Premier Licensing's Premier League Golf Accessories-REVIEW

Check the end of the review for the contest!

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Right now is definitely my favorite time of year for sports. The FedEx Cup race is wrapping up, both college and NFL football are starting, and baseball games are finally starting to truly mean something. While I will spend hours watching all of these sports over the coming months, there is another season getting underway that also gets a great deal of my passion, Premier League Football. Yes my USA brethren, I am talking about soccer. Somewhere along the way, I became a supporter of the Manchester United Football Club. I have never been to Manchester, England. I estimate it is about 5100 miles from my front door to Old Trafford. Regardless, I love the Red Devils. Of all of the professional teams out there, Manchester United is the one team where I know all of the players, understand the rivalries, and make the effort to see every minute of every game.

With this in mind, one afternoon I went out into the wilds of the Internet seeking a new driver cover to show my support of my team. Golfers in Europe and Asia will sometimes bemoan the cost of picking up golf gear that we in the USA can buy just about everywhere. After finding out that a Fred the Red mascot headcover did, in fact, exist, I was quite bummed to find out that if I wanted one, I was going to have to buy it from the UK. Not even the commercial powerhouses of eBay and Amazon had one available. AmazonUK and eBayUK did though. As you would expect, shipping made the headcover more expensive than any other headcover that I could pick up at the local pro shop. I guess that I wouldn't have minded paying the premium price, if I knew that the quality of the headcover would be top notch. I kept looking at the listings, almost buying the cover, and then stopping at the last second. I just didn't know what I would be getting.

Thankfully, a few months of this type of indecision came to an end when I was able to make contact with Premier Licensing, the company who makes the Premier League licensed golf accessories. Not only had they heard of MyGolfSpy before, but they had also read our reviews, and they jumped at the chance to have their golf line undergo review scrutiny. Within a few days I had a box of Premier League goods to test, the results of which I bring you today.

What's In The Box?

group.jpg

I love getting packages in the mail, with this one being especially exciting. Here is what was inside:

    • Man City mascot cover
    • Man Utd mascot cover
    • Man Utd aqua lock towel
    • Tottenham Ball Marker
    • Chelsea Duo + Ball marker
    • Celtic Scorecard Holder
    • Liverpool Gruve Brush
    • Arsenal Casino Ball Marker
    • Celtic Poker Chip Ball Marker
    • Newcastle Executive Driver Cover

For sake of scope, and acknowledging that for some silly reason some people like teams other than ManU, I had them send me the different products with the various team logos. For the sake of simplicity, I'll discuss the different accessories sub-grouped by type.

Ball Markers

markers2.jpg

markers back.jpg

This was actually a fairly wide category of items. Some were classic, like the plastic Celtic Poker Chip and the Tottenham two-sided “hat-clip” type of markers. Others were a bit more interesting. The Arsenal marker is in the style of a poker chip, but made of metal and a little heftier. The Chelsea marker is about the same size, but it also has a smaller detachable marker. I thought that this was a great playability feature. You can use the whole, larger marker when it will not be in the line of sight for your partners, and then use the smaller insert when more discretion is necessary. Nice.

I also really was surprised by the Liverpool Gruve Brush. It has a nice little enameled ball marker that attaches to a small brush. The brush fits unobtrusively in the pocket, and does a pretty good job of cleaning out the grooves. The dirt also did not seem to really stick to the brush, so my expected pocket full of grass and dirt never happened.

Aqua Lock Caddy Towel

towel 2.jpg

towel 3.jpg

OK, so the towel has the Man UTD logo and says Manchester United along the hem. Obviously this is the best golf towel ever made. End of review. Well, maybe I should be a bit more objective. The Aqua Lock reminds me quite a bit of the excellent Club Glove towel that Matt reviewed previously (HERE). Before the best towel ever arrived, I was actually using the Club Glove towel as well. After a couple of rounds, I definitely prefer the Aqua Lock and would confidently take the Aqua Lock towel out on the course, even if it said Chelsea. OK that may be crazy talk. This towel is a bit thicker than the Club Glove and has a great capacity for water. I always soak half of the towel for cleaning and such, and this towel stayed damp for quite a while. It is a great golf towel! I know that some of you just go to Walmart and buy a bath towel and that's great for you. I like a stylin' towel. FWIW, Ian Poulter also likes a stylin' towel and has been seen sporting the Arsenal Aqua Lock out on tour. If it's good enough for IJP, it's good enough for you.

Celtic Scorecard Holder

scorebook_comp.jpg

Truth be told, I always keep score on my iPhone. However, this scorecard holder is so nice that I actually considered going back to paper scoring. The leather is supple and the Celtic logo looks great on the cover.

Traditional Headcovers

newcastle.jpg

new close.jpg

Let's start with the more traditional Newcastle Executive Driver Cover. This is a great, simple-in-design driver cover. The Executive Driver Cover looks more like the headcovers that came stock with your driver. Nothing too flashy, which is exactly what some of you are looking for. The quality is again excellent. You can see from the photos that the Newcastle United logo is constructed from numerous stitches. The stitching in the body is also very stable, ensuring that this headcover should last quite a while. I have not had the cover out long enough to know if it is prone to fading as some headcovers are, but I do know that there are some great anti-UV products out there that can prevent the fading should this be a concern. Although I did not have one for testing, you can also support your favorite team with a nice pom pom headcover.

