motion Shaft is really cool. As I was pulling the shaft out of the tube, the shaft looked a blueish-green color. The sun hit the shaft, and it turned a pink to purple color. The Lamkin Grip velvet grip is a good touch, because the butt of the grip is red. The color of the grip just flows well into the shaft. The quality of the Newton Motion Golf Shaft out of the box, looks very good! The Numbers & Use in Play (19 out of 20) It was recommended by Newton Golf, I first use the Motion 4 Dot shaft. I replaced the Hzrdus Black 6.0 for the 4 Dot. I did not have the opportunity to go the range to demo nor warm up prior to the round, this is an important point. Newton Golf's website claim: "Distance Made Easy - Newton Motions Shafts - Our revolutionary golf shafts help you hit the ball straighter, longer, with less effort". 4 Dot Motion Shaft: First hole Par 5 - 483 yds, my thought was to swing easy with the 4 Dot Motion driver shaft & smooth it I did. The ball (ProV1) jumped off the club. A nice high launch, left center of the fairway (I'm right-handed) drive. My two golf buddies I'm playing with both uttered "WHOA" at the same time. The drive went 276 yds and was right down the middle. Below is the photo, you can see the dew and the ball trail line. Whoa. LESS EFFORT on the very first swing, the Newton Golf Claim was true. Three holes later, I used the driver again, I was getting looser. Hole #13 at Ventura CC a par 4 playing 379 yds, water down the left side, OB on the right. I tried stepping on the driver this time, but pulled it. It was not a hook, which was impressive, it was a pull that went straight down the left side of fairway and not in the water. The drive was 272yds, 102 yds in, but tree trouble in front of me (i did par the hole) Two holes later, another Par 5 playing 489yds and another pulled drive (Left) trying to swing aggressively, hitting a bunker 250 yds on the left, on the fly. I normally have anywhere from 220 to 237 yds into the green after a normal drive. Catching the bunker did stop the roll. But this was operator error. Once you convince yourself to swing smoother (with less effort) and trust the club, the Motion 4 Dot performs. I'm still gathering numbers and will post a follow-up. I do need to add, the size of the grip does make a difference to me. The grip installed came with Midsize standard, no wraps. I had requested Midsize plus 2 wraps. I attribute the pulls with the Motion 4 Dot to getting too handsy into the swing, due to the smaller grip. I've since regripped the shaft with the same Lamkin Midsize tour velvet with 2 1/2 wraps. It's a made difference with the 4 dot. I also just regripped the 5 dot as well, with the same Lamkin Grip and 2 1/2 wraps. Swing speed with the Motion 4 dot has been 92 to 95mph, with a ball speed consistently around the 150mph range (according to TheStack Launch Monitor) The ball definitely launches higher than the Hzrdus Black, even with my driver set at 9 degrees. Straighter, with Less Effort Claim is true, after 5 rounds. The Motion 5 Dot shaft - The Motion 5 Dot driver has allowed me to swing a bit more aggressively, without losing distance or accuracy in the 2 rounds I've used it. Motion 5 Dot Driver set up - 9.0 degrees, Standard, Neutral as recommended by Aki, at Newton Golf. The feel of the ball off the face is very good! There is a different feel between the ProV1, ProV1x & TP5x golf balls. The ProV1 feels softer (which is expected). The Pro V1x, reacts nicely and is as straight as the ProV. I've noticed more off line drives with the TP5x, as well as a harder feel of the ball off the club. The Taylor Made Tour Response, green stripe feels heavy off the club. #6 at Ventura CC - 490 yard Par 5 - This was perhaps the most impressive drive & feel. You can see by the photo below, that the drive must carry the water off the tee. You can be as aggressive as you want, by going further left. My aim point is the trap across the pond, on the right side of the fairway, with a draw off the trap. (you can see the bunker with a white circle covering it). I'm still in awe, LOL. Use less effort, and trust the club. My drive, 279 yds dead center over the bunker, I carried the bunker & hit a tree behind the bunker, the ball fell straight down. The ball jumped off the face of the club. The wind was down, more of a breeze. The feel of the ball (ProV1x) off the face was beautiful. I'll be posting more after hitting the range with Trackman. Range time can give additional numbers. Practice Makes...? PERFECT (20 out of 20) I've been impressed with the Newton Motion driver shaft from the very first tee shot. The feel of the ball off the club, the trajectory, the ease of the swing, feeling like an Ernie Els swing and watching the ball fly. Has the Newton shaft inspired me to practice? YES! I've been to the range more in the last 35 days, testing the Motion Driver Shaft, than I've been all year. Understanding the feel of the driver & swinging smoothly. Excited at the consistency of the ball flight and tighter dispersions. Here is a picture of the range balls used, a little worn. Talk about consistency off the tee. This is the first drive at the range with the 4 dot shaft - driver setting 10 degrees with a draw bias. The dotted line is the intended target line. I aimed right of the target line at a palm tree- drive went where I was aimed & straight! 