PrayingForPar Posted November 18 Posted November 18 This is a multi faceted question, and if it has been answered elsewhere please let me know... My swing speed has drastically changed this last year, and I am now playing Extra stiff in my woods and driver, but still have regular flex shafts in my Sub70 699 pro irons. Here is the question: Is it worth swapping out, or should I just sell these and buy new irons? or, Does iron flex not make that big of a difference? Notes: I would do the re-shafting myself, confident I have all of the tools and skill. I am missing left with regular flex Current shafts are the stock True Temper Elevate 95 MPH Steel. 7 iron swing speed is around 90 mph Budget is limited jbern, The TXBexar and Josh Parker 2 1 Quote Cobra Aerojet MAX 9* Cobra Air X 3 Wood Cobra BioCell 7 Wood Sub 70 699 Pro 4-AW Sub 70 JB Full Groove 54* & 58* Odyssey White Hot Rossie Ball: Maxfli Tour X
golfinnut Posted November 18 Posted November 18 Yes you should replace them. Especially if you're swinging extra stiff down to a regular? I would surmise that you're missing left because the tip is too soft, without seeing your swing. Plus extra stiff are probably 120g & the iron shafts are 90g? That's a considerable difference, especially if you're putting the same swing on them. Just my .02 The TXBexar and jbern 2 Quote WITB: Do I like Titleist or what? Hosel_Rockets Posted November 18 Posted November 18 You could probably find a set of shafts that someone took out of their irons, lightly used, for pretty cheap. I'm part of some Golf Club Trader groups on Facebook and regularly see shafts for sale there for a great deal. Here is a great example, I believe this is on Marketplace as well, so he likely ships anywhere in the US. The one thing to keep in mind with used shafts is length. Irons have different hosel depths so you could possible end up with shafts that are too short. rkj427, Josh Parker, PrayingForPar and 1 other 3 1 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: Paradym AI Smoke Max HL 16.5* w/MCA TENSEI AV Series Blue Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: New candidate has been ordered! I am missing left with regular flex Current shafts are the stock True Temper Elevate 95 MPH Steel. 7 iron swing speed is around 90 mph Budget is limited I'm struggling with something similar, but for different reasons. I would just like to try graphite iron shafts. I do not think selling your 699 pro irons and buying brand new irons is the way to go. I would wait to buy brand new clubs until your swing settles in and you get fit and understand your specifications. Ultimately, I think it would be cheaper for you if you sold your existing clubs and bought a used set with the shafts that you want. Shafts (graphite shafts that I've been looking at) are about $300+ for an iron set and the selling of 699 pro irons and purchasing used 699 pro or 699 pro v2 would likely not be a $300 difference. Steel iron shafts would be less, so if you're going with steel, it might be closer to even financially. My problem is that I don't want to deal with the hassle of buying and selling and graphite shafts in irons are rare. As I'm typing this out, I'm realizing that I'm not helping you much . So to summarize, if you have the skill and don't want to deal with buying and selling used clubs, go for re-shafting yourself. If you are comfortable waiting around and finding the used set with the shafts you want, I think that would be cheaper financially. Good luck and keep us posted! Josh Parker Posted November 19 Posted November 19 Outside of the obvious of get fit, I would look at the lie angle which could cause a pull as well as it being to flexible. Just buying a set of shafts will most likely end up costing you more in the long run. Look at PXG for their fitting specials or any shop that may do them.
