Component Clubs

Dave

Recommended Posts

Who else has tried Component brand clubs. Not to be confused with clone clubs of course. And what have you though of them.

I've had a few in my bag at various. SMT and Geek drivers, Geek fairways. Purefit irons. I still have the irons actually, just no shafts in them at the moment. Nakashima fairway, still regret selling that too this day.

Great clubs, the custom options are endless. They can price anywhere from cheap as to top of line tour quality equipment depending on what you choose and what you want them built with. But OEM stuff can be like that as well.

I've always wanted to try Wishon or Reid Lockhart wedges but havent got round too it yet.

I have a revolving WITB policy.

Me, Dynacraft Avatar Hybrids, built by Heriko golf. I love them, the options when you build a club. I am interested in their Prophet ICT 2 driver also, very nice price, tons of grip, shaft options, and the flexibilty of the club.

Maybe MGS can run a review of these too when they do the clone stuff. Not that they are the same, just another area that is possibly worthy to add to the list of consumer knowledge and choice.

Heriko Golf's brands are not clones, they develop their own equipment and build them from scratch, nothing is cloned.

Again, not calling them cloned, just not as commonly found as the big names.

I currently have a set of Hireko XK's that made Golf Digests sleeper set of irons. Prior to that a set of Powerbilt TPS 6.0's.

I'm going into my second season with them and with the lie adjustments that I just had made, topic found in DYI, I could not be happier.

Now here's something -

Last year I had a Tour Edge Exotics 5 wood with an Accra shaft - as that goes, you would be hard pressed to find a better head or shaft.

Got rid of it - ya' know what killed it -

Geek DCT with a Mercury Savage shaft !

My $75 Geek destroyed my $250 T/E.

My thought is that you should not look down your nose at any MFG. when it comes to equipment. Advertising budgets very often do not equate to the best equipment for you.

How do you try this stuff our Rob? The only shop in my area that carries these brands is in a warehouse in an industrial zone. not much of a hitting bay there...

Ya' know Sac, thats a damn good question. I guess you would have to say its a leap of faith.

You, me and probably most everyone here pore through every review that we can find about equipment. After that we hit every website around trying to find out if anyone else has hit that we're considering.

Lets put it this way - You have heard about Scratch Wedges. Have you ever seen them at your local store ? Likely not.

Will you open your wallet to buy one ? Most likely because you have read numerous reviews from people who have bought them and reviewed them positivley.

I can cheat on scratch, because my local shop has them.

But now that you put it that way, I bought my first Byron putter based solely on the raves of owners.

$75 gamble on a club is far less than that one was...

Maybe the local carrier has a return policy that allows for some play.

I'll have to check.

If you go with one of the high end component companies and are lucky enough to find a quality club-fitter and club-maker....you can end up with a very good product.

I've got a SMT 455 Deep Bore that I still it occasionally. I've hit some super long drives with that club.

It is such a new market of clubs, that I have a hard time even knowing what that club is.

Google is my friend, but it is nice to have something in the brain to bounce off of.

MGS review article would be sweet.

Until then, word of mouth (driver above noted :) )

I did some research on them recently (was offered a sweet deal on SMT components) and found nothing but positive reviews for SMT, KZG, and other component brands. It is hard to take that leap (even at the lower prices) when there's so much stuff you can try before you buy.

I have a KZG 50* that I found in a thrift shop for a dollar. Amazing feel on that wedge. but it is a wedge, so we are not having a relationship as of yet...

The one thing I do like about SMT and this goes for anyone, you can get the head handpicked for you. The Encore for example is designed to fly low (this is what I wanted for windy conditions) but will give you a big run when it lands. I needed an 11* and got a 10.8*. This is real loft not stamped loft (OEM) where they can be all over the place. One of my other drivers is designed to fly high (humid conditions) with less of a run when it hits the ground (Ping G5). I got the sales person to pull 10 of them and we got my 12*, 1 out of 12 made it!

Everyone should get their club checked out, you might be surprised what you are actually playing.

I didn't know that about SMT, that's a really great bit of customer service. I was aware of the variance in OEM lofts, which is why I try to buy the one that I hit on the range/simulator.

I have heard this about the "hotness" of the face. Find the model you want and hit all of them in the shop, if they will let you. Some are a touch longer than others... or so I have heard

Good point, just like there are tolerances for loft and lie, there are a range of tolerances for COR. You can actually find some on the shelves that are above the COR limit.

Heard nothing but positives for KZG.

As for SMT and Mike Tait -- and no offense meant to him or his friend that's on here (just reporting what I've seen/heard online and some personal experience) -- but Mike can be a bit of a prickly (as in easily irritated and somewhat hard to get along with) personality. Just FYI.

You are correct about KZG and SMT.

One note about KZG (and if I'm wrong, please correct me, but I'm 99% on this): you need to buy their clubs assembled from a clubmaker. With SMT, you can buy the heads and/or shafts separately and build them yourself.