2nd Drive - same target line as first trying to hit a draw - Nearly identical to the first drive: 3rd Drive I intended to hit a fade starting out over the dotted target line, it was a bit of a pull, but the results of the three drives were impressive: Weather was cool; I wasn't upset with yardages but more concerned with trajectory & consistency off the face. How could you not get excited with these results? The ball was going where aimed! Also, I'm so impressed how swinging the driver smoothly resonates with swinging other clubs in the bag. it gives you positive reinforcement! The Good, the Bad, the Inbetween (17.5 out of 20) The Good: The Motion Shaft. The 4 Dot is very good. It is important to get fitted. At this point, even with one less round, I'm seeing the Motion 5 Dot feeling better. We are coming up on colder weather, and after speaking with Aki, at Newton Golf, his suggestion is to use the 4 Dot Motion shaft in colder weather. Very interesting. (BTW) He was spot on with the weather issue! I feel the driver is the best club in my bag. I've had the confidence to step onto the tee box, pick an aim point out, and hit my drive to that target. The shaft is the engine to gives me that confidence. Thus far, the Motion 4 & 5 Dot Driver Shafts give me confidence! That is good! The Bad/InBetween - This is where I deducted points. The Lampkin Grip installed was Midsize standard no wraps. I do believe it affected the feel of the Motion 4 Dot shaft. It was not as bad as the Motion 5 Dot - but pulling the drives was an issue. I've since regripped both drivers with the same Lampkin Midsized Tour Velvet grip, but with 2 1/2 wraps. The feel is much better and I'm no longer pulling the drives. Also, the length of both the Motion 4 & 5 Dot shafts are 3/4 inch longer, than my two driver shafts: Hzrdus Black & Even Flow Riptide. It does not appear to be a liability, I thought I measured the shafts correctly during the Newton Zoom call. https://youtube.com/shorts/9JJJGDTo9Lw?feature=share Play It or Trade It - (10 out of 10) Playing it! The technology of the Newton Motion Driver shaft is excellent. Newton Golf's marketing lives up to the hype. I was not disappointed at all by the performance of the Driver Shaft. Golf is a game of trust & the Newton Motion Shaft gives you that trust. While standing on the tee! Look at that shaft, in the light the color changes from a greenish blue to a purple with pink tinge. I love the colors! Another reason for "Playing It", how solid the ball feels coming off the club. The feedback off the driver face are solid strikes! The Launch Angles are consistent. It's my opinion the Newton Motion Driver Shaft is a product for all players no matter your handicap. If you are seeking that magic of swinging smooth with great results, Newton Golf has the product for you! CONCLUSION - If you read nothing else, I'll conclude with, invest in a Newton Motion Driver Shaft! The technology put into the Motion Shaft is revolutionary. Change the way you think of a driver shaft flex, because Newton Golf has simplified how to choose your driver shaft, with their Dot system. Website: newtongolfco.com Newton Golf fits their Motion Shaft to any driver head by installing the proper Golf Shaft Adapter Sleeve on the shaft when ordered. Purchasing a Newton driver shaft can be much less expensive than purchasing a new driver. In my opinion, the shaft is the engine of the club! Newton Golf makes it easy to identify the shaft needed by using their own Dot System. Motion Flex Dot System ranges from 1 Dot (for slow swing speeds )to 6 Dots (faster swing speeds) progressing in whole number increments. Forget the old-school fitting method, which can be confusing to many: what's my kick point - High, Mid, Low, mid/high? what shaft flex do I need: L, R, S, X: what shaft weight, what torque should I use? What is torque? With Newton Golf, it's simple: 1). What's your swing speed? 2). What's your Average driving distance? (be honest) (* I believe the easiest method of determining which Dot is for you, find out your Driver Swing speed!) Match the two items to the Newton Motion Driver Shaft Flex Guide & the chart will guide you on which Motion Flex Dot (Flex) best corresponds to you. It's that simple! If you are on the cusp in between two dots, there are two great short videos to watch on the Newton Golf website. Both videos are narrated by Aki, Newton's technology Guru. Thank you, Thank you to MyGolfSpy & Newton Golf for this testing opportunity. This has been a fun test & educational too! In my opinion, The Newton Motion driver shaft lives up to its marketing & performance claims! I understand why many Champions Tour Players have made the switch to the Newton Motion Driver Shaft! The