Those who are following the VCT year end tournament knew I was away.  I made it to week two of the Stapleford tournament, but was a "did not post" because friends, my wife and I were in Flagstaff and Las Vegas.   The purpose of the trip was to see The Eagles at The Sphere.  After driving through snow on our way from Flagstaff, Arizona to Las Vegas, we were treated to a visual and acoustic experience!

Inside, The Sphere hold 18,600 people.  The one side of The Sphere is able to project moving images with incredible clarity.  Here's a picture from our seats:

Notice how far up the seating goes on the left picture and how life-like the sky and early venues The Eagles played when they started out.

The stage was very simple.  Notice there are no speakers in any of the pictures.  That's because there's 170,000 speakers behind the screen behind the stage with each one pointed toward each seat.  When the band members were talking on stage, it was like they were right next to you.

The acoustics were great.  Unlike other concerts (e.g. we saw Earth, Wind and Fire the next night), you didn't get the pounding base, overly loudspeakers or post-concert ringing in your ears.

Each song had a series of moving graphic images that somehow corresponded to the song.

The Eagles started right on time with Hotel California.  It's hard to believe, but it only got better!  Vince Gill and Deacon Frey split vocals on songs typically sung by Glenn Frey.  Don Henley was great and the band did three of Joe Walsh's hits.   They played for two hours and they did all the classic hits.  I was a little surprised that they didn't sneak one of Don Henley's solo hits.

Overall, I can safely say it was an audio and visual experience.  You knew every song, the acoustics were incredible and the integrated graphics behind the stage made an incredible experience.  I'm not sure I'll ever look at a concert the same way going forward!

Walking back to the hotel, you can get a feeling how big The Sphere really is!  From the hotel, it looks like it's only a few block away when in reality, it's about a mile.

Who knows how long The Eagles will have their residency there.  If you get a chance to see them in the venue, I encourage you to do so.  The only issue we had (other than the $20 beers) was trying to think what other band or artist could fill The Sphere on a regular basis and take full advantage of the acoustics and video capabilities of the venue.  We came to the conclusion:  not too many!
