After some discussion with a few others that live here in Texas, I got to thinking there has to be a better way to set-up a meet-up that happens more then once a year and in different locations to help those that might not be able to make a meet-up because of it's location. After getting the votes of approval by some of the other spies, The Texas Spy Showdown Tour was initiated! (Titles a work in progress, so work with me. Could also be a perfect opportunity for Tour sponsorship if any entity is interested in a prime marketing opportunity to establish yourself in the middle-aged, mid-handicap amateur's market of Texas)

The Idea is that there will be 4 Tour Stops (approximately every 2-3 months) around the State of Texas, hitting the Major Metro areas that make up the Texas Triangle (Austin, DFW, Houston & San Antonio) to allow the best opportunity for spies in the area to be able to attend at least one of the meet-ups throughout that year. Each Tour Stop will have a Spy that is local (or local-ish) that will help select 3 - 4 good course options (that aren't expensive but also ain't the worse goat track out there either) that will be voted on as the course of play for that stop. The course voting will take place about a 1 - 1.5 months out, and will also serve as the RSVP where each spy that can/will plan to attend will get with the Spy hosting and let them know. Additionally, once the course & head count is known for that Tour Stop, it'll then be decided which actual day(s) & Tee-Time(s) will work best for everyone; With that info, the Tour stop will be officially finalized, so everyone can get it planned & on their calendars.

Ideally, it'll be that these meet-ups are area specific locations that can repeat every year, so that it is easier to plan to make one, or more, of these meet-up(s). Nothing will be too formal for each Tour Stop, (regarding Dates/days, times, #of rounds, etc.) so that way those that plan to attend will be able to have a little flex room to determine which day(s) works best & if multiple rounds will be played when we get closer to the actual date of the Tour Stop; This way, there is something at least somewhat set though, so everyone can plan for it ahead of time. Also, hoping this will help foster more of a locale specific community for us Spies and make it easier for us to get together to have fun and play some good golf throughout the year. But, you don't have to live in Texas to make the Tour, anyone & everyone is invited that can make it!

This Tour ain't perfect, since it doesn't currently include any of west Texas in it's current iteration (and El Paso is like, 11hrs East of San Antonio) but that doesn't mean that as this gets underway, we don't add additional Stops, or have Dual-Locations on some of the stops that take place within the Tour each year. But this seems like a good start to me, and I want to put something together to hopefully get this going and maybe see it become something that will grow & expand in the future.

So with saying all that, there is a Poll attached to this post (I think... I Hope) with Time Frame and Location options for each of the 4 stops I'm suggesting we start with. Hit up the poll and help decide how we set-up this tour and where you would most like to be at for each stop. I believe I set it up so that you can select multiple options per question, so select all the options that make the most sense to you so that way we can see what would have the best chances of getting the most spies together for each stop. The Poll should expire on 10/28, that way there's 2 weekends and a full week that the poll is up for everyone to vote, and maybe we can get the first Tour Stop under way by the end of 2024.

Last Note: My idea is that each Tour stop will have a Spy (or spies, if multiple people want to help), that is (are) local to the area, Volunteer to get the stops course location options determined & best time(s) to play poll set-up. This way, they have the most knowledge on the best courses in the area to play (hell, maybe even have a connection to some nice places that we wouldn't normally get access too) and also be better fit to work with those that will attend to get the info needed so that the reservation for the Day(s) & Tee-Time(s) can be maybe more easily. I have no problem helping getting things going for each Tour Stop, but hopefully this will become something where each stop will have a Spy (or Spies) that take charge of that Tour Stop, and makes it more like a personal invite for others to come to your area and experience & enjoy the same golf that you do throughput the year. If your interested in being the local spy for a Tour Stop, respond to this post and let us know and all those that are interested will be noted in my initial post under each Tour Stop they want to help with.

My initial thought would be once a quarter and if we want to make this an ongoing thing, make it the same week/month in that quarter every year.

A couple of things to think about.

March is spring break time.

End of May is typically end of school

December is tough

Yeah that was my original intent: have this be a set week of a specific month for each quarter, that way it's more easy to plan around for everyone.

And I felt the same on the December timing, but was trying to think of a good time frame when it was cooler but worked around Thanksgiving & Christmas. Also didn't want to push it too far into Jan/Feb when it does typically get real cold during those months around the State.

Yeah, the Jan/Feb may work best in Houston or San Antonio.

All good thoughts. I actually like the idea of it being during spring break - I can bring the family and everyone gets a trip out of it.