results are incredible! I will continue to post updates in this Newton Driver Shafts Forum. I'm so impressed with the Newton Motion Shaft! Thank you! Popular Post cksurfdude Posted October 2 Popular Post Posted October 2 (edited) MGS Forum Official Review Newton Motion driver shaft by cksurfdude; Oct. '24 Player Intro Hi all I'm Chuck; 68 this year and still in reasonably good shape; retired from almost 30 years in various positions in the investment industry; married now to my honey for over 13 lucky happy years. We live on Long Island, NY and golf at a private club near our house. As a golfer I'd describe myself and my game as... First picked up a club at age 53 1/2 but didn't start playing regularly until 59 (yep after retirement and moving into a new house). Average recreational bogey golfer working hard to get "better" in all aspects of my golf game. Typical score anywhere in the 90s but towards the end of the '24 season that's becoming low 90s more often. Don't maintain an official handicap so 19-20 rough guesstimate? Next season hope to break into, and score regularly in, the 80s. Play or practice 3-4 times a week .. always working to improve some part of my full swing or short game. Have a net and hitting mat set up in the garage, and a putting mat in the basement. Physically I'm kinda short and scrawny at just under 5'7" and about 155 or so lbs, and of course at my age have some arthritis and mobility issues .. so no I'm not bombing 300 yarders! I'd figured out early on that I'd need to develop good swing technique to play this game. .. my honey and I looking back down the 18th at Arnold Palmer's Latrobe CC .. yes that is my shirt and no I don't usually wear bold and bright like that I don't track game stats - although I do plan to collect some data for this test - but can tell you the latter half of this season... I'm getting better at landing in or not very far off (i.e. playable, not in jail) the fairway 4-5 of 7 drives per 9 holes, or approx 57-71% with improving swing technique my average distance is stretching from 200 to almost 225 typical misses are a high-right block (I'm RH'ed) or a low-left pull; the old slice-eroo and the nasty topped shot have become much more rare typical shot shape is straight-ish, with sometimes a bit of a fade or a draw (but these are not by design; although I hope to start to develop that skill as my new course has a lot of doglegs!) The Driver Currently gaming a Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max 12° with a Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue 45/A. Very happy (for now lol) with this combo (self selected; not from a fitting). Yep 12 degree head - definitely helps my moderate swing speed get a good launch and trajectory, as does the lighter weight and softer flex shaft. .. notice how the OG Spy bag tag / putting target (tho it's never been used as that) coordinates with the bag? .. the colorful driver and fairway head covers were gifts from my honey .. MLA putter is from an older forum review So funny story about me and my driver - before just three or so seasons ago I did not even carry a driver in the bag! Struggled with it so badly... Somewhere along the line I'd picked up a Callaway Bertha Mini 1.5 which is an oversized head 3W and that was my tee shot club. Finally forced myself to start practicing with an actual driver and .. no surprise to anyone on here who's seen my posts in the "Club 'Ho" thread .. went through a few different heads and shafts. Last season I was really happy to be selected as the forum tester for the Callaway Paradym X driver - happy because that forced me to really kick it into gear to get serious about the driver and to get it going. In fact, that worked out so well for me that late this season it is one of my more dependable clubs and I actually look forward now to the next tee!! The Driver Shaft Grafalloy was a name I was not previously familiar with; it's made by True Temper and I learned about in the "Otto-Phlex Experiment" thread started by @azstu324. This shaft has been a huge, huge boost for me in getting my driver going. But me being me and not content to leave what's working well alone, I just had to test out other driver shafts. Part of the fun of the game for me is learning about all the different equipment and how it works and how it may, or may not, be helpful to me and my game. Yes yes I have been through several fittings in the past but actually do enjoy the trial and error experimentation process! Part of that comes from skiing and small sailboat racing as a kid, then surfing and windsurfing later on - which are all, let's call it, very gear-sensitive sports; e.g. what you use and how you use it, and in what conditions, directly affects how you perform. Between last year's driver test and this season's continuing quest I've demo'ed a bunch of different driver shafts, with a current quiver of five (yep fellow CHAers, FIVE)... .. c'mon tell me there's not an extra driver shaft kicking around somewhere in your garage! FYI a little more info on these