I’m currently a 12 handicap and have had game improvement irons for the last 11 years. (Ping g20). I’ve hit a couple blades randomly and had mixed results.  When is the right time you should switch to blades?  How long will it take to get adjusted? Thanks in advance!

There is no “right” time.  There are scratch golfers that play GI irons.   It comes down to how well you hit the specific category of clubs.

Prior to moving to muscle back blades I was using a set of Titleist AP3 Player Distance irons.

What prompted me to make the change was as my technique improved I found that the Players Distance irons didn’t meet my needs anymore.

My main issue was the AP3 irons were just going too far for me.  I would also get a flyer about 1 out of 8 shots that would go even 10-15 yards further than expected.

The trajectory and spin were not where I needed it to be to hold greens.

Switching to the Muscle back blades gave me added height, a better descent angle, more spin and more consistent carry distances.

The turf interaction of the narrower sole is also better for the way I deliver the club to the ball and the course conditions where I live.

The blades don’t go as far, so I needed to adjust my yardages by taking one more club compared to the previous set.

Because of the loft difference I was able to take a wedge out of the bag.

The solid one piece forged construction of the blades also feels and sounds better to me than the hollow bodied AP3 irons.

When I switched iron sets I also changed shafts to a heavier and stiffer version which helped me in other ways.

Most important in choosing any equipment is does it meet your needs and your preferences.

Thankfully there are lots of good choices to fit a wide variety of players these days.

Play the irons that enable you to enjoy the game the most. Whether that is hybrid irons, blades or whatever else!
