My fellow shot trackers (watches, app, etc.) what did you learn about your game this year?

With winter on its way and the first snow on the ground here in Denver it’s time for me to reflect on the last season and work on my swing for the next.

For those of us stats nerds that track out shots with Shot Scope, Arccos, etc. What trends did you see and what will you be working on this offseason?

I’ll get it started. I use the Shot Scope V3. Right away it’s very clear my current hybrid is being replaced, something I’ve know for a bit already. Can’t hit it well to save my life. I also have some strange gapping around my 6 iron and sand wedge playing a little shorter than I’d like, something to look into.

Interesting topic - it's something I look at/review after every round: how the numbers look compared to 2024 and previous years. While slightly off topic, I wish SS had a place for notes with Club Data. For instance my drives are off about 15 yds recently  - but that's because of lessons with my driver (lessons are a whole different topic). But more on topic:

Major improvement: Fairway shots - my relatively new Qi10 Max 3 & 5 wood delivered on their hype.

Major disappointment: Driver (as stated above) and short game 100 yds in game. Note on latter - this use to be the best part of my game. I've got to figure out what's going on.

End result is that over the past 3 months, I've increased my handicap by 3 strokes - not in a good way.

I look at performance data periodically throughout the year and more often after some kind of change. For example, I put a new driver in play early this year and was happy with my initial performance. But as the season wore on, my distance started waning, as verified by Shot Scope data. But my solution, swinging faster, only exasperated the situation by hosing my overall distance (more duck-hooks OB) and further reduced my performance average. Since I knew for a certainty that the problem wasn't me (🙄), I embarked on finding a new driver that better fit my needs. The result, at least so far, has been a complete recovery of my driving stats; which, BTW, I know is more coincidence/luck than skill as I still didn't get fit. My score, or better put my reduction of penalty shots off the tee, told me that things have improved. But Shot Scope data provides me with hard numbers to gauge what's happening after my first 4 rounds, +25 yards overall, +23 yards PA. I believe that Shot Scope is a very valuable tool!

I utilize Shotscope for learning a lot about my game. I also have used Arccos but hated the subscription model.

To me the data is great for expectation management as well as finding weak points and what to focus on in practice. It’s why it has guided me to a swing overhaul and putting improvements which I am excited to then see where I am at throughout the season. It also showed my speed has gone down by looking at club distances and why I am happy to be on the stack testing now. It’s also great to see my progress season over season.

From what I see in this image, you're actually gaining 3 strokes on a 15 handicap overall and 4 strokes gained off the tee.

Your approach and short game are negative, so you're giving up 3 strokes to a 15 handicap in those 2 areas. That's what I'd be focusing on in your scenario.

@tony@CIC I created a specific driver in "my bag" in SS for such transitions during driver lessons in the past - once it settled into a stable pattern it comes "out of the bag" in SS and the non lesson version same driver goes back in 🙂

I found that my approach game has improved. This was mainly down to the fact that the stats were saying I regularly can up short so adjusted my yardages to suit distance to back of the green rather than centre

It's been a year of quite a few changes for me, almost all driven by shot data from Arccos/Clippd.

The biggest changes I have made were retiring my 4-iron and 5-iron in favor of 7W and 9W and it has led to a LOT more greens hit from distance. I also switched to the DF3 with TPT putter as my SGP from 10-15ft was way below that of the rest of my putting.

I have found Arccos combined with Clippd to be REALLY powerful. The Arccos "what to work on" is pretty useless, but it is helpful to see the in depth round details and also how individual clubs are performing.

I've gone from 16.4 down to 13.1 this year, including breaking 80 for a second time. I would say where it has helped most is in where to focus my game, and it resulted in deciding to get coaching to work on my Approach play, which is where I was leaking the most shots. I'm hopeful that getting to single digits next year us possible. I've had a few breakthrough rounds, but feel like I'm at a plateau currently as my new swing changes settle in. Fingers crossed I can break through soon.

Currently my sand game is the biggest source of leakage on the card, so I'm getting a bunker intensive this week (also good prep for Pebble in 3 weeks).

Used to shot track but (a) was spending way too much time after every round making sure every shot and every putt started and ended in the proper locations; then (b) was not finding .. for me .. a lot of extra utility from that data...

I know what areas of my recent games have cost me the most strokes - so that is where the next practice sessions get extra time.

Overall for this season I ended with a lot of positives; otoh I definitively know my persistently weakest area has been approaches from 100-150.

Based on the data from last year, I knew that I needed to work on my short game a lot this year, which I have done a much better job of spending time working on the clubs I'm least comfortable with during my practice times. That means I'm spending close to half of my range time with my wedges. As a result, this year, I'm seeing a +1.97 strokes gained from my short game. Where I'm seeing the biggest problem is the -1.63 for approaches. Oddly enough, I seem to have the most trouble in the 100-150 yard range from the fairway. Almost like I'm too surprised to actually be in the fairway that I forget to actually concentrate on the shot at hand. I think the biggest thing for me to really work on next year is spending more time on the course instead of the range. Just getting the reps in for executing the shots when it matters.

I could dive deeper into my numbers, but I'm honestly the type to paralyze myself by being overly analytical/critical if I give myself that opportunity. I'm better off just using the tools to give me a better sense of what my misses tend to be, and using that information to develop a plan for what I'm going to work on. For that same reason, I don't get overly technical with my swing. I just lose all sense of feel and balance when I get to worrying about the swing from an analytical viewpoint.

My handicap dropped from a 15 to a 9 this year, and from the data I see that is mostly because my driver is finding the fairway more, and my wedge game within 120 has greatly improved. Additionally, putting a 5/7w in the bag improved my par 5 scoring. Now, I need to get the putter and approach shots +150 in order.