shafts is covered in this post... https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/66895-newton-driver-shafts-2024-forum-review/?do=findComment&comment=1138501 But... .. the GPLB (Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue) is the current reigning champ (Aldila Ascent PL Blue 40/A a close second) and the one that the Newton Motion will be vying against for my affection. My Intro to the Newton Motion Shaft There was an article on the main site that piqued my curiosity, followed by a member review... .. which further intrigued me .. I wanted to try this! As it turns out, I was on an MGS Outing last Summer where one morning we did a little driver shaft swapping around / testing - @Erin B brought along a Newton 4 Dot (their dot system is covered later on) and handed it to me to try. I could tell right off I'm not a 4 Dot guy (maybe 3, maybe 2 - TBD via a virtual fitting; more later on) but otoh the smooth response and solid feel left me impressed even more curious. ================== ================== Additional posts: Virtual Fitting with Aki, CTO of Newton Golf... https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/66895-testers-announced-newton-driver-shafts/?do=findComment&comment=1140070 Grip minutiae... https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/66895-testers-announced-newton-driver-shafts/?do=findComment&comment=1140045 ================== ================== Unboxing Vid ..ok ok so I gave the whole production crew, including the sound boom operator, the day off and tried to do this myself... Highlights: super well packaged - strong, triangular packing box with the shafts inside a heavy(!), thick-walled tube (1/4") combo seems to be as crushproof as possible using conventional (and recyclable) cardboard first sight of these in the sunlight .. wow .. the finish is INCREDIBLE!! product is flawless - no scratches, smudges, epoxy drips, etc. adapters include a head screw (although I didn't need it; my driver head screw is the same thread as the one supplied) Another highlight for me: There was an unexpected surprise inside the box -- opened the first tube and took out a 2 Dot and a 3 Dot as had been arranged with Aki of Newton Golf during our virtual fitting call -- opened the second tube and pulled out .. a 1 Dot!! We'd been talking about World Long Drive and Aki had mentioned they have several competitors using a special "LD" edition 1 Dot. I think I'm most excited to give this one a go!! ================== ================== Newton Motion driver shaft -- THE REVIEW. First, some more about the shaft Newton's construction process is spineless - a different method vs traditional hand-rolling of prepreg pieces of carbon fiber around a central mandrel - theirs is a continuous winding and so there are no seams / no spine. This also means no extra Pure'ing step (no extra $$) required; and - you can change the hosel adapter settings on your driver without worry of exposing a spine (weak point). Their process is also designed to yield an elongated profile - think of it as a more constant curvature along the entire shaft's length - vs traditional measures of a firmer or softer handle end / middle section / tip (imagine an EI profile chart for those familiar). Hard to tell from these next two pics (grip end on the left; tip on the right) but I'm trying to show the difference in bend between the current gamer GPLB (Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue 45/A - lighter color) vs the Newton 2 Dot (50g - purple; see below for "Dot" system). The Newton has a higher bend point and more curve on the left (i.e. higher than the bend point)... (GPLB) (Newton 2 Dot) FYI: for a more detailed and much better explanation of the Newton shaft's curvature and EI profile, see this post by forum member @funkyjudge ... https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/62434-newton-driver-golf-shaft-review-2024/page/4/#findComment-1015103 Finding the right "Dot" Newton's explanation of their "Dot" system in their FAQs may be helpful here... "Newton Golf Shafts are all about the physics. The driver doesn’t know your age, your handicap, or your gender. The traditional categorization of ladies, senior, regular, stiff, etc. overgeneralize player profiles. So why should flexes be defined that way? We kept it simple, just check the Newton Flex guide to determine your flex (DOT)" Based on my prior trial & error experimentation with different driver shafts and what seemed to be working for me - a 45/A with a more active tip to help me launch the ball - it appeared the closest matchup to that might be the 2 Dot .. although I also thought a 3 Dot might work for me. After an incredibly informative virtual fitting video call with Aki of Newton Golf (more on that here: https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/66895-testers-announced-newton-driver-shafts/?do=findComment&comment=1140070) .. he decided the 2 Dot would be the best for me to start with, and for this review he also sent a 3 Dot for me to try on "a good swing