Makes sense to me that we'd do Houston or San Antonio early from a weather standpoint.

OK everyone, @Josh Parker @Rico_de_Gallo @Prodigal Duffer @ZackS, looks like we have a pretty decent set-up from the poll for the timing of doing this Spy Tour around Texas; below are the results that I think we can start with or now:

  • Tour Stop 1: Winter/Spring, 2nd week of March - San Antonio Area
  • Tour Stop 2: Spring/Summer, 3rd Week of May - Austin Area (Last week of May can work as well, but we can narrow this down more when we do the actual date preference poll about a month out from the stop)
  • Tour Stop 3: Summer/Fall, 3rd week of September - Dallas/Fort Worth Area (Last week of September can work as well...)
  • Tour Stop 4: Fall/Winter, 1st week of December - Houston Area (2nd week of December can work as well...)

Tour Stop Lead Spies (those willing to help set-up each tour stop location & set-date) currently for each stop:

Let me know what y'all think and if y'all want, we could try and get the first stop started this winter here in December and try to set-up a day or two for Houston area if a few people are interested.

LFG!!!

Do we want to set 1 or 2 days up?  Do we want a budget amount for green fees?

I'm down for a 2-day trip, and I'd say for a good budgeted amount for fees would be around $50-$100/round. If we do 2-days, that would keep the cost of the 2 to 3 rounds that we might could play down to a reasonable cost.

Also, I figured we could use this post thread to get some of this info hashed out, and then I'd post a new thread to the Spy Meet-Ups channel with the set Tour Dates and Locations shown above, that way we might be able to get a few more people to see it and maybe get a few others spies here in Texas or the surrounding areas that would want to join in as well.

OK, @Josh Parker @Rico_de_Gallo  @Prodigal Duffer @ZackS, if y'all are interested in trying this out here for the first time this upcoming December in Houston, since we don't currently have anyone local to the Houston area in this discussion, I went ahead & looked up some possible places that we might could play as well as date options.

Dates Wise, we have the 1st & 2nd week of December as being the best dates for everyone, so we could do the following days:

  • Weekends (Friday, Saturday & Sunday): Nov. 29th - Dec. 1st[Thanksgiving Weekend] or Dec. 6th - 8th
  • Weekdays (Monday - Thursday): Dec. 2nd - 5th or Dec. 9th - 12th

Weekdays are cheaper for Tee Times and hotels too if we want to do a 2-day meet-up. Since this is the first one, I'm going to plan to make it no matter what days & times we do, but if one day works best for everyone, that works for me. I'm game for 2 rounds per day, so like a morning & afternoon round, to try and make the most of it. Could also do a full round at a course, then head over to a Par 3 course for an afternoon round to still play some but not be a true full round as well.

Golf Course Options & Info, with the pricing I can confirm online work are as listed below (tried to pick ones that would be nice to play at, as well as cost prohibitive so it's not too expensive):

  • Sharpstown Park Golf Course - 6600 Harbor Town Houston, TX 77036
    • Weekend Fee: $26, Weekday Fee: $18, 1/2 Cart:$16
  • Memorial Park Golf Course [Texas Children's Houston Open played here] - 1001 E Memorial Loop Dr, Houston, TX 77007
    • Weekend: $140, Weekday: $120, 1/2 Cart: $20 (only $38 or $30 for Houston residents though if anyone lives in the area)
  • Cypresswood Golf Club [2 courses on site, so different options for multiple rounds] - 21602 Cypresswood Drive • Spring, TX 77373
    • Both courses have been used for lower-tier PGA events and tour qualifiers
    • Traditions [Older-style champions course, designed by the architect that designed The Bandit]: Weekday:$68  Weekend:$95 [carts included in price]
    • Cypress Course: Weekday: $48, Weekend: $63 [carts included in price]
  • Wildcat Golf Club [2 courses on site, so different options for multiple rounds] - 12000 Almeda Road Houston, TX 77045
    • same price for both courses, includes cart fee
    • Weekday: $77, Friday: $99, Weekend: $110
  • Augusta Pines Golf Club [PGA Champions tour payed here in the early 2000s]-  18 Augusta Pines Dr | Spring, TX 77389
    • Weekday: $79, Weekend: $99 [includes cart in price]
      • Can only reserve a Tee-Time 5 days out, so might be difficult to know when we'd get to play here until the week before we played
  • Tour 18 Golf Course of Houston - 3102 FM 1960 East Humble, TX 77338
    • Weekday: $75, Weekend: $105 [price appears to include cart fee]
  • HGA's Gulf Wortham Golf Course [Houston Amatuer Golf Assoc. course] - 7000 Capitol Street Houston, Texas 77011
    • Weekday: $35, Weekend: $43, 1/2 Cart: $15
  • Pearland Golf Club - 3123 Flower Field Lane, Pearland, TX 77584
    • Weekday: $52-$56 Friday: $62-$66, Weekend: $80, 1/2 Cart: $22
  • Houston National Golf Club - 16500 Houston National Blvd, Houston, TX 77095
    • Weekday: $64, Weekend: $74 [Price appears to include cart fee]
  •  Melrose Golf Club [18-hole Par 3 course] - 401 Canino Road - Houston, Tx 77076
    • Weekday: $12 Weekend: $15, Push Cart: $4 [Price is good for all-day access too on the course
  • East River 9 [9-hole Par 3 course, lighted and a very nice & challenging Par-3 Course]
    • Weekday: $42 Weekend: $48 [no info on push cart rental]
    • I think would be a fun place to do in the afternoon no matter what, as it could be a fun & quick 1.5-2hr little wind-down round prior to everyone leaving/settling in for the night

