Such a good question.

Starting Golf Forever tomorrow and hoping to lift heavier a couple days a week.  Really need to lose another 30 lbs and work on flexibility.  Also considering Hack Motion.

And only 54 years old I think I’m getting a serious hip issue. It limits everything I do – sleeping, walking, and anything more strenuous than that, including my golf swing. So I need to get that sorted. If that requires surgery, it’s going to seriously screw up my winter plans, but I know it will make things better in the long run.

With all the pop-up golf fitness locations, apps, and workouts, what do you plan on doing this off season to improve your game?

Today I began by getting a baseline swing speed with my driver of 107mph.  I used the PRGR for measurement.  Next, I weighed myself @ 230lbs.  Being 55yo and 6' 1", that weight is too much for me.  Time to make a plan.  For starters, I am changing all my grips to JMX mediums due to discomfort in my hands.  Second, I must...MUST...lose 20 lbs.  That is the weight I am the healthiest and sleep best.  Third, create a fitness plan with ample stretching and include meditation of some sorts.  Fourth, eat better and reduce portion size.  Fifth, go back to swing basics and start all over with slow and deliberate movements to hone the swing to include chips.  Sixth, speed training with my SuperSpeed sticks. Seventh is putt, putt, putt, then putt some more.  I may add to this list but this is my starting point.  Speed training will be weekly with module 1 being 5 weeks @ 3x a week after each body workout.

Why meditiation? Well, I kinda get a bit frustrated at times so it may help curb reactions and get back to good thoughts quicker.  Can reading be a form of meditation?  Any ideas in this realm are welcome.

So what are your plans?

First plan is to finish the Perfect Hands training and review. Once I've completed that I'll go back to workout programs from Darebee.com. They don't have any golf specific programs, but plenty of full body workouts that can translate. I lost 60 lbs during Covid just using their body weight training plans. I've gained some of that weight back that I'd like to get rid of.

I still have some coupons to X-Golf that I can use to play during the winter. I need to practice putting, but I don't have anything to do that at home right now.

Thank you. I will put in the caveats that I had quite a lot to lose (5'11" 240lbs) and it took about 18 months. I could've lost it faster, but I slacked on the diet for the last half.

The diet is the hardest part, way too much good food out there…like lasagna, corn bread, and ice cream for starters

After years of struggling, I've finally gotten back into the gym with some consistency. I'm packing on some muscle, losing fat, and finally showing signs of dropping weight as well (I'm currently 5'11", 231lbs).

I'm hoping to be able to invest in the Stack system soon. I tried SuperSpeed in the past and always hated the length of the training sticks/clubs. I've heard a lot of good things about the Stack program, and I've long been a fan of Sasho MacKenzie's work. Aside from that, I'd like to get some new irons in the bag - like actual new irons, not just new to me. I want to do a fitting and dial in my approach game as that is currently my biggest roadblock to achieving my goals.

I will continue to practice putting like I have the last 3-4 years.  I am also going to re-re- and re-dedicate myself to stretching, regularly, which I have started and stopped many times in the last few years.  And even though I don't have an indoor, practice area, I am going to work on the following.  I am going to hang a blanket in my basement, and just practice chipping CONTACT.  Like putting, I have seen much improvement in make stats, on putts 8' and less.  I figure this has come from repetition of my putting stroke.  I figure at least some of my lack of expected results, when chipping, is coming from inconsistent contact.   So even with no way to judge pace, or power, of my chips.  I am going to do as I do with putting, and that is 3-4 x a week, simply chip balls into a blanket to work on more consistent chipping stroke, and  contact where chipping is concerned.

I will continue a stretching regime to keep my back issues at a minimum.  I will continue to play until probably Jan unless we get some December snow.  Then I will use the pole barn net and mat to keep some sort of swing mechanics until March rolls around.  Putting will continue through the winter on the backyard green when temps are tolerable and in the basement when they aren't.

I like the idea of chipping into a blanket in the basement.  I think I will get one of those catch nets to put in front of the blanket.

I also plan to hit a simulator session or three during the winter months.  I will probably meet up with some friends for a more social event than just a practice event.

So what are your plans?

Having just turned 50 and weighing 255 at only 6' tall, I'm well overweight. So that's going to be a big emphasis for me over the winter. My plan is 60lbs by this time next year, and 30lbs by my 51st birthday (6 months from tomorrow). Part of this is a 12-week TPI program I'm starting to help both with weight training but also the flexibility stuff I absolutely need (thank you sitting profession). I'm also going to be paying a LOT more attention to what I'm eating. Not sure I'll use an app to track at this point, but just being better is my main focus (especially staying away from the cookies/cakes/ice cream).