day". Torque - fyi for anyone looking at the numbers in the flex chart and thinking, 'oh that's too high for me' - I'll again refer you to the virtual fitting link just above; in that post is more info on why Newton has designed that torque into their shafts and why they think it can benefit a majority of golfers. Another tidbit Aki had mentioned is "there's a right weight and flex" for everyone - so the best fit shaft for you may not be the one you'd initially expected (more on that later). Testing the shaft Newton says their shaft will load (store potential energy) and unload (release kinetic energy) better and more efficiently vs traditional construction shafts. As a result they state on their website... And from the FAQs on their website: "If a shaft does not load and unload smoothly, or if there is unnatural twisting of the shaft during the swing, our brain will hesitate to put a smooth swing and start to compensate or manipulate the club in the middle of a swing. All of those things slow down the club head speed and accuracy." So... Better distance AND better dispersion?? (.. and without taking more lessons?! haha) This is what I'll be focusing on during testing - if any one of those claims is true, then that would be a win vs my current gamer. Testing method Pretty straightforward: starting at the range and continuing same process on the course... Do I like the feel and response? Am I seeing better ball flights / better distance vs the GPLB? Am I seeing better dispersion vs the GPLB? Add'l. step - if the 2 Dot is better vs the GPLB, then is the 3 Dot better for me than the 2? Evaluation is a combination of subjective - eyeballing the ball flights; and objective - capture data at the range (Swing Caddie SC4) and on the course (GPS watch). ..ok on to the... -- SCORING CATEGORIES -- First Impressions (8 out of 10) + Positives: Mentioned above .. an incredibly informative virtual fitting call. Have read other forum member comments about their positive experiences with Newton customer service. Extremely sturdy protective packaging (see "Unboxing" vid above if you dare). High end quality "fit and finish". Ordering process very simple and straightforward (all on one web page). Price ($275) is super competitive vs other top driver shafts. 30 Day trial period - can swap for another Dot. - Negatives: Grip - only mention on their website is within a horizontal scroll of pics/info on the product page (https://newtongolfco.com/products/motion-driver-shaft); no other explanatory text anywhere. There is only ONE option... Turns out it's not a bad grip (better texture and compound, imho, vs the ubiquitous Tour Velvet) and I kept it on for the test. If you call to order you can get different sizes - n/a on a web order. Nit-picking here but amongst the other informative FAQs was one with no answer that I would've liked to have seen... Aesthetics (10 out of 10) First seeing a pic of these online, I did not think I was going to like the purple color, but .. looking at it live first time in the sun it is eye-catching!! Iridescent and hue-shifting as you move it. Very cool. Minimal graphics with no high contrast colors make for a, let's call it, clean and sophisticated look. Another plus - those iridescent/hue-shifting colors fade to a flatter, darker and non-distracting finish at address. Very smart! Although my testing period was somewhat brief, the shafts were in and out of my bag .. and my separate range practice bag .. many times - none show any signs of wear on the finish. On-Course (38 out of 40) But first - some range time to get to know the new piece of golf equipment prior to taking it out on the course (plus it was also a chance to test out my newly acquired SC4 personal launch monitor). Initial test and saw results like these... --> "W1" left = GPLB and "W3" right = Newton 2 Dot Note: distance numbers were under-read a bit (maybe the range balls?) but the shot patterns and relative differences between the two shafts are consistent. Differences were not huge but favored the Newton ... ignoring that first oopsie with the Newton which was my very first hit with it (limited myself to exactly three balls like in a fitting). During my early range sessions one word popped into my head = "forgiving"... .. can a shaft be called "forgiving"? In this case I unmistakably felt a, let's call it, correction happening on mis-hits - this is their design goal for the torque built into the shaft .. as evidenced through further range sessions... --> "W1" left = GPLB; "W3" right = Newton 2 Dot --> "W3" left = Newton 2 Dot; "W1" right = GPLB * So Newton gave me better launch, better average distance and better overall dispersion! (win-win-win!) Well yep somehow I managed to delete all the discrete 3 Dot data but after spending a little more time with the Newtons I was regularly seeing results like this... --> numbers indicate where the majority of balls were generally going ... "2" = GPLB; "3" = Newton 3 Dot; "1" = Newton 1 Dot (the 1 will be further tested in the Spring) ... OK, time to go out onto the