I've bought a Mizuno 6iron Demo shaft and a few different model heads to decide which one suits best before buying a Set, so by putting the 6iron shaft into 7iron heads it's soft step but if I go down the Grip an inch or more which I do because I only carry 6-7 club's aren't I changing that Step effectiveness but what happens with the ball movement. I'm hoping there's a few guys trying this out and can advise on the likely outcome? 🤔

I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…

That shaft in the 7 iron is soft stepping. In the 5 iron it is hard stepped. Choking down has nothing to do with tip flex. Tip trim is key here. Now you can explore more depending on what ball flight one wants. I build and set up my own clubs. I do play old school muscle back Macgregor blade irons. My set up is not normal to most standards. I soft step the 6 through PW with lead tape weight low on the muscle. For me it helps kick on the bottom end and get height. My 5 iron I have hard stepped to hit a boring trajectory and for feel on bump and runs. If I have to hit a high floater then that is what my 9 wood is for.

Now on CB and GI irons it is a different ball game. By design they already have the weight down low to get ball flight up. In a nutshell one has to find what combination fits them and their swing

Thanks for your feedback ☺️ very much appreciate it, I too use a 9 wood but depends on the weather and course. Do you have any ideas of why Lydia Ko goes down the Grip on every club she hits 🤔 I'd think you'd be better shortening the shaft plus for Driver she T's the ball low and on the odd shot I'd do that wind etc but that's natural for her? Besides my woods I use either Mizuno MP32-55 9 iron and SW ...

Agree with @cnosil 100%. That is most of it. Now I will add a maybe. Choking up on the shaft may provide some counterweight for her and her swing. Brooke Henderson does the same thing. It is all in the balance of the club and everyone is different there. Good example is I like all my weight at the head because it helps me feel the club in the backswing. Others may like weight in the butt end to counterweight it. Nothing wrong or right here it is just what works for an individual.

I also see you stated you slip the 9 wood in for certain courses. That is the way I do things. I normally carry 11 clubs right now since it is that time of the year, I slipped the 9 wood back in and I am carrying 12. Our traps frankly suck so I carry a low bounce 58* Vokey. If I play neighboring courses with fluffy greenside bunkers, I slip in either an old Hogan Sure Out or Ping Eye2 SW. Yes I like the options for switching clubs around for certain courses and conditions. I always say golf is so individual subjective to do what works for you and your game. I am also somewhat famous in saying that there is no one etched in stone way to play this game whether it is the swing or the equipment. LOL I have gotten into some flack on another site from some of the proper "golf gurus" on that last but I stand by it.

If someone like you wants help, I am glad to help. I will tell you that something may work for me but try to see if it works for you. It may or may not. I will never tell someone that my way is the only way.

On equipment I am as brand agnostic as it comes and also era agnostic too. Just because I play old blade irons I do not look or talk down someone who plays CBs GIs or even full hybrid sets. I always say play what works and do not be afraid to ask questions. My .02 FWIW

It could also be that they played ill fitting hand me down clubs and had to choke down on the grip to be able to swing and it just became a comfort thing.

Big thanks @cnosil 👏 I don't subscribe so didn't see that article I'm just looking at the free online version 😊

I don’t subscribe either, just found it by doing a google search to validate my thought and to find a concrete reference to  answer to your question

Yeah I like Mizuno but if I like another brand club and I've had them all in the past I'll use it,  really appreciate your feedback ☺️

I've had New club's but didn't score any better with Titleist T200 irons tried steel and graphite and Ping 430 irons, my old Mizuno got the same number on my card so sold them....

Yep the ill fitting hand me down clubs could also be a factor. Yes there could be a hand full of reasons. Like I say if it works then it works

If you look at the ads for new clubs the main selling point is distance. Now I will admit shafts have come a long way into tuning clubs. Lofts are another ball of wax too. Oh yes that brings in the debate of loft creep and jacked lofts on irons. I will not debate on that either. On my old stuff I know my lofts and how far I can hit a certain club. It does not bother me one bit that someone plays a PW the same loft as my antique 8 iron. I play my game with the stuff I know how to play with. I always encourage others to play what they want to play to enjoy the game. Do not give 2 rips if it is super modern or antique just play and have fun is my bottom line now. I consider myself the most brand and even era agnostic on here or any other golf board.
