Rob Person Posted November 3 Posted November 3 (edited) Just a random question that popped into my head while driving into work. I have three different ones, and sometimes I carry it on my bag, and sometimes I don't. If I am playing the par 3 course. I am definitely carrying it as there is a lot of water. And there's usually not a lot of people out there. I generally only use it to retrieve my ball, or what I believed to be my ball. During a normal round, I don't even put it in the bag. I leave it in the truck. I see people out there constantly wasting time. They are Trying to retrieve every ball they see around a water hole. And this is usually during busy times as well on the course. Purdyd Posted November 3 Posted November 3 (edited) Absolutely carry one. if a ball goes in the edge of water I’m going to look for it. Just as I would look for a ball in heavy grass. if the pace of play permits I’ll walk along the edge of a water hazard and fish out a ball. most of the time giving to my playing partners. My best story is playing a short 3 par in North Vancouver Canada and catching up with two ladies and had a little extra time. I was fishing out golf balls out of the small ponds as we walked along and just throwing them onto the fairway. Behind us was a single junior golfer with his mom walking along. This is a super valid reason! We too have a variety of nope ropes ! @Purdyd i saw you talk about this one the other day too. It's unique! As i stated, I have 3. I have a 10' collapsible one that I got recently that is great for retrieving from the edges of mushy areas and waterway edges. It's also good for our fairway edges that are lined with thorn vines and thick brush. It's not the sturdiest as it's a cheap aluminum one. The other two are 15 and 18 feet long, twist lock style. Very sturdy too. A guy I work with has a basket/clamp style one that is very quick and neat to see work. He just drops it and drags it over the ball and it traps it. He doesn't have to try and line the scoop part up over the ball then rotate it and hope it doesn't fall out. @RyanGi good points! when im working the GC and its a slow day, i now take the 10' one out and find balls in the woodline. I have some permanent scars on my lower legs from trying to get to a ball and snagging a thorny vine across the back of my leg. EasyPutter Posted November 3 Posted November 3 I have had a ball retriever since I started golf as I used to put more balls out of bounds and used it more to fish a ball from under bushes and thickets than out of water. Nowadays it gets used more by playing partners who find water more than me and that might be once a month or so. How it really gets used now is an integral part of my rain gear when walking with the push cart. Here it is extended 6 inches under the flag clubhead cover supporting the rain cover (a nautical raincoat from the sailboat that has a longer tail to keep backside dry when line handling and the sleeves tucked in the cart handle keep it in place without any other attachment). Yes it is invisible the way I like it to be. Spot the ball retriever! Ha ha it's under a different clubhead cover now made you look who says my golf bag is not camouflaged? John Bachman Posted November 4 Posted November 4 There are anywhere from 4-8 players in our group and about half of us use ball retrievers. We are one of, if not the fastest groups at our course so we never hold anyone up. The good balls we keep and the ones that aren’t good enough to put into play we put in the basket of my buddies cart. We have no range at our course, but an out of bounds with a wooded area on a hole not too far from the clubhouse. We’ll use a few of the balls to hit into the woods to warm up with. edkrisiak, cksurfdude, The TXBexar and 3 others 6 Quote

release Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Never owned one and is considering , perhaps one in the future. There is this one golf course which has wild black berry bush on both sides of the fairway instead of water or tall trees. Sometimes the tee shot will land in the fairway but rolled into the thorny bushes. Tough to be able to see the golf but just out of the reach by a golf club...... it is okay if using a soft compression ball but tough to lose a premium golf ball that way. Julius Posted November 4 Posted November 4 (edited) yes, I have one in my bag, a telescopic one that folds in nicely but extends to at least 20 feet. It is useful not just of water, I used it in Florida recently to get a ball out from under some brush that it rolled under, and where I play in Europe it is good for the links courses where there is water. Thankfully I don't have a need to use it every time I play but I do carry it in the bag for the "just in case". Also I usually play in a foursome and at times it is used by one of the others also. We are generally decent players so we are not hunting used golf balls in the water or on the course in general.