course with... .. GPLB and 2 Dot. Here's the tale of the tape: -- forgot the Torque value .. turns out both shafts are listed at 5.0 Add'l fyi - on their respective websites, Grafalloy mentions the GPLB is suited for a "deliberate tempo" and Newton talks about "smooth swings". Here's one example of my on-course notes (ok ok we've all seen the Beautiful Mind memes) that I feel well illustrates the overall better performance I saw with the Newton (red "N" = Newton 2 Dot, blue "G" = GPLB)... * The 2 Dot clearly has a better average distance and a better overall dispersion vs the GPLB. Here's the same plot with some hand markup to try to show dispersion trends... .. very rough dispersion ovals and trend lines .. but .. shows the Newton as the winner. Yeah this was just one example but I post it as it was very, literally, illustrative of most of my on-course experiences testing the GPLB vs the 2 Dot. Here's some stats I collected: These are averages over my testing period - during which I'm happy to report that my distance and dispersion with the Newton 2 Dot generally kept improving!! And - an important "and" - in further testing, as shown above, the 3 Dot worked even better for me!! Performance Metrics Feel and Response -- 10/10 After testing out the different Dot weights & flexes, I could definitely feel the loading/onloading effect! Very different than the GPLB and I definitely like the feel and repsonse of the Newton. And as my results showed, I must be getting a more efficient energy transfer - as Newton claims. Stability and Forgiveness -- 15/15 Forgiveness is a word that popped into my head early on in range testing - not just on mis-hits but while intentionally trying to hit off the toe or heel, or high or low. Felt this effect out on the course, too. Confidence & Playability -- 15/15 I very quickly got completely comfortable with this shaft, and in a short time felt like I could just wind up and swing away .. without feeling like I needed to be careful and "guide" the clubhead onto the ball. Distance -- 18/20 Yes, improved over the GPLB; while (darn) no 300 yarders for me .. I had more balls carry my "good" distances and so my overall average driving distance was better. Dispersion -- 18/20 Definitely improved over the GPLB; while yeah there are still operator error misses that the Newton cannot fix those misses weren't as bad .. more mis-hit balls landed at the edge or just off the fairway. Overall Performance -- 19/20 Love this shaft! It is now IN THE BAG!! Minor deductions for distance and dispersion as this shaft is really great but no magic wand as in instantly transforming my driving into a Tour pro's (I don't that was an unrealistic expectation, do you? ) Performance Total = 95 / 100 So 95% x 40 points available = 38 for this category. Hey there was even a first ever for me birdie on a Par 5 thanks to a first ever for me "monster" drive right down the middle on this hole... (.. zoom in to see yellow circle .. ball is in a previously unknown to my tee shot location!) (.. my 1 1/2 ft birdie putt after a nice layup and a short GW approach!) The Good, The Bad, The In-Between (19 out of 20) Good: feel, response and .. performance. Manufacturer's bold claims, re: distance, dispersion, improvement .. all confirmed!! Bad: hmmm. Guess I'll repeat two minor negatives from above - only one grip option (or none); one important (to me, anyway) answer to a FAQ on the website was missing. In-Between: gonna answer quite literally and mention that if you think you are in-between two Dots - yes try both if you can, but if you cannot then myself and it seems a few others ended up having better results with the higher Dot (e.g. for me that was the 3 Dot vs the initial 2). Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20) Based on my testing criteria outlined above... Do I like the feel and response? Am I seeing better ball flights / better distance vs the GPLB? Am I seeing better dispersion vs the GPLB? Add'l. step - if the 2 Dot is better vs the GPLB, then is the 3 Dot better for me than the 2? The answer to each of these questions is a solid, resounding YES! My last two full rounds of the '24 season I played the 3 Dot and was very consistent hitting driver off the tee and getting the ball into play! So, yeah, golf dudes the Newton Motion is now my new gamer driver shaft!! * Note - my testing will resume in the Spring, again comparing Dots against each other. The more I swung the Newton, the more comfortable - and confident - I got with it! ... Total Score = 95 out of 100! ... Conclusion... For me, an average recreational bogey golfer, the chance to trial different Dot shafts at the same time was a big advantage in finding the right fit. Even starting with what turned out to be the second choice, it still yielded better results (range and course) vs my then current gamer .. which I had thought was working well for me, too! My testing showed that, for me, Newton's performance claims turned out to be true - I saw both better average distance and overall dispersion with this