Mascot Headcovers

And so we return to the genesis of this review, Fred the Red. In addition to Fred, I also had Premier Licensing send along Moonchester, the Manchester City mascot. Might as well put the two head to head right off the bat this season. We all know how much battling they will do on the pitch this year. Seemed appropriate to get that going.

mascots.jpg

back pair.jpg

Anyway, I am impressed with both of the headcovers. My main concerns were fit on the driver and quality of construction. For sake of reference, I tested the headcovers with both my Callaway Razr Fit and Tour Edge Exotics XCG drivers. I discovered that they:

  • easily slip on and off
  • stay in place while walking and riding
  • are deep enough to provide protection for the shaft
  • are sufficiently padded to protect the club
  • are light enough not to droop or cause the driver to slip from the bag

lining.jpg

Basically, these headcovers don't do the things that have caused me to stop using other headcovers in the past. More importantly, they look cool in the bag, letting everyone know who you support. Admittedly, the guys that I got paired with last week didn't know anything about the Premier League. Even then though, I did get a “that's a cool little devil” from one of them.

Fred the Red is obviously the superior of the two headcovers, although my ManCity supporting brother seems to be having a hard time grasping this concept.

Final Thoughts on Premier Licensing Premier League Golf Accessories

Like you, I sometimes have a hard time buying products that I don't have much information about. I say with confidence that these are great products. The quality is there to go with the support of your favorite football club. Check out their site and add your team to your golf bag. Sport that Gunnersaurus or Stamford the Lion with pride!

My team is Wolverhampton Wanderers. To be honest, the Wolves stuff doesn´t look very good because of the boring "wolf" badge/logo. If I win I´d like to get the Man United headcover for my dad. He´s 67 but used to play professional football back in the days when they had to have two jobs + their football career. Man Utd has a huge following here in Norway and he´s always been a fan. We´re a bit anglofile.

I love the Man Utd mascot driver headcover too. I´ll have to buy that for him :)

Why only world wide? Disappointing that you don´t offer intergalactic shipping.

A Utd fan Dave? You are dead to me. : p

Chelsea fan here because

A: Zola

B: They brought me over for a trial. Then I blew out both ACL's and was the end of that but still.

That is so cool that you got to try out! Too bad it didn't work out. I bet you could have been traded to a good team eventually. ;)

I'm a lifelong spurs fan (tottenham) to my US mgs brethren; the passionate enemy of arsenal and all round fancy dans of the premier league. We don't win much but neutrals love us due to the high number of goals in our games (sadly at both ends). All prizes gratefully received!

I'd be chuffed with anything Celtic as well; best mates dad was the goalkeeper a long time ago and he's a devout supporter.

I've got a few views on anyone I draw to play in the medal who sport man united head covers!

Mind you my grandad played for Southampton (propping up the premier league) back in the day, nothing in the box from them I suppose?

old bugger was still playing off 6 into his 80's and slaughtering me. Oh and he narrowly missed out on the Berlin Olympics 100m against Jessie Owens....... His commonwealth medal for 4 x 110yds relay sits on my desk (1936 in Australia). His sporting prowess missed a few generations sadly :(

Funny you have the Man. U as one of the football (soccer USA) teams as thats my sons favorite team. I'm personally a Messi fan , but being an Irishman I really like that Celtic scorecard holder and the poker chip is sweet as well. My son would freak if I could get him one of those MAn U covers. I mean this kid eats sleeps drinks football. He has every app to follow all Premier league games , deals and anything else football! thanks for the heads up on this , I'm probably a day late and a dollar short( hopefully my son doesn't already know about these items) but I definitely want one of the Celtic scorecard holder and a Man U cover for my boy along with one of their towels. Single handedly saved Arsenal last year, might do the same with Utd this year.

Equally odd is that Arsenal's defense looks really good at the moment and it's been 7 or 8 odd years since that's been the case. If Giroud ever gets going, could be nice.

Thanks everyone - I'll be posting up some photos and a brief review once I get a hold of this. I'm counting on a little luck from the Celtic four-leaf clover for our Southern hemisphere summer ... which is about to start. That wasn't intended to make anyone jealous, but just a little added bonus ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi all,

Well the luck of the irish was with me and I was fortunate enough to be the winner of the Premier Licensing Major League Football Headcover competition held recently. I have just received the putter headcover in the mail so thought I would flick you through some unveiling pics and my initial thoughts.

I went with the Celtic Football Club for three main reasons:

  1. I have familial links to Scotland
  2. The Celtics have a rich history
  3. I love the four leaf clover …and my wife keeps telling me that green is my colour...

Apologies in advance for the pictures being sideways - no idea why that is (they're not on my computer)...

photo 1.JPG

photo 2.JPG

photo 4.JPG

photo 3.JPG

photo 5.JPG

As you can see, this is one stylin' putter cover! I was totally stoked when I got this bad boy out of its wrapper. I'll put a plug in right now for Premier Licensing - this was clearly shipped promptly and was very well packaged.

THe photos don't do this justice and what i'm blown away by is the detailing on the headcover. I've had a thorough look and not a stitch out of place, the logo embroidery is sharp, and as you can see from the ball marker there is a fair amount of detailing there.

The headcover utilises a magnetic enclosure, with one side doubling to house the ball marker. Be assured, this headcover will NEVER fall off, nor will your ball marker ever fall off - the magnet is SOLID!

As you can probably tell, this is a blade putter cover. I'm currently using a mallet but am scheduled for a putter fitting in a couple of weeks and am fairly certain I'll be going back to a blade of some description so I'll be sure to post up some more pics of the headcover in use soon.

So, lets hear it. Thoughts?
