Skin Care...

As I look at my gator-skin hands, I am wondering what people do to take care of your skin before and after rounds.

What type of sunscreen do you use? Bullfrog Sport for me

Do you use anything after to soften and moisturize your hands? Soften calluses?

I have SPF 90+ sunscreen and some hand lotion for when my hands get clammy, usually they are too wet though, not the other way around. I always make sure to use the continuous spray cans of sunscreen so my hands don't get all slick from the sunscreen.

No shame in this, skin care is important.

I use some spray-on Banana Boat on any exposed areas before I go out for a round. If I notice that my skin is getting dry, I'll use some basic Vaseline moisturizer.

I won't flame you. I have over 100 stitches, most on my face, from basal cell skin cancer surgeries. I didn't worry about such things in my youth and I'm paying for it now.

You want the best? My Dermatologist recommends Neutrogena Ultimate Sport sunblock lotion for men SPF55 with helioplex. One 4 oz tube lasted me several months and I'm outdoors in the Carolina sun every day of the year.

Don't waste your money on the crap you buy at CVS or Walmart; order Neutrogena online at Amazon.com or a similar site. This is great stuff, oil and PABA free, and it won't clog pores or cause you to break out.

It's the #1 suncare product recommended by dermatologists.

Thanks Bob. My buddy, at 40, has had a couple of growths removed and it was all it took for me to be a sunscreen user.

I will definitely get the Neutrogena

The Neutrogena Ultimate Sport is what I use also, but I think I've gotten it at Walgreens. Goes on very non-greasy. You hardly know you're wearing it. Good stuff.

I also don't skimp on toiletries. I shave with a razor and a brush. I use C.O. Bigelow Premium Shaving Cream and an after shave balm from the same company. Then I use facial moisturizer on the rest of my face every morning whether I shave or not.

It's a bit metrosexual but I adopted this routine when I lived in Phoenix after noticing the leathery skin of all the guys who spent a lot of time outdoors. Not going out that way - no sir.

I picked up the habit of moisturizing after shaving in college. A definite must in the winter in Chicago, way too dry otherwise.

I'm sorry to here that. I've had about 5 or so different moles removed myself, and I see a dermatologist every 6 months. Skin cancer is preventable, so I want to do everything I can do to prevent it.

I started a similar routine, but after watching Patrick Bateman in American Psycho B)

What besides vasaline lotion do you guys use for hands? Do you care about the calluses? I sort of feel like I have earned them...

Calluses are good until they get too thick, then I cut them off with fingernail clippers, it's all dead skin anyway. But you have to make sure you don't cut off too much or it gets to close to the dermal layer of skin, live skin. For my hands I use regular hand lotion, especially in the winter because it is so dry.

Just the basic lotion with aloe. I don't care about getting rid of calluses, I figure my hands have developed them because they need them.

You can buy motor oil in the "drugstores" around here but i've never found Neutrogena. Thanks for the info though.

BullFrog spray-on (pump) Quick gel ----- the absolute best. Easy to get on....fast to dry...and you don't have to get any on your hands.

That is my bullfrog of choice, but I am going to check the Neutrogena out when mine is empty. too expensive not to use it up first...

I also learned the hard way. I had never in my life used sunscreen. I've got some Indian/Native American blood in me from way back, and I've never really burned that badly. A couple years ago though, I had a spot/mole on my ear that I thought might have been getting bigger. Went to the derm specialist, and while it was non-cancerous, they took it out because they "didn't like the way it looked". Ever since then, I make sure to use sunscreen. Live and learn.

Glad to hear that this wasn't serious. This thread should act as a serious "scared straight" wake up for anyone who isn't protecting their skin, I know I am going to be much more religious about having a full can of sunscreen in my bag.

Don't forget it too when you are just going to the range. In the afternoon, we fire right into the sun and I got a good burn there last summer when I wasn't thinking about it.. :)

Even in the winter. It doesn't have to be hot to get sunburn. Also, skiing, you should use sunscreen if you are skiing when it is sunny.

Good point. It's easy to think, "Oh, I won't be out there that long." Two hours later I'm still chipping and not burned.

I'm not sure how much sun protection the bucket hat gives, but it's always a fashion statement. I'm a baseball cap or visor guy, but I have taken to popping my collar on the course. I know, I know, I hate people who walk around like this too, but it's completely functional and I hate having a burnt neck. The second I walk off 18 green, it's back to the correct position.