shaft in my driver, and I could feel the loading/unloading (energy transfer) effect. Dare I say this shaft is actually helping me swing "better" and not "harder"..? I firmly believe for a majority of golfers a Motion driver shaft could help their driver game. Hey c'mon the thing helped this swing get the ball out there on a sloppy meh swing day... ck driver swing (bad) DTL.mp4 (.. you can kinda see the ball taking off nicely there .. despite the hacker swing!) ... Add'l Q&A ... Who Is It For? For a golfer looking to upgrade their driver performance without buying a whole new one, and looking to upgrade their on-course results without more time and effort / more lessons and practice .. the Newton Motion driver shaft is definitely worth a try! Worth mentioning here that Newton's penetration into the Champions Tour is growing, so that's a great testimonial for a lot of us senior golfers. Who Is It Not For? Just speculating here, but a player who is particularly "handsy" with the driver or who has an especially abrupt and harsh transition down into the ball may not benefit from this shaft. Also someone who prefers a specific feel like a counterbalanced shaft, or something such as a stiff handle or a stiff tip section. Would you recommend the product to a friend? Absolutely, yes, based on the confidence and improvements it has given me off the tee - really think everyone should trial one of these. Would you buy the product yourself with your own money? Absolutely, yes, based on my overall positive experience with it after testing. ............................ Scoring Summary... Popular Post ILMgolfnut Posted October 2 Popular Post Posted October 2 (edited) Introduction Hello fellow Spies! I'm Jeff, golfing since 1979, never very good; my lowest handicap index has been 19.2. I break 100 most of the time, 90 occasionally. I was out of the game for almost 20 years due to a shoulder injury and a new obsession to replace golf (marathon running). After a decade of running, the motivation was gone and I eventually returned to golf in 2022, getting fitted for all new clubs except a putter. He put me on a Mizuno ST-X driver with a Diamana Red 50 gram x5ct, regular flex shaft. Love the Mizuno and it keeps me in play, most of the time, but I realized a shaft upgrade might be in order to improve launch angle (mine is too low, which in turn reduces carry distance). So I've been looking into driver shafts for a few months, and the Newton was at the top of my list. When this test was announced, I put my name in for consideration, and by some miracle I was selected! Thanks to Newton and to the MGS staff for giving me this awesome opportunity! Quick synopsis of my game: After 40+ years of banana balls, I've finally learned how to hit the occasional draw and turn the slice into a fade. Drive distance is 200-ish, maybe a touch more if I catch it right. Over the past six months I combined training with Rypstick and Fit For Golf (tested FFG for the MGS site as well) and gained about 13 mph of clubhead speed, but it's still only at 85 mph, which is right on the borderline for the Newton 2-dot and 3-dot in their 6-dot system. I have a Garmin R10 launch monitor and plan to use that for direct comparisons with my current Diamana gamer on the range; since launch angle and carry have been my bugaboos, I'll specifically look to see if those improve with the Newton. I have also located some ranges in my area with Toptracer technology to provide supplemental/supporting data (confirming the Garmin numbers, basically). Newton advertises that its shafts improve dispersion, with extra distance as an added bonus. On the course, we'll see if those claims are supported, and as a side effect, if my scores improve. Both the 2-dot and 3-dot also weigh 50 grams, so that allows for a good apples-to-apples comparison with my Diamana as opposed to a different weight which would introduce another variable. The stock Newton grip is from Lamkin, which I've never used, so I plan to get it gripped with the Winn grip I currently use, again to remove an extra variable (I work in medical research, so I think in those terms on a daily basis). Interesting Newton-related coincidence One of the Tour pros using Newton shafts is PGA Tour Champions pro Ken Duke. Duke and I grew up in the same small Arkansas town and graduated from the same high school, 9 years apart. Even weirder, Duke and I both had surgery for scoliosis as teenagers, at the same hospital; his scoliosis was worse than mine, according to his Wikipedia page. He is clearly the best golfer ever from our school. I am not. Fitting I had a 20-minute Zoom call with Aki Yorihiro, Chief Technology Officer of Newton Golf, on October 15. We discussed various aspects of my game and the specifications of my current driver shaft. Based on that, and on the clubhead speed noted above, Aki said he would be sending me both the 2 dot shaft and the 3 dot shaft, cut to the correct length and with adapters for my Mizuno driver head. So I will be comparing both versions with the Diamana