I'd love to add meditation and some type of yoga to my routine as well. It's just good for the body and mind both on and off the golf course.

I'm not going to focus on any speed training or anything like that, as the TPI program takes that into account with the activities it plans for you at the gym. I am going to focus on my swing and making improvements to my low point and wrists at impact, as the casting/flipping has killed me over the years.

@Medfloat good question. After my back stops hurting and I’m better, I plan on working with my core and strengthening both my core and legs. I am doing it the old fashioned way.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

How did you get into the TPI program?  I watched a YT video from ‘on the road with Iona’ where she had an evaluation from TPI.  Very interesting and involved.  Will you be keeping the community appraised of the process you experience?

Great topic and question!

Some of my winter targets are similar.

I'm 50, 6'1" tall and 210-215lbs. Pre-covid I was around 190lb and training most days - swimming and functional training (rucking and throwing heavy sandbags around for the most part). I was a competitive swimmer and completed some endurance events run by former military special forces guys, but picked up a mystery infection before Covid was meant to have arrived (it was early covid for sure, as neighbors picked it up and brought home from either Hawaii or the flight from the West coast in Dec 2019) and that screwed my lungs. I'm a chronic asthmatic and had just finished 3yrs of chemo in Fall 2019, so my lungs and immune system weren't close to 100% to begin with. So my targets in part address general fitness:

1. I plan on getting back to the pool this winter as well as work on my mobility and functional strength. I'll try either Golf Forever or Fit For Golf, something like that. I followed HWPO Golf (think lightweight version of crossfit aimed at modest garage gyms) when it launched and did that for a few months. I really liked the programming early on, but I've slacked off the fitness training since then. More core stability and increase shoulder, core, back, hip and leg mobility and conditioning. Diet improvements will go hand in hand with training to support exchanging excess lard for muscles. Ha ha.

2. Yoga. Along with the above, I need to improve general mobility. I know some of the above programs will include some mobility, but I think I need to dedicate sessions to this.

3. Golf practice- Sim sessions. I'm a member at a place with three sim bays and an 'indoor range' (hall with 4-5 bays with launch monitors). I'll use FlightScope Skills a lot and also play sim rounds. The sim place also has a good size indoor putting green that is very useful over winter. I plan on signing up for the MGS sim virtual golf league that @GolfSpy_BEN has mentioned. That will force some focus on sim rounds and provided added deterrent to hit the 'mulligan' button. ha ha

4. Lessons. I may get a lesson or two in over winter. But I want to work on fitness and mobility first and see how improving those things affect my swing mechanics. My swing is certainly not as fluid and 'athletic' as it once was, but 20 years of no golf will do that.

4a. My 13yr old son has been showing an interest in golf, so I'm looking for winter golf lessons for kids around me. Hopefully that don't break the bank! I'd love to have him join me for rounds at our 9-hole muni next year. 🙂

5. Fitting. I am planning on getting a fitting for driver and fairway wood shafts ahead of next season starting. I feel I'm close with the current shafts, but there's room for improvement. Particularly fairway woods. Driver and FW were not fitted.

That's more than enough for winter! Ha ha.

Fourth, eat better and reduce portion size.

Just going to focus on this one piece of your plan.

This short story is about what I discovered about diet
(meaning food consumption) quite by accident.  It not only limits intake of food but also reduces what gets stored.  It is my experience offered for information only.

How I discovered it myself
was from experiencing a feeling in my stomach like breakfast just sat like a lump in my mid section into the morning.  To stop the discomfort, I skipped breakfast and continued to drink coffee (about 20 oz) instead.  Coffee helps keep me sharp, clears my throat, and generally settles my stomach.

I had known for years on weekends and summer vacations,
I could get my day started putting off eating until later.  When later became the afternoon and lunch was overdue, I knew it was distraction that kept me from noticing I might be hungry.  I really wasn't hungry but I would eat then because I knew when I hit a sugar low it was never a good thing so eating became a must do.

So, not eating for me was not a big deal,
and then I encountered something new.  My younger brother and I came up with a plan to go down to Augusta to surprise my youngest nephew (who joined the US Army because of his uncle who's writing this a couple years before) who was stationed at Fort Gordon (now Ft Eisenhower) and his wife for their first wedding anniversary.

