Been playing for under a year now, how long do I need to use to replace my club.

Welcome to the Forum!

No hard rule on when you need to change. It is all up to you and when you feel you are ready and have the money to spend.

As long as you are enjoying the game and happy with what you got you can stick with those clubs - if you are getting more serious and want to invest more in your game gonzo a demo day and try a bunch of clubs see what works the best and looks the best for you and go with that!

Welcome!

I will agree with the above statement.  It's all up to you and your golf game.  If you feel you have outgrown this set, go test out some at a demo day and see what works

Welcome @Hasy404 this is a great group. I agree with the above, and add this, when you get an opportunity to swing a different club and it's better for you then I would change.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

Is there a reason you are wanting to change clubs?

While I will agree with everyone else that there is no hard rule on when you should/need to replace clubs, there are some indicators that it is time for your club to retire, and you should consider looking into something different:

  • Are you starting to develop any physical pains or discomfort when your playing/practicing that tend to show up or get worse the more you swing the club?
  • Are your clubs starting to show weird deformations on them, such as the steel shaft having a bow in it when you look down the length of the shaft from the grip? Or your graphite shafts showing what appears to be a dark line or hair-line crack down part of the shaft?
  • Do you fee like after you hit the ball well - very well (shots going mostly where you are aiming, no errant miss-hits during your rounds of golf), that good to great swung ball should be flying off the clubs face, but it's barely going any further then your typical, not-good hit goes?

These kind of things do start to occur during your golf-game development, and they do tend to show up more at the point where you are advancing your skill in the game and getting progressively & consistently better and better month-to-month. When you notice these things, then I would say that is typically a point in your golf game where you should start considering a club change or replacement.

  • Pain can develop when you start to understand your swing better and make changes to your swing to get better control, better rhythm, or more power in your swing. But, when you do make these changes, your club that worked well before may not work well for you now and you might be causing yourself discomfort/pain because you are trying to fit your swing to the club, instead of fitting the club to your swing now.
  • Damage to clubs will happen, it's inevitable, especially when your are starting out and trying to get better with constant, consistent practice. Bowed steel shafts will need to be replaced as it'll be hard to make a consistent swing when the club head isn't where it should be in your swing due to the shaft being warped. Graphite shafts with fractures in them really should be replaced as soon as you notice the damage, because if the aren't then there's a good chance shaft will break/snap at some point (probably during impact with the ball when the force of the club is being imparted into the ball) and this could be a potentially dangerous situation where you could get hurt from it. [Side note: I actually witnessed this one time in college; a good buddy of mine on the college's golf team had his graphite shaft (that was unknowingly cracked prior to him swinging it) on one of his clubs snap on impact with the ball, and the club head with the broken shaft bounced off the ground with force shooting back up at him, and the broken end of the shaft ended up stabbing into his forearm.] Not saying this will always happen to a damaged graphite shaft, but it can happen.
  • Eventually, you will get better at the game; and depending on what clubs you started out with, there is a good chance you will begin to out-skill the ability of the clubs at some point, especially if they are a Super Game Improvement styled set of clubs. No matter how well you swing, or how much power you add to your swing, the club will only be able to go so far. If you feel like you have improve significantly in your game, but only seeing diminishing, or no, improvements in your game/shots/distances, then it might be time to step up to a better set that will allow you to see just how much better you truly have become.

I'd recommend, since your are just starting out, to not replace your club(s) just to replace them, but replace them when either : a) your certain that you have gotten better and/or b) that the new club you want to get will help you perform better then the current club you have will. Sometimes, the clubs you start with just isn't a good fit for you and is honestly hurting your ability to play well. Nothing wrong with trying out a buddies club, or doing an afternoon at the adult day-care a.k.a. PGA Super Store or Golf Galaxy to try out some different clubs, to see if they might work better for you then what you current using will.

Welcome to the forum! I wish I had found this community as early in my golfing days as you have! I used a set of hand me down clubs for about a year and the only reason I switched was I wanted a matching set and found a really good deal. I know people that have played the same clubs for 20 plus years and are really good golfers so it’s really up to when you think you’ve either outgrown skill wise your current set or you just want something new.
My advice.. GET FIT! I had no clue how much getting fit helped my golf game until I joined here and saw everyone talking about how important it was.

Welcome to the forum @Hasy404!

The really isn’t a time requirement on replacing clubs, I’m still playing irons from 2011 as they still work well for me and I feel comfortable with them.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.  It is a great group of people here that are more than willing to help!