Red, once they're gripped. Unboxing The package arrived while I was out of town, with the unboxing the next day upon my arrival. I found a triangular box, containing a stiff cardboard tube. Although I did not have the stock Lamkin grips installed, they sent them to me anyway in the triangular box. Opened the box, opened the top of the tube, removed the shafts which were in clear plastic bags inside the tube. It struck me immediately how iridescent the shafts were, for lack of a better word. Although they are purple, they take on the hue of what is around them, like my blue shirt in these photos. Very eye-catching! It took me a couple of days to find a golf shop that had my preferred grips in stock, but finally found them and had the grips installed on Sunday afternoon. The 3 dot shaft looks like this, ready to take to the course: First impressions My swing is a very inconsistent thing, so all opinions have to be viewed through that lens. Having said that, I feel very comfortable swinging either flex Newton so far. In two range sessions, my launch angle is better and I'm getting improved distance with either shaft, at least subjectively. The Garmin and the Toptracer are not showing that much better distance in the data so far, but I'm still experimenting with that as well. A bit to my surprise, the 3-dot seems to have the advantage in both distance and launch angle. But it's early, and I haven't taken them on the course to see how they do when I have a pencil and card in my pocket. Aesthetically, they're sharp, and purple isn't normally one of my favorite colors, but these look NICE! I wouldn't normally care how a shaft looks; it's a tool to help me do (hopefully) what I want to do. But these perform and are pleasant to look at. High-End Materials: Uses premium carbon fiber materials for increased durability and performance. What They will be Testing? Selected testers will receive a Newton Motion Driver Shaft, complete with tip and grip, based on a virtual fitting session. You will assess the performance of the shaft in terms of increased distance, launch control, stability, and feel. Testers will provide in-depth feedback on whether the shaft meets Newton's performance claims and improves overall driving performance. Please welcome and congratulate our testers! @ZJeb67 @tdroma98 @cksurfdude @ILMgolfnut Congratulations cksurfdude, William P, Jean D and 2 others 5 Quote Vernest Parker III, Best day ever out on the course
DougJ Posted October 2 Posted October 2 6 hours ago, ILMgolfnut said: Introduction Hello fellow Spies! I'm Jeff, golfing since 1979, never very good; my lowest handicap index has been 19.2. Will be interesting to see which shaft I end up with for the test. I have a Garmin R10 launch monitor and plan to use that for direct comparisons with my current Diamana gamer on the range; since launch angle and carry have been my bugaboos, I'll specifically look to see if those improve with the Newton. On the course, we'll see if I'm hitting more fairways and/or getting more distance, and (cross my fingers) if my scores come down. Both the 2-dot and 3-dot also weigh 50 grams, so that allows for a good apples-to-apples comparison with my Diamana as opposed to a different weight which would introduce another variable. I understand that the stock Newton grip is from Lamkin, which I've never used, so I plan to get it gripped with the Winn grip I currently use, again to remove an extra variable (I work in medical research, so I think in those terms on a daily basis). Unboxing There will be fitting first to determine the proper dot number for me (as noted above, I'm expecting a 2 or 3 dot; the range is 1 to 6). Once that happens, tune in for the unveiling! Also will document the regripping. Final Review Does the Newton kick the Diamana out of my bag or do I keep looking for a shaft upgrade? We will find out together! I’m really forward to your evaluation. im deciding to keep TM head (great sound) and upgrade shaft or start the journey from the ground (tee box) up have fun William P, ZJeb67, ILMgolfnut and 1 other 4 Quote Hit it hard and hope to find it!!

GolfSpy_APH Posted October 6 Author Posted October 6 This will be a fun one to follow. I've used the Newton shafts here and there and think they are very well made and a great product overall. That said I have found other who have performed better for me. My belief is that they are just a bit too heavy for my swing...at least the models I've tried. Popular Post cksurfdude Posted October 7 Popular Post Posted October 7 It's here! Somewhat ironically this cost more than a Newton shaft, but I plan to take it to the range to help gather some data for the test. cksurfdude Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Hey everyone -- my Intro section has been added above; please see... Quick playing update - played 9 today; 6 driver shots (hybrid off #9) .. two left misses; one ran through the dogleg into the right rough; and 3 good shots against a light breeze of 200, 205, 210 all near enough to the center of the fairways.