* Courses I'd recommend from looking things up online and talking with friends & family that have played at a few of these courses.

I noted my opinions on the course to play above, but let me know what y'all think and we can discuss it further. I'm still going to create a new thread at the end of the week for the info on the re-occurring tour and time frames and the first Tour stop that we will be playing so that way it can get fresh eyes on it to see if anyone else wants to join in.

hahaha the 2nd week of March would win in the poll for San Antonio (wife bday)

I'll get starting drafting up ideas and what not, but a non 0% chance I would have to miss playing pending family schedules/events

Haha, well these dates aren't firm or anything, just sort of a good idea on when it'll occur so that we can get something planned; we can always adjust dates to get it to better fit schedules.

  • Wildcat Golf Club [2 courses on site, so different options for multiple rounds] - 12000 Almeda Road Houston, TX 77045
    • same price for both courses, includes cart fee
    • Weekday: $77, Friday: $99, Weekend: $110

I've played the Lakes course at Wildcat. Solid place. Has range and putting green. Course was in good shape.

Fun track. Lots of elevation changes and some very interesting hole layouts with unique fairways. Played last summer, carts didn't have GPS at the time

Define 2 days?

  • Day 1 - Travel and then Golf
  • Day 2 - Golf and then Travel

I guess, the question is better asked, assume 2 rounds per visit/city, What tee time range to target

Yeah, figured that would be the assumed timing depending on when everyone could make it down there for the 2 days.

1st day drive in then meet-up to play the first round, then 2nd day do an Early Tee-Time.

If some people want to get there early day 1, they could try for an early round before everyone gets there; and if people can stay late for day 2, they could try for a n evening round but most would leave out to travel back home in a timely manner.

Depending on the actual dates we'd like to do here in December, I could personally be good for 3 days actually, so it really depends on who will RSVP for each stop and what dates they say they are good for.

Those first 2 holes are pretty cool layouts; that last one is going to be rough for me lol I never seem to do well when you have to clear water right off the tee-box.

Question for everyone..... If we have no one in the Houston area currently, do we want to double up on one of the other locations for the first one in someone's home turf?  Just throwing out a thought.

Been laid up sick the last few days.  Will catch up and review.  I do know I have some travel coming up with my wife to visit our son, who's up north working full-time as a hockey official for USA Hockey, and that will eat up a decent chunk of my vacation and travel budget for the next 6 months because we'll likely have at most about a week's notice of when he'll get the assignment at which we're going to meet him, meaning our airfare is going to cost a lot.

ok, for dates Let's say the Dec. 2nd - 8th (monday - sunday) time frame for the week we'll do this first run, so we can start planning schedules. Let's plan for 3 days knowing not everyone can do all 3 days, but if you're able to make 1 or 2 days, a 3-day window will give us the best chance of playing with the most of us that can make the trip at all I'd think.

I'd say let's look at Austin & San Antonio surrounding area (since there only about 1hr a part) as that'll be a decent middle ground for most everyone. I know initially with the last one we tried to quickly do, everyone seemed good with playing The Bandit so I think that would be a good first course to try and good spot between Austin/San Antonio.

I'm going to make a new post in the Meet-Up group with the Main info we determined on locations &  time frames, and I'll add the info I just put above to let people know what we will be trying to put on here that first week of December.