I arrived at his place in Raleigh from Buffalo before lunchtime preferring to drive overnight as I do, and he was getting ready to eat.  He had made enough for both of us so I ate what he ate.  Steak and broccoli, and they were huge helpings of both.  It was filling and I did not feel hunger the rest of the day or the next morning when we set off for the trip.  We had coffee for the drive and on the way to Fort Bragg (now Ft Liberty) my health conscious brother explained he did not eat breakfast or dinner, just one meal a day at midday.

He said when the body does not take in nutrition for 12 hours, the liver produces ketones to create more glucose for the internal organs and the body using converting stored body fat into glucose.

It meant that by not eating between 8 pm and noon the next day,
as was my practice, my body was producing ketones for 4 hours daily.  I had not been doing it regularly but my waistline was not changing much and when my belt got tight I would just reduce how much I ate by a little bit, like skipping a dessert.  It was something I had been doing since I was 30 as officers buy all their uniform items and I did not want to buy new military uniforms except when a new design became uniform.

18 years ago I redeployed stateside from Iraq and worked long term orders
as an Army Reserve officer spending all except one week each month away from home and lived in my own quarters.  Breakfast was a bowl of cereal, lunch at the Dining Facility was only $4 for all I could eat so I ate my big meal of the day at lunch (as is customary in Germany), and a lighter snack at dinnertime.  Do something 20 times and it becomes a habit.  Do it more than a 1000 times and it is a way of life.

Honestly, since I no longer eat breakfast I don't miss it at all.  Just find a coffee you like ☕

How did you get into the TPI program?  I watched a YT video from ‘on the road with Iona’ where she had an evaluation from TPI.  Very interesting and involved.  Will you be keeping the community appraised of the process you experience?

mytpi.com/expert (or something like that). Find a TPI certified expert close to you or that does Zoom assessments and can get a program created for you.

I hope to start a blog or something for the off season around my weight loss, workouts, and swing work.

I watched that too (Iona's channel is a great watch) and was impressed with the level of detail. It got me thinking about TPI too at some point. I know there's a TPI certified trainer at the sim place I'm a member at, but I've heard it's a little pricey!

Ha ha.

Are there any new breathing exercises to increase lung strength and capacity that may help fully recover from Covid? Having a chance to golf with tour child is awesome!  My daughter did US Kids golf for a while and now wishes she would have played more.

Eating one time a day would be very, VERY hard for me to do.  There are times I will skip breakfast and eat later as long as I am occupied with a manual task. Guess that would be similar to the intermittent fasting.  Other times I just want to eat a full plate of crispy bacon and eggs with toast cuz ya gotta make a sandwich out of everything when one was in the service.  And skip dessert?  Are you outta your mind!?!  That’s the best part of the meal…skip dessert, pffft😂🍨🍩🍰

The TPI system seems good because it is set up to conform to the individual, not a blanket plan.  When Iona was screened, questions about her injuries, specifically her right wrist kept presenting themself throughout the screening.  That showed me the evaluator was paying attention.  Did you notice he did not believe the diagnosis she said she was given?

I do breathing exercises (box breathing, for example) and have followed exercises from the book 'Breath' by James Nestor (which is a fantastic book). They do help a little and I should do them more. Chemo screwed my lungs a bit- fluid on the lungs, two bouts of viral pneumonia from common colds and so on. I used to have a breath trainer device and have been considering getting a more modern version to try out.

My off-season strategy isn't one I recommend, but it's a necessary one.  I have shoulder surgery scheduled for late next week.  Torn labrum and a torn bicep tendon.  I'll be back putting and chipping on sunny days soon, and ready to play again in spring of '25.

1. Get in better shape (which for me means 3x weekly high intensity interval training)

2. 30 balls slow speed full swing drill in the garage 2x weekly

3. Indoor chipping practice (TBD, tips welcome!!) 2x weekly

4. Putting practice 2x weekly

I am going to do as I do with putting, and that is 3-4 x a week, simply chip balls into a blanket to work on more consistent chipping stroke, and  contact where chipping is concerned.

I posted this right before you.  First I figure it can't hurt.  Even though I won't be able to see if I am carrying the chip as far as I desire (distance control) in my basement, I figure the repetition of my chipping motion, like my putting practice, will ensure better contact, and a more consistent stroke overall.  My intention is to locate some varying carpet remnants, to simulate varying lies(hopefully 4-5), and to chip 6-8 balls off of each one, 3-4 times a week.
